DUBLIN – The look of Irish banking has changed dramatically.

Within a few weeks, NatWest-owned Ulster Bank announced it would cease operations, while KBC Ireland opened talks to sell its loan book and exit.

The moves could eventually result in only three banks in the Irish market – the two main players, the Bank of Ireland and AIB and the permanent TSB – ringing alarm bells about the state of banking competition in the country.

Meanwhile, fintech (financial technology), which is well-positioned with venture capital financings like Revolut and N26, has gained momentum in the market. Revolut has around 1.3 million users in Ireland while N26 has around 200,000 users.

Adrienne Gormley, Chief Operating Officer of the German N26, which is itself a fully regulated bank, is aware of the drastically changed market.

“Number one, we see it as an opportunity. While the Ulster Bank news was probably on the agenda for some time, the KBC announcement surprised people,” she told CNBC.

It may offer opportunities, but it also begs the question of what challenges and problems are so prevalent in the Irish market that two big banks would wash their hands and leave.

“While we are assessing what is happening and why others are leaving, we still need to look at our customers with very clear eyes and focus on customer needs in the market. Of course we need to look well and see why others are leaving? Is it because they have to hold too much capital? “

The emergence and popularity of digital banking have been instrumental in changing this landscape. Earlier this year, the Bank of Ireland announced plans to close 103 branches in the country. CEO Francesca McDonagh said the move to online services was a key driver of this decision.

Digital banking and the arrival of fintech competitors have changed the dynamics of the Irish banking market, but serious questions remain about the state of competition and what this means for consumers.

Banks in sync

Fintech operators or neo-banks have taken the baton for instant payments, leaving many of the incumbents behind to regain market share.

A consortium of Irish banks – at least AIB, Bank of Ireland, Permanent TSB and KBC – are trying to win back some of this customer base with their own app.

The app, tentatively titled Synch, enables instant payments between accounts at any bank.

The banks involved were excited about the project, but Michael Dowling, a professor of finance at Dublin City University, told CNBC that the prospect raises some warnings about the competition.

According to Dowling, the Synch app looks like a closed shop where the banks want to “set up a system in which they can essentially exclude others from this payment network”.

He added that mechanisms such as SEPA Instant are already in place for banks in Europe to make instant payments.

The banks’ synchronization proposal is currently with the Irish Watchdog, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission. An initial submission by the banks was rejected by the supervisory authority due to missing details. A second registration took place shortly afterwards.

The Banking & Payments Federation Ireland, an industry group that coordinates synchronization efforts with banks, declined to comment, citing the CCPC process.

Future of competition

Instant payments may be one thing that has cornered fintech companies, but question marks still hover over the future of long-term loans and mortgages in the country.

N26 is committed to lending in other markets but has not brought these services to Ireland.

“We are a fully licensed bank so it is obviously interesting for us to understand what suite of products in this area could work in the Irish market,” said Gormley.

“Given the news from Ulster Bank and KBC and the very dramatic shift in Irish banking, we obviously need to consider how and what we would offer to the Irish market.”

Dowling said the outlook for competition in the Irish banking sector is bleak amid the dwindling number of banks – but Starling Bank, another relative newcomer to the fintech scene, has long promised to enter the market and is aiming for its banking license the Central Bank to Bank of Ireland.

“I don’t think there’s a real possibility that another bank is popping up right now,” Dowling said, adding that other European banks are unlikely to be drawn to the market.

He added that regulation was needed to prevent monopoly behavior by the remaining banks.

“It’s this longer-term borrowing that we’re getting stuck with, there is no competition. There are three banks and it really is. This is where regulation needs to be put in place and we need to think creatively about how to fix this,” he said .

“This is the change we need because there won’t be an outside savior. Maybe some of the fintech firms will develop in due course, but we really need forced competition.”

