18 movies which might be mainly “IP orgies”

Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel is set in a dystopian year 2045 and follows Wade Wyatt, whose obsession with a global virtual reality game will pay off when he learns of an Easter egg that will give its finder the keys to the entire kingdom. Finding the necessary clues requires an in-depth knowledge of games and movies, and Wade is well prepared. It’s a kind of wish-fulfillment scenario in which all that otherwise useless knowledge finally pays off. Likewise, Steven Spielberg’s film adaptation contains dozens, if not hundreds, of pop culture recalls: references to Back to the Future, The Iron Giant, Gundam, The Shining, Jurassic Park, Batman, etc. So many, in fact, that the film probably never could have been without Spielberg Levels can be made to get all rights clearances. In the world of OASIS, four-quadrant multi-billion dollar global franchises are apparently niche problems, and only the neriest nerds could ever identify themselves.

The devastated Smithy household spent 4 months and all of their “hard-worked” TikTok cash previous to the “arson assault” on their dream residence

Despite his gratitude that his family made it safely, father Nick Smithy, 33, was crushed by the condition of his charred home after doing renovations.

The TikTok star told the BBC how desperate he was after spending four months “and all of our hard-worked money” building his dream home.

“The house is not in order,” he said in a video to his more than 2.5 million followers in the video-sharing app.

The 33-year-old had previously worked as a bricklayer seven days a week before finding social media success.

“Doing social media means that I am there for my children and enjoy their time and company and it was wonderful and happy.

“But it was also devastating and harmful,” he said.

“We have come to the realization that in the world of social media you are better hidden.”

Around 25 firefighters fought for 90 minutes on Wednesday night against the flames that spread over the house after a car was set on fire in the driveway.

Nick said to the perpetrators, “My six week old boy was behind those windows when you did this.

“If this had happened at 12 o’clock at night, we might not have come down the stairs.”

In another dramatic video of the damage, the father of three shared how his daughters, ages six and eight, were sleeping in their bedroom when the fire broke out

In tears, Nick said, “My girls were in this room, but you don’t mind, do you?

HAPPY ESCAPE

“One filmed it, the other did it.

“It’s my little girls’ room. They just have it the way they want it.”

But the former brick remained grateful that his family escaped unscathed, as “there may have been seven deaths”.

“For those 15 seconds of fun in your eyes, it could have taken my family many years.”

Nick, who describes himself as “a guy with ADHD who wants people to be fine, who spreads positivity and joy, and is a bit of an idiot in my family,” shared his suspicions about the motivation behind the shocking attack.

He continued, “I love to see how people are doing well. We want other people to thrive and do well, and I know that there are some people in life who struggle and don’t like it when other people are successful or are doing well. “

The cause of the fire is now being investigated and there have been no arrests, but the father defiantly swore it would not prevent him from sharing videos with his followers.

“I just want to be with my family and I want to be safe and I want to protect them, and we have to take a step back, readjust ourselves, reevaluate and figure out how best to move forward.

“At the end of the day, I won’t give up what makes us happy.”

Nick Smith and his partner Jess became famous after sharing videos with their kids Jack, Amelia, Isabella and Teddy.

In addition to clips showing sweet personal moments and pranks, the family also helps charities and raised around ÂŁ 60,000 worth of gifts for the Salvation Army over Christmas.

Exchange your senseless scrolling with one thing that no less than pays you a little bit

You can make money easily from online surveys, but they usually pay no more than a few dollars an hour, much less than what you would get with a part-time job with a minimum wage. However, better as a distraction than scrolling through Twitter, especially if you have to wait somewhere like the airport or the DMV.

How do paid online surveys work?

Information about your buying habits is a valuable asset. To better understand consumer behavior, companies rely on market research to make decisions based on focus groups, product tests, and surveys. To save time and money, some research companies are paying consumers to conduct surveys online. Most use a reward point system that can be redeemed for cash or, more often, gift cards from companies like Amazon or Starbucks.

The disadvantages of paid online surveys

Aside from the low pay, the biggest trade-off with paid online surveys is that you sell personal information. So you need to be comfortable sharing a lot of personal information, including your email address, age, gender, race, and annual income.

G / O Media can receive a commission

Unfortunately, this information can also exclude you from a survey – sometimes abruptly while you are conducting a survey – as market research firms may only be interested in information about specific demographics. This can be frustrating as some surveys take 15 to 20 minutes to complete. These surveys also lead to a lot of spam in your inbox. You should therefore set up a new, separate email account before you begin.

Get started with paid online surveys

Unfortunately, there are many fake surveys that scammers use to steal your personal information, so stick to legitimate websites. The DollarSprout personal finance site has a good look at some of the best and most trusted survey sites to get started with Here.

