This really saves you cash in comparison with bathroom paper costs

Shopping for toilet paper shouldn’t be as complicated or expensive as it is. Brands love to splatter their packaging with claims that one of their “Mega Rolls“Corresponds to 12 or 18” normal rolls “but is less direct about how much paper they actually give you. This makes it almost impossible to compare prices from brand to brand – or even within a brand’s range.

That, of course, is the whole point. When faced with dozens of packages of functionally identical products promoting similar (but also conflicting) marketing claims, you are likely to give up trying to make an informed decision and just grab something at random. Brands know this, so they put as many options on the shelves as possible in the hopes that overwhelmed customers grab one of them. Fortunately, it’s possible to compare toilet paper prices – all you have to do is do a little math.

How to break down the price

First, figure out the total area for each option you are considering. Most brands list it on their packaging, but an increasing number don’t. When there are no more square feet, take the number of sheets per roll and multiply it by the total number of rolls to get the total number of sheets in the package. These numbers are small and difficult to read, but at least one of them will be there.

From here you can split the price in either dollars per unit or units per dollar. For dollars per unit, divide the package price by the total area (or total area). For units per dollar, divide the total area (or total area) by the package price. To save money, you want to minimize the dollars per unit or maximize the units per dollar. You can use any of these calculations that you prefer, but you need to use the same formula consistently to keep the comparisons accurate.

Don’t trust the math of the store

Unfortunately, you have to do these calculations yourself because Unit prices on the shelves are notoriously unreliable. For example, in this listing on the local Safeway website, the price is broken down by “number” but it does not state what a “number” is (note mine):

A screenshot of a Safeway listing for Quilted Northern Ultra Plush toilet paper. The unit price is $ 1.11 per count and the total price is $ 19.99. The unit price is underlined in red with a Screenshot: AA Newton

G / O Media can receive a commission

A quick check shows that this is the price per roll: 1.11 x 18 rolls per pack = $ 19.98. (Thanks for the roundup, folks!) With most competitors quoting unit prices in the range of $ 3 to $ 4 per 100 square feet, the Quilted Northern looks like a steal – until you find that $ 1.11 per roll about $ 3.70 per roll makes 100 square feet.

In-store unit prices can also be wrong, as in this case claiming that a $ 20.99 packet of toilet paper is $ 116.61 per 100 square feet (note mine):

A Safeway list for Charmin Ultra Soft toilet paper. Unit price is $ 116.61 / 100 square feet and the total price is $ 20.99. Both prices are underlined in red Screenshot: AA Newton

According to the label, this package contains 516 square feet of paper. At $ 20.99 for the package, this equates to $ 0.04 per square foot, or about $ 4.00 per 100 square feet. I bet $ 116.61 is the wholesale price, or what the store will pay for a case of this particular item.

Is toilet paper math a huge pain in the ass? Yes unbelievable! Unfortunately, this is the only way to cut through the jungle of shit and find out how much you’re actually paying for toilet paper. When you’ve found a brand you like, at a price you can tolerate, replenish it when it goes on sale. You’ll never have to do the math again – at least until you change the size of your rolls.

The combination of Earth Day and the spring pandemic outbreak could leave you looking for ways to get outside, connect with nature, and plant new life. If you’re like me (a person who has no evidence of a green thumb) you need all the help you can get keeping these plants alive. Fortunately, there are some simple hacks you can use to set up your garden for success right from the start.

TikToker The crispy city dwellerOn the one hand, according to the “hill culture method”, one swears to prepare his garden beds before planting. Here’s how to make a hill bed and how to put up a leg in the horticultural department.

What are Hugel beds?

Hill beds follow the hill culture planting method. You begin by building a mound from a pile of old wood buried underground to mimic the natural growth environment for the plants in the wild. The Permaculture Research Center explains the process in detail the natural process that the method tries to recreate:

“Wood waste (and other debris) that falls on the forest floor can easily become spongy, absorbing rain and slowly releasing it into the surrounding soil, making that moisture available to nearby plants.”

Mimicking this type of environment in your garden should, in theory, help plants thrive and save you from the hard work that comes with it.

Raised beds require less work

If you’re creating sunken garden beds, there are several steps to follow when the land is tilled to make it more hospitable to new plants. Planting prep includes killing current vegetation, turning the soil by digging at least a foot, and much more. With a raised boxYou can just use fresh soil and skip digging and tilling altogether.

Reuse your old wood

Hunt down old wood before you put it in the dirt. You can either look for sticks, logs, and dead leaves (and other items you might toss in a compost heap) or reuse old wood that you have lying around.

