Virgin Galactic took a step closer to developing its space tourism system on Saturday and successfully completed its first space flight in more than two years.

The company’s starship, named VSS Unity, was lifted to an altitude of approximately 44,000 feet by a carrier aircraft called the VMS Eve. The plane then released the spaceship, which fired its rocket engine and accelerated it to more than three times the speed of sound.

After a slow setback of microgravity at the edge of space, Unity returned with a glide through the atmosphere and landed on the runway at Spaceport America in New Mexico, from which it had previously taken off.

“Now in space,” the company tweeted during the flight.

Pilots CJ Sturckow and Dave Mackay flew Unity. The couple previously flew into space, as did fellow Virgin Galactic pilots Michael “Sooch” Masucci and Mark Stucky, and head astronaut trainer Beth Moses, who each received astronaut wings after the company’s first two space flights.

The US officially regards pilots who have flown 50 miles as astronauts.

Virgin Galactic pilots head to the company’s SpaceShipTwo Unity spacecraft, which is attached to the Eve jet carrier aircraft.

Virgo Galactic

Virgin Galactic’s Unity spaceship is designed to accommodate up to six passengers along with the two pilots. The company has approximately 600 reservations for tickets on future flights, which sell for prices between $ 200,000 and $ 250,000.

The space flight is the first since February 2019 and the third to date. Virgin Galactic flew two space tests from its development facility in California’s Mojave Desert before moving to its operational base in New Mexico. The company expected to meet some or all of the remaining Federal Aviation Administration milestones with this flight and obtain a key license to conduct regular space flights.

Unity also carried NASA-funded payloads on the mission as part of the agency’s Flight Opportunities program.

Virgin Galactic’s shares rose 22% in the past two trading days after the company announced plans for the spaceflight test to avoid a potential maintenance issue that threatened to delay the flight.

The spaceflight is one of four remaining flights for Virgin Galactic to complete development of its SpaceShipTwo missile system. The second spaceflight test will carry four passengers to test the spacecraft’s cabin, while the third test is to fly founder Sir Richard Branson.

The company’s flight test program has been significantly delayed in recent months. Saturday’s spaceflight was a rerun of a December attempt interrupted by an electromagnetic interference issue, and the company’s promised start of commercial service has been postponed from mid-2020 to early 2022.

Youngster Tax Credit score – Two main IRS portals can assist guarantee you might be getting the complete sum of money that you’re entitled to

TWO major IRS portals are helping parents get child tax credit – and making sure they’re getting the full amount of money they’re entitled to.

President Joe Biden said that starting July 15, American families will automatically receive monthly payments of up to $ 300 per child as part of a new tax break.

There have been “important changes to the child tax credit that will help many families get prepayments starting this summer,” says the IRS.

And eligible Americans can receive a flat-rate child tax credit of $ 3,600 in lieu of monthly payments.

The payments are an integral part of the Democrats’ Covid Relief Act passed in March to help families recover from the punitive pandemic.

The monthly checks of up to $ 300 per child for millions of families are part of an ambitious effort to reduce child poverty in the United States.

The extended CTC payments are slated to go to eligible families starting July 15. Credit includes children who will turn 17 in 2021.

The IRS will open two portals for families with eligible dependents to update information and decline monthly payments.

These portals can help ensure that you are receiving the full amount of the child tax credit that you are entitled to, explains CNet.

A portal allows Americans to stop the monthly tax credit and get a higher payout instead.

A second portal will open to people who normally do not file income taxes so they can provide the IRS with updated information such as the ages of their qualified dependents.

When will I get a child tax credit in 2021?

The cash will automatically be set up to be spent monthly from July through December, and the second half will then end up in bank accounts next year.

Monthly checks of $ 250 to $ 300 will begin on July 15 unless you opt out.

If you opt out, keep in mind that you will not receive the lump sum until 2022 after the IRS processes your 2021 tax return.

Payment in full is made with your tax refund or can be used to offset taxes you owe.

An online portal will be launched in July allowing taxpayers to obtain credit for filing their income taxes and declining advance payments.

Who Is Eligible for Child Tax Credit?

Most families are eligible for CTC as long as the children are either a US citizen, US citizen, or a US resident alien.

The children must also have lived with the person who claimed more than half of the tax year and must be claimed as dependent on the tax return.

This can be a son, a daughter, a stepchild, a foster child, a brother,

Sister, stepbrother or stepsister, but can also be a grandson, niece or nephew.

