Why You Ought to Perceive Astrology Even If You Do not Imagine In It

I never look to the skies for advice or think that the planetary alignment on my birthday – July 5, 1989 – explains why I struggle with anxiety and love wrestling and playing the drums. I don’t think these things are predetermined by the cosmos, but you might think otherwise if you are really interested in astrology.

I don’t consider astrology a hobby – it is no more illusory than organized religion in many ways – but as far as science is concerned, it is fairly simple: there is no evidence that the movements of celestial bodies can affect a number of properties form the basis of a personality. Still, it is actually good to understand something that is loved by many, if only one is able to better understand the many people who believe in these things.

What is astrology

Astrology is an area of divination that seeks to understand our lives by connecting us to the cosmos, suggesting that the positioning of celestial bodies – primarily planets and stars – ethereally captures our feelings and personalities on earth. Perhaps the most important aspect of astrology is the birthday and where it falls on the zodiac calendar, gives you an astrological sign (mine is Cancer, for example) that becomes a kind of spiritual calling card; a Sagittarius is known to be a certain species, as are fish and so on.

If you’re interested in wading into your own cosmological DNA, you can get your own astrological horoscope or horoscope that technically everyone has. There are many resources that will show you for free. You can learn Read and decode this table on your own or seek advice from certain experts (there is a whole subreddit for it).

This diagram is basically the road map to your soul, which is funny because scientifically, astrology is a lot of hokum. A&M professor in West Texas Christopher S. Baird explains why this is so:

Astrology claims that astronomical bodies, depending on their date of birth, have an impact on people’s lives that goes beyond basic weather patterns. This claim is scientifically incorrect. Numerous scientific studies have disproved that astronomical bodies affect people’s lives according to their date of birth. Peter Hartmann and his colleagues, for example, examined over 4,000 people and found no connection between date of birth and personality or intelligence.

Why is it important to understand astrology?

Belief systems are the bedrock of human civilization, and even if something is technically not true – be it the foundation of a religion, ideology, subcultural trend, conspiracy, or something else – it can still have a huge impact on people’s lives and a greater one Society when enough people want it in existence or meaning. It’s worth at least understanding where certain belief systems come from and why people cling to them, because at least it helps make sense of the world.

This is essentially the gist of the Thomas theoremwhich was formulated in the 1920s by sociologists William Isaac Thomas and Dorothy Swaine Thomas. “Facts,” regardless of their actual accuracy, come to life when enough supporters believe them to be true. For a sick example, remember that January 6th, storming of the Capitol insurgents who firmly believed the US election was fraudulent? Belief in the Big Lie is just one example of a real-life manifestation of the work of WI Thomas, nearly 100 years after the concept was guessed.

Or in what is probably the most concise articulation of the Thomas theorem both Thomases wrote famously in 1928: “If men define situations as real, their consequences are real.”

While astrology is a much more innocuous example, it still helps to understand it, if only to clarify why people hold on to it with conviction. It can help people gain a sense of comfort amid the uncertainty and ever-changing winds of life, and while it should never be used as a substitute for actual science, it could serve as a place for people looking for some clarity search. In my opinion, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

The US navy mission in Afghanistan will finish on August 31, Bidenden says

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden said the US military mission in Afghanistan would end by August 31, and urged the country’s leaders to “come together” to prevent civil war.

“We didn’t go to Afghanistan to build a nation,” Biden said in a statement in the White House on Thursday.

After 20 years of war, the ideal conditions that the United States once hoped for before the withdrawal were never met.

“How many more, how many thousands of America’s daughters and sons are you willing to risk?” Said Biden, who first announced the planned withdrawal of the US armed forces in April. “How long would you let her stay?”

“It is up to the Afghans to decide the future of their country,” said the president.

Biden told reporters he was confident the Afghan military could hold the country away from the advancing Taliban, citing the 300,000 Afghan troops the US has trained and equipped over the past two decades.

“They clearly have the ability to keep the government in place, the question is whether they will come together and do it,” he said.

The US and NATO military withdrawal has raised concerns that Afghanistan may fall into further bloodshed. The country’s supreme American general, Scott Miller, has previously warned that if the Taliban increase their influence, civil war could ensue.