The best wood for this job will rot a bit. Newer wood can interfere with this Nitrogen content in the soil, Manipulating the natural balance needed for plant growth. The rotting wood, on the other hand, supplies the soil with nutrients and contributes to its conservation proper drainageThis will give you the perfect amount of moisture to cultivate plant growth. Sens Elizabeth Warren, Tina Smith and Marco Rubio on Thursday reintroduced two laws to secure the U.S. drug supply chain by reducing reliance on China and other nations for the supply of life-saving drugs and vaccines.

The Food and Drug Administration estimates that 80% of manufacturers who make drug ingredients are based outside of the United States, many of them in China and India. Although the agency has closely monitored the supply chain, it does not have a clear understanding of where drug components are made.

There was a shortage of drugs to treat Covid-19 patients in the US during the pandemic as demand increased but supply was disrupted due to factory closures and delays in shipping.

“In order to overcome the current COVID-19 crisis and better equip the USA against future pandemics, we must increase our country’s production capacity.” Warren, D-Mass., Said. “Our bill will end our over-reliance on foreign countries and give us the tools we need to create the critical medicines that millions of Americans depend on here at home.”

Warren and Smith, D-Minn., First introduced the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Defense and Improvement Act in June 2020.

The bill requires the Food and Drug Administration Commissioner and Secretary of Defense to establish a confidential list of “critical drugs”, allocate $ 5 billion to invest in domestic manufacturing, and require drug manufacturers to report the source of their materials to the FDA.

Senators Warren and Rubio, R-Fla., Are also improving legislation first introduced last year to order the Federal Trade Commission and Treasury Department to conduct a study of the US Foreign Investment Committee.

“COVID-19 has made it painfully clear that we need to pass meaningful laws to help rebuild our country’s medical manufacturing and pharmaceuticals sectors,” said Rubio.

The bill is designed to understand how foreign direct investment from overseas affects the country’s ability to manufacture medicines, as well as US genome sequencing and DNA storage.

President Joe Biden’s American Jobs Act calls for $ 30 billion in investment to protect Americans from future pandemics. This includes efforts to bring pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing back to the United States

The legislator fears that foreign manufacturers could restrict the supply of critical pharmaceutical components or even stop them altogether if geopolitical tensions increase. Bad actors could manipulate drugs to make them ineffective or to arm them.

Your state might secretly owe you cash, property, or different worthwhile merchandise – and it takes lower than 2 minutes to overview

Your state might secretly owe you cash, property, or different worthwhile merchandise – and it takes lower than 2 minutes to overview

STATES may secretly owe you money, checks, property, and other valuable items – which ended up in the largest treasure trove in the United States.

Have you ever misplaced, lost or never received something? Because your local government agency may be holding on to items that you own that run into thousands of dollars.

2

Your state could hold onto your lost belongings, which add up to thousands of dollars

When a government office business cannot find the rightful owner after a period of time, items are sent to a state unclaimed real estate office.

This includes valuables such as a refund or cash settlement, a money order, a dormant bank account, wages, a dividend, or stocks and bonds, and insurance benefits.

In addition to ancillary costs, an unpaid bank check, the contents of an abandoned safe deposit box, jewelry and coins, this treasury of misplaced items is guarded by the State Office until the owner claims it.

New York has a whopping $ 16.5 billion in misplaced valuables, while California is just behind with $ 10.2 billion left in lost property.

The sunny state of Florida returned a $ 328 million mammoth to applicants last year – so it’s definitely worth checking out.

In 2019, the average claim paid was $ 1,780, according to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators.

So how can you check to see if there are lost and found items?

If you go to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators website, you can search for unclaimed property in any state, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

Your state might secretly owe you cash, property, or different worthwhile merchandise – and it takes lower than 2 minutes to overview

2

In most states, claims can be made online or by mailPhoto credit: Getty

The two-minute task requires you to select your provincial state on Unclaimed.org, which will then be redirected to the individual unclaimed property page for the selected state.

Then, if you enter in some brief contact information, you can delve deep into your forgotten assets that may have gone astray.

And if you think you owe some money, you can search MissingMoney.com in 39 states or FindMyFunds.com in 25 states and the District of Columbia.

You can then file a claim with your state to get your belongings back.

Depending on which state you live in, claims can be submitted online or by mail and will require proof of identity.

This could be a copy of your photo ID, a copy of your Social Security card, your tax identification number, or documentation showing that it is your missing property.

Dexter has returned to his true nature in Revival Teaser

Michael C. Halls eight years on “Dexter”

If there’s one thing we know about Dexter’s true nature, it’s that he loves to murder.

