Methods to be taught to skateboard as an grownup

Skateboarding has never followed a set of rules, which means that a piece about learning to skate is likely to contradict its countercultural roots in some ways. And while it encourages the growth of a global community, skating is an individual sport, which is why it has likely become a newfound adult pastime during the pandemic.

As someone who grew up skating, I was amused some recent stories written by guys who took their first trips to the skate park in their thirties to escape the loneliness of the pandemic. Seeing adults learn how to spin, ollie, and pass on ramps is a fun lens to the collective unrest in society during COVID, but I applaud anyone who jumped on a board because they correctly thought skateboarding was one adventurous endeavor.

Here’s how you can learn to skate as an adult. Just don’t be surprised if you walk into the skate park and are surrounded by kids who are shredding infinitely harder than we will ever do.

Buy a current board

A complete skateboard is made up of several parts: a taped skate deck, trucks, wheels, bearings, and possibly risers to cushion the impact of your metal trucks on the board. There are also eight bolts and lock nuts to secure your trucks to your wooden deck.

Don’t skimp on buying a real board – you really don’t want anything from it Walmart (or some other wholesaler) made of crappy wood, with trucks made of weak metal. Unlike learning how to play the drums or any other instrument, you don’t look for lower priced equipment when you start out because the cheap stuff can make it easier for you to harm yourself.

I would recommend masking yourself and go to your local skate shop and ask who works there and what should you get. But the reality is that as long as you buy a board and accessories from reputable manufacturers, you are in good shape. There are many great – even iconic – legacy companies to choose from when purchasing your board: Flip, Baker, Element, Girl, Toy Machine, and Enjoi (among so many others) are great options.

It’s the same business when it comes to trucks and bikes. Companies like Independent, Venture, and Tensor (among others) are great truck options, while wheels from Spitfire, Pig, Bones, and many other companies should get you rolling. You’ll find some crossovers when it comes to companies that make skateboards and other products – sometimes companies that make boards also make wheels, but usually companies that make trucks focus solely on that.

The general point I try is to trust the brands. Companies that make legitimate boards and products almost always sponsor professional skaters, make skate videos, and make their own clothing. You can tell a real skateboard from an imitation pretty quickly once you have familiarized yourself with authentic skate products.

Find an easy place to skate and move on from there

Don’t expect to run down the hills like an animal just yet (but if you want inspiration from someone who does just that, look no further). What you should do is find a beautiful, forgiving environment to collect your first bruises. I was lucky to grow up on a cul-de-sac where I could walk around without the fear of being flattened by a car, but you probably don’t have that luxury.

Find an open tennis or basketball court to learn how to push, kick, and ollie. You need a smooth surface that you can slide around on easily. Familiarize yourself with the feel of the board under your feet and trust your instincts when it comes to learning new tricks. Once you feel a bit more comfortable and can trust your balance, you will likely begin to develop your own taste for tricks and obstacles.

The writer Steve Rousseau, who took up skateboarding during the pandemic, recommends setting low expectations and forgiving yourself for the steep learning curve that comes with the sport.

“Just go at your own pace,” he says. “Celebrate whenever you learn something new, no matter how small or nondescript you think it is compared to ‘real’ skateboarders.”

get inspired

Much of the creative impetus in the sport comes from the energy of other skaters. Skate videos offer a variety of styles to identify with and offer great history lessons in the evolution of the sport. When it comes to finding inspiration, Rousseau puts it this way:

Just watch a lot of skate videos! There are so many different styles and vibes and ways to skate – find one that resonates with you. Don’t think of skating as a sequence of tricks that you want to learn, but rather as a style that you want to emulate.

With all that said, there really is no “right” way to learn how to bet. Just understand that you will fall a lot, but that’s part of the process, even for the most seasoned skaters. The bottom line is, if you have a board, put it on the sidewalk and go from there.

As China forges world commerce ties, the US dangers falling behind

The biggest hole in the Biden government’s otherwise encouraging efforts to better compete with China – a loophole that could undermine all other parts – is the lack of an international trade strategy.

