China’s debt has grown dramatically over the past decade and is one of the greatest economic challenges facing the ruling Communist Party of China, which turns 100 this week.

Identifying the skyrocketing mountain of debt as a potential threat to economic stability, Beijing has attempted in recent years to reduce the country’s reliance on debt for growth. But that deleveraging stalled for much of last year due to Covid-19.

Last year’s pandemic hit China’s economic growth and prompted authorities to make it easier for companies to borrow. As a result, China’s debt – measured by the size of its economy – rose to record levels in 2020.

Here’s a look at China’s rising debt over the years and its impact on economic growth.

Record debt

In the wake of the global financial crisis of 2007 and 2008, China quickly piled up debt as authorities handed out a massive stimulus package, largely funded by bank loans.

The country’s debt level stabilized over several years before accelerating again in the third quarter of last year, reaching an all-time high of nearly 290% of GDP, data from the Bank for International Settlements showed.

However, China isn’t the only country to see a surge in debt in 2020.

Other major economies such as the US, Japan and Europe also saw debt ratios rise, BIS data showed. It did so as governments around the world increased spending to help businesses and households cope with the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Breakdown of China’s Debt

But the composition of China’s debt is different from that of the United States and Japan.

According to BIS data, the corporate sector in China accounted for a large part of total debt, accounting for more than 160% of GDP. Meanwhile, national debt made up the largest proportion of total debt in both the US and Japan, the data showed.

As its economy recovered from the pandemic, China has been renewing its multi-year debt containment efforts in recent months – after pausing much of last year.

These efforts have shown some results. China’s outstanding total social finance, a broad measure of credit and liquidity in the economy, rose 11% year over year at the end of May – after growing 11.7% in the previous month.

Economists at British bank Barclays predict that credit growth in China will be between 10% and 10.5% by the end of this year, compared to 13.3% by the end of 2020.

China’s economic rise

A debt-driven economic boom in the wake of the global financial crisis helped China overtake Japan as the world’s second largest economy in nominal terms in 2010. China has remained in this position since then, followed by the US

How To Make Your Personal Hummingbird Meals (And Why You Ought to)

The hummingbird feeder I hung on the porch is one of my unexpected joys in life. I originally hung it up because hummingbirds kept dropping in on a certain spot – I’m convinced the previous owners of my house hung a food dispenser there – and popping up every summer demanding that I feed them. So I do.

In addition to the automatic feeders, the garden shop sells bottles of hummingbird food, both clear and red. (Red flowers are known to attract hummingbirds.) But you don’t need either type. It’s easier, cheaper, and better for the birds to make their own.

Even the Audubon Society recommends a homemade syrup instead of the bottled goods, and they also point out that the red coloring is not necessary. It has been speculated that red dye can be bad for hummingbirds, and in any case, it has not been specifically tested for long-term effects on hummingbirds.

People must have tried making hummingbird food out of all sorts of other substances because the Audubon side advises against making it with honey, molasses, or artificial sweeteners. Just sugar water. So, okay, let’s make some sugar water.

How to do it:

  1. Add 1/4 cup of sugar to a pint-sized mason jar or similar container.
  2. Add 1 cup of cold water or room temperature water.
  3. Unscrew the lid and shake.

That’s it – no need to heat it or add any other ingredients. The sugar will dissolve by gently shaking or stirring. (If you are familiar with make simple syrupwhich uses more sugar compared to water and needs a little more help to dissolve everything.)

Once I’ve made the syrup, I bring the hummingbird feeder in and wash it with hot water. Then I pour in about half the serving – that’s about half a cup of liquid – and put the rest in the fridge for later in the week. Make sure to wash and refill the feeder twice a week to keep your little friends healthy.

How one can learn ebooks totally free with out copying them

Getting your hands on a good book to read is as easy as clicking “Borrow” on your tablet. If you are slow to enter the world of e-books, you should know that you can download thousands of e-books and their audio counterparts for free from your phone, computer or tablet. This is a quick and easy way to borrow an e-book from your local public library.

How to access an e-library

Depending on where you live, your library may already have a large collection of e-books. For example, the New York Public Library (NYPL) allows New York residents to sign up for a digital library card and try out available titles. You can register online, create a username (usually your email address or membership number) and enter a password. You will then have access to your e-book library via the app Easy E.. Other library systems across the country may have similar programs; Please visit your local library website for more information.

