NYSE

US stock futures rose Friday morning following the release of the better-than-expected June job report. All major street indices closed on Green Thursday as Wall Street got off to a positive start into the second half of 2021 after a strong first half. The S&P 500 rose 0.5% to 4,319.94, its sixth record high in a row. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 131 points, ending the session at 34,633.53. The 30-person Dow has risen three sessions in a row and is at its highest level since June 4th. The tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 0.13% to 14,522.38 on Thursday. The key averages are all positive for the week and at the level of their second consecutive weekly gain.

2. The US created 850,000 jobs in June

The number of employees outside the agricultural sector rose by 850,000 in June, the Ministry of Labor said on Friday. The number is better than the 706,000 jobs economists were expecting, Dow Jones estimates. However, the unemployment rate rose to 5.9%, while the projections forecast a decline to 5.6%. Average hourly wages rose 0.33% in June and 3.6% year-on-year; both numbers correspond to the estimates. The Department of Labor’s April and May employment reports fell short of Wall Street’s expectations as companies across all industries said they were having difficulty filling vacancies.

3. Robinhood applies for the highly anticipated IPO

In its highly anticipated IPO on Thursday, Robinhood Markets announced that it has 18 million retail clients and more than $ 80 billion in client assets. The free stock trading pioneer said it was profitable in 2020, posting net income of $ 7.45 million on net sales of $ 959 million as the number of accounts funded more than doubled that year. In 2019, Robinhood lost $ 107 million on net sales of $ 278 million.

Robinhood ended the first three months of this year in a loss of $ 1.4 billion, related to the emergency funding it closed during the peak of the Reddit-fueled GameStop madness in January. Revenue for the quarter rose 309% to $ 522 million, compared to $ 128 million in the first quarter of 2020. Approximately 38% of Robinhood’s revenue comes from options trading accounts. Stocks make up 25% of sales, while crypto makes up 17%.

Founded in 2013, the company plans to raise $ 100 million when it goes public. It intends to list on the Nasdaq and trade under the ticker “HOOD”.

4. Virgin Galactic plans to launch Richard Branson on July 11th

Space tourism company Virgin Galactic has scheduled its next test flight for July 11th and company founder Sir Richard Branson intends to be on board. The timing is particularly noteworthy as British billionaire Jeff Bezos plans to launch into space. The Amazon founder and richest person in the world is due to launch his own company Blue Origin on July 20th. Virgin Galactic’s shares rose about 30% in pre-trading hours to about $ 56 each. The planned launch will be Virgin Galactic’s fourth test space flight to date. Branson founded Virgin Galactic in 2004 and the company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in October 2019.

5. Toyota outperforms GM in the US for the first time in a quarter

Toyota Motor sold more vehicles in the US than General Motors in the second quarter. This is the first time the Japanese automaker has done this in a three-month period. On Thursday, Toyota said it had sold 688,813 vehicles in America from April to June, almost ousting GM’s 688,236 vehicles. Toyota’s results exceeded analysts’ expectations; GMs fell short. Toyota may become the best-selling automaker in the US, depending on where Ford’s results come in. GM’s Crosstown rival reported the number on Friday morning, and analysts are forecasting US sales of 645,000 vehicles in the second quarter. The last time GM wasn’t America’s best-selling automaker for a quarter was in the third quarter of 1998 when Ford oversold them, according to Edmunds.

The automotive industry has coped with semiconductor shortages and messed up production schedules at a time when consumer demand for new vehicles was strong. Toyota and other Japanese automakers have weathered the chip crisis better than their US rivals so far.

Correction: The Nasdaq closed at 14.522.38 on Thursday. In a previous version the number was incorrectly specified.

How one can paint outdated tiles as a result of they’re ugly and troublesome to interchange

Outdated tiles are a glaring eyesore that nobody wants. Maybe the tile hasn’t been changed since the 70s, or maybe it just isn’t your style. Sure, it is possible to reposition your home yourself, but not without extensive research and loads of accessories and equipment – including a wet saw for cutting tiles. This whole process can be overwhelming for a new do-it-yourselfer. You could also pay a professional to rip out and replace your old tile, but of course that comes at a price. But there is another option: freshen up the old with a simple coat of paint.