As President Xi Jinping’s China accelerates its efforts to negotiate multilateral and bilateral trade and investment agreements around the world, both Republicans and Democrats in the US have become allergic to such agreements.

“The Chinese firmly believe in the importance of the correlation of forces, and they believe the correlation is in their favor right now,” said Stephen Hadley, former national security adviser to President George W. Bush. If the US does not change this Chinese belief, it will not regain the leverage needed to deal with Beijing.

“The most important missing element in changing this Chinese rationale is a trade strategy,” says Hadley, which could gather global allies, create American jobs and growth, and counter the escalating Chinese efforts to organize the world economy around them.

Former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright once called the US the “indispensable country” of the world, but Xi now positions China as the “indispensable economy” of the world.

By 2018, 90 countries in the world were trading twice as much with China as they did with the United States. By 2019, China surpassed the US as the world’s largest recipient of FDI. The underlying message now is that China’s market is so large, its liquidity so deep and its recovery from Covid-19 so dramatic (up 18% in the first quarter) that no sane country can resist its acceptance.

“In times of economic globalization, openness and inclusion are an unstoppable historical trend,” President Xi told the Boao Asia Forum this week. Without mentioning Washington by name, he said that “attempts to” build walls “or” decouple “are contrary to economic law and market principles. They would harm the interests of others without being of any use to yourself.”

It is far too easy to poke holes in Xi’s statement: China is still rich in market protection measures and government interventions at home and abroad are on the rise. Intellectual property theft and cybercrime continue.

But without a modern, future-oriented trade strategy, the US is entering this global crisis with one arm behind its back.

“The US and China are in a strategic competition that will determine the shape of world politics this century,” former US Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson Jr. wrote in the Wall Street Journal. “But when it comes to trade, a critical dimension of this competition, America is stepping down.”

This undermines the early successes of the emerging Biden approach to China.

First, Biden has benefited from a bipartisan consensus, rare in Congress these days, on the urgency to face the Chinese challenge.

Second, Biden has started gathering friends and allies in Asia and Europe who share his concerns about China.

In March, Biden called the first meeting of the heads of state and government of the “Quad”, in which the US, India, Australia and Japan participated, in order to balance China in the region. To address China’s far-reaching vaccine diplomacy, countries agreed to distribute 1 billion doses of vaccines by 2022.

Last week, Biden welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga as the first head of government to visit Washington. Their joint statement made no mention of China, but did promise that “free and democratic nations that work together” could act to withstand “challenges to the free and open rules-based international order”. You also spoke of ensuring cross-strait peace. This is the first mention of Taiwan by a Japanese prime minister in a joint statement with a US president since 1969.

And for the first time, on March 22, the EU imposed economic sanctions on China for human rights abuses in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, which acted alongside the US, Canada and the UK.

Third, the Biden government’s $ 1.9 trillion Covid-19 stimulus plan and its upcoming $ 2.3 trillion infrastructure-related investment will keep the US competitive through investment in human capital, physical infrastructure and advanced Improve technology.

The problem is that the same bipartisan consensus in Congress on the Chinese challenge comes with a bipartisan allergy to the kind of multilateral and bilateral trade and investment deals that are required to address Beijing’s dynamic.

Last November, China was one of 15 Asia-Pacific countries, accounting for 30% of global GDP, to sign the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). It was China’s first free trade agreement with its US allies Japan and South Korea, which formed the largest trade bloc in history.

China has also expressed an interest in joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (CPTPP). This was the trade deal that eleven countries signed after the Trump administration pulled out of the effort as one of its first acts of government.

Should the RCEP agreement enter into force, which is expected to be before January 2022, and should China be able to join the CPTPP, the international trade agreement in Asia would have largely ended and China would have won.

At the same time, China is making progress on other fronts.