In the past few weeks, the Taliban have put up staggering setbacks on the battlefield, capturing stocks of US military-provided weapons and vehicles from Afghan forces that have fled or surrendered.

Biden insisted that America will not give up its commitment to creating a stable and secure Afghanistan, referring to the humanitarian and security assistance the US administration will continue to provide.

He also firmly opposed that the United States would be responsible for the deaths of Afghans killed in the civil war.

“No, no, no, no,” he said, “it is up to the people of Afghanistan to decide which government they want.”

Biden rejected the idea that a takeover of the country by the Taliban was inevitable. However, he conceded that Afghanistan is unlikely to be ruled by a single central government in the future, suggesting that the US sees a power-sharing deal as the best outcome that could come in the months ahead.

For a long time, Biden made no secret of the fact that he saw no military solution to Afghanistan’s challenges.

Marked by centuries of foreign invasions and ravaged by ethnic divisions, Afghan civilians still elude things like basic security, human rights and good governance to this day.

He said the original US mission to Afghanistan – to prevent terrorists from using the country as a base to attack the United States – was complete.

“With the threat of terrorism now raging in many places, it makes little sense to me and our leaders to keep thousands of troops on the ground in just one country, which costs billions each year,” Biden said on Nov.

As the fourth president to lead the war in Afghanistan, he would not shift the responsibility onto a fifth.

That month, the White House confirmed that US forces had initiated the Herculean withdrawal process from Afghanistan.

The removal of approximately 3,000 US soldiers coincides with the 20th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks that spurred America’s entry into protracted wars in the Middle East and Central Asia.

Last week, the US military quietly left Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, a historic milestone after Biden’s order to withdraw US forces from the country.

Two US officials told NBC News on condition of anonymity that the decision had not yet been officially announced that the US had turned the air base over to the Afghan National Security and Defense Force.

In 2012, at its peak, Bagram looked through more than 100,000 U.S. soldiers. It was the largest US military facility in Afghanistan.

The Afghan district administrator of Bagram told The Associated Press that the US exit was overnight and without consultation with local officials. As a result, dozens of looters stormed through the unprotected gates.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid described the US withdrawal from Bagram as “a positive step” and told NBC News that the Taliban had no plans “for the time being” to occupy the sprawling air force base, which is about 60 kilometers north of Kabul.

“We are all watching the security situation with concern,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told Fox News on Wednesday.

“That is why we in this administration put so much diplomatic energy into trying to find a diplomatic solution and develop a relationship with the Afghan armed forces that will enable them to remain competent and capable in the field,” added Kirby.

Still, it had become clear to US defense officials and diplomats in recent years that the main argument for keeping troops in Afghanistan – that Afghanistan’s central government needs US troops on the ground to secure and maintain a diplomatic truce with the Taliban – was not a viable one long-term plan was.

“We’ve given that argument a decade,” Biden said in April. “It has never been effective – not when we had 98,000 soldiers in Afghanistan and not when we only had a few thousand.”

“Instead of going back to war with the Taliban, we need to focus on the challenges that lie ahead,” said Biden. “We need to track and disrupt terrorist networks and operations that have spread far beyond Afghanistan since 9/11.”

On Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had completed more than 90% of the entire withdrawal process from Afghanistan.

The update from US Central Command, which oversees America’s military presence from northeast Africa to South Asia, comes roughly two months ahead of the deadline Biden set earlier this year.

Twenty years later, America’s longest war has killed around 2,300 US soldiers and wounded thousands more. It is estimated that more than 100,000 Afghans have been killed or wounded since the conflict began.

RHOBH: Tom Girardi’s victims are allowed to chase Erika Jayne’s cash

How The real housewives of Beverly Hills Star Erika Jayne works to clear her name and protect her assets, a judge has allowed Tom Girardi’s victims to hunt their money. Erika’s estranged ex-husband owes millions to his former customers, partners, and lenders. It doesn’t look like Erika will get off easily in his legal cases, and now it looks like she could be blamed for Tom’s dubious business practices.

Show fans watch Erika handle her life-changing divorce and prepare for the legal troubles she knew were on the horizon. The current season of RHOBH follows the “Expen $ ive” singer who works to distance herself from Tom after falling chaotically for decades as a renowned legal titan. Tom is accused of stealing and withholding funds from struggling victims who have relied on him for their legal concerns, as well as hungry partners and lenders with whom he did business. Since Erika has been married to Tom for 20 years, many believe she was guilty of helping her husband spend and hide his misappropriated income. Despite the divorce petition, Erika was named in some lawsuits with her ex-husband and is also on the hook for the victims, who are owed millions.

