Vials containing the Janssen Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) vaccine from Johnson & Johnson.

Johnson & Johnson via Reuters

The World Health Organization condemned wealthy nations for stockpiling coronavirus vaccines, treatments and protective equipment.

Criticism from two of WHO’s top epidemiologists came during a Q&A streamed Tuesday on the organization’s social media channels. The WHO has been vocal about global inequalities in Covid vaccination since vaccination began last winter and has increased its calls for a fairer distribution of vaccinations in low-income countries, as several developed nations have already vaccinated much of their populations and recently started giving booster doses.

“This is not only unfair, it is not only immoral, it is prolonging the pandemic,” said Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical director for Covid. “And it leads to people dying.”

Previously, on August 4, the WHO urged wealthy nations to stop distributing Covid boosters for at least two months and urged them to divert their surpluses to poorer countries in hopes of 10% of each country’s population by the end of September vaccinate. The organization has also set a December deadline for vaccinating 40% of the world’s population.

The US, which fully vaccinated 53% of its population, has already given a booster vaccination to more than 1.3 million people. The European Union has fully vaccinated 57% of its population and is giving booster doses in France and the UK, according to the United Nations.

By comparison, Africa has only fully vaccinated 3% of its population against Covid and 26 countries on the continent have distributed less than half of their total vaccines, the WHO said on Thursday.

Given the current vaccination pace, WHO said nearly 80% of African countries will not be able to vaccinate the 10% of their populations most susceptible to severe Covid symptoms by the end of the month.

In the United States, where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than 62% of the population received at least one Covid vaccine dose, Pfizer booster distribution could begin as early as September 20. The White House says President Joe Biden has donated more than 110 million vaccines to nearly 100 developing countries of the 500 million doses he pledged in June.

But WHO said the industrialized world had not supplied enough vaccines, treatments and protective equipment to completely suppress the virus.

“The rhetoric is fine, it’s about sharing, it’s about fairness,” said Dr. Mike Ryan, WHO Director of Emergency Health Programs. “But in reality these products are available, are being hoarded in countries and not shared.”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson walks outside Downing Street in London, UK on August 18, 2021.

Hannah McKay | Reuters

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will announce plans to raise taxes on Tuesday to fund health care and welfare reforms in the country.

By raising the social security rate (an income tax) by an estimated 1.25%, Johnson’s administration aims to address crises in welfare funding and National Health Service waiting lists, the latter of which is rising amid escalating pressures on health services around the world The Covid-19 pandemic has shot up.

The increased rate could reportedly net more than £ 10 billion ($ 13.8 billion) a year.

Johnson will announce the changes in a statement to the House of Commons on Tuesday. The prime minister’s spokesman confirmed to Sky News Tuesday morning that cabinet ministers had approved the plans.

Under UK National Insurance, workers and employers pay a levy that finances certain welfare programs such as state pensions, statutory sick pay and maternity allowance. People over the statutory retirement age do not pay the fee, which effectively lowers their tax burden.

For workers earning between £ 797 and £ 4,189 per month, Social Security payments are 12% of their earnings. Additional income over £ 4,189 per month will be taxed at 2%. These payments are made in addition to income tax.

Meanwhile, UK newspaper The Sun reported Tuesday that cabinet sources said “the most profitable” participants in the stock market would also be subject to new tax increases, which the BBC said would come in the form of higher taxes on shareholder dividends.

England’s NHS will receive a £ 5.4 billion cash injection over the next six months to bolster its response to the Covid-19 crisis, the government said on Monday. Of this funding, £ 1 billion will be used to help reduce the treatment backlog left by the pandemic.

In August, an analysis conducted by the Nuffield Trust found that nearly 1.2 million people in England had to wait more than six months to access key NHS services such as cardiology and brain surgery.

Social reforms

It is expected that the funds generated by the higher social security rate will also be used for the overhaul of social welfare in England.

Sky News reported that the reforms will include a cap on the cost of care over a lifetime, capping the amount at £ 86,000, although that may not include the price of nursing home accommodation.

Currently, people in England have to pay for their own care if they have savings and assets over £ 23,350, which means that social care is rarely funded by the state. According to Sky, that threshold is expected to rise to around £ 100,000 as part of the reforms.