Showtime has released a brief teaser for the upcoming Dexter revival, offering both a nod to the show’s much-maligned original Lumberjack ending and a promise of what’s to come. And what’s to come is likely to be a lot of murder.

The teaser is just a picture of an ax hitting a tree stump with a fire burning in the background. In voice-over, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) says: “There really is nothing better than to return to nature … to my nature.”

Again he means murder. Sure, Dexter only kills people who are very bad, but we still can’t forget that this man is a serial killer that we all wanted to love. Things were strange in 2006 and they could be stranger now!

Our biggest question (well, one of them) is whether or not this serial killer was really just a lumberjack since the show ended in 2013. We thought it wasn’t showrunner based Clyde Phillips The new series will have “no resemblance” to the original finale, but someone out here is still chopping wood.

Individuals who get Covid between vaccinations might obtain a second dose after they get better

The director of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci, speaks to reporters in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House in Washington, DC on April 13, 2021.

People who contract the coronavirus between Covid-19 vaccinations can get their second dose after recovering from the disease and are no longer considered contagious, White House chief medical officer Dr. Anthony Fauci, on Thursday.

Pfizer and Moderna’s Covid vaccines require two doses three to four weeks apart. Both vaccines are about 95% effective against the virus, but that strong protection doesn’t kick in until two weeks after the second dose, officials say.

Some people have reported that Covid was diagnosed after the first vaccine shot and before the second vaccine. In that case, Fauci said, they can get their second dose after they recover from the disease and meet the isolation criteria.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who have had Covid-19 may be around others after at least 10 days, 24 hours without a fever, and when other symptoms, if any, improve.

Fauci also noted that a small percentage of fully vaccinated people will continue to develop Covid-19 – so-called “breakthrough cases”. CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said Monday that U.S. health officials had confirmed fewer than 6,000 cases of Covid-19 from 84 million Americans with full protection against the virus.

Fauci said officials do not yet understand the risk of developing persistent symptoms, also known as “long covid,” after a breakthrough post-vaccination.

The way to Monitor Your Stress Stage with a Fitbit

The way to Monitor Your Stress Stage with a Fitbit

We all know that Fitbit smartwatches track your daily physical activity, but they can now help you track your stress levels too. Fitbit recently announced the introduction of Fitbit Sense stress management tracking for Fitbit Versa 3, Versa 2, Luxe, Charge 4 and Inspire 2.

These Fitbit devices now calculate a daily stress management score based on a variety of factors, including your heart rate, physical activity, and sleep data. The Fitbit Sense also tracks electrodermal activity (EDA) to look for “fight or flight” responses.

Anyone using any of the supported Fitbit devices can check their daily stress score on the Dashboard page of the Fitbit app. The score ranges from 1 to 100 – but note that the number is not a measure of how “stressed” you are per se. Rather, a higher score means that you are doing more to relieve your daily stress – e. B. getting enough (but not too much) daily physical activity, getting enough sleep every night, and using top-notch mindfulness exercises from Fitbit.

Free users see their daily totals, while Fitbit Premium subscribers get a more detailed breakdown of the criteria being tracked, which shows you whether you need more sleep or need to increase your time at the gym to get these stress-reducing hormones pumping.

G / O Media can receive a commission

A perfect score doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t feel stressed or anxious. It simply means that your body is showing fewer signs of physical stress, and therefore fewer stress-inducing reactions occur.

However, the Fitbit app’s stress management menu also has a check-in option that allows you to take some notes on how you felt that day. How to use it:

  1. In the Fitbit app, tap “Coping with stress.”
  2. Scroll down and tap “How do you feel?” under the Reflections section.
  3. Choose the mood that best suits your day.
  4. Tap “Log reflection” to save your selection.

These check-ins are optional and will not be included in your daily stress management score. There are only five options – from very stressed to very calm – so there is not much room for differentiated feedback. However, recording your feelings helps correlate your subjective experience with the data your Fitbit is collecting. Hopefully, with all of this information on hand, you will find peace of mind, rather than just excitement, as you try playing a different app to improve your results.

The totally different USDA sorts of lamb and mutton and what they imply

The totally different USDA sorts of lamb and mutton and what they imply

Illustration for article titled The Different USDA Varieties of Lamb and Mutton and What They MeanPhoto: Foxys Forest Manufacture (Shutterstock)

Lamb has something extraordinarily meaty about it. I don’t mean it has a lot of meat on its bones – although it can. I mean the experience of eating it is what eating meat should feel like. It’s often on a bone and has a strong, deep taste that is exactly the opposite of that of a sterile little chicken fillet.