Things only get worse for the Bravo star after a judge ruled in favor of a family that Tom lost a lawsuit last year. Just this week, the judge ruled Joe Ruigomez, Jaime Ruigomez and Kathy Ruigomez could initiate a debt collection lawsuit against Erika of RHOBH after learning that Tom had given her $ 20 million, Us Weekly reports. The Ruigomez family owes $ 11 million from Tom’s estate, which was given to court-appointed trustees earlier this year. A recent look at Tom’s fortune revealed that his law firm had previously granted Erika’s company a $ 20 million loan. When this information came out, many became skeptical of Erika’s allegation of innocence.

Joe was among the victims in Hulu’s recent documentary The Housewife And The Hustler. His family claims that Tom “basically robbed” Joe, a fire victim who survived the 2010 San Bruno gas pipeline explosion. Joe was awarded millions in a settlement process and Tom “managed” his earnings. After a judge learned how much Erika had received from the disgraced attorney, a judge ruled that the reality star may have to repay them. While RHOBH did not charge Erika, a judge ordered her to hand over her financial records by July 21.

Over time, Erika moves closer to having her finances investigated and disclosed. In addition, it is also getting closer and closer to having to appear in a possible series of statements. Her lawyers said Erika was ready to testify against her ex-husband. In the current season of The real housewives of Beverly Hills‘Erika didn’t talk much about Tom as she remembers his forms of abuse during their two decades as a married couple.

Africa suffers worst spike in Covid circumstances, officers put together for third wave

Africa, where less than 2% of the population is vaccinated against Covid-19, saw the worst increase in cases since the pandemic began last week, the World Health Organization said on Thursday.

The second largest continent saw more than 251,000 new Covid cases in the week ending July 4, a 20% increase from the previous week and a 12% increase from the January high. Active cases in Africa recently surpassed 642,000, beating a peak in the second wave of 528,000 active cases in January, according to a BBC analysis of the Johns Hopkins University data.

“Africa has just marked the continent’s worst pandemic week ever. But the worst is yet to come as the fast-paced third wave continues to accelerate and gain new terrain,” said Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa. “The end of this steep climb is still weeks away. Cases are now doubling every 18 days compared to all 21 days a week ago.”

More than sixteen African countries, including Malawi and Senegal, are seeing an increase in new cases. In at least 10 of these countries, the more easily transferable delta variant was found.

Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia, Zambia, Rwanda and Tunisia are also experiencing some of the worst spikes in infections, the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Hospital admissions have increased more than 40% across the continent in recent weeks.

“The alarm bells should ring,” says Dr. Tom Kenyon, Chief Health Officer at Project HOPE and former director of the Center for Global Health at the US CDC. He said Africa’s rate of new cases will soon surpass Asia’s. “Given the horrors we have just seen in India, this should be cause for concern and action.”

He said the Covid emergency in Africa “could get worse than anywhere else we’ve seen”.

South Africa is currently battling a devastating third wave of infections after the Delta variant forced the country to lock it down again on June 28. There is currently a 9 p.m. curfew in the country while less than 1% of its residents are against Covid. are vaccinated. Across the continent, less than 2% of people were vaccinated due to a slow international introduction of vaccines that kept poor countries waiting for life-saving syringes. The 50 million doses administered so far in Africa represent only 1.6% of the doses administered worldwide.

“Vaccination nationalism, in which a handful of nations have taken the lion’s share, is morally unjustifiable and an ineffective strategy for public health,” said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a press conference on Wednesday. Tedros also blamed the lack of immunization justice for a “wave of death” in parts of the world, including Africa.

Vaccine deliveries by Covax, a global initiative aimed at ensuring fair access to Covid vaccines, are finally picking up speed after months of delay. More than 1.6 million doses have been shipped to Africa under the initiative and more than 20 million doses of Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer vaccines are expected to be shipped to the continent in the near future. Norway and Sweden will also donate large quantities of vaccines to Africa.

