Ellen Pompeo reacts to Gray’s fan, who calls final season “Trash”

0

Ellen Pompeo is surprisingly open to all kinds of feedback from Grey’s Anatomy fans as the long-running medical drama enters its 18th season.

The 51-year-old actress tweeted her reaction after a fan of the show criticized the recently completed 17 season as a “dumpster” [fire emoji] Trash! “The fan commented,” I love the show, but not this season. “

On Friday, June 18, Ellen posted a rather magnanimous message in response. “All good! We can’t always please everyone for seventeen seasons,” wrote the star. “It’s definitely not easy to keep it going and keeping it great … I get it … thanks for looking anyway … and thanks for your feedback, it matters … [prayer-hands and kiss emoji]. “

But Ellen wasn’t done weighing the fan’s judgment. When another user praised Ellen for ending the review, the actress made it clear that the first comment didn’t really bother her.

“No, honestly, no shadow at all … the only show I stayed on to the end was The Sopranos,” wrote Ellen.

US officers urge extra Covid vaccinations because the Delta variant will increase

Federal health officials continue to urge more Americans to get vaccinated as the Delta variant accounts for a larger proportion of new cases in the United States.

“You need to get vaccinated to be protected from Covid-19, the Delta variant and any other variant that might come on the way,” said Jeffrey Zients, White House coordinator of the coronavirus response, Thursday.

The variant, first discovered by scientists in India, has now spread to more than 80 countries and accounts for more than 10% of new cases in the US, up from 6% last week.

“If you are vaccinated, you are protected, and if not, the threat of variants is real and growing,” said US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy in the briefing on Thursday after explaining that the Delta variant “is significantly more transferable and can be more dangerous than previous variants.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently identified the Delta variant as a variant of concern “based on increasing evidence that the Delta variant spreads more easily and compared to other variants, including B.1.1.7 (Alpha) causing more severe cases. “

New cases and deaths are falling dramatically in the United States thanks to generally successful vaccination campaigns in many states. Some parts of the country are still seeing spikes in cases and hospital admissions.

“We see that communities with the highest vaccination rates have lower new cases and hospital admissions, and communities with the lowest vaccination rates have higher new cases and hospital admissions,” Zients said.

In the UK, the Delta variant recently became the dominant strain there, outperforming its native alpha variant, which was first discovered in the country last fall. The Delta variant now accounts for more than 60% of new cases in the UK

Dr. Anthony Fauci, chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden, said last week that “we cannot allow this to happen in the United States” when he urged more people, especially young adults, to be vaccinated.

Amazon sellers who were hoping for an easier Prime Day after the 2020 pandemic chaos are unlikely to take a break this year.

The company’s two-day discount bonanza begins on Monday. It comes as the retail sector is grappling with widespread supply chain problems that make it more difficult to stock stores and distribution centers and keep pace with consumer demand.

Companies face several cascading problems at the same time. The global supply chain is still feeling the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has forced many factories to temporarily close amid worsening outbreaks of the virus. Supply chains were further disrupted by the lack of shipping containers and air freight capacity, as well as materials such as semiconductors and plastics. Labor shortages have created significant backlogs across the system.

A Covid-19 outbreak in southern China’s Guangdong Province has exacerbated the problem. Local officials have put restrictions such as restrictions on ship entry to limit the spread of the virus. This has reduced the available capacity of one of the busiest ports in the world, the Yantian International Container Terminal in Shenzen.

Small and medium-sized Amazon sellers who import their products from China are tense due to global delivery difficulties. Many companies stocked up on as much inventory as possible months before Prime Day.

“I haven’t seen anything like it”

Isaac Larian, the toy maker behind popular Bratz doll brand, said his company MGA Entertainment is in good shape for Prime Day as it started planning many months ago. That planning has likely paid off, as Larian said he is now looking at hundreds of containers of goods tied up in Yantian ports while shipments en route to the U.S. are taking weeks longer than expected.

“I’ve seen a lot of challenges in 42 years in this business, but I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Larian.

These issues are “increasing the time and expense” of the global supply chain, said Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policies for the National Retail Federation, a trade group.