Like beefNot all lambs are created equal, but the types of lamb you see in the supermarket or in the market vary less. According to meatscience.org, “[m]Ore as 90 percent of lamb in the US is rated USDA Prime or Choice. “However, there are three other classes – Good, Useful, and Eliminate. Similar to beef, the quality a lamb receives has a lot to do with the amount of fat present, although age and muscle thickness also affect its rating.

Prime

Meat from young lambs (between six and eight weeks old) that is “consistently muscular” with flank fat strips that range from “small” to “plentiful” is considered prime. But as the sheep get older, the need for fat increases. An older lamb needs “modest” to “abundant” stripes to be considered Prime. An annual mutton must have at least moderate fat streaks.

As soon as the sheep age in “mutton area” (older than 20 months), the meat can no longer be classified as prime, regardless of how high-fat it is. (See this graphic from USDA for a visual representation.) All prime lamb cuts are tender, either due to their youth and / or the amount of fat present, but I still happily give the meat one over at the store and choose the chops or steaks with the most marbling .

choice

Young lamb with “trace” or “small” amounts of flank fat strips is considered an option, but the amount of fat needed to maintain this rating increases as the lamb ages. If you buy mutton from a grocery store or butcher, it is most likely Choice quality, which means it has a “modest” to “ample” level of flank fat streak. Since you can’t know exactly how old the sheep were, it’s a good idea to look for the fat and choose cuts with the most streaks or marbling.

G / O Media can receive a commission

Well

Good quality lamb is “consistently slightly thinly muscled” and, depending on the age of the animal, can range from “practically without” flank fat strips to a “moderate” amount. (Again, this graphic is really helpful.) You will most likely not come across whole pieces of lamb marked “good” as this meat is usually ground or made into other products.

Utility and cull

These two are, so to speak, the bottom of the sheep barrel. The utility can be “streak free” (assuming the lamb is young), and mutton with this rating can be “practically empty” or have as much as a “modest” amount of flank fat strips. “Club” refers to meat that does not meet even these meager qualifications. All utility and cull rated meat is made into other products, although I can’t tell you which type goes for which products. (I bet some are making their way into the dog food.)

The ‘strongest tidal turbine on the planet’ is getting ready for operation

The ‘strongest tidal turbine on the planet’ is getting ready for operation

From the Scottish port of Dundee a tidal turbine with a weight of 680 tons, which is described as “the most powerful in the world”, was launched. This is another significant step in the development of the UK marine energy sector.

In an announcement on Thursday, Scottish company Orbital Marine Power announced that its 2 megawatt (MW) turbine, the Orbital O2, is now to be towed to the Orkney Islands, an archipelago north of mainland Scotland, for commissioning.

The turbine will then be connected to the Orkney-based European Marine Energy Center, where it will be commissioned.

Construction work for the 74-meter-long O2 with 10-meter blades began in the second half of 2019. According to Orbital Marine Power, the start was “the completion of the turbine construction”.

According to the company, the turbine can produce enough electricity to meet the needs of around 2,000 UK households a year. Andrew Scott, CEO of Orbital, described the start as a “major milestone” for his company.

Orbital Marine Power’s announcement comes a day after Mocean Energy, also based in Scotland, announced that its wave energy prototype Blue X will conduct sea trials at an EMEC test site next month before deploying it elsewhere this summer . The machine weighs 38 tons and is 20 meters long.

The UK has miles of coastline and a number of projects and initiatives related to ocean energy.

For example, earlier this month it was announced that a year-long research project examining the potential of tidal, wave and swim wind technology has received support from Marine-i, a program that focuses on innovation in areas such as ocean energy .

The project is based on the Isles of Scilly, an archipelago off the south west coast of England led by Isles of Scilly Community Venture, Planet A Energy and Waves4Power.

And back in March, the Port Authority of London launched trials of tidal energy technology on a stretch of the Thames, a move that could ultimately help decarbonise operations associated with the river.

While interest in marine energy systems appears to be growing, the current footprint of the industry and its technologies remains small.

Recent figures from Ocean Energy Europe show that only 260 kilowatts (kW) of tidal power capacity was added in Europe last year, while only 200 kW of wave power was installed.

According to the WindEurope industry association, 14.7 gigawatts (GW) of wind energy capacity were installed in Europe in 2020.

Looking ahead, the European Commission wants the capacity of marine energy technologies to reach 100 MW by 2025 and around 1 GW by 2030.