A restructuring of the country’s social welfare system has long been expected, with people often being forced to sell their homes to cover care costs.

In his first speech as Prime Minister in 2019, Johnson said his administration would “resolve the welfare crisis once and for all” and vow to “give every elderly person the dignity and security they deserve”.

Setback

However, the prime minister’s plans have been criticized by some lawmakers from his own Conservative party, many claiming they would break promises the party made prior to the election to form a majority government.

Ahead of the country’s last general election in 2019, Johnson promised on the Conservative manifesto not to raise income tax, sales tax or social security.

House of Commons Chairman Jacob Rees-Mogg wrote in his column for the Sunday Express over the weekend that Johnson’s tax turnaround could cost Conservative votes. Following the famous quote from former US President George HW Bush: “Read my lips: no new taxes,” Rees-Mogg argued that “voters remembered these words after President Bush forgot them”.

Economy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng, Trade Secretary Liz Truss and Justice Secretary Robert Buckland are also said to be concerned about the plans, as are many conservative lawmakers who are not members of Johnson’s cabinet, the Guardian reported.

China, the world’s largest emitter of CO2, is committed to climate change and has set ambitious goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. So far, however, there have been few details on how to get there.

Like many other large countries, China missed a July 30th deadline to submit new climate pledges to the United Nations.

That could change at this year’s COP26, the 26th UN climate conference of the contracting parties, said Gavin Thompson, vice chairman of Wood Mackenzie Asia Pacific.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has reportedly received a personal invitation to COP26 but has not confirmed his attendance.

In a September 2 blog post, Thompson outlined five things to expect from China at the upcoming summit in Glasgow, Scotland.

Provide a roadmap

The official submission of China’s national climate targets before COP26, which begins on October 31, is a “critical step” that Beijing now seems ready.

“We should expect much more of how this is accomplished, with key objectives for all Chinese provinces and economic sectors,” Thompson wrote.

To meet his 2060 net zero carbon target, Wood Mackenzie expects China to need an almost “complete transformation of the way energy is generated and delivered,” he added.

Demand flexibility

Despite pressure from the international community, China has insisted on and will continue to pursue its own net-zero course, Thompson said.

Coal-fired power plants in China are unlikely to be banned until 2025, he predicted. The country’s five-year plan continues to provide support for high-carbon coal.

“The dual goals of energy security and economic growth will fuel China’s pursuit of flexibility in achieving the goals,” he said.

Still, China has invested in renewable and clean energy to meet its goal of carbon dioxide emissions peaking by 2030.

Reject CO2 border tax

Countries with more pressure

China has long believed that the responsibility for reducing global emissions rests with developed countries, Thompson said.

“You broke it, you are fixing it,” he wrote of Beijing’s stance, adding that their position was “not without justification.”

Blaming richer nations also has potential economic benefits for China, as it dominates the supply and processing of most of the raw materials for clean technologies.

“By putting pressure on developed countries to address climate change more urgently, both domestically and through increased financial support for poorer countries, Beijing is capitalizing on much of the economic benefits that are likely to flow back to China,” the WoodMac said. Note.

Position yourself as a leader

Beijing was trying to present itself as a world leader on climate change in 2020 when the Trump administration left that position blank, Thompson wrote. Under the former President Donald Trump, the United States withdrew from the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

But with the Biden government taking a “radically different approach,” China must now work harder to become a real leader.

“This should encourage bolder policies around carbon and technology, as without them China’s reputation and global standing could be undermined by US ambitions,” he wrote.

The US and China held talks on climate change last week, but tensions between the two sides came to the fore when Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said climate protection cooperation could not be separated from the broader relationship, Reuters reported.

US Climate Ambassador John Kerry responded by telling Chinese leaders that climate change is more important than politics.

WASHINGTON – A month ago Atifullah Ahmadzai boarded a flight from Connecticut to Kabul to detain his wife and five young children.

The purpose of this trip was nearly a decade in preparation when Ahmadzai, a former U.S. military interpreter, carried the last documents his family needed to issue a coveted special immigrant visa.

While in Kabul, Ahmadzai planned to say goodbye to friends and family members before taking his wife and children to America, where he had spent the past two years preparing for their new life.

Ten days after his plans, after the rest of Afghanistan fell while the US military withdrew, the Taliban occupied the presidential palace in Kabul.

