The World Health Organization again called on world leaders to postpone the administration of Covid-19 boosters for at least another month to allow poorer nations to vaccinate more of their population with first doses.

More than 5 billion Covid vaccine syringes have been given worldwide, 75% of which were given in just 10 countries, according to the WHO.

“That is why I have called for a moratorium on boosters, at least until the end of this month, so that the countries that are furthest behind can catch up,” said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a briefing on Wednesday.

The director of the global health agency said that some high-income countries have adult vaccination rates of 50%, while low-income countries, including many in Africa, still have adult vaccination rates of less than 2%. The U.S. has fully vaccinated more than 52% of its population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Extra doses may be required for people with compromised immune systems or immunity drops, “but right now we don’t want widespread use of boosters in healthy people who are fully vaccinated,” Tedros said.

Nearly 1 million Covid-19 vaccine booster shots have been given in the U.S. since health officials approved additional shots of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines to people with compromised immune systems on Aug. 12, according to the CDC.

President Joe Biden said the US plans to distribute Covid booster vaccinations widely starting the week of September 20, pending approval from the Food and Drug Administration and CDC scientists.

US stock futures barely changed on Wednesday night after the S&P 500 closed the first trading session of the month near the flatline.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose 5 points, or 0.01%. The futures on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 gained 0.03% and 0.04%, respectively.

Shares in ChargePoint, the maker of charging systems for electric vehicles, rose more than 13% in expanded trading after reporting excellent quarterly results. Pet retailer Chewy and youth-focused retailer Five Below were down 10% and 9%, respectively, following the release of their quarterly results.

In the regular trading session, the Dow fell 48.20 points, or 0.1%, to 35,312.53. The S&P 500 ended the day near the flat line, gaining just 1.41 points, or 0.03%, to 4,524.09 points. The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.3% to 15,309.38, a record close.

“The relentless uptrend amid low volatility in US equities continues, and with breadth, volume positioning and sentiment all in our view positive, we expect the rally to extend to new highs,” Credit Suisse said on Wednesday in a message.

Energy stocks fell during the day as oil and gas prices continued to rise and Hurricane Ida ceased oil production and refining operations. These losses were offset by gains in utility and real estate stocks.

Small-cap stocks made bigger moves, with the Russell 2000 Index gaining 0.6% on Wednesday, up from 2.1% in August. Analysts and investors say the move in small caps is linked to an up move in value stocks.

US companies created fewer jobs than expected in August, according to ADP private payroll data released Wednesday. That did little to move the stock markets, but it did flatten bond yields.

Investors await the weekly report on initial jobless claims on Thursday and the Labor Department’s non-farm payroll report on Friday, which could provide clues as to Fed policy.

Chipmaker Broadcom is expected to publish its quarterly results after Bell Thursday.

Cash Laundering Investigation: ED Seized 45 Actual Property Valued at Rs 363.51 crores from Hyderabad-based MBS Group, Promoters of the Fraud by MMTC Restricted

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has 45 immovable properties valued at Rs 363.51 crore owned by the Hyderabad-based MBS Group and its promoters in their ongoing money laundering investigation into a case allegedly defrauding a public sector company in buying gold bullion the buyer’s name attached credit system.

See Zee Business Live TV Streaming below:

The agency seized on 26th 2002.

ED initiated an FIR-based money laundering investigation registered by the Anti-Corruption Division of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Hyderabad, against Sukesh Gupta and his companies for letting MMTC Limited (a public sector company) purchase gold bullion had cheated under the buyer’s credit system.

Sukesh Gupta, in active acquiescence with a few officials at the MMTC Hyderabad, has continuously raised gold without currency cover and without adequate collateral, the ED said in a statement.

“The businessman’s fees were constantly being misreported to MMTC headquarters and, without making up for existing losses, his firms continued to get gold from MMTC for their personal benefit, causing a loss of Rs 504.34 billion, inclusive of public money Interest up to May 31 this year in the amount of 277.52 billion rupees to MMTC “, it said.

The CBI filed an indictment against Sukesh Gupta and others in 2014.
During the ED investigation, it emerged that Sukesh Gupta had been working with the various officials at the MMTC Hyderabad and painted the wrong picture of his accounts and continued to raise gold to continue his business as usual.

“Where MMTC ultimately suffered a massive loss, Sukesh Gupta’s business flourished and made huge profits,” the official statement said.

Based on his business profile, the ED said, Sukesh Gupta took out loans, entered into real estate deals, and grew his business on behalf of various affiliates.

“Throughout the investigation, Sukesh Gupta’s behavior has been evasive and non-cooperative, and he has failed to meet the onus of proof placed on him under the 2002 PMLA.

“In another case under FEMA, in 1999, ED said it ruled and fined the MBS group around Rs 222 billion.
Sukesh Gupta also concluded an OTS (One Time Settlement) with MMTC in 2019.

But according to the latest reports from MMTC, Sukesh Gupta has not deposited funds and the OTS has failed.

The ED has now identified 45 immovable lots owned by it and its affiliates and their directors, and has provisionally seized those lots under PMLA, 2002 to safeguard the proceeds of crime, the agency added.

When Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine was approved in August, it was only approved as a two-dose series for children aged 16 and over. However, because fully approved vaccines and drugs can be used “off-label”, many of us wondered whether providers could give the vaccine to children or give a booster to people who were otherwise out of the question. Unfortunately, that’s probably not the case. The reason relates to some specific government papers, but first let’s talk about what “off-label” means.

What does “off-label” mean?

Drugs (and vaccines) are approved by the FDA for specific purposes. But providers are allowed to use their judgment to decide when and how to prescribe something. For example, a chemotherapy drug may be approved for one type of cancer but prescribed for another type of cancer. This is one of the examples the FDA cites your explainer of off-label use; Perhaps there isn’t an approved drug for your condition, or you tried the approved drugs and they didn’t work.

So, in theory, a provider could give a vaccine to an age group or for a purpose for which it is not approved. That would not be recommended, but it would be legal.

Why the COVID vaccine is different

The way COVID vaccines are distributed in the US is different from most vaccines or drugs. All doses of the vaccines were actually purchased from the federal government and not ordered directly from the vendors. Providers must comply with the terms of the CDC COVID-19 vaccination programwhich only involves administering the vaccines as recommended.

G / O Media can receive a commission

If a provider were to off-label the vaccine anyway, they could be kicked out of the program and unable to deliver future doses of the vaccine. They may also not fall under the Public Standby and Emergency Preparedness Act (PREP Act)that provides immunity from liability in the event that something should go wrong.

There are also disadvantages from the patient’s point of view, as the CDC explains here. For one thing, the insurance company may not pay the vaccine administration fee, so patients or parents will have to take this into account. And if the person receiving the vaccine has side effects caused by the vaccine, they are not eligible for compensation like they are for other vaccination violations.

the The American Academy of Pediatrics also advises against off-label use for children, notes that the doses being tested in childhood vaccine trials are different from those of the adult vaccine and that we do not yet have enough information on the safety of the vaccine in children. Pfizer says they are expected to apply for an emergency permit for ages 5-11 by the end of September so we may not have to wait long. And if you’re hoping for a booster for yourself, that could (legally) come as early as September 20th, so just stay seated.

Why do we still have physical IDs in the digital age? I don’t need my credit card if I can use Apple Pay; I no longer need my MetroCard with Express Transit; but still I have to bring it with me the whole wallet with me wherever a driver’s license is required. Fortunately, that seems to change with iOS 15, as Apple allows you to add an official ID to your wallet app.

The new function is tied to iOS 15, so not yet live. But we already know a lot about it; Apple lets you add your driver’s license or state ID to Wallet as long as your state supports it. Once added, it can be used as you pass new safety lanes at participating airports. Although this is the first use case, we hope that this ID in wallet function will be accepted in more forms in the future, e.g. B. when buying alcohol or other age-restricted goods.

How to add your ID to your iPhone’s wallet app

Once iOS 15 is out and the ID is live in Wallet, setup is relatively easy. It’s the same initial process to add other types of cards to the app. Just tap the (+) Button at the top of Wallet’s main screen and follow the instructions to add a license or ID. If you have an Apple Watch, you’ll also be asked to add the ID to the watch.

Next, iOS will ask you to scan your ID and ask for a selfie. Then, according to Apple, your iPhone will securely send the selfie to your state to verify your identity and let you record a series of face and head movements as an added layer of security. Once your state has verified your identity, your ID will be added to the wallet app.

How to use your ID in Wallet

While there are certainly many potential uses for the ID in Wallet, Apple’s main idea right now is to show your license or ID to the TSA when you go through airport security. All you have to do is tap the identity reader with your iPhone. When you do, you will see a prompt showing the information TSA requested. This information is not shared with TSA until you authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID.

Apple insists this feature is secure; All of your identification information is encrypted on your device so that it cannot be accessed by third parties. If you share this information with a TSA identity reader, this process is also encrypted so that the data is protected in transit.

States in which you can use the ID in wallet

At this point in time, the ID in Wallet is not yet active because it is an exclusive iOS 15. There is no schedule for when the feature will go live. Apple hasn’t confirmed if this is a day-one feature for iOS 15 or if it will take some time. By then, Apple confirmed that Arizona and Georgia will be the first states in the country to opt for the ID in Wallet.

However, other states are also confirmed; they will only use the feature for some time after Arizona and Georgia. They are:

  • Connecticut
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Maryland
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah

The influencer’s parents, Mark Gagnier and Jeanetta GroverShe talked about her beloved daughter who was born Jenae Gagnier, in an interview with ABC 13 published September 1. During the conversation, their grieving moms and dads echoed how much the 33-year-old social media star was loved and reflected on the circumstances surrounding her murder.

Mark said he went to his daughter’s house on Sunday, August 29, after a friend reported they couldn’t reach her. “I know my daughter and when I got to my daughter’s house and it was locked and she doesn’t answer the phone, which is not like her, I knew something was wrong so I didn’t hesitate to kick the door.” he said ABC 13. “And what I’ve seen, I don’t want a parent to go through.”