How to prepare old tiles for painting

In the best case scenario, your current tile is in perfect condition – it’s just out of date and needs to be reworked. In this case, no real preparation is required other than a good scrubbing. If you have nicks or scratches in the tile, you will need to fill, polish, and clean the tile. Such a job requires a spatula and some caulking.

Before filling the holes, make sure the tile is thoroughly cleaned and free of dirt, grime, or debris. Next, wipe the tile dry with a microfiber cloth. Once the tile is completely dry, take your putty and smooth it out in the cracks and holes. At the same time, wipe off the excess so that the tile surface is even. After the caulking dries, use a sander and sand the tiles so they are smooth.

Instructions for priming and painting tiles

After the tile cracks have been filled, smoothed and cleaned, you are ready to paint. There are two types of paint that adhere to hard surfaces. Latex or epoxy paint are best for painting concrete, bricks, and tiles. Latex paint is a less toxic option, but it is easily prone to wear and tear, especially in areas with lots of water (e.g. bathroom or kitchen splashbacks). Epoxy paint is available in a limited range of colors, but it can withstand moisture and moisture, making it a more durable option for your bathroom tile and floor. The Epoxy paint fumes are quite harshHowever, make sure you have adequate ventilation before you begin.

Before applying any paint, you need to apply a primer. The primer is a special mixture that helps the paint adhere to surfaces. Once the primer has dried, you’ll need to use a basecoat. The basecoat is the first coat of epoxy (or latex) of your choice. Some brands of colors offer a combination of primer and basecoat to minimize time and effort.

After the base coat dries, you’ll want to apply a top coat. The Top coat acts as a sealant for longer lasting paint color and durability. This is particularly important for tiles in high-traffic areas of the home, such as B. Toilets and bathrooms. Paint company Rustoleum recommends applying the topcoat at least six hours after the basecoat so that it is completely dry before rolling up the next coat. Let the paint dry for about 24 hours and then enjoy your newly updated space.

Beat the warmth by making a strawberry cachaça cooler

0

Illustration for the article Beat the Heat by Making a Strawberry Cachaça CoolerPhoto: Claire Lower

It’s hot outside … or at least it was. I can’t keep track of things. I’ll catch up with you: this week has done bad things to my brain. Starting the week at a scorching 115 and ending it at 75 broke me in a unique way. I never liked being hot, but now I fear the heat – but at least my garden made it.

That kind of heat – the unprecedented, scorching, alien heat of 115 degrees – isn’t the kind of heat that makes you have beach chair cocktails, but now that the “normal” heat is back, I think we are can start again. I originally wanted to start this long weekend with strawberry daiquiris shaken with homemade hood strawberry jam, but I’m out of rum so we’re using cachaça, which is sometimes called “Brazilian rum”, so checkmate, bar wagon!

And yes, I know I’ve written about a lot Jam cocktail, but this one is worth highlighting. The jam is sweet and has an intense strawberry flavor at the same time, and the cachaça makes it interesting – and all you have to do is shake it and strain it. Jam also tends to add a “breakfast vibe” to any drink it touches, so you can start drinking much earlier and not feel weird about it. To make this light pink cachaça cooler you will need:

  • 2 ounces cachaça
  • 3 tablespoons of strawberry jam
  • 1 ounce lime juice

Combine everything in the shaker with ice and shake until the shaker gets too cold to hold. Strain through a fine sieve into a coupe glass and stir the jam in the sieve with a spoon so that it does not clog. Drink in the sun while you’re still getting on well with the thing, or sip in the shade or indoors or in a cool basement.

Boeing cargo airplane makes an emergency touchdown close to Honolulu

A Boeing 737-200 cargo plane made an emergency landing in the ocean near Honolulu early Friday after pilots reported engine problems, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Both pilots were rescued from a field of rubble, said the US Coast Guard.

The FAA said Transair Flight 810 made the forced landing around 1:30 a.m. local time on Friday.

“The pilots had reported engine problems and were trying to return to Honolulu when they were forced to land the plane in the water,” the FAA said. “The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate this.”

The Boeing aircraft was built in 1975 and, according to the FAA, was powered by two Pratt & Whitney engines. The plane was not a 737 Max, the jet that officials had on the ground for 20 months up until last November after two fatal crashes.