In the over 16,000 NRF Members, more than two-thirds of the membership, said they had been forced to add two to three weeks to their supply chains, the NRF recently wrote in a letter to President Joe Biden calling for action to be taken against port challenges. All NRF members reported to the group that their costs had increased as a result of the disruptions.

“This does not damage just one sector,” said Gold. “Everyone is hurt because of it.”

With consumer demand remaining high and supplies limited, items could run out faster than in previous years. Freightos freight marketplace surveyed 177 small and medium-sized businesses selling on Amazon and found that just over 75% of them continue to have supply chain interruptions. Almost half of those surveyed said they would expect storage bottlenecks on Prime Day due to freight delays.

Reporting on Amazon Prime Day 2021

Read more about Amazon and others scheduled for this year’s sales events:

“People may be planning months in advance for Prime Day, but most sellers … don’t have the money to get inventory three months in advance,” said Zvi Schreiber, CEO of Freightos. “You have to pay for inventory and then for storage and they all operate at low margins. Now, on shipping, they operate at even lower margins. So when you have leaner margins and no cash left, you can’t just three Stock up months in advance. “

Millions of small and medium-sized businesses offer their goods on Amazon’s third-party marketplace. The segment now accounts for more than half of Amazon’s e-commerce sales and has helped it achieve record sales.

An Amazon spokesman told CNBC in a statement that Prime Day 2021 will feature more deals than last year, with more than 1 million deals from small and medium-sized businesses around the world, suggesting seller participation in the event stays high.

In addition, more than 2.5 million consumers took advantage of a Pre-Prime Day promotion to buy goods from small businesses within the first 24 hours of the launch. Amazon did not share how many retailers took part in the promotion.

“We’re evolving Prime Day and evolving it to ensure that our Prime members and distributors find incredible value,” said the spokesman.

Bernie Thompson’s business takes it on all sides. His electronics company Plugable Technologies suffered from the shortage of shipping containers and the persistent chip shortage caused by the increasing demand for electronics.

To make matters worse, Thompson estimates that Plugables goods worth about $ 60,000 are stuck on the Ever Given, a giant container ship that was wedged in the Suez Canal for six days in March, blocking traffic on one of the world’s busiest waterways.

As a result, Plugable had to “severely limit” its participation in this year’s Prime Day, said Thompson. One of its top products, usually selected by Amazon as a Prime Day deal in the UK, is currently hanging on the Ever Given.

“We’re about to have this product sold out on Amazon UK,” said Thompson. “There is no way for us to get a Prime Day deal in the UK. Our goods are on Ever Given.”

Participation in Prime Day

Thompson is confident that Prime Day will continue to attract many brands and sellers, but attendance could have “decreased dramatically” from last year as companies may not be sure they have enough products in stock to close deals.

If you walk by on Prime Day, you may be missing out on a barrage of sales. While the company is not generating any revenue from the event, Amazon raised an estimated $ 10.4 billion worldwide on Prime Day last year in mid-October, according to Digital Commerce 360.

Launched in 2015, Prime Day is designed in part to attract more Prime subscribers, promote Amazon’s products and services, and provide a boost in sales during what is typically a slower shopping time.

It can also give a significant boost to third-party businesses. In 2020, Amazon said third-party sales on Prime Day were $ 3.5 billion, growing faster year over year than its own retail business with first-party retailers.

Rick Watson, CEO of e-commerce consultancy RMW Commerce Consulting, said all of its clients spanning the furniture, fashion, household, and food and beverage categories are experiencing supply chain disruptions but continue to plan to participate in Prime Day.

Watson said larger sellers could benefit more during this year’s Prime Day as they are in a better position to secure top ad placement, such as “Lightning Deals,” which are limited-time offers, which are often highlighted on the Amazon homepage. These ad placements are typically secured months in advance and require sellers to provide Amazon with inventory levels for the advertised product, he added.

“When you get certain advertisements, they want to know what the inventory is,” said Watson. “Larger sellers might benefit this Prime Day as they likely have the financial flexibility to make those commitments this year.”