If a digital library card in your area is out of the question, literary website Goodreads also published a short list of e-readers that are great for e-lending in the United States and Canada. Libby’s online reader app makes e-lending easy and links to your e-reader, Kindle or your Kindle app. The Company OverDrive creates Libby to connect public libraries to readers for easy online borrowing; about 90% of the libraries are supposedly connected to OverDrive and Libby, but you can check their website for participating libraries to make sure this resource is available in your area.

How to borrow e-books through Libby

You need a library card to work with Libby. You can either use your existing card information or visit your local library to get a new card. Once you have the card, download the Libby app and follow the simple setup instructions. The app asks you if you have a library card. If you select No, you will be given directions to get a new map in your area. If you select “Yes”, the app asks whether you know your local branch or whether you would like to “guess your branch”. (The app uses your current location to find the nearest branch of the library.) After confirming your branch, you can start borrowing immediately.

This is how you link your e-reader to your borrowed e-books

When you have sufficiently searched through and found the desired book (or audiobook) via Libby, select “Borrow” below. The app takes you to the checkout page, where you can select a loan period of seven days, 14 days or 21 days (depending on the library).

After you set the loan period, Libby will prompt you to update the notification settings. You can receive notifications when the loan period expires and be notified when books that you have put on hold are now available. You can also choose to be notified when your favorite author has a new title or when the next part in a series you like is available. This feature allows you to keep track of how long you have left to finish your current book and what to check out next. After the loan period expires, the book will no longer be available on your account or device.

Now that you are ready to read, all of your other e-books can access the book in your Kindle library. When you click the title, you’ll see the option to read it on Kindle or an e-reader. If you select Kindle, you will be redirected to sign in to your Amazon Kindle account. Once you’re signed in, the Kindle app will prompt you to send the book to your device. You have the option to choose which of your Kindle devices to use. When you open your e-library on your tablet, Kindle, or iPad, all of your books are in the same place for easy reading.

“Sturdy” immune response noticed in a “combine and match” covid vaccine examine

LONDON – The mixing and matching of coronavirus vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and AstraZeneca-Oxford creates a “robust” immune response against the virus, according to a study led by Oxford University.

Researchers who conducted the Com-COV study – which looked at the feasibility of using a different vaccine for the first “primary” vaccine than the “booster” vaccine – discovered that alternating doses of the two vaccines produced strong immunity.

However, the study found that immune responses differed depending on the sequence of vaccinations, with Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccination followed by Pfizer BioNTech vaccination producing the better immune response from the two mixed vaccination schedules.

The doses of the vaccines were given four weeks apart with dates for an upcoming 12-week dosing interval, the researchers said after posting their latest results on the Lancet preprint server Monday.

“Both ‘mixed’ schemes (Pfizer-BioNTech followed by Oxford-AstraZeneca and Oxford-AstraZeneca followed by Pfizer-BioNTech) induced high levels of antibodies to the SARS-CoV2 spike IgG protein when the doses were four weeks apart were administered, ”the researchers noted.

“This means that all possible vaccination plans with the Oxford-AstraZeneca and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines could potentially be used against Covid-19.”

The results could give much-needed flexibility to vaccination programs around the world, according to Matthew Snape, associate professor of pediatrics and vaccinology at Oxford University and lead investigator on the study.

“The Com-COV study evaluated ‘mix-and-match’ combinations of the Oxford and Pfizer vaccines to see the extent to which these vaccines could be used interchangeably, potentially allowing flexibility in the UK and the introduction of vaccines around the world . “

“The results show that both mixed regimens, when administered four weeks apart, induce an immune response in excess of the threshold set by the standard Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccine regimen.”

The researchers found that both mixed regimens induced higher levels of antibodies than the “standard” regimen with two doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca. It is currently recommended that the two doses required for the AstraZeneca vaccine be given eight to twelve weeks apart. Previous clinical studies found that the longer gap between doses increased the effectiveness of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine against symptomatic Covid-19 infection to 82.4%.

The highest antibody response in the new study was observed on the Pfizer-BioNTech scheme with two doses, and the highest T-cell response was from an Oxford-AstraZeneca shot, followed by Pfizer-BioNTech, the researchers found, without further ado To give details.

The Covid vaccines currently approved in the UK and US stimulate our immune system to make antibodies to protect us from infection. Antibodies are produced by specialized white blood cells called B lymphocytes or B cells. T cells, on the other hand, are a second type of white blood cell that also play an important role in our immune system; T cells can attack cells that have been infected with a pathogen or virus such as Covid, and B cells can help produce antibodies.