The rapid collapse of the Afghan government forced Ahmadzai and thousands of others to flood the gates of Hamid Karzai International Airport, where Western troops were conducting evacuation flights from the country.

The story of Ahmadzai and his family is a symbol of the despair and fear of thousands of Afghans when the US and coalition troops withdrew the last of their troops from Afghanistan after almost 20 years of occupation.

In the 17 days leading up to August 31, the United States and coalition partners have flown more than 116,000 people from Afghanistan in cargo planes. The Pentagon said it used more than 5,000 U.S. soldiers and 200 aircraft on the colossal evacuation mission.

Meanwhile, governments around the world opened their borders to vulnerable Afghan nationals arriving on evacuation flights.

“I didn’t expect everything to change immediately,” Ahmadzai told CNBC.

“The Taliban set up a checkpoint 250 meters from my house where they questioned you about your job,” he said, adding that he was too afraid to divulge his previous role in the Afghan military.

Taliban troops guard the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, September 2, 2021.

Stringer | Reuters

At one checkpoint, Ahmadzai said his cell phone had been searched by Taliban insurgents looking for anything to confirm his ties to the previous government or the United States.

“They also knocked on people’s doors and asked about their jobs,” he said. “The houses of those who worked for the government or the US military were marked during the day and at night the Taliban came back to these houses to kill.” Fear of targeted killings by the Taliban made many Afghans want to leave the country.

A collective call on Facebook

Desperate for a way out, Ahmadzai sent a text message to a US Army officer for whom he had translated during the longest American war.

“He addresses me as his brother,” said officer Mike Kuszpa, now a Connecticut teacher, when asked about Ahmadzai’s first message.

“He wrote to me saying, ‘Brother, my family and I are out here and the Taliban are looking for interpreters. Who knows what’s going to happen, they could kill me and my family,'” Kuszpa told CNBC.

A 2004 photo of Antifullah Ahmadzai (left) and Mike Kuszpa (right) in Afghanistan.

Courtesy Mike Kuszpa

“I grabbed straws. I didn’t know anyone, so I posted on Facebook on a message board in the neighborhood and asked if anyone had connections with the State Department who could help my interpreter and his family take an evacuation flight, ”he said.

The post to the 109-strong Facebook group “Westville Dads” triggered a deluge of phone calls, Facebook messages, encrypted text messages and e-mails to a network that ranged from academia and intelligence analysts to lawmakers and diplomats.

“I got in touch with a former student of mine who is a foreign service to get his documents into the system so he wouldn’t be turned away at the airport,” said Matt Schmidt, professor of national security and political science at the University of New Haven, which reached out to at least 16 people to help Ahmadzai.

“I advised Atif to wait for a call from the state to go to the airport,” said Schmidt using a shortened version of Ahmadzai’s first name, Atifullah. “Mike was restless while waiting and told Atif to go to the airport.

A fight to escape

Around the world, Western forces stepped up emergency humanitarian evacuations amid security threats and the Biden government’s self-imposed withdrawal period on August 31.

“At some point I got news of gunfire at the airport while I was on the phone with Atif. It was surreal,” said Schmidt, who was breathlessly waiting for updates from Ahmadzai.

In Kabul, Ahmadzai and his family fought to escape.

“It was difficult to get to the airport. I tried three days in a row, but I couldn’t get to the gates, ”Ahmadzai told CNBC, explaining that every time he and his family returned home after a full day, he bypassed the Taliban checkpoints had to wait at the airport.

“On the fourth day I received a text message advising me to go through another gate. By the time I got there, there were already more than 1,000 people gathered,” said Ahmadzai. He said there were occasional shots in the crowd.

“My family was very scared and shocked,” said Ahmadzai. “My wife asked me if we could go back because she was afraid for our children, but I told her we had to try to go because it was better than dying at the hands of the Taliban.”

After waiting more than three hours at the gate, Ahmadzai was able to get close enough to the US marines guarding the entry point to show them his green card and visa.

“I then showed them the papers for my children and my wife,” he said. The Marines were able to verify his information, he said, because it was entered into the State Department’s system two days earlier thanks to the network of mobilized fathers on Facebook.

Ahmadzai’s next message to his friends who were coordinating his evacuation came from inside the airport.