Train youngsters the distinction between secrets and techniques, privateness and surprises

As adults, we understand the nuanced differences between a surprise, a secret and something private. But for children, these concepts can become blurred and overlap – and unfortunately this is a fact that kidnappers take advantage of. Because of this, it is important to define what each concept is and when it is okay – or not – so that they keep certain information to themselves.

surprises

That’s the fun! A surprise should be fun, happy, and temporary. That could mean surprising mom with a homemade cake for her birthday, or surprising her grandparents with the news that a sibling is on their way. It’s kind of a secret, but it’s a good secret because it doesn’t have to be a secret forever and once it is revealed it is meant to create happiness.

If you have a child surprised, please repeat that the reason it is okay to keep this good secret is that they just have to be silent about it for a while and they will eventually upset someone they love or delight .

Secrets

Secrets intended to be kept for a long time are usually intended to protect someone or prevent someone from getting into trouble. Some secrets are relatively harmless, such as having a grandparent making a child eat junk food that you normally wouldn’t be allowed to eat. But other secrets can be harmful or dangerous – namely, a child robber telling them to keep abuse a secret from their parents.

G / O Media can receive a commission

A great way to help them make up the difference is to talk about safe secrets versus unsafe secrets, much like you are probably already talking about safe touch versus unsafe touch. Here’s what Melissa Pintor Carnagey writes for Sex positive families::

Let them know that if another person tells them to keep something a secret, especially if that person tells them not to tell their parents, it is an unsafe secret and needs to be shared with a trusted adult. Assure them that it is always okay for them to break a secret or promise when it comes to unsafe touch. Make sure they know that you always believe them and will do whatever you can to support their safety, no matter who it concerns or how long it took.

privacy

While we want our children to be careful not to keep secrets – and especially to come to us when they have an unsafe secret – they also need to learn that some things should be kept private. Privacy is not about preventing someone from getting into trouble. It’s about respecting a person’s personal space or information. especially if this information could be embarrassing. For example, if your brother fails his spell check, it’s probably no secret, but telling the neighbors could be embarrassing for him, so it should be kept private.

There are also certain topics or discussions that many families like to keep private, such as: B. in relation to finance or employment. Discussing these things at home allows you to repeat that while this is not a secret, you want to keep the information secret within the family.

You can start teaching children about privacy, especially those related to the body, by implementing household rules that ensure everyone in the family has privacy. These rules include everyone showering or bathing alone (once old enough), dressing in private, knocking on closed bathroom and bedroom doors, and waiting for permission to enter.

Gottlieb says circumstances will decline, vaccinations monumental feat

New cases of Covid-19 are falling sharply in the US as millions of people are vaccinated every day. This fuels optimism that the nation may have averted the surge in infections in other parts of the world and is finally turning the corner for worse outbreaks worldwide.

As of Saturday, the 7-day average daily new cases fell below 50,000 for the first time since October and is down 17% from the previous week, according to a CNBC analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University. Hospital stays and deaths due to the disease are also decreasing.

The cases are falling as more Americans get vaccinated. To date, more than 100 million people have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or nearly a third of the US population. Approximately 146 million people, or 44% of the population, have received at least one dose of vaccine.

Former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said Sunday that the steep decline in new Covid-19 cases in the US is likely to continue and predicted a “relatively calm summer in terms of the spread of coronavirus” .

“Look, the situation in the US continues to improve, and I think the decline in cases will accelerate in the coming weeks,” Gottlieb said on CBS News’ Face the Nation.

The doctor credited the mass vaccination campaign launched under President Donald Trump and continued under President Joe Biden to help stem the spread of the disease.

The rate of vaccine administration has declined slightly in the past few weeks after months of spike after receiving one for most of the people who were most likely to want a shot. However, Gottlieb said that continued vaccination, even in a slower location, will lower virus transmission.

“This was a monumental achievement – the introduction of this vaccine, the vaccination of so many Americans – and it will go on,” said Gottlieb. “We will keep working on it. The vaccination rate will slow down in the coming weeks. But we will continue to take in more people when we come into the summer.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House pandemic advisor, suggested last week that in a few weeks’ time he would expect “a significant reduction in the number of infections per day and a significant reduction in all parameters, namely hospitalizations and deaths.”