You can use an IRS online tool to verify that you are eligible for the balance.

To use it, you need to know your login status, whether you can claim the person as a dependent, and the person’s date of birth.

Under the American Rescue Plan, child tax credit provisions will increase payments and significantly increase the number of eligible families.

The practical result is direct payments for each child to families, ranging from the impoverished to the solid middle class, from $ 3,600 per year for teens under six and $ 3,000 per year for older children.

Around 39 million households receive at least partial payments, which is an estimated 88 percent of American children.

Columbia University’s Center for Poverty and Social Policy estimates the infusions of money could push 45 percent of children living in poverty above the poverty line.

These include reducing black child poverty by 52 percent, Hispanic child poverty by 45 percent, and Native American child poverty by 62 percent.

According to the IRS, for the 2021 tax year, “Families who apply for the CTC will receive up to $ 3,000 per qualifying child aged 6-17 through the end of 2021”.

You will receive $ 3,600 per Qualifying Child under the age of six by the end of 2021.

Under previous law, the CTC amount at year-end was up to $ 2,000 per qualified child under the age of 17.

The increased amounts will be reduced (phased out) for incomes over $ 150,000 for married taxpayers filing a joint tax return and qualifying widows or widowers, $ 112,500 for heads of household, and $ 75,000 for all other taxpayers.

Regular Child Tax Credit 2021 prepayments are made July through December to eligible taxpayers who have been US residents for more than half a year.

The sum of the prepayments is up to 50 percent of the child tax credit.

Prepayments are estimated based on the information contained in the 2020 tax returns of eligible taxpayers – or their 2019 returns if the 2020 tax returns have not yet been filed and processed.

Albuquerque-born Democrat Javier Martinez of the state of New Mexico described the CTC as a philosophical departure from mid-20th century programs like Medicaid and grocery stamps.

The smaller monthly surcharges, he said, are more likely to be included in the household budget and create security in a family.

The expanded CTC expires in 2022 – but Biden has proposed extending it until 2025.

Tips on how to decode the numbers on luggage of fertilizer

Illustration for article titled How to Read Fertilizer Numbers and Choose the One That Will Work Best for Your GardenPhoto: MIA Studio (Shutterstock)

If, like so many others, it was your first gardening during the pandemic, you have probably already figured out that it means more than just planting a few seeds or baby plants and letting nature work its magic. Sure, you may be aware that using fertilizer, for example, can help your plants grow, but you may not know (or have heard of) the numbers given for different types of fertilizers.

As it turns out, the three digits on the front of the fertilizer packages actually mean something. In one current article for BobVila.comMark Wolfe gives us the key to this fertilizer code.

Where are these fertilizer numbers and what do they mean?

The not so secret fertilizer codes are located on the front of the packaging and consist of three digits separated by hyphens (e.g. 3-2-1). These are the fertilizer’s NPK numbers, which, according to Wolfe, match the nutritional information on food – with the exception of the nutritional value of a specific fertilizer for plants.

According to Wolfe, there are 16 known essential nutrients for plants, and the three most important are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). That is why they are prominently placed on the front of fertilizer packages:

The three NPK numbers on a fertilizer label indicate the percentage by weight of each item in the package. In other words, a pack of 24-0-6 fertilizer contains 24 percent nitrogen, 0 percent phosphorus, and 6 percent potassium. The rest of the package contents are made up of other nutrients (listed somewhere on the label) and / or inert ingredients.

Once you know the percentages of each item in a fertilizer bag, you can determine the weight of each item in it. This calculation is useful when you have your soil tested and have been instructed to modify your soil with a certain amount of a certain element.

G / O Media can receive a commission

What does each nutrient do to plants?

Depending on the combination and concentration of the three elements, some fertilizers are better suited than others for certain plant and soil conditions. Therefore Wolfe says it’s helpful to understand the role each element plays in plant growth and how to choose a fertilizer with the right nutritional balance for your horticultural needs.

Here is a quick rundown of the properties of each element: Courtesy Wolfe::

Nitrogen (N)

  • Feeds foliage plant growth
  • Used to help lawns grow and keep their green color
  • Trees and shrubs don’t need as much nitrogen as they only grow one set of leaves per season

Phosphorus (P)

  • Stimulates root, flower and fruit development, especially in annual flower beds, fruit plants (such as tomatoes) and newly planted seedlings
  • However, if your soil already has a decent amount of phosphorus, adding more can harm your plants

Potassium (K)

  • Promotes strong stems, well-formed flowers, sturdy fruits and healthy roots
  • Helps plants use water and withstand drought

Italy, Iceland, Greece and Spain are now allowing or opening their borders to people who have been vaccinated or who recently tested negative for Covid-19. The European Union has agreed to open its borders to more vaccinated tourists, including from the US

The question is: How will individuals prove their vaccine or Covid status?