“Some vaccine shipments are expected in August, but nowhere near what is needed,” said Kenyon, who also served as CDC country director in Botswana, Namibia and Ethiopia. “To be successful, vaccine supply must be paired with trained labor and delivery systems.”

A total of 66 million doses were shipped to Africa, of which 40 million doses were delivered under bilateral agreements, 25 million via Covax and 800,000 doses via the African Union’s African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team.

“With much larger Covid-19 vaccine shipments expected in July and August, African countries must use this time to prepare for a rapid roll-out,” said Moeti. By comparison, the US has administered approximately 332 million shots to 55% of its population, according to the US CDC.

Use further espresso filters to switch paper towels and tea luggage

Paper coffee filters sell only in packages of the thousands for less than $ 2. This is a universal fact.

So what should you do if you forego coffee or buy a new coffee machine that does not require a paper filter?

Glad you asked. The video above shows many more uses for these curly doilies. Since they are heat-resistant and remove even the smallest residue of liquids, you can use them to sift tea, soup and even wine.

They’re also great replacements for paper towels, rags, or more expensive microfiber pads. Also, their porosity allows air to flow through them, which means they can be used to absorb odors by filling them with baking soda without any powder seeping through.

This vegan cabbage dish is ideal for a comfy guide membership

Hello everyone and welcome back to Prix Fixed, Lifehacker’s column of menu planning advice.

Today’s e-mail comes to us from far down in the south, like in the southern hemisphere:

I recently joined a new book club and am hosting for the first time. Because of the Venn diagram of everyone’s dietary restrictions, everything must be vegetarian, dairy-free, and gluten-free, although eggs are fine. Meeting these restrictions only for a casual midweek dinner isn’t a problem, but I’d like to think that I’m a pretty good home cook and that my heart was set on showing off a little. I find it difficult to find a main course. Normally I would rely on a fancy seafood roast or pasta as the exciting centerpiece, but obviously those won’t work here. Risotto is a no-go because I have to be awake and take care of my guests and cannot babysit the risotto. Some things I can do or at least prepare the day before or earlier in the day would be great. I would like a main course, a salad and another side dish I think? I’m also in the southern hemisphere and it’s getting winter here, so ideally nothing that relies too much on summer products. I hope you can help me!

Many Thanks,

(Name withheld so I can do all the honors when everyone compliments my menu planning)

First of all, I would like to apologize for responding so late to this particular request. The emailer had told me they were hosting the first week of July which we are stuck in, so I sincerely hope I won’t be late with that. (If so, put it aside for the next time you host and please send me an angry email chastising me for being late.)

Well, let’s get down to business. Although I am an omnivore with a preference for roasting, smoking and a lot of pork, I also like to cook for vegans. It’s easy to hide sub-par skills behind bacon, cheese, and butter, but truly seasoned chefs know how to make vegetables and other pet-free foods sing. For me, however, it is very fortunate that this meal takes place in the southern hemisphere, because it is cold there and cold weather calls for smothered cabbage.

Choked cabbage is a recipe from AA Newtonwho recently became vegan, but always loved vegetables. This recipe is cheap, easy, and mostly convenient, which means it won’t distract you from hosting and entertaining. You might be tempted to go extravagant with the cabbage – but don’t! This recipe is best when made with the common green boy.

We do too a delicious dip from a humble tin of artichokes, as well live radicchio salad (for color and crunch). Yes, there are a lot of leaves, but bitter, crispy radicchio is very different from sweet, melted cabbage.

Shopping

But before you can cook, you need to do some shopping.

The list:

  • About a 2 pound humble head of kale
  • 1 head of radicchio
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 15-ounce can of artichoke hearts or brine bottoms (the bottoms are less stringy so grab these when you find them)
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Maple syrup
  • Dijon mustard
  • 2 types of gluten-free crackers (use something thin and crips and something thick and shady)
  • Fresh thyme
  • Fresh sage
  • 1 pack of pecan pieces (at least one cup)
  • Olives and cucumbers of your choice

Pantry items you likely have but may need to buy:

  • salt
  • pepper
  • Olive oil (you need a fair bit so grab a fresh bottle if you run out)

The plan

Imagine gluten-free crackers instead of bread!Imagine gluten-free crackers instead of bread! Photo: AA Newton