The CDC has revised its public health guidelines, stating that fully vaccinated people can attend small outdoor gatherings without a mask.

“Today is another day when we can take a step back to normal,” said CDC director Rochelle Walensky during a press conference on the announcement. “When you are fully vaccinated things are much safer for you than those who are not fully vaccinated.”

Celebrating the fall in cases, Biden predicted that Americans could potentially get together with friends and family to celebrate July Fourth.

“After a long, tough year, this will make this Independence Day very special – where we not only mark our independence as a nation, but also begin to mark our independence from this virus,” he said in March.

Cities and states have moved in different paces in response to advances in controlling the spread of Covid-19. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said he intends to fully reopen the city on July 1. A prospect some experts thought plausible, while Governor Andrew Cuomo said he hoped the city could open even sooner.

Optimism has spread to the stock market, where US indices have hit near record highs.

To get a feel for what might be coming up for the US, Gottlieb said it might be helpful to check out heavily vaccinated San Francisco.

“About 71% of the people in San Francisco had at least one dose of the vaccine, 47% were fully vaccinated. They record about 20 cases a day. You have about 20 people hospitalized,” Gottlieb said.

“They have dramatically reduced Covid in this city and it is largely the result of vaccinations,” he added.

From a financial point of view, Gottlieb suggested that the profits from vaccination were “stalled” and “fairly sustainable”.

“We are entering warm months in which this will create a setback against the spread of the coronavirus, and we are securing these profits,” said Gottlieb.

More than 577,000 people have died of Covid-19 in the United States and more than 32 million have been infected. In December and January, health officials reported an average of more than 200,000 new infections per day.

Even if the health situation in the USA is on the verge of normal, it is deteriorating in other countries with fewer resources. In India, the new daily cases exceeded 400,000 on Saturday, a record.

He is also co-chair of the Healthy Sail Panel for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and Royal Caribbean.

The list of Premier League matches was thrown into chaos after Manchester United’s home game against Liverpool was postponed due to fierce fan protests.

A new date for the game has not yet been confirmed and both clubs are in urgent discussion to work out a plan.

The run-in at the end of the season is tight, especially for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who will play the second leg of the Europa League semi-final against Roma on Thursday in the Italian capital.

United would normally fly to Italy early Wednesday.

You could theoretically play against Liverpool today.

However, the potential risk of further protest by fans was examined last night, especially given the heavy police involvement yesterday.

Liverpool may have to postpone their game against West Brom on Sunday 16 May to Monday and visit United on Friday 14 May – the day before the FA Cup final.

Both teams will have to play their last games of the season on May 23 at 4:00 p.m. CET. Kick-off time is set in stone alongside the rest of the top games on the day.

United and Liverpool will also be in action in the middle of the week on May 19th – and a full schedule of fixtures will already be available next weekend.

Chamomile is most commonly known today as a decaffeinated herbal tea. It comes from the Asteraceae plant family and is known for its calming and digestive properties. Nowadays, many people find the herb to be effective Sleeping pills.

In the past the herbal flower has been used to treat rheumatic pain, menstrual cramps and ulcers, and as a topical application to wounds. While it is debatable whether it is actually effective when used for these purposes, there are some clever ways the herb can be used wisely in your garden – both to grow seeds and to keep your plants healthy.

Give your seeds a head start

The mild fungicidal properties Chamomile tea can keep your plants from steaming – which, as explained by Gärtnerwegis “a soil-borne fungal disease that affects seedlings and causes rotting of stem and root tissue on and under the soil surface of young plants.” To prevent your seedlings from dying before they can grow, spray your soil during your regular watering routine with chamomile.

According to garden know-howChamomile also contains tannins, which “can help the seeds germinate by softening the seed coats” if you soak your seeds in a cup of lightly brewed tea for 8-12 hours – but no more so they don’t rot.