Antifullah Ahmadzai, a former Afghan interpreter for the US military, stands with his children and US Marines at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan.

“When he sent the photo of him and his children safely at the airport with the soldiers at his side, I burst into tears,” said Schmidt.

“As a dad, I couldn’t imagine what fate awaited them if they didn’t get out,” Schmidt continued. “We were just fathers who went all over the world to help another father. We were all connected more than culture or religion. We knew what it means to have to protect your family. “

A fateful departure

Ahmadzai, his wife and their children, ages 2 to 12, boarded a C-17 military aircraft and flew to Qatar, which is about 1,200 miles from Kabul. They spent two nights and three days in the country of the Persian Gulf.

“The camp in Qatar was good, but when we got there my second son felt very sick and vomited more than 15 times because he was not familiar with this situation. A paramedic came and quickly gave him an IV and after that he could eat and drink again, “said Ahmadzai.

Antifullah Ahmadzai, an Afghan national, takes a selfie in a waiting bay at an unspecified location in Qatar.

Courtesy: Antifullah Ahmadzai

After Qatar, the family was flown to the Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, where they spent the night. The next day they boarded a flight to the United States and arrived at Dulles International Airport in Virginia.

Ahmadzai said he and his family had been tested for Covid-19 and had biometric health screenings before leaving the Dulles airport. At the beginning of the year he was vaccinated against Covid. The Pentagon previously said that any Afghan nationals moving to the United States who want the coronavirus vaccine can get one.

“I never expected to get back to the States alive,” said Ahmadzai, who spoke for a week with CNBC from Qatar, Germany and the United States. He was “grateful that the USA helped us in a very critical situation”.

“There was no option, no flights and no way for me and my family to escape the Taliban,” he said.

When asked about his children, Ahmadzai said they were “doing great and happy”.

“The children are very different now. They think they are in another world and are trying to learn a new language and way of life.”

Ahmadzai and his family recently left a US military facility in Virginia where they were finalizing their special immigrant visa papers. He returns to Connecticut with his family.

Army officer Kuszpa said there were plans for an outdoor barbecue to welcome Ahmadzai’s family to the community.

“Now he’s here and part of our family,” said Schmidt, the professor. “His children will play with ours.”

George Town, Grand Cayman

Noel Hendrickson

Europe’s largest banks book an average of € 20 billion ($ 23.7 billion) in tax havens every year, according to a new report.

That accounts for 14% of their total profit, the analysis showed.

The EU Tax Observatory’s report, released on Monday, examined the activities of 36 systemically important European banks headquartered in 11 countries across Europe that have been subject to mandatory country-by-country reporting of their actions since 2015.

17 countries are included in the report’s list of tax havens: Bahamas, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Macau, Malta, Mauritius, Panama and Qatar.

The report found that between 2014 and 2020, around 65% of banks’ profits abroad were generated through affiliates. Earnings per employee were also far higher in tax havens than in other countries, according to the report, with subsidiaries in tax havens showing high profitability and profit margins.

The researchers also indicated that 25% of banks’ profits were booked in countries where the effective tax rate was below 15%.

“Taken together, this evidence points to a significant presence and stable use of tax havens by European banks over the years,” the report said.

“The profitability of banks in tax havens is unusually high: 238,000 euros per employee compared to around 65,000 euros in non-port countries,” added the authors. “This suggests that the profits posted in tax havens are mainly being shifted from other countries where services are provided.”

Variation between banks

The analysis showed that the use of tax havens varied considerably between banks. The average percentage of profits booked in tax havens between 2014 and 2020 was around 20%, according to the data, but between 0% and 58%.

Several banks have identified a “relatively high presence in tax havens” by the researchers.

“We observe a large number of situations: For HSBC, the majority of the port profits come from just one port [Hong Kong]while in other cases multiple tax havens are involved, “the report said.

According to the study, HSBC posted an average of 58% of its pre-tax profit in tax havens between 2014 and 2020.

“HSBC is the largest bank in Hong Kong with approximately 30,000 employees, and because of our tradition, size and strategy, a significant portion of the group’s profits continue to be generated there,” a HSBC spokesman told CNBC via email. “HSBC does not use tax avoidance strategies to artificially divert profits into low-tax countries.”