In January, it signed the EU-China Comprehensive Investment Agreement (CAI), much to the dismay of incoming Biden administration officials. (The conclusion of this agreement has stalled in the European Parliament due to new Chinese sanctions against the EU.)

Whatever happens in Brussels, most European countries are eager to sign trade and investment deals with China, which became the EU’s largest trading partner for the first time last year.

The real problem lies in Washington’s lack of alternatives – fueled by the misrepresentation by both parties that globalization has worked against American interests and jobs.

When the Republican Party transformed into the Trump Party, it abandoned the kind of free trade policy that President Ronald Reagan saw as “one of the keys to our nation’s great prosperity.”

While President Barack Obama was negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership during his presidency, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton rejected the deal in 2016 after calling it the “gold standard” only three years earlier.

“Both Democrats and Republicans are now advocating ‘a trade policy for the middle class,'” writes Adam Posen of the Peterson Institute in a convincing foreign policy that exposes this approach. “In practice, this appears to mean tariffs and ‘Buy American’ programs aimed at saving jobs from unfair foreign competition.”

Instead, he writes: “Washington should conclude deals that increase competition in the United States and raise tax, labor and environmental standards. It is the self-deceptive withdrawal from the international economy that has failed American workers for the past 20 years , not globalization itself. “

While the Biden government has put its trade agenda on hold, China marches forward – closing deals and setting the standards that will shape the future.

Here is the way to decide a coloration scheme that will not really feel outdated in 2 years

Once you’ve decided to paint the interior of your home – or even just a room – the next decision is a lot tougher: choosing a color scheme. Maybe you really like canary yellow, but you worry about this type of commitment. Or maybe you mentioned that you chose to paint and everyone keeps telling you your options are white, off-white, gray, or gray, but you hate the idea of living in such a bland room.

The point is, choosing a color scheme isn’t always easy. Fortunately, there are some strategies out there to make the task less daunting. Shelby Deering breaks them down in an article for hunkers. Here’s what to know.

Types of color schemes

To quickly freshen up color theory, here are the six types of color schemes: Courtesy Deering::

  1. Monochrome: You may already be familiar with this term as it has been very popular over the past few years. A monochromatic color scheme is when variations of the same color are displayed in a room.
  2. Complementary: This color scheme contains hues that are opposite each other on the color wheel, e.g. B. Purple and Orange, and Red and Green.
  3. Analogous: These colors are right next to each other on the color wheel, e.g. B. Yellow and Orange.
  4. Triad: This color scheme consists of three shades that are equidistant from each other on the color wheel and form a triangle. An example is yellow, red, and blue.
  5. Split complementary: A split complementary scheme mixes a single color with its complementary color and then the two colors on either side – yellow and blue-purple would match red-purple, for example.
  6. Tetradic: This double complementary color scheme is made up of two complementary pairs, resulting in a rectangular shape on the color wheel – that is, green and blue match orange and red.

How to choose a color scheme

With so many options, how can you narrow your choices for a color scheme? Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Pick a starting point

There are two ways to do this: choose a wall color first, then choose furniture and decor based on the color, or vice versa. “You can draw colors from a pattern as you set your scheme,” writes Deering. “For example, a carpet or a work of art can inspire a palette for the entire room.”

Stop at three colors

Limit your color scheme to three colors so it doesn’t get too overwhelming.

Choose a color scheme that suits your decor style

When you know you are going to go for a particular style of decor – Art Deco, Rustic, Mid-Century Modern, etc. – choose colors that go with the style. “For example, if you love a farmhouse, a more neutral palette might be the best addition,” writes Deering. “Or if you’re a bohemian enthusiast, go for warm, toned down shades.”

You may want to reconsider plans to travel abroad.

This is the recommendation from the U.S. Department of State, which this week updated its list of travel advice warnings Americans not to travel overseas to include about 80% of the world’s countries.

The State Department described the risks the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic poses for travelers as “unprecedented” and said in an April 19 statement that it “strongly recommends US citizens reconsider all travel abroad.” .