Now that we have our ingredients, it’s time to cook. If you want, you can prepare the artichoke spread the day before. This spread is surprisingly creamy and full of artichoke flavor, but you need to spice it up with some salt, fat, and heat. To make roughly one cup of delicious artichoke spread you will need:

  • 1 / 4-1 / 2 cup of flavorful olive oil made from olive oil
  • 1 15-ounce can of artichoke hearts or bottoms in brine, drained
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic, peeled and mashed
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, or another acidic ingredient
  • 1/2 teaspoon of smooth Dijon mustard
  • Salt to taste

Heat two tablespoons of oil in a large pan over medium heat. When it’s nice and hot, add the drained artichokes and cloves of garlic. Cook for 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the vegetables are caramelized around the edges.

Scrape the contents of the pan into a blender or other container that you normally use with your hand blender. Pour the lemon juice or vinegar into the empty pan, scrape off any stuck brown pieces and add these to the blender as well. Add the mustard and puree the mixture until a slightly lumpy, gray-yellow paste is formed. It looks gross at this point, but don’t worry, the oil will smooth things out.

With the engine running, drizzle in 1/4 cup of oil and blend until smooth. If it seems a little too thick, gradually add up to 1/4 cup more oil and puree it until you get the consistency you want. Season to taste with salt and serve immediately (if you are preparing it right before the meeting) or pour into a covered container and store in the refrigerator until your fellow readers arrive. Serve with the thin and crispy gluten-free crackers, cucumber and olives.

Start making the cabbage two hours before your friends are due to arrive. First, collect your ingredients. To prepare this extremely soothing, yet amazingly simple dish, you will need:

  • A kale head about 2 pounds with any hard, withered outer leaves removed
  • 1/2 cup of olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon table salt, plus more to taste
  • 2 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced
  • Lots of freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Preheat oven to 325 ° F. Pour the olive oil into a large Dutch oven (or other large, heavy saucepan with a lid); Add the onions and half a teaspoon of salt and cook over medium heat until soft and light golden brown, at least 20 minutes.

While the onions are cooking, cut the cabbage in half through the core and remove it by making wedge-shaped cuts in each half; When the exposed end of the core is dry and woody, cut it off and discard it. Finely chop whatever is left of the pit and add to the saucepan to cook with the onions and oil. Grate the cabbage leaves as finely as possible and set aside.

When the onions and cabbage are nice and brown, stir in the garlic and plenty of black pepper. Let sizzle for about a minute, until the garlic is just beginning to brown and the pepper smells great, then add the shredded cabbage leaves. Gently stir and swirl to coat each individual cabbage strip with oil. Add the vinegar and another large pinch of salt, stir again and cover the saucepan.

Place the saucepan in the oven and roast for 1 to 1 1/2 hours (or more), stirring once or twice. The end product should be meltingly soft, sweet, and caramelized around the edges; keep cooking until it looks and tastes the way you want it.

Instead of breadcrumbs, use pieces of pecan which are frankly better.Instead of breadcrumbs, use pecan pieces, which frankly are better.Photo: Claire Lower

When you have about half an hour left to prepare the cabbage, make the salad. To do this, you need:

  • 1 cup pecan pieces
  • 1/2 cup of olive oil
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard
  • 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 small sage leaves, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh thyme leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 small head of radicchio

Toast the pecan pieces in a dry pan over medium heat, stirring frequently, until warm and fragrant (about five minutes). Put aside. For the dressing, put the remaining ingredients in a sealable glass and shake until it is emulsified. The dressing can be kept in the refrigerator for about a week.

If you made the dressing beforehand, take it out of the fridge about an hour before dinner and shake it well to make sure everything is evenly distributed. Wash and dry the radicchio and pluck the leaves into bite-sized pieces.

Once the cabbage is soft, sweet, and caramelized, give it a little flavor and adjust with more salt and lemon if necessary. Serve with lemon wedges and the thick and shabby gluten-free crackers. Drizzle the dressing over the salad, sprinkle the pecan pieces on top and serve with an extra portion of each on the side. There are many leaves, but these leaves are at very different ends of the flavor spectrum. Bitter and sweet, crunchy and soft, colorful and beige – with this special combination you get it all.

The only thing left to chance were actually the vows, because Chmerkovskiy had made the risky decision to inspire it. “People said to me, ‘You will see them go down and you will know exactly what to say,'” he told Us Weekly. “What they didn’t say is, ‘You’ll see them, freeze, and forget what you meant to say.'”