Standard Chartered averaged around a third of its pre-tax profit in tax havens, according to the report, while Deutsche Bank, Nord LB and RBS averaged more than 20% of their pre-tax profit in tax ports between 2014 and 2020.

A spokesman for Standard Chartered told CNBC that the bank has extensive business in both high-tax and low-tax areas.

“We are not artificially diverting profits to low-tax countries,” it said in a statement. “Taxes are seen as part of relevant business decisions and we only conduct tax planning that supports a true commercial activity. We do not enter into transactions whose sole purpose is to minimize or reduce tax costs.”

Meanwhile, a Deutsche Bank spokesman told CNBC via email that the lender has active subsidiaries and branches in nearly 60 countries.

“None of these countries are on the current EU list of non-cooperative countries and territories for tax purposes. In principle, Deutsche Bank reports its profits in the countries in which they are generated, which means that profits are also taxed. “In these countries,” they said. “Depending on the type of business activity, the profit per employee can vary. The effective tax rate of the Deutsche Bank Group in 2020 was 39%. ”

At the other end of the scale, Bankia BFA, Erste, Nykredit Realkredit, Swedbank and Banco Sabadell did not make any of their profits in tax havens during the seven-year sample period.

Eight banks, including Intesa Sanpaolo and HSBC, increased their presence in tax havens during the sample period, according to the EUTO. Seven lenders kept their presence in oases stable, while 16 banks reduced their use of tax havens.

The average effective tax rate paid by banks in the EUTO sample was 20% and ranged from 10 to 30%. According to the EUTO, seven banks have “a particularly low effective tax rate” of 15% or less: RBS, Barclays, Bayern LB, Nord LB, HSBC, KBC and Intesa Sanpaolo.

Spokespersons from Nord LB, RBS, Barclays, Bayern LB, KBC and Intesa Sanpaolo were not immediately available for comment upon request from CNBC.

The average corporate tax rate in the EU was 20.79% in 2020 and has decreased every year since 2014. Across Europe, the rate was 19.03% in 2020, with the corporate tax rate on the continent also gradually falling since 2014. Prices vary between European countries.

Demand for minimum tax rate

In July, 130 countries supported an OECD plan to reform international frameworks to ensure that multinational corporations pay a fair share of taxes wherever they operate. The reforms include plans for a minimum global corporate tax rate of 15%, which the OECD estimates would generate around $ 150 billion in additional global tax revenue annually.

EUTO researchers calculated that the European banks used in their analysis would have to pay 3 to 5 billion euros more in taxes every year if this rate were introduced globally. If the global minimum rate were raised to 21%, they would pay an additional 6 to 9 billion euros annually. With a minimum corporate tax rate of 25%, the 36 European banks included in the study would pay 10 to 13 billion euros in additional taxes annually.

GUANGZHOU, China – Richard Liu, founder and CEO of JD.com, is stepping back from day-to-day operations while the Chinese e-commerce giant claims to have created a new presidential role.

Xu Lei, who was previously CEO of JD Retail, will take on the role of President and take on the day-to-day running of JD.com and the joint development of various areas of the company’s business.

In the meantime, Liu will remain chairman and CEO, but will focus on formulating the e-commerce giant’s long-term strategies, mentoring younger management and “helping to revitalize rural areas,” the company said.

The latest moves come as China’s tech giants including Alibaba, ByteDance and Pinduoduo have undergone a leadership reshuffle in recent years, with the founders taking on more of a long-term strategic role.

“JD has a solid management structure with a large number of excellent executives who, represented by Mr. Lei Xu, firmly believe in JD’s long-term business philosophy, proven leadership skills and extensive industry experience,” Liu said in a statement.

It has been rumored for some time that Xu will take over the day-to-day running of the company. Liu has remained fairly unremarkable after being arrested in the United States in 2018 on rape allegations. Liu was not charged.

Liu still owns approximately 80% of the voting rights in JD.com. Founded in 2004, JD has grown into one of the largest e-commerce companies in China, expanding into areas such as health and logistics.

There were two other management changes. Xin Lijun will take on the role of CEO of JD Retail, having previously headed JD Health. Jin Enlin has been named CEO of JD Health, having previously been responsible for the company’s marketplace business.