Remove white, flaky mold from plants

We reported how you can use Vinegar to remove black mold and mushrooms from your plants. The same process can treat them if they are concerned white fuzzy mold, and help them stay healthy longer. This is not the first time Lala shares her experiences as a young mother. Just last month she described some of the “hardest days” with her newborn daughter.

“I was aware that certain foods could mess up my baby’s tummy, but never worried me too much,” she shared on Instagram Stories on April 27 with “You are an idiot, these foods give off gases to adults!” .. “

“Ocean screamed, cried and made a fuss from morning to night,” she continued. “I gave a hint after my second feed and switched from the breast to a bottle of stored milk.”

The Bravo star admitted she was getting emotional and recalled, “I sobbed when it was time for bed – yes, I was exhausted, but mostly because I felt so horrible that I did this to my cute girl when she finally felt better around 10 p.m. “”

“Wish us luck today that I pumped the whole vegan out of those milk jugs,” she added.

Hong Kong “slashies” flip down conventional jobs to pursue a number of careers

Hong Kong “slashies” flip down conventional jobs to pursue a number of careers

It’s been seven years since Gary Chung left finance and product management.

The 44-year-old is now an avowed “slashie” – someone who pursues multiple careers rather than a traditional full-time job.

“I chose to be a slashie because … working in Hong Kong, working overtime, the intensity – I couldn’t take it for a long time,” he told CNBC.

Since taking the “leap of faith,” Chung has worked as a wedding cameraman and phonics teacher – but right now he’s focused on being a taekwondo instructor and sports product sales trainer.

What is a slashie?

The American author Marci Alboher is widely held responsible for popularizing the term “slash career”. She wrote a book about people who pursue multiple interests and income streams in search of a satisfactory working life.

Another example is Hugo Ho – a personal trainer / social entrepreneur / financial planner who lives in Hong Kong.

“I don’t do the same thing every day. Every day is different,” the 31-year-old told CNBC. “I’m so refreshed and motivated every day.”

The concept of being a slashie is similar to being a freelancer – but different, said Vicki Fan, CEO of Mercer’s Hong Kong business.

“Freelancers tend to be … by the hour or project, and they are content with some kind of valleys and peaks in terms of work,” she said.

Being a slashie is “more formal,” she explained. “You would apply for similar roles that full-time workers in the market will apply for.”

An upward trend

Anecdotally, this trail seems to be becoming more and more common in Hong Kong and around the world.

Chung, the sports product taekwondo instructor / sales trainer, said a lot of people want a good work-life balance.

“As a slashie … I’d think that’s easier to offset,” he said, adding that a lot of people want to be YouTubers / internet influencers too.

Ho, the personal trainer, said advances in technology allow people to easily search for various career opportunities.

In order for the slashie work culture to be more firmly embedded, two enablers must be present, from the employer’s point of view.

Vicki fan

Mercer Hong Kong

According to Mercer’s Fan, the number of slashies has increased, particularly as a result of the pandemic.

She doesn’t see any slashies replacing the mainstream workforce, however.

“In order for the slashie work culture to be more embedded, there must be two enablers, from the employer’s perspective,” she said.

The first is redefining work to focus more on skills or responsibilities and less on working hours and processes. “Many companies’ existing roles don’t work that way,” Fan said.

Second, slashies need opportunities and access to services like health care. Otherwise, the number of people willing to be slashies is likely to be limited.

Considerations for possible slashies

Chung is under no illusions about the tradeoffs between a traditional job and his own unconventional career choices, given that he gave up a stable income and a job with health insurance to be a slashie.

“It’s a pretty big risk,” he said. “As a father of two, it’s really … a great leap in faith.”

The coronavirus crisis hit him too. Since the retail stores suffered, he didn’t get much work as a sales coach. At the same time, the taekwondo gym he was training at had to temporarily close and classes were postponed online.

We worked so hard, I’d say three times as hard, but maybe earn half as much.