“These results are an invaluable guide to using mixed dosing schedules, but the four week interval studied here is shorter than the eight to twelve week schedule most commonly used for the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine for improved immune response, and the results for one 12 week intervals will be available shortly, “added Snape.

The UK vaccination program has so far been praised for its speed and agility. The UK has approved and deployed vaccines quickly and is now offering all over 18s their first vaccinations while the rest of the people get their second dose. So far, 84.1% of UK adults have received a first dose and 61.6% two doses of a Covid vaccine, government data shows.

Given the UK’s easy access to Covid vaccines (it has ordered 397 million vaccine doses from six different vaccine developers) there are currently no plans to change the schedule of doses being offered to people, England’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer Professor Jonathan Van-Tam said. into the release.

“Our unmixed (homologous) vaccination program has already saved tens of thousands of lives across the UK, but we now know that mixed doses could give us even more flexibility for a refresher program while supporting countries that need to go further and possibly further vaccine rollouts Have delivery problems, “he said.

In May, researchers reported preliminary Com-COV data showing more frequent mild to moderate responses to mixed regimens compared to standard regimens, but these were short-lived.

The University of Oxford is leading the Com-COV study conducted by the National Immunization Schedule Evaluation Consortium and backed by the Vaccines Task Force with £ 7 million ($ 9.7 million) in government funding.

Nikki Bella apologizes for controversial touch upon wrestler Chyna

Right them wrong.

Nikki Bella apologized on June 28 for earlier comments on E! s Fashion Police surrounding the late wrestler Chyna. During a 2013 episode of Fashion Police, Nikki and Sister Brie Bella joked about Chyna’s “butch” traits. “We don’t know if it’s a man or a woman,” Nikki said as she held up a photo of the WWE colleague.

The clip reappeared on Twitter on June 26th. Nikki responded with a public apology tweet saying she wanted to “sincerely apologize” for her insensitive remark.

“I’m sorry and embarrassed that my 29-year-old self insulted Chyna and in turn hurt her family and others,” wrote Nikki. “I wish I could take it back.”

The mother of one also insisted that her past actions were a life lesson to fans: “Please learn from me, it’s not worth hurting someone’s feelings for meaningless laughter.”

Find out how to flip off Alexa’s ‘By the Means’ function

While I appreciate anything a smart speaker assistant can help me with, I don’t want to get caught up in long conversations with Alexa. I certainly don’t need her to respond out loud to every request or make suggestions on completely different topics just for asking her to turn off the lights.

Fortunately, there are a few settings you can change on your Amazon Echo to limit the verbosity from Alexa – although you probably can’t rule out unwanted responses entirely. Here are the options to get Alexa to speak less.

How to activate the ‘short mode’ on Alexa

Letter fashion eliminates verbal affirmations like “OK” when you make a request. Instead you will hear a short tone. To enable this setting, open your Alexa app and tap the More Menu. click Settings> Voice responses> Short mode to switch on and off.

You can find that too admittedly creepy whisper mode setting Here. When you turn this on and whisper your questions or commands – let’s say you’re trying not to wake a sleeping person – Alexa whispers back in an unsettling but quiet way.

How to disable purchase suggestions on Alexa

Alexa is also known to follow up simple queries (like asking for a weather report) with suggestions to buy things from Amazon – basically ads. Turns out there is also an attitude for that: Go to in your app Settings> Notifications> Amazon Shopping and deselect the option “Receive personalized recommendations and offers based on your shopping activity”.

How to turn off the Try it out option

Another quirk of Alexa is her fondness for saying “By the way …” as a preface to the loosely related information she is about to share. Apparently, There isn’t a single setting to turn this off, but you can turn off things to try, which can help cut down some of their chatter. Go to Settings> Notifications> Things to Try and turn off.

How to turn off Alexa ‘ancestors’

When you use Alexa to control smart home devices like lights and thermostats, the Hunches feature (enabled by default) will warn you if something isn’t working as expected. You can find options for this in Settings> Warnings> Settings> Suggestions. You can also turn on Alexa Take care of these issues automatically.

How to set up an Amazon Kids user profile

The most extreme option for turning off unwanted notifications is to use your Amazon Echo with a child account (h / t CNET). The downside is that some other functions are limited – although Alexa can still respond to basic requests, play (not explicit) music, and control your smart home devices.

To turn your Echo into a kid-friendly device, go to equipment In the Alexa app, tap Echo & Alexa and select the device that you want to reconfigure. Tap Amazon children, turn on the bar, and select Set up Amazon Kids. If you’ve already set up a child profile, you can choose it. If not, choose Add child and follow the instructions.