The department said its recommendations will now better reflect the travel health notices issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and will take into account factors such as the availability of tests in the country and travel restrictions for U.S. residents.

This is what travel could look like after a pandemic

“We believe the updated framework will help Americans make more informed decisions about the safety of international travel,” said a State Department official. “We are closely monitoring health and safety conditions around the world and will continue to update our destination-specific information for US travelers as conditions change.”

As a result of the update, 8 out of 10 nations around the world are rated “Level 4: Do Not Travel”. More than 100 countries have been rated at Level 4, including popular destinations such as Canada, France, Mexico and the UK

The nations that have not been downgraded to level 4 are mostly in East Asia, Oceania, and parts of Africa and the Caribbean.

While many countries in the updated list of Level 4 destinations have their own restrictions on foreign travel, some allow entry by air with proof of vaccination, negative Covid test, or other criteria. For example, Americans can travel to the UK as long as they test negative within 72 hours of their arrival. You will also need to fill out the documentation and quarantine it for 10 days.

Mexico, meanwhile, allows flight arrivals and has no testing requirements, though you may be screened or temperature checked at the airport.

The country has remained popular with Americans throughout the pandemic, despite testing or evidence of recovery requirements upon return to the US

For example, the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, home to resorts like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, welcomed nearly 1 million Americans from late 2020 to February.

The Department of State’s advisory system consists of four color-coded levels: Level 1 (blue) – Use normal precautions; Level 2 (yellow) – exercise increased caution; Level 3 (orange) – rethink the trip; and level 4 (red). The latter is reserved for countries with a “higher likelihood of life-threatening risks” and US citizens are advised not to travel there or leave unless it is safe to do so.

All international targets had been classified as Level 4 at the start of the pandemic in March last year, but the State Department lifted that recommendation in August. However, currently no listed nation is rated at level 1.

New EXTRA MONEY stimulus checks are on the way in which to Individuals receiving Plus-Up funds

A NEW line of extra cash stimulus checks is on the way to Americans receiving “Plus-Up” payments.

The sixth batch of the third stimulus checks has been sent – and you may receive extra cash even if you’ve already received a payment.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans are set to receive $ 1.2 billion under the US rescue plan, what the IRS calls “plus-up” payments.

The “extra” payments are on their way to people who received cash based on 2019 tax returns in the last round of checks – but now have a new or greater amount due based on their 2020 tax returns.

So if you made less than 2019 in the past year due to the Covid pandemic – and recently filed your 2020 tax return – you might get a booster stimulus check.

“This batch includes additional ongoing perks for people who received payments based on their 2019 tax returns earlier this year but are eligible for a new or larger payment based on their recently processed 2020 tax returns,” the IRS said.

“That batch included nearly 700,000 of those ‘plus-up’ payments valued at nearly $ 1.2 billion.”

The “plus-up” payments make up some of the 161 million stimulus checks sent to Americans since March 12th.

Around $ 379 billion was spent in just under six weeks.

You may also be eligible for a “plus-up” payment if you’re a married couple filing an application together, now filed their 2020 tax return, and having a new child or dependent, Yahoo reports.

You could also get some extra cash if you’re with a married couple who filed separately last year – but you’ve since tied the knot and now filed together.

If you are a veteran receiving disability allowance and you didn’t have to file a tax return for 2019 but you have now filed one for 2020, you can get a payment too.

And you could get the extra money if you didn’t have to file a 2019 tax return and use a non-filer tool to claim your first check last year.

Almost two million more $ 1,400 stimulus checks are underway for a total of $ 3.4 billion.

It has been more than 40 days since the payments were made to the public as they are set to bring substantial relief in the pandemic’s economic battles.

In a statement, the Treasury Department said, “The sixth batch of payments began on Friday, April 16, with an official payment date on April 21. Some people used to receive direct payments into their accounts as preliminary or outstanding deposits.”