Some sellers are already getting nervous because they have enough goods in stock for the Christmas shopping season – a crucial selling time of the year. Retailers usually start planning and ordering their inventory in the spring so it arrives in the fall.

Thompson said global chip scarcity has led some of its suppliers to forecast lead times of up to a year, meaning it is a bottleneck that could last for several quarters or into next year.

“Prime Day is only about a week away, but I’m not thinking about Prime Day right now,” Thompson said. “I am thinking of Christmas and I am thinking of the beginning of next year.”

The way to take care of a moldy bathe curtain

No matter how often you clean tiles, faucets, and tub / shower, you may still be struggling with an annoying, recurring problem: mold on your shower curtain. One day you put in a fresh liner and it seems like just a few days later the mold has reappeared.

Why is this happening and what can you do about it? Mold remediation expert Michael Rubino breaks it down in an article for mindbodygreen. Here’s what you should know.

What causes mold on shower curtains

Basically, it all comes down to ventilation and airflow. “The excess moisture that’s trapped between the shower curtain and shower screen can be trapped, creating an ideal environment for mold and mildew (which, by the way should be taken just as seriously as mold) to grow, ”writes Rubino.

Ventilating the bathroom

The obvious solution is to turn on the exhaust fan, but as Rubino explains, you can’t just flip a switch and expect everything to be fixed:

It’s worth noting that when you turn on your exhaust fan you create a negative pressure environment in your bathroom that sucks out steam and air. In order for your exhaust fan to work properly, you need to replace that air at the same rate that you are pulling it out. For this reason, it is important to break open a door or window every time you drive.

If you don’t replace airflow into the bathroom, your exhaust fan won’t work as efficiently as it could. Have you ever noticed moisture dripping from your fan after a hot shower? This is moisture that has become trapped in the ventilation opening due to a lack of air supply.

And if you don’t have an exhaust fan, you’ll definitely want to open a window to let the hot, steamy air go somewhere.

Other ways to prevent mold from growing on your shower curtain

In addition to good ventilation of your bathroom, Rubino has other suggestions on how to keep your shower curtain free from mold:

Separate the shower curtain and the liner

Since mold often forms between the shower curtain and the liner, take the extra five seconds after you shower or bath to separate it – that is, the liner must be in the tub and the curtain outside the tub. For ruby:

By keeping them separate you can both dry properly. When these two wet surfaces touch, the moisture can linger between them for much longer. (Consider leaving a wet sponge on a work surface; both the sponge and the work surface underneath would remain damp for a long time.)

Don’t leave your bath mat on the floor

Since the goal is to keep your shower area dry, according to Rubino, it’s also important to hang your bath mat after you shower or bathe to avoid the same type of moisture ingress as between the curtains.

“Just place your bath mat over the shower rail or towel rail so it can dry completely between uses and you’ll have far fewer problems with mold in your shower area,” he writes.

Wash your bath mat and shower curtain regularly

If you’re not in the habit of regularly throwing your bath mat and shower curtain in the laundry, it’s time to start, says Rubino – he washes his once a week. “Over time, dust builds up on both of them, and when dust builds up, it acts as a kind of magnet that deposited mold spores can land on,” he writes.

How to get rid of pre-existing mold

If your shower curtain has been relatively cheap and is moldy, it’s probably best to throw it away, then start fresh and use the tips above to prevent mold from building up in the first place. However, if you want to try cleaning it, Rubino recommends using this product.

Another option comes from the website The maids. They recommend spraying your moldy shower curtain with a solution of two parts hydrogen peroxide and one part water, leaving it on for five to ten minutes, and then scrubbing it with an equal parts solution of baking soda and water. Since you are dealing with mold, ideally do this outside, but if that is not practical or possible you can also clean it in the tub yourself.

How this dad took a failed franchise restaurant and doubled his gross sales: “Folks got here as much as me and gave me cash”

As the general manager of a Pie Five Pizza restaurant, Joel Roberts sometimes worked alone in the restaurant. This wasn’t usually a problem for the understaffed franchise location, but it did pose a major problem when Roberts had a medical emergency in 2017. He couldn’t find anyone to cover his otherwise unmanned shift, so he resorted to his next best option – his papa.