The plane took off from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu to Kahului Airport on Maui, the US Coast Guard said.

“Our situation: We have lost the number 1 engine and are coming straight to the airport,” one of the pilots told an air traffic controller, according to the audio from the airport tower, which was published on the LiveATC.net website. The pilot said the plane had about two hours of fuel. “We need the fire department.”

“There is a possibility that we will lose the other engine,” said the pilot. “It’s getting very hot.”

The air traffic controller said shortly after: “Low Altitude Alert. Low Altitude Alert. Are you even able to climb?”

“No. Negative,” said another pilot.

The first pilot asked the air traffic controller to “inform the coast guard”.

The Coast Guard said it responded to a report of a crashed plane south of Oahu around 1:40 p.m. and that both people on board were rescued with the help of the Honolulu Fire Department.

A rescue helicopter located the white and orange Transair aircraft around 2:30 a.m. in a field of rubble

A survivor seen at the tail of the plane was carried out of the water by the rescue helicopter and flown to a hospital in Honolulu, according to a Coast Guard report. The other person was on floating packages and was brought ashore by a Honolulu Fire Department lifeboat, it said.

Transair, a Hawaiian cargo airline specializing in inter-island cargo flights, has not responded to requests for comments. The airline has been operating since 1982, according to its website.

“We are aware of the reports from Honolulu, Hawaii, and are closely monitoring the situation,” said Boeing. “We are in contact with the US National Transportation Safety Board and are working to gather more information.”

The NTSB said it was sending 10 investigators to the crash site.

Freight planes are often decades old and have been converted to cargo after years of passenger transport.

Boeing shares made up for some of the losses incurred after news of the crash, but fell 1.3% to $ 236.68.

Why you should not belief the numbers on weight machines

0

Why can you do 250 pounds on the leg press at your usual gym but only 200 pounds when you go somewhere else in town? You didn’t suddenly get weaker, and contrary to popular myth, it’s not because the gym was lying to flatter you. Machines are just different.

Machine design is important

Let’s take the leg press as an example, as almost every gym has one. This is the machine that you have some sort of seat and platform for your feet on. You push with your legs to either move the platform while the seat stays in place, or vice versa.

There are many different ways to build this type of machine. Some are vertical, with your feet just above your hips. Some are horizontal. For some, the seat slides up a ramp, pulling weights on a stack. Each of these is a completely different machine, and it should come as no surprise that the one with a slope and weight stack is calibrated differently than the one where your feet are over you and you load weight plates on it.

Think back to Elementary school physics for a minute. When a machine has a lever arm, like a shoulder press, the length of the arm changes the degree of mechanical advantage (or disadvantage) you have in lifting the weight. The number of pulleys and cables in a cable machine can also change the force required to move the weight stack. When weights move on an angled path, the steepness of the angle affects how easily the weights move.

G / O Media can receive a commission

And even when you compare two apparently identical machines, there can be subtle differences. One might be better lubricated than the other so that its parts can slide more easily. They cannot be exactly the same either; Perhaps the manufacturer moved a pulley to a different location between the 2018 and 2019 models. You have the idea.

By the way, machines are not to be equated with dumbbells. Just because you can squeeze X pounds on your legs doesn’t mean you can put a barbell on your back and do the same amount of squats.

So are the numbers meaningless?

Not at all. Only the numbers matter on this machine. If one of the plates in the stack says 50 and the next plate below it says 55, then you know that you are stronger if you can repeat the 55 than if you could just do the pin at 50.

When visiting a new gym, go by feel. If you could do eight reps on the 55 pin at your old gym, find a weight that could do eight reps on the new machine. It doesn’t matter what number is on that weight or how much the stack of weights would weigh if you could pull it out of the machine and place it on a scale.

Think of it like game currency: you wouldn’t waste time Googling how many Monopoly Dollars are equal to how many are equal Robuxbecause there is no reason for either of them to ever measure each other meaningfully. Everyone is useful in their own world and nowhere else.

So yeah, be sure to put these numbers in yours Training diary. They help you track your progress. But don’t expect them to be the same on another machine across town.