Illustration for article titled Get A Free 12 Pack Of Beer For Bitterness On TwitterGraphic: Hop Valley Brewing Company

Sure, there is all of this local feel-good news about how the pandemic “got the best out of people” and while it may at times, many people still feel pretty bitter about the whole thing. If you shared your bitterness on Twitter, you may have gained (or lost) some followers, but more importantly, you may have grabbed a free beer. Here’s what to know.

How to get free beer

The process is pretty straightforward. Go to first IBU-O-METER.com and send your twitter handle. Then the Hop Valley Brewing Company (which sponsors this giveaway) generates an IBU score (that would be Internet Bitterness Units here) based on how bitter you’ve been on Twitter lately.

Regardless of your score, however, you’ll get a discount on a free 12-pack of any of four varieties of Hop Valley IPAs (which, in context, are supposed to be less bitter than regular IPAs). If you are unfamiliar with the brand, this is a good idea to use Beer finder Tool to find a place near you that sells it.

Basically, you buy a 12 pack of beer and then send your receipt through Hop Valley for a refund, which is done through PayPal or Venmo. Beer purchases must be made by May 31, 2021 and your receipt must be submitted by June 7, 2021.

G / O Media can receive a commission

How exactly are your tweets rated for bitterness?

So who – or what – will judge your bitterness? Here is an explanation from an email sent by Hop Valley Brewing Company to Lifehacker:

Technically, we can use a complex machine learning algorithm to analyze the text found in your tweets and determine the overall sentiment (positive, negative, or neutral) based on a pre-trained set of historical data. The IBU-O-Meter then assigns a score (0-100) based on the ratio of positive and negative tweets in total (maximum 100). In less technical terms, you send your handle, computer magic happens and evaluates your tweets, then assign you an IBU score.

The fine print

Of course, you must be at least 21 years old to participate and there is a limit of one discount per phone number. Here are the rest of them Terms and Conditions. Some states have slightly different rules, so be sure to check them out.

President Joe Biden on Saturday recognized the murder of 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman forces at the beginning of the 20th century as genocide, a historic, if largely symbolic, move that is likely to weigh on already strained relations with Turkey.

Biden’s statement is a major break with previous US administrations who avoided calling the atrocities genocide because of concerns about alienating Turkey, a key NATO ally and influential power in the Middle East. Turkey has denied that the murders were genocide.

“Every year on that day we remember the lives of all those who died during the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman era, and we re-commit ourselves to preventing such an atrocity from ever occurring again,” Biden said in one Declaration on the Remembrance Day of the Armenian Genocide.

As a candidate, Biden vowed last year to make this declaration, which is widely supported by human rights groups and Armenians. The Trump administration failed to recognize the events as genocide and instead labeled them “mass atrocities”.

After the arrest of Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople – now known as Istanbul – by Ottoman authorities, around 1.5 million Armenians were killed in the events known as Meds Yeghern from 1915 to 1923.

“A world that is not tainted by the daily evils of bigotry and intolerance, where human rights are respected and where all people are able to live their lives in dignity and safety,” said Biden. “Let us renew our common determination to prevent future atrocities from occurring anywhere in the world. And let us seek healing and reconciliation for all people of the world.”

The Turkish Foreign Ministry said Saturday that the Biden government’s statement would “open a deep wound that is undermining our mutual trust and friendship”.

Biden and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed in a phone call on Friday to hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit in June.

“It is an important day for all Armenians. Following the resolutions of the US Congress of 2019, President Biden honored the memory of the victims of the Armenian genocide,” Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wrote in a tweet on Saturday.

“The US has again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the protection of human rights and universal values,” Pashinyan wrote.

Read the full White House statement:

Every year on this day, we remember the lives of all those who died in the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman era, and we re-commit ourselves to preventing such an atrocity from ever occurring again. From April 24, 1915, with the arrest of Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople by the Ottoman authorities, one and a half million Armenians were deported, massacred or marched to their deaths in an extermination campaign. We honor the victims of the Meds Yeghern so that the horrors of what happened are never lost in history. And we remember that we are always vigilant against the corrosive influence of hate in all its forms.