By Wednesday, nearly half of the entire US population had received at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine. The new Covid infections in the country continue to decline. According to the Johns Hopkins University, the 7-day average of the daily new infections with Covid is at its lowest level since June 22nd.

This trend is helping people return to pre-pandemic activities – from concerts to indoor dining to live sporting events and even international travel. Vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks or be indoors or outdoors, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said earlier this month.

Retailers like Walmart and Costco, as well as hotel chains like Hyatt, stopped their mask requirements for vaccinated customers this month, unless required by local regulations. US officials have said they are largely relying on people to be honest about their vaccination status, and retailers and hotel chains have said they have no intention of looking for evidence of vaccine.

Officials in charge of overseeing international travel need more than the honor system. Federal officials require U.S. international travelers, including U.S. residents, to provide proof of a negative Covid test result when boarding flights.

A Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman said DHS officials don’t check passengers’ Covid test results upon entry, but – that’s up to the airlines.

As airlines like United, Delta, and American expand their transatlantic service, they are encouraging travelers to upload health records online.

The travel industry has urged the Biden government to create a set of standards for digital health records to lift travel restrictions that have been crushing demand for overseas leisure and business travel for more than a year. The administration has announced that it will leave the task of developing digital health data to the private sector. Federal officials also said they did not intend to keep a database of vaccination records; that is left to the states.

Enter digital health apps. Sometimes referred to as vaccination records, some of these platforms are already under development and some are in use, including partnerships with airlines and local governments.

Here’s what it says on vaccination cards in the US:

What is a health pass?

Digital health passports – also called vaccination passports – are platforms for smartphones that enable access to a person’s health data, e.g. B. Covid test results or vaccination status. Israel and Denmark have already made platforms available and other countries are working independently.

If people are vaccinated in the United States, they will be given proof of this in the form of a card issued by the CDC. Airlines that don’t want staff to double-check any additional travel information will look at digitized versions that can be easily scanned.

Do i need one

The health passes are not mandatory, but they can become more useful as more countries and attractions reopen.

Countries that have recently opened or plan to open their borders to foreign tourists, such as Iceland and Greece, say travelers are required to provide proof of being vaccinated against Covid-19 or proof of a recent negative Covid-19 -Testing.

So far, however, no digital health certificates are required.

“Certificates can be on paper or in electronic form,” Sveinn Gudmarsson, communications director at Iceland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said via email. “The border control assesses whether a certificate is valid and consults a representative of the chief epidemiologist [health care worker] as needed.”

In the US, since January, all incoming travelers from abroad, including citizens, have been required to provide evidence of a negative Covid-19 test, even if they are vaccinated.

More people can be admitted to venues in California if the facility provides evidence that they have been vaccinated.

Who does it

There are already several platforms. IBM developed the New York State Excelsior Pass, which was tested at a New York Nets game in February. The app uses blockchain to communicate with government vaccination protocols or with health care providers. The display shows a simple go or no-go sign, not the actual test result.

The International Air Transport Association, a trading group that represents nearly 300 airlines worldwide, has launched its own digital health passport. Singapore started accepting Covid-19 test results on this platform this month.

Some airlines like JetBlue Airways have announced trials with another Commons Project Foundation digital health pass called the Common Pass.

United Airlines recently announced that it is expanding its own app to allow travelers to book Covid-19 test appointments online. The results are uploaded automatically and customers know if they can travel to their destination.

The European Union and Israel are developing their own digital health certificates.

Why are they controversial?

Digital health certificates have raised concerns about the security of customer data with third-party apps that communicate with databases containing sensitive health information. It has also raised inequality concerns as the platforms work primarily on individuals’ smartphones.

Florida, Texas, and Arizona governors have decided to stop companies from asking customers to provide proof of vaccination. Arizona governor Doug Ducey signed an ordinance last month banning these certificates as a requirement for receiving services, saying that vaccinations are an individual’s choice, not the government.

Even the World Health Organization said it was against requiring proof of a vaccine for entry into another country, “given the limited (albeit growing) evidence of vaccines’ power in reducing transmission and the persistent inequality in the global world.” Vaccine distribution “.

Do I have to check the vaccination forever?