Steve Roberts showed up to take his son’s shift but was not happy to find the restaurant was running out of food, working on broken machinery, and not being clean.

“[Steve] got up there and said, ‘Oh man, what a mess. Give me your boss’s phone number right away, ”says Joel.

Steve was so mad at the clutter that he called the owner to voice his complaints. Instead of refuting the father’s complaints, the owner responded by asking Steve if he would like to buy the shop front. Despite his lack of business experience, he did. In 2018, Steve officially signed the ownership papers with the intention of turning the establishment inside out.

What Steve lacked in business experience he made up for with enthusiasm. After making the decision to own the Pie Five site, he devoted a month of his time looking to the restaurant’s problems.

“I spoke to employees: ‘What do you see? What’s the good, the bad about this place? ‘”He says. “Of course they tell me because they know I was Joel’s father and they had no idea I was going to buy it.”

Similarly, this restaurant owner went viral for responding to an influencer who wanted to eat for free

Address bad things before they get worse

Steve found two glaring problems in the Pie Five store. The first dealt with the internal culture of the restaurant and its staff. Not only was it understaffed – the store failed to motivate employees to take an interest in the company. Some employees gave away products for free, consumed company supplies all day, and even stole from the pizzeria. The staffing problem was so severe that the former owner, Steve, recommended firing all of the restaurant’s employees and hiring new ones.

Aside from the internal issues, the biggest issue, according to Steve, was the store’s external reputation. Steve was well aware of the store’s bad reputation as he didn’t even order from the restaurant before becoming the owner. An online search confirmed the store’s bad reputation: reviewers rated it 2.3-star on Google, with complaints ranging from poor service to a dirty storefront.

There are a number of factors that have contributed to the restaurant’s reputation, but Steve says one of the main reasons was its ownership. Although he had a restaurant in Ankeny, Iowa, the previous owner ran the restaurant from Illinois. This time, the father who became the owner opted for a more practical solution.

Many of Steve’s solutions came from life experience. His two decades as a foreman at the railway led him, for example, to the motivation problems of his employees. On the railroad, companies encouraged their employees by offering small prizes as a reward for their hard work. As a result, Steve followed the same strategy, offering gift cards to employees when they completed their training and became familiar with Pie Five Pizza resources.

More importantly, Steve was honest with his staff in order to get them to look after them.

“I showed them the numbers. I showed them that this box of cheese was $ 200, and if they keep making the products the way they do it, it’ll cost me an additional $ 30,000 a year, ”he says.

Steve also used this type of involvement to improve the franchise’s reputation. Taking advantage of his deep community involvement as a third generation Ankeny resident and a board member of the Little League, he announced to the community that he was the new owner of the Pie Five Pizza on social media. Although he didn’t have the capital to sponsor parishioners, Steve handed out free pizza coupons and fed churches, animal rescues, and nursing homes among other community groups. He made up for bad reviews by offering discounts to his customers so they could give Pie Five another chance. As the owner, he even told his customers how much money he was making in order to be more transparent.

“All these other restaurants tell me, ‘Hey man, you’re pretty sober when you tell people how much you make in a day,'” says Steve. “These people make us so why shouldn’t they know what we’re doing?”

When the business implemented these changes, Steve said the positive results were immediately apparent. With Steve running the restaurant and Joel at the helm, the restaurant managed to move from $ 5,000 a week to doubling that amount. The franchise location gained a new reputation as a role model for others and won a handful of awards at the company’s 2019 Pie Five Pizza Summit, including Rookie of the Year and Turnaround Store of the Year.

Despite all the support the restaurant has received from the community, the father admits that the success he has now achieved would not have been possible without the support of a franchisor.