James Charles returns to YouTube after months of “self-reflection”

“I’m so, so sorry to let you down and let you down,” continued Charles. “As scary as it is to think about it, I’ve also resigned myself to the fact that this isn’t just something I can move on from. I am aware of that no matter what I say in this video, say or 10 videos down the line or a year of videos down the line, those stories and allegations are going to haunt me for the rest of my life and the rest of my career and that sucks. “

He pondered, “It’s so horrific and embarrassing, but at the end of the day it’s my own fault and responsibility to take responsibility for what I’ve done.”

In February, Charles denied having “cared for” a minor on Snapchat. At the time, a 16-year-old said the YouTuber asked for pictures of her “body”.

In a statement, Charles replied, “The accusation that I nursed this person is completely false.” According to Charles, they added themselves on Snapchat and the victim claimed to be 18 so Charles started “flirting”. After learning the teenager was 16 years old, Charles told them he was “uncomfortable” with the situation, according to the vlogger.

The producer of Instant Influencer praised in his statement: “Because of situations like this, I am now going to ask to see everyone’s ID or passport instead of trusting someone’s word for it [person] I have a conversation with. ”

In April he released his video “Holding Myself Accountable” and then parted ways with his long-time beauty sponsor Morphe. “In light of the recent allegations against James Charles, Morphe and James have agreed to end our relationship,” the brand said in a statement. “It is and always has been Morphe’s goal to create a positive, safe, and empowering space where all beauty lovers can freely share their artistry and passion for cosmetics, and Morphe is committed to promoting that goal.”

Ultimately, Charles said in his new video, “All I can do is learn from this situation and figure out how to better protect myself and move forward more cautiously, and I promise I will do exactly what I will do . ”

CRISPR gene enhancing may attain sufferers “very quickly”: Intellia CEO

0

After a groundbreaking study in which the gene-editing technology CRISPR completed its first systematic delivery as medicine to the human body, John Leonard, CEO of Intellia Therapeutics, hopes that gene therapy will be “very, very soon” to patients Could be provided.

“These approaches are subjected to the usual clinical trials under which any drug or gene therapy would be examined, so we are in the early stages,” Leonard said Thursday afternoon at CNBC’s Closing Bell.

He added that the company expects medical devices to undergo standard testing in the next few years, “but we hope it will be available to patients very, very soon.”

CRISPR, or clustered, regularly spaced short palindromic repeats, cuts genomes and cuts DNA effectively to treat genetic diseases.

The latest development, the result of a study between Intellia and biotech company Regeneron, treats a rare disease after it has been given as an IV infusion. Previously, other uses of CRISPR technology have been limited to ex vivo therapy, or where cells are removed from the body for genetic manipulation in a laboratory and then returned to the body.

“What’s special about it is that we were able to completely inactivate this gene and see this in the clinical impact of the patient, which is a huge step forward in gene editing,” said Leonard.

Effects on the heart, diabetes and general illnesses

CRISPR has wide uses, and Leonard said a lot of work is being done to tackle some of the most common diseases and causes of death, such as heart disease and diabetes.

“The challenge is getting into those specific genes that cause disease, so we started in the liver, an area where there are a lot of problems with disease-causing genes, and we have been shown to be very, very successful at doing this reachable.” said Leonard. “After that, there are other tissues that we are tracking, particularly the bone marrow, where a long list of blood-borne diseases can be treated.”

One key for CRISPR is targeting diseases that are monogenic or caused by a specific gene, which enables this type of gene-editing therapy to be successful, Leonard said. Other polygenic diseases like cancer or autoimmune diseases are “more difficult to fight,” he added.

A researcher observes the CRISPR / Cas9 process through a stereo microscope at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine.

The new treatment is still in its early stages and no price has been set, but as it develops Leonard believes it will be “very valuable to patients and likely resource-efficient for the health system as a whole”.

“It really comes down to some of the benefits of a one-time dose, which is literally a one-time therapy,” said Leonard. “We anticipate that over time this will generally be very, very beneficial to the economics of this entire area.”

Jennifer Doudna, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2020 for her work on CRISPR gene editing and is a co-founder of Intellia, recently told the CNBC Evolve Global Summit that cost is a significant challenge in the case of sickle cell anemia, where CRISPR Was successful early on, treatment can still be $ 2 million.