That is still unclear, just as it is not clear when other Covid-era rules such as masks on airplanes or public transport will apply. Even the travel industry, one of the hardest hit by the pandemic, has reservations.

Willie Walsh, former CEO of British Airways’ parent company International Consolidated Airlines Group and current director general of IATA, said he doesn’t want vaccine detection to become a permanent fixture.

“These are measures that may be required as a temporary precaution during this crisis. Once we are through this crisis, we want these restrictions to be permanently lifted so that people can go back to travel as they did in 2019,” said he said earlier this month.

How perfectionists can study to delegate and quit management

How perfectionists can study to delegate and quit management

As anyone who has led a team knows, an effective manager means more than just making sure the job is done and goals are achieved. For perfectionists, however, these aspects of the job can be especially challenging – because the only way to make sure everything is up to their standards is to do it yourself (or at least double-check). In other words, some perfectionists may have difficulty delegating and are therefore overwhelmed and possibly on the verge of burnout.

This is a problem that Melody Wilding– an executive coach and licensed social worker – speaks regularly to her clients. Based on her experiences, she has developed some strategies that perfectionists can use to learn how to delegate (and then actually do it). She recently shared some of these tips in an article for Fast Company. Here’s what to know.

Start with a cost-benefit analysis

While perfectionists are likely to constantly weigh the pros and cons of their choices at work, Wilding recommends They take a step back and do a similar analysis of themselves and their delegation methods (or lack thereof) – including the impact they can have on colleagues:

Their overfunctioning can lead to a dynamic in which others are underfunctioning. When you take responsibility for doing everything and “fixing” situations, others have no opportunity to get involved. Delegation is not a punishment, nor is it about you “throwing work on people”. Rather, it is an opportunity for your team and colleagues to learn, grow, and acquire new skills and competencies.

This includes examining how their difficulties with delegation affect their own mental health and possibly opportunities for their own personal growth. Per wilding::

While you might think that you are trying to occupy more positions as a rock star, a lack of executive delegation actually signals that you are not ready to take on any more responsibilities. Highlighting what it is about can change your behavior as people tend to be motivated by loss.

G / O Media can receive a commission

Understand that it is not all or nothing

In some cases, perfectionists will postpone something completely if they don’t believe they will be able to meet their (usually self-imposed) high standards – including delegating. But Wilding says it doesn’t necessarily have to be a big handover of entire projects: it’s okay to start small and give yourself time to familiarize yourself with the idea of putting other people in charge of specific tasks. She advises::

Start by choosing a low-stakes task that you can delegate first. Try to track your time for a week to identify candidates for the delegation. This includes tasks that:

  • Are administrative, boring and take a lot of time
  • Require a simple, repeatable process that can be easily taught
  • Do you need special skills that you don’t have

Share responsibilities as well as tasks

Although we could imagine delegating to tell someone what to do, Wilding says that perfectionists should also remember giving someone the authority to determine how something is achieved. “This requires you to let go of rigid, perfectionist thinking and the assumption that there is a ‘right’ way to get and achieve something,” she writes.

Biden’s technique for the Russia-Germany gasoline pipeline is complicated and requires clarification, says the overseas coverage professional

Michael O’Hanlon, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said he thought the Biden government’s decision to lift sanctions against a Russian company overseeing the construction of a controversial gas pipeline from Russia to Germany will improve relations with Germany should.

“I think they are essentially blaming the Chancellor [Angela] Merkel wants to find a strategy that she believes will work and get Russia to behave better towards Ukraine and other places … But if that is the strategy, I would like to hear it explain and defend, not just sort of swept under the carpet, “said O’Hanlon.

The gas pipeline from Russia to Germany known as Nord Stream 2 would bring natural gas from Russia to Germany and run under the Baltic Sea. Critics on both sides of the political corridor have expressed concern that Russia could use the pipeline to leverage European nations.

Republican Senator Rob Portman slammed the decision, saying it was “contrary to our national interests and helping Russia at a particularly volatile time as it hurts Ukraine and our allies in the European Union”.

New Hampshire Democrat Jeanne Shaheen said in a statement that “the completion of this pipeline poses a threat to US security interests and the stability of our partners in the region”.

The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

O’Hanlon told CNBC’s The News with Shepard Smith that he agreed with the critics.

“It’s confusing why you would give Russia more leeway, more leverage and also the ability to bypass Ukraine in moving gas to Europe,” said O’Hanlon. “It doesn’t bother me making a good decision.”