“If you already have this franchise and all the legwork done for you, all you have to do is call someone or look it up in a book,” says Steve. “Pie Five was amazing to me. They let me go out of the box more than they probably should have. “

A cinematic moment

Measuring the success of Steve’s out-of-the-box ideas for improving store culture and community engagement can be difficult to quantify. But perhaps the greatest anecdotal evidence of the franchisee’s success came when the store hit rock bottom during the pandemic. In a situation not uncommon for the restaurant industry in 2020, Steve had to raise $ 8,000 over a weekend or expect the store to close. So he went online and pleaded for help on social media. The result was a local blogger survival achievement versus the movie It’s a Wonderful Life, as the store made $ 28,000 in three days.

“People came up to me and gave me money, didn’t even eat in the restaurant because our line was so long,” says Steve. “It just makes you cry.”

It’s hard to imagine a business with the ability to garner so much support was the same restaurant that barely drew customers just a few years ago. But some values have stayed the same from the start – being there for his son is what brought Steve to the franchise in the first place, and family continues to be a priority.

“You really learn what family is and what family needs when it comes to owning something, leading something and being successful. You have to be there together, otherwise it won’t be successful, ”says Steve. “I am blessed with my family and I am blessed to have such a large following and support.”

The distinction between hardscape and softscape in a backyard

0

While we think of landscaping in terms of plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs, that’s only part of the story. Even if your garden was designed to look like a wildflower meadow, chances are you have a non-living component like rocks or a fence. This is the “hardscape” and the plants are the “softscape”. Here’s what you should know about both categories of landscaping.

Hardscape vs. Softscape

In short, these two types of landscaping mean exactly what you mean. As Lisa Hallett Taylor explains in an article for Die Fichte:

Hardscape is the tough stuff in your garden: concrete, brick and stone. Softscape is the soft, growing stuff, like perennial flowers, shrubs, succulents, and trees. Softscape is alive; It’s not hardscape. Ideally, a well-designed landscape includes a balance between the two elements.

How Hardscape Affects Softscape

The plants in your garden are likely your primary focus as they require regular maintenance, but the hardscape can play an important role in their successful growth. Indeed, Kate explains Reggevv in an article for Dwell, the hardscape comes first:

Typically, hardscape elements must be installed, built or completed before the softscape elements can be installed. This is because hardscape materials are typically incorporated into the ground and often physically alter the landscape – whether it’s removing debris for a pool or cutting and backfilling soil to install a retaining wall or patio.

G / O Media can receive a commission

In addition, it is also important to consider the materials used in your hardscape as they have different effects on the environment. Pro Taylor:

Hardscape materials have different effects on the environment. Patches, which are hardscape, prevent water from seeping into the ground, increasing the runoff that can carry pollutants into streams. Porous materials allow water to penetrate the soil. Hardscaping is a benefit to a garden as it reduces potential erosion and keeps the soil intact.

Ultimately, the idea is that both your hardscape and softscape blend in with the local environment, mimicking something found in nature. Reggev explains. This means choosing plants that are native to the area and grow well in a given climate.

Gigi Hadid celebrates Zayn Malik’s first father’s day with a uncommon image of Khai

However, the new father admitted that he did not expect to love parenting so much.

“I had time for my relationship and stuff too, but it was still just about me,” he explained. “The fact that [Khai] It was so easy just getting used to it was surprising to me because I just love spending my days with her, hanging out with her and just doing really relaxing, laid back things. Just just kidding on TV, watching Netflix, learning nursery rhymes, just rolling around with her and just singing for her. It’s a really different rhythm of life, but it was really easy to get used to. I think that’s the most surprising thing. “

He also raved about Gigi’s maternity journey, saying, “She’s good. She’s a bad mother. Obviously, she’s really a great help with everything and she’s fine.”

Covid outbreak forces the US embassy in Kabul to be blocked

WASHINGTON – The U.S. embassy in Kabul was locked down Thursday as Covid cases in Afghanistan rise and the country’s fragile health system reaches its limits.

At the embassy, 114 employees tested positive for the coronavirus and are currently in isolation, one person has died and several people have been medically evacuated.

“The resources of the intensive care unit of the military hospital are running at full capacity, which is forcing our health units to create temporary Covid-19 wards to care for oxygen-dependent patients. 95% of our cases are people who are not or not fully vaccinated.” The embassy wrote in a statement.