“That is clearly not a price point that makes this available to most of the people who can benefit from it,” she said. Innovations in the delivery of CRISPR can help cut costs, but Doudna also said medicine needs to figure out how “to scale molecule production so that we can cut costs”.

She told CNBC that as the technology evolved from the publication of her early work to clinical studies showing it was effective in treating disease in less than 10 years, “one of the fastest advances of technology from the basic one.” , initial science to a specific application. “

“This is mainly because the technology comes at a time when there is a huge demand for genome editing and a great deal of knowledge about genomes,” said Doudna.

How Films Can Assist If Your Canine Is Afraid of Fireworks

0

Every July 4th, when fireworks explode in the night sky, millions of dogs run for cover or bark and howl in confusion at the sounds that attack their delicate dog ears. Fireworks are terrifying and confusing for dogs who don’t know that the cacophony outside is celebrating “freedom” and is not threatening their hearth or home.

Since your dog is just a helpless bystander here, do him a great service by preparing him for the trauma of the fireworks season. There are many methods you can consider to manage your stress levels – from equip them with a weighted “thunder shirt” to put them on anti-anxiety medication– but the simplest one could be some form of exposure therapy.

In the days (and weeks if you have the time) before Fourth, make it a point to make a loud, explosive movie when it gets dark. As your dog gets used to hearing cinematic explosions (or some other similarly bombastic soundtrack, such as YouTube video of a fireworks show) before chaos ensues, hopefully they will get through the vacation without mistaking the noise for the collapse of civilization.

Why are dogs so afraid of fireworks?

Your dog is not a hypochondriac. Just as their sense of smell is not like yours, their hearing is far superior – and more sensitive. Dogs can hear decibels so high that humans cannot hear them, and sounds that are so quiet that humans cannot hear them. It makes sense that super loud noises with no visible source would scare them as a result – but that doesn’t fully explain why dogs are so triggered by a fireworks explosion.

A variety of them are more likely to help make your dog shiver when the festivities begin. “It can be the smell; it can be the noise and the flashes of light, ”veterinarian Judy Morgan said the American Kenel Club. Some dogs may have traumatic associations with loud noises in general. Smithsonian magazine details How a dog might learn to associate the loud noises of a construction crew with abandonment:

For example, if a construction worker hammered on the wall in a neighboring apartment while a puppy was home alone, that puppy might associate beating with abandonment – without its owner knowing about it.

G / O Media can receive a commission

Still, dogs are generally afraid of the tumult of fireworks, regardless of their particular life experience. One Study from 2019 found 52% of the surveyed dog owners stated that their pet was affected by fireworks noise, with “almost a third of the dogs being given the highest possible severity”.

The range of behaviors for dogs that panic during fireworks is wide, but they are all bad. Jennifer Green, Veterinary Director, Camden University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Australia, said Phys.Org What behaviors a dog owner might expect from a frightened puppy on July 4th or even during a severe thunderstorm:

These include panting, up and down, moaning, drooling, hiding and destroying things around the house. They are often so scared that they try to escape. Many dogs go missing in storms or fireworks.

Taking steps to prepare your pup for the trauma to come can go a long way in calming his or her nerves.

So play a loud movie or white noise before the show

You can get your dog used to the racquet outside by making a smaller racquet in your house. Indeed, one option is to find a noisy movie – perhaps one with lots of special effects and explosions – that plays regularly before the celebratory explosives detonate. The aim is to desensitize your dog to the noise outside and reassure him that he has nothing to fear – or to confuse him so that he cannot distinguish between the outside noise and what is coming from your television. You can also combine the loud soundtrack with one of your dog’s favorite treats to create a pleasant association.

Jenn Stanley, a canine behavioral consultant, explained how to do this with the American Kennel Club:

The volume should be low enough for your dog to hear it, but not showing any signs of stress such as wheezing, walking back and forth, leaving the area, or trying to hide. We call this keeping the dog “under the threshold” and it enables learning. If the dog is overwhelmed, it will try to escape the situation and will not be nearly as capable of learning that it is not a threat.

Remember, the goal is to normalize the sound of fireworks to the point where your dog will find the pops and bangs harmless. Which will pay off as the fireworks season usually goes well beyond July 4th.