Most sites offer around 50 cents for a completed survey, but keep an eye out for survey sites that can offer $ 1 to $ 5, such as: Brand surveys, Pine cone research, KashKick or Valued opinions. Some of these websites also offer sign-up bonuses, either in the form of points or cash. Inbox dollars offers $ 5 to sign up (although you won’t be able to redeem it until you’ve earned $ 30) while new Swagbucks Members can claim a $ 10 sign up bonus after spending at least $ 25 at any of the site’s featured retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, or Walmart.

SPACs goal startups in Southeast Asia and buyers are taking be aware

SINGAPORE – Southeast Asia’s late startups are seeing growing interest from blank check companies looking to go public, a venture investor told CNBC.

According to Vinnie Lauria, managing partner of early-stage venture capital firm Golden Gate Ventures, more than 40 SPACs – or specialty acquisition companies – are targeting the region.

“SPACs have really put ASEAN on the map,” Lauria said Thursday in CNBC’s Street Signs Asia, referring to the Southeast Asian economic bloc, which consists of 10 member states. Other late-stage investors, including private equity firms, are taking note and writing large checks in the region, he said.

“The next decade will be a very competitive decade for CEOs. You have to scale from 5 to 5,000 much faster to be more competitive (and for) more money, ”said Lauria.

SPACs are letterbox companies set up to raise money through an IPO with the sole purpose of merging with an existing private company or acquiring it and listing it on the stock exchange.

Fundraising in SEA

CNBC Pro’s Stock Picks and Investment Trends:

The more established names in the region are preparing to be listed in public markets. Ride-hailing giant Grab announced in April that it would go public through a $ 39.6 billion SPAC merger, one of the largest blank check deals of all time. The newly merged Indonesian tech giant GoTo Group is also planning to go public soon.

Lauria told CNBC that a number of Golden Gate portfolio companies have been approached by SPACs and that many of them have stated that they are not ready to go public yet as there are advantages to being a private company.

“Many of our companies see (going public) as something that is a year, two or three years away. So you don’t automatically jump onto a SPAC, ”said Lauria. “When they’re ready to go public, be it a SPAC or a traditional IPO, they’ll make that call.”

Online classifieds company Carousell – one of Golden Gate’s portfolio names – is reportedly reviewing listing options on the SPAC route.

Trends

Golden Gate said in a report released Thursday that the number of IPOs in Southeast Asia will exceed 300 by 2030 as more local startups seek to list in domestic public markets. The venture firm expects an increase in medical technology startups as well as social commerce to dominate online transactions.

As the coronavirus pandemic pushed many physical business transactions online, Lauria pointed out that tech companies have seen strong growth in areas such as food delivery, telemedicine, e-commerce, and financial technology. This trend is expected to continue in the near future.

Around 400 million internet users live in Southeast Asia, 10% of whom went online for the first time in 2020. The internet economy in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand – the region’s largest economies – is forecast to exceed $ 300 billion by 2025, according to a report last year.

So, stretch the waist of your pants for a bit of extra room

After we parted How to Shrink Your Clothes, we were asked if this was possible with pants – so of course we went looking. Adjusting the waistline of your pants is especially helpful if you’re someone like me whose waistline tends to sit right between most factory sizes. Of course, you can work with a tailor to get bespoke pants or leave your store-bought pants out a bit, but if you just need a little extra space, you can try stretching them at home for a bit more breathing room.

How to stretch the waist of elastic pants

Elastic cuffs have a lot of stretch, but they also have a limit. If this border is just a bit too tight, you can use an iron to stretch the elastic a little more. Kippiski gives detailed stretch instructions – all you need is an iron, ironing board, and a couple of washcloths.

First, you’ll want to pull the elastic pants around the ironing board to keep them taut. Feel free to use pens if this helps hold the pants in place. Then turn your iron on the highest setting and place a warm, damp washcloth on the elastic band. Press down on the iron for about ten seconds, then let the pants rest for another ten seconds. Repeat this process for five to ten minutes, working your way around the waistband. The waist has stretched and you can repeat the process as many times as necessary to stretch it as much as possible.

How to stretch the waist of your pants

Pants are a little different than an elastic waistband because the fabric is flexible, but not nearly as stretchy as jogging pants or leggings. They will be very different, but you can still use an iron to loosen the waist.

As with elastic cuffs, start by stretching the pants on the ironing board. You can also use the back of a chair, cutting board, or other hard, heat-resistant surface. Then dampen the trousers visibly with a spray bottle or sponge Set the iron to the steam setting and iron along the waist. At the same time, pull and pull on the waist of the pants, stretching them as you go. Try on the pants to check the size and repeat the process if necessary.