He found her on the floor and initially suspected that she might have accidentally fallen down the stairs. However, when he saw the alleged suspect’s body Kevin Alexander Smart, Mark realized “it wasn’t an accident.”

Practically 30% of Tree Species within the Wild Endangered: Report

Nearly 30% of tree species in the wild are now critically endangered, with a variety of factors responsible for their decline, according to an analysis released Wednesday.

The report on the condition of the world’s trees, published by Botanic Gardens Conservation International, found that of the 58,497 registered tree species on the planet, 17,510 – or 29.9% – were threatened.

In addition, 4,099 are “potentially threatened” while at least 142 species are now extinct in the wild, according to the report.

The 29.9% figure does not believe that “data deficient” species or species that scientists do not have enough information about are threatened. If all species in this category were classified as endangered, the proportion threatened with extinction would rise to 51.3%.

“Assuming that species with a lack of data are just as likely to be threatened as any other tree species, we can estimate that 38.1% of tree species are classified as threatened,” the report said. Conversely, 41.5% of the species are not considered to be threatened.

“The main threats to tree species are deforestation and other forms of habitat loss, the direct exploitation of wood and other products, and the spread of invasive pests and diseases,” the report said. “Climate change also has clearly measurable effects.”

In addition to the latter, a statement by BGCI states that both climate change and extreme weather conditions represent “emerging threats to tree species worldwide”.

“If the world changes temperature and weather, many trees risk losing suitable habitats,” she added. “This affects species in both temperate and tropical habitats, with cloud forest tree species being particularly endangered in Central America.”

The report’s figures were based on data from various sources such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, scientific research and conservation assessments.

The threatened trees will be familiar to many and include oaks, magnolias and maples.

BGCI general secretary Paul Smith said the report was “a wake-up call to everyone in the world that trees need help”.

“Every species of tree is important – to millions of other tree-dependent species and to people around the world,” he said.

Trees are a crucial cog in the planet’s ecosystem. A report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations said forests “provide water, mitigate climate change and provide habitats for many pollinators that are essential for sustainable food production”. Elsewhere, the IUCN says forests absorb about 2.6 billion tons of carbon dioxide every year.

While the BGCI report is sobering read, the organization also listed a number of measures that could be taken to “protect and bring back threatened species”.

These include: conservation of threatened species in seed banks and collections in botanical gardens; Increasing the availability of corporate and government funding for threatened tree species; the expansion of tree-planting programs; and expansion of “protected area coverage for threatened tree species that are currently not well represented in protected areas”.

Among those commenting on Wednesday’s findings was Sara Oldfield, the co-chair of the Global Tree Specialist Group.

“Trees are vital to our future and for a healthy world we need the diversity of tree species,” said Oldfield, who also contributed to the BGCI report.

“Each tree species has a unique ecological role. As 30 percent of tree species worldwide are threatened with extinction, we urgently need to take protective measures.”

The WHO says it’s monitoring a brand new variant of Covid known as “mu”

The World Health Organization is monitoring a new variant of coronavirus called “mu” that the agency says has mutations that have the potential to bypass the immunity provided by a previous Covid-19 infection or vaccination.

Mu – also known by scientists as B.1.621 – was added to the WHO’s list of variants of “interest” on August 30, the international health organization said in its weekly epidemiological report on Covid published late Tuesday.

The variant contains genetic mutations that indicate natural immunity, current vaccines or monoclonal antibody treatments may not work as well against the new strain as against the original ancestral virus, the WHO said. The mu strain needs further research to confirm whether it will prove more contagious, more deadly, or more resistant to current vaccines and treatments.

Mu “has a constellation of mutations that indicate possible properties of immune escape,” the WHO wrote in its report on Tuesday.

“Preliminary data presented to the Virus Evolution Working Group show a reduction in the neutralization capacity of convalescent and vaccine sera similar to the beta variant, but this needs to be confirmed by further studies,” she added.

The agency monitors four “variants of concern,” including Delta, which was first discovered in India and is currently the most widespread variant in the US; Alpha, which was first discovered in the UK; Beta, first detected in South Africa, and the gamma variant, first detected in Brazil. These are generally defined as a mutant strain that is either more contagious, more lethal, or more resistant to current vaccines and treatments.

It also observes five so-called interesting variants – including the lambda variant first identified in Peru – that have caused outbreaks in several countries and that have genetic changes that could make them more dangerous than other strains.

Delta was an interesting variant until the WHO reclassified it in early May after preliminary studies found it could spread more easily than other versions of the virus. This variant has since been blamed for a number of major outbreaks around the world, including in the United States.

The new variant was first identified in Colombia, but has now been confirmed in at least 39 countries, according to the WHO. Although the global prevalence of the variant among sequenced cases has declined and is currently below 0.1%, its prevalence in Colombia and Ecuador has risen steadily, the agency warned.

WHO said more studies are needed to understand the clinical features of the new variant.

“The epidemiology of the mu variant in South America, particularly the joint spread of the delta variant, is being monitored for changes,” the agency said.