Richter rejects FTC antitrust criticism in opposition to Fb

0

A federal court on Monday dismissed the Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust complaint against Facebook, a severe blow to the agency’s complaint, which could have resulted in Facebook selling Instagram and WhatsApp.

Facebook’s shares rose more than 3% on Monday after the complaint was dismissed, bringing the social media company’s market cap to above $ 1 trillion for the first time.

“While the court here does not agree with all of Facebook’s allegations, it ultimately agrees that the agency’s lawsuit is legally inadequate and must therefore be dismissed,” the US District Court file for the District of Columbia said. “The FTC has failed to provide enough facts to plausibly support a necessary element of all of its Section 2 claims – that Facebook has monopoly power in the Personal Social Networking (PSN) service market.”

In the complaint, the court found that the FTC had failed to prove that Facebook maintained a monopoly.

“The Court agrees that the first – having monopoly power in the market for personal social networking services (as defined by the Agency) – is not adequately relied on here,” the file reads. “It does not take more to conclude that the lawsuit must be dismissed.”

The court also disagreed with Facebook’s argument that the FTC has no authority to attack the Instagram and WhatsApp acquisitions that took place in 2012 and 2014. On the contrary, it ruled that the FTC can still move to dispose of these acquisitions – but only if it succeeds in its legal arguments over Facebook’s monopoly power.

The court found that the FTC did not provide enough detailed data to prove that Facebook has market power in the loosely defined market for personal social networking services.

“The lawsuit undoubtedly relates to specific assertions of fact relating to consumer switching preferences,” the court wrote. “These claims – which at no point in the past decade provide an estimated actual number or range for Facebook’s market share – are ultimately implausible to plausibly demonstrate Facebook’s market power.”

The filing noted that the FTC’s complaint lacked specific evidence.

“The FTC’s complaint says almost nothing concrete about the key question of how much power Facebook actually had and still has in a properly defined antitrust product market,” the files say. “It’s almost like the agency would expect the court to simply nod at the traditional notion that Facebook is a monopoly.”

The verdict is not necessarily the end of the process. The court acknowledged that the FTC may be able to address the weaknesses in its reasoning and left open the option to file an amended lawsuit and proceed with the lawsuit.

Your smoked greens are determined for some fats

We live in a kind of golden age of counterfeit meat products. Meat-free foods shaped like meat have flooded the market, making it easier than ever to find Soyrizo at the grocery store or an Impossible burger at Burger King. These products offer vegetarians and vegans something that is easy to grill while grilling, but that doesn’t mean we should be cutting out vegetables altogether.

Relying heavily on these mass-produced meat substitutes is not going to “save the environment” no matter what the counterfeit meat food giants might tell you – check out Alicia Kennedy’s op-ed for In these times on the green washing trend – but more importantly: vegetables are good and taste like meat or eggs if they are prepared correctly, but not as good if they are prepared without care.

You have to add fat to the vegetable – like you already have in a piece of animal protein – to make it so delicious.

The words “carrot dog” may frenzy your average BBQ dad, but a smoked, grilled carrot done with some fat is not just a whimsical hot dog substitute, it’s an intensely flavorful way to enjoy a carrot . (I love a grilled carrot and I love the mood, so the term “carrot dog” doesn’t bother me. I draw the line with “Bread steak, “however.)

And while a given Michelin-starred restaurant tons of creeping press for removing meat, fish and dairy products from the menu, Chef Amanda Cohen has been cooking and serving vegetables in her restaurant Dirt Candy in an incredibly creative and delicious way since 2008. Her broccoli dog is one of her most famous dishes, but other vegetables (like the carrot, beetroot, and mushroom) have also received the dog treat, as well as the pastrami treat and the downright fine mousse treat.

In short – Chef Cohen thinks much longer and harder about vegetarian dogs (and vegetables in general) than I do, which is why I asked about her to see if she had any tips on making smoked vegetables, be it carrots, broccoli or Cabbage taste fantastic. (Spoiler: It depends on the fat and the surface.)

A smoked carrot may take a few more steps than pork chops, but they’re simple steps that even a novice can cook at home

“The thing about smoking a vegetable versus smoking a piece of animal protein is that vegetables don’t have their own source of fat,” Chef Cohen told me via email. “When you smoke animal protein, it absorbs the smoke and mixes it with the fat, and you get this really delicious, intoxicating product. When you smoke a vegetable, it is not porous. It won’t soak in the smoke. And the smoke itself basically only sticks to the outside. You want a large surface area so you can get the flavor in as many places as possible. But you also need to finish cooking it in a fat. You have to add fat to the vegetables – like you already have in a piece of animal protein – to make them delicious. “

A smoked carrot may take a few more steps than pork chops, but they’re simple steps that even a novice can cook at home. Cohen’s Nashville Hot Carrot Dogs are cooked using a variety of methods to achieve the delicious effect you want.