How to Stretch the Waist of Your Jeans

Denim is an even harder material than pants, but it will still stretch with a little help. Tips bulletin shows several ways to stretch the waist of your jeans, including the inconvenient way of getting into the bathtub with them and wearing wet clothes.

If this is the route to go, fill the tub with warm water and step in with your jeans on and buttoned up, and make sure your pants are completely soaked before you step out. After that, towel dry and walk around for half an hour, doing lunges, squats or something else to stretch the pants and waist.

You can also try the same ironing technique used on pants, which is likely to be a lot less uncomfortable. Simply put on the jeans and dampen them with warm water using a spray bottle or a washcloth. Then take off the jeans and tighten them around a hanger at the waist. Make sure the hanger is wide enough to stretch out a little. Let your pants dry on the hanger and try them on again, repeating with a larger hanger if necessary.

The F45, supported by Mark Wahlberg, can be launched on IPO day. The actor promotes the power of coaching

0

Global fitness company F45 Training, supported by actor Mark Wahlberg, made its stock market debut on Thursday.

Under the ticker symbol FXLV, trading began on the New York Stock Exchange and rose to $ 17.75 per share on day one, representing a market cap of $ 1.6 billion. The IPO of 20.3 million shares on Wednesday night was in the middle of the expected range at $ 16 per share. The company raised $ 325 million. The stock moved back towards its offering price in afternoon trading, closing 1.25% at $ 16.20 per share.

Before the stock opened, Wahlberg, known for his physique and intense early morning exercise, told CNBC from the NYSE why he liked the company’s approach so much.

“Die-hard fitness enthusiasts who don’t have a schedule, have to do it in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning, don’t want to get on a bike. That’s fine. But at some point it will stagnate and boring, “said Wahlberg.” You want to be in there with the energy of people who work with you, are by your side, inspire you, push you and support you. “He added:” The Energy is absolutely amazing. “

F45 Training was founded in Australia in 2013 and offers so-called functional 45-minute studio and home training for people of all fitness levels. It features new workouts every day, inspired by a database of over 3,900 high-intensity interval training exercises that include both cardio and resistance exercises.

The company currently has 1,555 studios and 2,801 franchises in 63 countries and aims to ultimately have more than 23,000 studios worldwide.

“People of all fitness levels can come and do the training, and I had never seen that before,” Wahlberg said in the “Squawk Box”. “Someone who is clearly at the beginning of their fitness journey is training with a top athlete and can do the same exercises with modifications, never the same exercise twice. It’s absolutely fantastic. “

Mark Wahlberg, left, and Adam Gilchrist, CEO, F45 Training Holdings on the New York Stock Exchange, July 15, 2021.

In addition to Wahlberg, F45 Training said in its IPO filing that it has promotional relationships with basketball legend Magic Johnson, soccer star David Beckham, standout golfer Greg Norman and supermodel Cindy Crawford.

The company plans to use $ 190.7 million of net IPO proceeds to pay back debt, $ 2.5 million towards select cash awards for select employees, and $ 25 million towards the purchase of Flywheel indoor cycling -Chain.

“We will be opportunistic with this capital,” Adam Gilchrist, founder and CEO of F45, told CNBC, who stood alongside Wahlberg. “We’ve been financially conservative since 2013, we’ve never had an unprofitable quarter, and there aren’t many startups that have grown so rapidly that can boast about it.”

Gilchrist called the company’s acquisition of Flywheel a “big investment” because he said the bike chain invested $ 65 million in technology, saving F45 Training about $ 40 million in costs and believes the three years he would have needed F45 to develop this technology.

F45 Training prides itself on providing a judgment-free zone, Gilchrist said, adding that the company’s studios are considered “sanctuaries” for members with no mirrors and no scales. The program commends people for coming three times a week.

The average F45 training studio has 175 members, while the company’s break-even point – when total income equals total expenses – is 75 members, he said. The CEO added that 75% of the company’s members are female and 25% are male, with the general age group being between 25 and 42 years old.

The low membership develops a close community within the studios, he said, where members show up at 6 a.m. and know each other by name.

“We’re a premium product that pays up to $ 3,000 a year,” Gilchrist said, adding that the company’s monthly retention rate is in the “low single digits”.

Wahlberg said the company had seen more people visiting the studio in their second months of membership than before the Covid pandemic.

“We’re trying to create communities, and community is even more important to us than the actual training,” said Gilchrist. “We want people to have a third place to go. Obviously they have home, work and F45 is where … it’s a haven for people to just have 45 minutes of fun a day to have.”

F45 Training agreed to merge with Crescent Acquisition Corp. in June 2020. zu, a special-purpose acquisition firm, later canceled the deal as the pandemic closed several of its studios.