Still: “It was beautiful,” insisted Murgatroyd. “He made me cry.” Then came the kiss-sealed moment, followed by the rainbow that felt like it was commissioned just for her. As Chmerkovskiy put it, “People have lost their shit!”

Authorities bond yields are falling on financial progress worries, Covid

0

The US 10-year Treasury yield fell as low as 1.25% on Thursday, its lowest level since February, and continued a sharp reversal in the bond market amid growing concerns about the pace of the global economic recovery.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell 6 basis points to 1.261% at 7:20 a.m. ET after hitting 1.25% at the start of the session. The yield on the 30-year government bond fell 7.6 basis points to 1.868%. The returns move inversely to the prices and 1 basis point corresponds to 0.01 percentage points.

“This decline in bond yields could suggest that the inflation spurt is temporary and / or that the delta variant will slow growth, although that seems extreme this morning at 1.25% +4 tons in just over a year to over 8 Tons, ”said Ed Hyman, Evercore ISI founder and chairman and director of economic research, in a statement released Thursday.

The proliferation of the more transferable variant of Covid-19 has fueled concerns about a slowdown in global economic growth and sent investors to the safety of US Treasuries. Japan has declared a state of emergency in Tokyo, which reportedly could lead to a ban on spectators for the upcoming Olympics.

The 10-year yield has fallen about 18 basis points since last Friday, and the 30-year yield has lost a similar amount. The decline in yields over the past few weeks is a sharp reversal from a dramatic spike that began in late 2020. After hitting below 1% in March, the benchmark 10-year return rose to above 1.7% in March before hovering near 1.6% for much of April.

The move has puzzled investors and some believe that it is mainly technical factors that are driving the decline in returns.

“Inflation expectations have been stable, suggesting that economic forces are not at the center of the downturn,” wrote Christopher Harvey, director of equity strategy at Wells Fargo, in a Thursday release titled “Misleading Bond Signals.” “Rate Player and our Macro team inform us that technical issues related to liquidity, positioning and forced purchases are driving the bus.”

The decline in long-term interest rates even comes as the Federal Reserve signals that it is heading for a possible tightening of its monetary policy stance. Investors believe that the central bank’s first step would be to slow down its asset purchases while keeping interest rates at historic lows. Short-term rates have not fallen at the same rate as long-term, which has led to what is known as a flattening of the yield curve for government bonds.

It did so after the Federal Reserve posted the minutes of its last meeting on Wednesday, Jan. June had published.

Some members said the economic recovery is progressing faster than expected and is accompanied by an oversized spike in inflation, both of which argue in favor of taking the Fed off the policy pedal.

However, the prevailing mindset was that there should be no rush and that the markets must be well prepared for change.

Is Cloudy Egg Whites Secure To Eat?

Unlike commercially produced, processed foods and beverages, eggs can vary widely in appearance and composition. They come from a chicken, not a factory, which means these variations are to be expected not only from chicken to chicken but also from egg to egg. I once bought a carton of eggs that had 11 double yolks. (I thought I was a witch, but luckily, that’s no longer frowned upon.) Eggs are a game of chance, I say, but variations in appearance can be terrifying.

My parents recently got some chickens (they came to the country with their new house) which was great because I only had to buy eggs once in the past six months. Fresh eggs, bought straight from the chicken (or bought at the farmers market), can have even more variations than those available at the grocery store. Sometimes the shell is wrinkled, sometimes the egg is quite small, and sometimes the egg white is cloudy.

If you’re used to seeing perfectly translucent egg whites, cloudy egg whites can be scary, but there is nothing to worry about. In fact, it’s a reason to celebrate. A cloudy white is a sign that your egg is super fresh. This cloudiness is due to dissolved carbon dioxide that has had no chance of escaping through the shell and it won’t affect the taste of your egg in any way.

However, a pink white is not something you want to eat. According to the USDA, a pink tint or a pearly white “indicates spoilage by Pseudomonas bacteria”. This is different from a blood stain in the yolk, which is caused by “rupturing one or more small blood vessels in the yolk at ovulation” but which is still perfectly safe to eat. (If you’re excited at the sight of blood, just mix it up.)