With immediate effect, the embassy said, employees would be restricted to their quarters, except to fetch food from restaurants or to exercise or relax in the open air alone.

“Individuals can walk, run, or relax outdoors without a mask provided they are ALONE, which means they are at least 6 meters away from others. Any further need requires a mask, ”the statement went on, adding that face-to-face meetings indoors are prohibited unless“ absolutely ”. business critical. “

People who do not adhere to the guidelines could be removed from the post “on the next available flight,” the embassy added.

“The restrictions will continue until the chain of transmission is broken,” the statement said.

Afghan hospitals are running out of medical equipment and other resources quickly as cases have increased 2,400% in the past month, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said Thursday.

Last week, the US embassy in Kabul shut down all consular visa services to deal with an “intense third wave of Covid-19 cases,” which may hamper visa status for thousands of Afghans who have supported the US military through the conflict .

Legislators on Capitol Hill on Thursday expressed concern about whether the backlog of more than 10,000 Afghan translators and their families would be cleared before remaining US troops pull out of the war-weary country.

Army General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Forces Committee during a hearing on the Pentagon’s budget proposal that “planning is underway” to protect Afghans who have served alongside US and NATO forces.

The country’s senior military officer added that the U.S. military would be able to accommodate any request as the State Department is running the thorough visa process for eligible Afghans.

On Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had passed the center of its Herculean task of withdrawing troops and equipment from Afghanistan.

The US military has removed approximately 611 loads of material that were flown out of the country by large cargo planes, according to an update from US Central Command.

The flight crew assigned to Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, carry their equipment into a C-17 Globemaster III assigned to Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina on April 27, 2021.

Staff Sgt. Kylee Gardner | U.S. Air Force photo

Approximately 14,000 pieces of equipment that will not be handed over to the Afghan military have been turned over to the Defense Logistics Agency for destruction. The US has officially handed over six facilities to the Afghan military.

Biden announced in April a full withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan by September 11th, which would end America’s longest war.

Biden’s withdrawal deadline breaks with a proposed deadline that the Trump administration negotiated with the Taliban last year. Accordingly, all foreign armed forces should have left Afghanistan by May 1st.

The removal of approximately 3,000 US soldiers coincides with the 20th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks that spurred America’s entry into protracted wars in the Middle East and Central Asia.

How To Make Your Dwelling Look Like A Resort (In A Good Method)

Illustration for the article titled How to Make Your Home Look Like a Hotel (In a Good Way)Photo: Checubus (Shutterstock)

Although people are now traveling more than six months ago, not everyone is able to take a few days off and rest in a hotel. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some of the nicer design features hotels have to offer. in the an article for BobVila.com, Miranda Siwak shares some tips on how to transform your home into a quiet place that feels like a high-end sanctuary. Here are some of their suggestions.

Window decorations

Hotels usually have two types of window treatments: blackout curtains and then either sheer curtains or some sort of adjustable blinds. This gives you the opportunity to sleep in complete darkness, but also to open the windows during the day (with the transparent curtains) and to maintain a certain aspect of privacy. Installing a similar setup in your bedroom at home is a relatively simple and inexpensive way to achieve a deep hotel sleep that won’t be disturbed.

Get symmetrical

As humans, we’re fans of symmetry, and that’s what we get in a hotel room. Not only is it pleasing to the eye, Siwak also says that a symmetrical space can feel more inviting. “For example, to improve the calming aesthetic, they usually put identical bedside tables with a lamp on either side of the bed or couch,” she writes.

Create a mini lounge

Most hotel rooms have some sort of seating area that can be used for everything from entertaining visitors to working remotely to falling down while you still wear your outside clothes. It also gives you a place to spend time in your bedroom that isn’t your bed – for example when you prefer to work or read by yourself but don’t necessarily want to go to bed. Per Siwak:

You too can create a hotel-like atmosphere by creating an intimate sitting area in your bedroom or living room. Incorporating additional seating into a room is also a great way to invite textures and patterns into the room for a bit of visual interest.