If your iPhone or iPad is running slower than normal, you might just need to clear the device’s browser cache for a quick boost in performance. Fed Chairman Powell is grilled by grumpy senators over inflation and local weather change

0

An economic recovery, rising wages and falling jobless claims were not enough to save Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell from complaints in the Senate Thursday.

During testimony before the Senate Banking Committee, Democrats grilled Powell about the central bank’s support for climate change initiatives and their withdrawal of financial protection, while Republicans asked Powell about his commitment to controlling inflation.

“Big banks make cash – and they spend it on executive pay and dividends and buybacks rather than lending to communities or raising capital to reduce risk,” said committee chairman Senator Sherrod Brown, D -Ohio. “The Fed should fight this trend and protect our progress from the greed and ruthlessness of Wall Street – not aggravate it.”

Ranking member Senator Pat Toomey, R-Pa., Criticized what he sees as the Fed’s inaction on inflation.

“The Fed’s policy is particularly worrying as the warning siren of problematic inflation is getting louder. Inflation is here and it is more severe than most – including the Fed itself – expected, ”he said. “Since the Fed has proven incapable of predicting inflation levels, why should we trust the Fed to predict the duration of inflation?”

The barbs on either side of the aisle may seem unfamiliar to Powell, who was otherwise lauded by lawmakers for acting swiftly to flush the U.S. economy with cash when the Covid-19 pandemic forced thousands of businesses to shut down.

The recent criticism of the Fed and its leader may have less to do with economics than with political attitudes. With members of both parties looking to get an early head start in the key 2022 midterm elections, Powell may find fewer public allies in Congress.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell adjusts his tie when he arrives to attend a “Semi-Annual Monetary Policy Report to Congress” hearing on Capitol Hill, Washington, on May 15, before a Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs hearing July 2021 to testify.

Kevin Lamarque | Reuters

House Financial Services Committee ranking member Patrick McHenry, RN.C., proved a notable exception on Wednesday when he endorsed Powell’s candidacy for a second term.

“You deserve and deserve another tenure as chairman of the Federal Reserve,” he said Powell. “You have proven that you are a steady hand during this pandemic or ongoing recovery.”

Progressive Democrats may hope to give President Joe Biden the opportunity to nominate a Democrat to run the central bank.

Brown and other members of his caucus have urged Powell to force lenders to fight climate change, reduce income inequality between executives and their employees, and increase capital needs for the country’s largest banks.

Some, like Massachusetts progressive Democrat Elizabeth Warren, argue that the Fed should be run by a chairman who proactively seeks to strengthen Wall Street oversight. Those hoping for a Democratic central bank chairman have said Fed Governor Lael Brainard is an excellent option for Biden.

“What I’m looking for is that the Fed’s balance sheet has been one step at a time over the past four years to weaken the regulation of Wall Street banks,” Warren told Powell on Thursday.

“There is no doubt that banks are stronger today than they were when the economy collapsed in 2008,” she added. “But that’s the wrong yardstick: the question is whether they’re strong enough to weather the next crisis and whether the Fed is tough enough to protect the American economy and American taxpayers.”

CNBC policy

Read more about CNBC’s political coverage:

A Congressman on one of the relevant committees told CNBC that such criticism should be put in context and that the Fed often becomes a sandbag for politicians hoping to be re-elected on promises of economic reform.

Still, the employee said that Powell’s handling of the coronavirus crisis had proven its worth and that Biden was offering a compelling case to keep him for a second term.

The Fed is “an easy target when things aren’t going perfectly or the economy isn’t booming. It’s really easy to go to the Fed and ask, ‘What are you doing to fix this?’ ”Said the agent.

The staff member added that lawmakers were grateful to the Fed’s leadership throughout the pandemic and that Powell was still very popular with members of both parties on Capitol Hill.

Powell spent much of his time before the House and Senate answering questions about the central bank’s inflation outlook and its plans for its easy monetary policy.

He began his semi-annual testimony on Wednesday by saying the Fed is still a long way from adjusting its billions in monthly purchases of government bonds and mortgage-backed securities and has no plans to change interest rates at this time.

He seemed to make up for that on Thursday when he admitted to the Senate that “inflation is well above target”.

Ultimately, the pace of inflation and employment growth will determine when Powell and his colleagues change the Fed’s monetary policy. Markets tend to fluctuate as the Fed plans to tighten monetary policy, so the timing of a possible cut or rate hike from November 2022 could play a crucial role.

“We announced that we would begin reducing our asset purchases if we believe the economy has made significant further progress since last December,” Powell said Thursday. “We are actively thinking about it now.”