“We just cook them to make them a little soft and easier to shape,” she explained. “It’s no fun eating a carrot dog in a bun if it has a pointy end. We want the whole thing to be the same size and to have to be able to shape it. And we know from what we do with it that when it is smoked it doesn’t cook enough and that it has to cook too long as a whole carrot. So I have to start this process and move it forward. So we cook it so it’s just tender enough to shape and then we smoke it and then we dip it in batter and deep fry it and we finish it with the hot oil because it’s a Nashville Hot Carrot Dog is. “

If smoking and deep-frying sounds a little too labor-intensive for a barbecue in the garden, don’t worry. Cohens Broccoli Dog Recipe is slightly more accessible to the average home cook, but you can apply these principles to all of your vegetarian grilling and smoking activities as well.

Cut large vegetables into pieces to add surface area, cook more robust products like carrots, and develop flavors through a variety of cooking methods such as: And – perhaps most importantly – always finish your veggies with some fat by sautéing, dipping, or drizzling with butter or some other aromatic oil. It might not be as easy as throwing an Impossible burger on the grill, but if you think of veggies and cook them that way, you’ll become a better cook regardless of your diet.

It’s worth noting, however, that Chef Cohen isn’t against the occasional Impossible or Beyond product, especially if it leads them down a veggie-heavy path. “They eat less meat because they try these different types of products, which hopefully takes on the dark side of eating more vegetables, which is what I care about.”

Amber Tamblyn displays the ache of showbiz mother and father in Britney Op-Ed

Up to a degree Amber Tamblyn understand what Britney Spears had to face. After all, Tamblyn was also a female child star who was run by her parents.

In a newly published commentary for the New York Times, the actress, who rose to fame first in General Hospital and then in Joan of Arcadia and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, reflected on what it was like to have her mother and father in charge their career and the resulting dynamic.

“My money paid for our vacations, dinners and sometimes even the bills,” she said. “When the time finally came to unravel our personal and professional relationships, it was deeply painful for all three of us.”

Although it’s unclear when that date officially came, Tamblyn revealed that her parents managed much of her professional life until she got engaged to her husband David cross. She was 28 years old at the time.

While Tamblyn introduced that her parents were “supportive and ethical in all respects” and described her father as a “keenly protective advocate,” the dynamic had still taken its toll.

“Having my parents on the payroll has hurt our relationship, whether we understand it or not,” she wrote. “I couldn’t get rid of the feeling that every time I talked to my parents about money, I felt like asking for an allowance – only the allowance came from money I earned.”

Cash losers flood the market with new shares

Money-losing companies flood the market with new stocks – and risk-hungry investors buy them.

About 1,000 in the last 12 months Companies issued secondary or add-on stocks in the U.S. and nearly 750 of them made no profits, according to SentimenTrader’s Jason Goepfert, citing Bloomberg data.

The change has taken place since the financial crisis. Previously, with the exception of the dot-com bubble in the late 1990s, there were more profitable companies raising money in the secondary market than those losing money.

What drove the change was the public market itself. Wall Street became more tolerant of negative earnings and instead focused on the growth prospects. The number of unprofitable money-raising firms began to grow until they eventually outnumbered the profitable ones. Then the gap got bigger and bigger.

Still, the profitable firms – usually larger and more established companies – could raise more money than their unprofitable counterparts. However, that void has narrowed, and the unprofitable took power last year.

The money losers have raised $ 27 billion more than the money makers since last June – something that has not been seen in at least 40 years and even exceeded the gap during the dot-com bubble.

That’s only a tiny amount compared to the entire US stock market, but still worth a mention. “It’s not about the amount of emissions,” wrote Goepfert, “but about a market environment that allows this.”

For more than six months, the market has been in what Goepfert calls the “enthusiasm phase” of a sentiment cycle. The characteristics of this phase include high optimism, low creditworthiness, a rush of first and second placements, outperformance of risky stocks and exaggerated valuations.

“We have to look out for internal divergences and warnings in the technical indicators during and after these phases,” wrote Goepfert.

The frenzied activity of issuing and buying shares supports the lifeline of many companies that would otherwise have perished long ago.