“We worked so hard – I’d say three times as hard, but maybe earn half as much,” he said.

It is important to be financially prepared for an income decline, especially at the beginning, Chung said.

“After quitting my job to become a slashie, I probably only made a third of my (previous) salary,” he said. Future slashies must also have a good understanding of the roles, be disciplined, and have support from their families, he advised.

Employers may also see slashies differently when they apply for a full-time position, according to Mercer’s Fan.

When comparing the résumés of a slashie and a traditional employee, hiring managers may ask the question of whether a slashie can be dedicated to the job.

No turning back

Chung and Ho are unlikely to be concerned – both men say they are not interested in getting back to regular 9-to-5 jobs.

Ho said he was “definitely not” going back to a traditional full-time role.

“I like to be a slashie because I can have my flexibility,” he said.

Chung said he now earns more than he used to and is enjoying what he is doing.

“I really love what I do now,” he said. “As a slashie, as a taekwondo trainer, I don’t have to work that much, so … I can spend more time with my family.”

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, there were countless people across the country who, for various reasons, were unable to get the psychological help they needed. Now, after more than a year of economic, physical, psychological and emotional difficulties, more and more people are in a position where they are actively seeking some form of mental health therapy or counseling.

In particular, the number of people dealing with symptoms of depression or anxiety has tripled or quadrupled since the pandemic began Kaiser Family Foundation. While more people are realizing that therapy can benefit them, it is overall a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, finding a therapist is even more difficult – let alone one who is affordable.

But we’re starting to see this shift, with mental health support slowly becoming more accessible to some. For example, CVS Pharmacy is now offering psychological counseling in some retail stores. Here’s what you need to know about the program and how to use it.

How to get psychological counseling at CVS

Walmart started a similar program back in 2018 and now has 20 locations with mental health clinics across the country. At this point in time, mental health services are only available at CVS pharmacies in Florida, Pennsylvania and Texas, but the program will be expanded further.

It’s also still unclear exactly how much CVS counseling will cost, with the exception of those with Aetna insurance (owned by CVS) who get the service for free. And, NPR reportsCVS has negotiated contracts with other insurance companies to reduce therapy costs. It is still unclear how much a session will cost for those without health insurance.

Most veteran gardeners are fluent in the language of plants and know how to read the signs and signals that their plants are thriving, or in some sort of need. But those without years of experience may not realize the more subtle ways their garden is trying to tell them something is wrong. Here are some of those signs and what they mean, courtesy of an article by Audrey Stallsmith about BobVila.com.

Signs that something is wrong in your garden

Sure, when a plant shrinks and dies, you probably know something is wrong, but plants actually provide more information than this – including what exactly is wrong. You just need to know where to look and what certain changes mean. Here are some examples Stable forge items::

  • Yellowed leaves with green veins: A condition known as iron deficiency chlorosis, which means the soil is overly alkaline.
  • Darker foliage with a shade of bronze or purple spots: Overly acidic soil.
  • Stunted leaves with a dull appearance instead of a shiny sheen: The ground is too dry.
  • Withered and yellow leaves with rotting brown roots instead of healthy white ones: The soil is too damp.
  • Shriveled, fallen leaves, bleached foliage and flowers, and occasional burns to the center of the leaves: Too much sunlight.
  • Spindle-shaped stems that sometimes lose natural diversity or refuse to flower: Not enough sunlight.
  • Grows tall, but with few or no flowers: Plants were overfed.
  • Lower (older) leaves yellow prematurely: Plants are not fed enough and do not get enough nitrogen.
  • Yellowed or reddened distorted foliage and brown spots on their flowers after spraying: Herbicide damage.
  • Holes or “windows” in leaves: Beetles eat the plants.
  • Plants that have been completely consumed, plants that are missing parts, or plants that have large chunks removed: Plants are eaten by vertebrates such as deer, marmots and rabbits.
  • Dark sunken spots or powdery films on the leaves: There are fungi on the plant.