“Looking ahead, the right long-term strategic design, the growth and development of young talent, and the healthy and coordinated development of various business areas will continue to be the driving force for JD to do the toughest and most challenging, but right and most valuable things for the industry “said Liu.

Elsewhere, South Korea’s Kospi lost 0.13%. In Australia, the S & P / ASX 200 lost 0.5%.

MSCI’s broadest index for Asia Pacific stocks outside of Japan was down 0.07%.

Investors will watch stocks in Thailand on Monday after the country’s prime minister and several other cabinet ministers weathered a vote of no confidence in parliament over the weekend, Reuters reported.

CNBC Pro’s Stock Picks and Investment Trends:

US employment data released on Friday fell far short of expectations as the economy added just 235,000 jobs in August. Economists polled by Dow Jones had sought 720,000 new hires.

Meanwhile, in line with estimates, the unemployment rate fell from 5.4% to 5.2%.

“In our view, the setback in the labor market recovery and the rise in serious Covid infections will cause the FOMC to wait before announcing it will reduce its monthly security purchases. We now expect the FOMC to reduce its monthly security purchases by 10 billion at its November 3rd meeting, “Commonwealth Bank of Australia analysts wrote in a Monday note.

Currencies and oil

The US dollar index, which tracks the greenback versus a basket of its competitors, hit 92.109 after falling over 92.4 recently.

The Japanese yen was trading at 109.75 per dollar, stronger than levels above 110.1 against the greenback last week. The Australian dollar changed hands at $ 0.7441 after climbing below $ 0.732 last week.

Oil prices were lower on the morning of Asian trading hours, with international benchmark Brent crude futures falling 0.95% to $ 71.92 a barrel. US crude oil futures fell 0.91% to $ 68.66 a barrel.

Simu Liu plays Shang-Chi in Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”.

Disney

Disney and Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” grossed an estimated US $ 71.4 million at the domestic box office this weekend.

It was the second highest opening for any movie released during the pandemic and the highest of any movie released on Labor Day weekend.

“Black Widow” currently holds the title for the highest opening during the pandemic at $ 80 million, and the previous record holder for the highest public holiday weekend release was “Halloween” in 2007, which was $ 26.3 million in the first three days domestically US dollars.

Internationally, “Shang-Chi” achieved an additional $ 56.2 million in ticket sales, bringing the estimated global total for Friday, Saturday and Sunday to $ 127.6 million. In particular, the film has yet to be approved for release in China.

“There is no doubt that Marvel’s massive brand equity has improved Shang-Chi’s prospects,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. “[And] a perfectly implemented theater-first strategy ensured that the interest and excitement among the fans was higher. “

“Shang-Chi” is the first Marvel film to be shown exclusively in theaters since the beginning of the pandemic. “Black Widow,” which was released in July, debuted in theaters and on Disney + Premier Access the same day.

Many studios followed a similar release schedule throughout the pandemic, choosing to make films available in theaters and via streaming services. This strategy was used at a time when the coronavirus vaccine was only just becoming available in the US and audiences were still cautious about returning to theaters.

However, it has become clear that the double release has led to a cannibalization of theater ticket sales.

Box office analysts foresaw a solid start to the film’s theaters as it had the second highest advance booking of all theatrical releases in 2021 after Black Widow, according to Fandango.

Disclosure: Comcast is the parent company of NBCUniversal and CNBC. NBCUniversal owns fandango.

LONDON – As Italy experiences an unusual period of political stability, fears grow that a possible departure of Prime Minister Mario Draghi next year could plunge the country back into chaos.

Valerio De Molli, CEO of the European House Ambrosetti Forum, told CNBC on Thursday that Italy is currently in the midst of a “window of stability”.

He added, however, “The political crisis in Italy is always next door, so I can’t bet on my whole family, but you know we have a window of stability, political institutional stability.”

Italy has seen various government formations in recent years, but the political scene has calmed down significantly since Draghi was appointed Prime Minister in February. The former head of the European Central Bank has managed to win support from both the left and the right political spectrum and is a popular figure among the electorate.

“Mario Draghi leads a coalition government, is able to understand and take into account the different sensitivities of the parties, but at the same time set and achieve goals so that the country understands that we are going a way and making progress,” said Gian Maria Gros-Pietro, chairman of the Italian bank Intesa Sanpaolo, told CNBC on Friday.