Most of the survivors were forced to find new homes and new lives around the world, including the United States. With strength and resilience, the Armenian people survived and rebuilt their community. Over the decades, Armenian immigrants have enriched the United States in countless ways, but they have never forgotten the tragic story that brought so many of their ancestors to our coast. We honor their story. We see this pain. We confirm the story. We’re not doing this to blame, but to make sure what happened is never repeated.

When we mourn today for what has been lost, we also turn to the future – the world we want to build for our children. A world that is not tainted by the daily evils of bigotry and intolerance, where human rights are respected and where all people are able to live their lives in dignity and safety. Let’s renew our shared resolve to prevent future atrocities from occurring anywhere in the world. And let us seek healing and reconciliation for all people in the world.

The American people honor all those Armenians who were killed in the genocide that began 106 years ago today.

Fear of failure makes sense. We have all experienced failure at some point, found it wasn’t great, and are concerned that we will feel that way again. But our brains are hard to please. Because next to that Fear of failureMany people also fear success.

While it may sound ridiculous, being afraid of success is very real – although it’s not always obvious. In other words, you may be afraid of success and not even notice it (or group it with fear of failure). Ideally, we want to avoid this type of stress and anxiety. Here are some tips for identifying and treating fear of success.

What is fear of success?

First of all, it is important to remember that you are not afraid of success itself, but of the consequences of success. Kendra Cherry explains the concept in an article for Verywell Mind::

Fear of success includes fear of success, often to the point where people sabotage themselves … Since expectations of success are often based on the idea that achieving your goals will be sacrifices or losses, it is Perhaps unsurprisingly, people can be wary of what success could ultimately cost them.

How to recognize a fear of success

According to an article from 2018 Fear of success, published in the University Journal of Educational Research, can take the following forms:

  • Worry about whether your success could change your relationships with important people in your life
  • You are concerned about the new responsibilities that may come with your success
  • Afraid that your life will get more complicated and out of control
  • You are concerned about being in a position where you are more likely to receive negative comments and feedback – both in general and on a larger scale

G / O Media can receive a commission

How to deal with your fear of success

Everyone will react to success – and their fear of it – in different ways. So it’s about figuring out what works best for you. If the common stress-reducing techniques like meditation, deep breathing, relaxation, journaling, etc. work for you, then definitely give them a try.

But for everyone else, these methods can be of greater use:

Refreshing negative beliefs

Instead of thinking about success as you are now (in a way that challenges you), rethink how you look at performance. Here’s Cherry again to explain:

Pay attention to some of the negative beliefs you may have about your performance.

Do you associate success with negative results? Worried about what other people might be thinking? Once you become more aware of these negative thought patterns, you can work on replacing them with more positive ones.

Get used to tolerating discomfort

Being able to tolerate discomfort is not only a skill in managing the fear of success, but a variety of other uncomfortable feelings and scenarios as well. Per cherry:

Since fear of achievement can lead to avoidance behaviors, one way to deal with it is to improve your exercise tolerance skills. If you experience uncomfortable or uncomfortable feelings, work on gradually learning to sit with those feelings instead of running away from them.

Like everything else, this mentality may take a bit of getting used to, but gradually you will get used to the discomfort and be able to get hold of it instead of being held back by the fear of experiencing it.

The now 53-year-old presenter of The Murder Squad podcast was first introduced to the case in 1994 when he was hired as an investigator for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. At the time, the perpetrator was identified in those files as the East Area Rapist. Fortunately, due to a DNA breakthrough in 2001, it was found that the crimes of Visalia Ransacker, East Area Rapist, Diamond Knot Killer, and Original Night Stalker were actually committed by a man who was later renamed the Golden State Killer.

After years of collecting DNA evidence related to these unsolved crimes, Holes contacted the genealogist Barbara Rae-Venter. Through this genealogist, a successful genetic profile and pedigree was used for the arrest of DeAngelo.