Italy’s days of stability, however, may be numbered.

“We shouldn’t have a political crisis in the next six to nine months, then we need the election of the President of the Republic,” said De Molli.

Draghi’s name is often mentioned as a potential candidate to replace incumbent President Sergio Mattarella next year. However, if Draghi became president, it would leave a large void at the executive level.

Carlo Cottarelli, former director of the International Monetary Fund, said: “The chances are good” that Draghi will become president.

“At that point this government would collapse and we would have to go to a general election; that is the greatest uncertainty,” Cottarelli told CNBC on Friday at the Ambrosetti Forum. He said it is possible that Draghi will not continue as prime minister beyond early next year.

Ambrosetti’s De Molli said he believed Draghi was best for Italy as prime minister, head of government and in charge of day-to-day operations.

“Honestly, what Draghi is doing is … right for the country,” De Molli told CNBC’s Steve Sedgwick. “He’s not for the left or the right, he does what he’s supposed to do.”

In addition to pushing a reformist agenda, Draghi oversees large investments in the country and its Covid vaccination efforts.

On Thursday, Draghi again urged Italians to get vaccinated against Covid-19 as he wants 80% of the people in the country to be vaccinated by the end of September. According to Our World in Data, 70% of Italians have received at least one dose and 61% are fully vaccinated. The nation was among the worst hit by the pandemic.

Naomi Osaka’s US Open defense ended in tears after a staggering loss to Leylah Fernandez before announcing an indefinite break from the sport.

The defending champion served for the match in the second set but surrendered, leaving the 18-year-old storming at the stunned Arthur Ashe Stadium for an impressive 5-7 7-6 (7-2) 6-4.

It was a surprise end to her first Grand Slam back after she retired from the French Open and Wimbledon due to mental health issues.

The future of the 23-year-old in the game must now be in doubt after saying she won’t play “for a while”.

In her post-game press conference, she held back tears and said, “It’s very difficult to articulate. Basically, I feel like I’m at this point where I’m trying to figure out what I want to do and I honestly don’t know when I’m going to play my next tennis match.

“I think I’ll take a break from playing for a while.

“How should I say this? I feel to myself lately when I win, I don’t feel happy. I feel more like a relief. And then when I lose, I feel very sad. I don’t think that that’s normal. I didn’t really mean to cry. “

When asked what caused the defeat, she added, “I don’t think it was her serve because I was able to come back pretty well against people who have served better. I don’t think that’s the cause because i was in this situation before.

“I think we are all dealing with some things, but I know that I am dealing with some things.”

It was Fernandez’s biggest win, the world’s number 73 career, and one that will usher in a fourth-round meeting with 2016 champion Angelique Kerber.

The 18-year-old Canadian said during her on-site interview: “I probably wanted to stay on the pitch a little longer and offer everyone a show. One hour on the pitch was just not enough for me.” .

“Right from the start, just before the game, I knew that I could win.

“I didn’t focus on Naomi, I just focused on myself and what I had to do.”

Kerber continued her resurgent summer by defeating Sloane Stephens 5-7 6-2 6-3.

The German announced she had to sleep in Flushing Meadows on Wednesday night when Storm Ida caused her match to be canceled late.

She said, “I mean we got canceled very late. I thought we could go straight to the hotel. But it was impossible because of the storm and rain and stuff.

“We stayed here until 3:30, 4 in the morning. I was trying to get some sleep because I had the game yesterday, as well as a few hours later. Yeah, that was my Wednesday night at the gym.”

Simona Halep fought to beat Elena Rybakina, but last year’s finalist Victoria Azarenka was beaten by Garbine Muguruza.

Halep’s season was marred by injuries and the Romanian is playing with heavy suspenders on her right thigh, but she saved four setpoints in a remarkable tie-break in the first set and finished strong with a 7-6 (13-11) 4 -6 6-3 win .

The ninth seeded Muguruza turned out to be too strong for Azarenka. The Spaniard prevailed 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 2 to prepare another blockbuster fight against the French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova.

One day after cheering on husband Gael Monfils for a second-round win, fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina made it into the fourth round with a 6-4 6-2 win over Daria Kasatkina beating American Danielle Collins 6-3 6- 3rd
