GameStop shares fell barely in risky premarket buying and selling after falling 72% in 2 days

GameStop shares fell 1.3% in premarket trading on Wednesday as traders waited to see if the short squeeze fueled by retail investors on Reddit could be revived.

The stock was down more than 11% on Wednesday morning but was in the black just after 5 a.m. It was down three hours later, trading at $ 88.96.

The stationary video game retailer’s shares rose 1,625% in January and only rose 400% last week when traders, led by Reddit thread WallStreetBets, piled into the stock.

But the momentum collapsed earlier this week. Gamestop stock fell 60% on Tuesday and has lost more than 70% of its value since Friday.

Keith Gill, DeepF —— Value of AKA Reddit, announced Tuesday that despite a loss of $ 13 million that day, it still hasn’t sold.

AMC Entertainment, another sharply shortened stock that Reddit traders were also targeting, gained 3% in premarket trading.

Robinhood and other retail apps continue to restrict purchases of a collection of stocks tracked by the Reddit thread. Many Wall Street hedge funds began short covering late last week after suffering significant losses.

Short selling is a strategy in which investors borrow shares of a stock at a certain price, with the expectation that the market value will drop below that level when it is time to pay for the borrowed shares.

Delaying the second dose of AstraZeneca vaccine works, a research reveals

LONDON – The UK’s decision to postpone AstraZeneca University Oxford’s second shot of coronavirus vaccine has proven to be an effective strategy, according to a new study.

Oxford researchers found that the Covid vaccine was 76% effective in preventing symptomatic infection for three months after a single dose, and that the rate of effectiveness increased with a longer interval between the first and second dose.

Delaying the second dose means more people can get their first vaccines sooner as it eases supplies.

“The effectiveness of the vaccine after a single standard dose of the vaccine from the 22nd to the 90th day post-vaccination was 76% … and the modeled analysis showed that protection did not deteriorate during this initial 3 month period,” noted the Study notes. It was preprinted Tuesday and is currently being reviewed in The Lancet Medical Journal.

The effectiveness rate increased to 82.4% when at least 12 weeks were before the second dose. When the second dose was given less than six weeks after the first, the rate of effectiveness was 54.9%.

“These analyzes show that greater vaccine effectiveness is achieved with a longer interval between the first and second dose and that a single dose of vaccine is highly effective in the first 90 days, which further supports current policy,” the report said .

The UK’s current strategy is to vaccinate as many people as possible with a single dose first and delay the second dose for up to 12 weeks. The idea is that a first dose will provide at least some of the protection and allow more people to have access to the vaccines while they are on a limited basis.

The decision to delay the administration of a second booster dose has sparked controversy, with some questioning whether it might reduce the vaccine’s effectiveness in preventing severe Covid infection.

However, the UK Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization and health experts supported the approach. The UK is also delaying the second dose of Pfizer BioNTech vaccine, a move vaccine makers have warned about, arguing that there is no data to support a delay.

The study also provided key data on whether the vaccine reduced transmission of the virus, a previously unknown and crucial question for policy makers looking to lift measures to lock down the economy.

Based on weekly swabs from volunteers in the UK study, a 67% reduction in transmission was found after the first dose of the vaccine.

Effective strategy

This latest study supports the UK Government’s decision and concludes that vaccination programs “aiming to vaccinate a large proportion of the population with a single dose, with a second dose given after a period of three months, are an effective strategy to reduce disease and may be the optimum for pandemic vaccine introduction when supply is limited in the short term. “

The study used additional data from ongoing clinical trials of the vaccine. A separate announcement from AstraZeneca on Wednesday showed that the vaccine also prevented serious illness from Covid, with no serious cases and no hospital stays more than 22 days after the first dose.

The vaccine was approved by the UK Medicines Agency on December 30th and, as a shot made in the UK, makes up most of the country’s previously hailed successful vaccination program.

The UK is well on its way to having its four top priority groups (over 70s, residents and workers in old people’s homes, frontline health and social workers and the clinically extremely vulnerable) vaccinated with a total of around 15 million people by mid-February to have .

By February 1, over 9.6 million people had received a first dose of the vaccine, and just under 500,000 had received two doses, according to government figures.

Andrew Pollard, chief investigator for the vaccine study at Oxford and co-author of the study, said, “This new data provides an important review of the interim data used by more than 25 regulatory agencies, including MHRA and EMA, to grant vaccine emergency approval.”

“It also supports the policy recommendation of the Joint Vaccination and Immunization Committee for a 12-week prime-boost interval as it seeks the optimal approach to initiation and assures us that people will be protected before 22 days after a single are dose of the vaccine. “

The researchers also hope to release data on the new variants in the coming days and expect the results to be broadly similar to those already reported by other vaccine developers: that the current vaccines are effective against mutations in the virus.

Germany, France and Sweden currently do not recommend the AstraZeneca vaccine for people over 65 because of insufficient study data on this age group. However, the vaccine maker and the UK government have defended the vaccine, saying the available data shows it is safe and effective. Further analyzes will follow shortly.

Use your Apple Watch to unlock your iPhone when carrying a face masks

0

With Apple’s iOS 13.5 update, your iPhone was able to switch to your secondary authentication method faster when trying to use face recognition with a face mask. However, it is still a tedious process that you have to go through every time you want to unlock your iPhone. iOS 14.5 addresses this issue by adding a new auto-unlock option for those who also own an Apple Watch. I do, and it’s too good a feature to wait for.

I say “wait for” because iOS 14.5 is technically not yet available to the public. Apple is testing the update as part of a developer beta – that wonderful phrase that suggests you might have a buggy experience slapping it on your iPhone right now. I go back and forth here; I love being able to access the latest features, but a sluggish or otherwise fussy iPhone – especially if it’s my primary device – isn’t the best experience.

Still, in these pandemic times, having to tap my iPhone after getting used to the wonderful convenience of Face ID isn’t much fun either. So much so that I think I’ll be installing the iOS 14.5 beta. What’s the worst that could happen?

If you’d like to join me, here’s how to get into this developer beta. First, create a backup of your iPhone, regardless of whether you send it to iCloud (via Settings> Your Apple ID> iCloud> iCloud Backup) or connect your iPhone to a computer and do a manual backup. This is important because you want to be able to revert to your normal operating system if the beta is too buggy for your liking.

Next, open Safari on your iPhone and navigate to Beta profiles. In the box for the beta version of iOS 14.5, tap on “Download” and don’t let the warning screen get in your way:

When your iPhone prompts you to download a configuration profile to your device, tap “Enable.” When you’re done, close Safari and open yours the settings App. Tap on General> Profilewhere to find the profile you just downloaded. Tap on it, then tap To install in the upper right corner. You will eventually be asked to restart your iPhone as part of the installation process. Do that.

not definedScreenshot: David Murphy

Once your iPhone is back up, tap the settings again and then General> Software update. You should now be able to download the iOS 14.5 Developer Beta (if the download has not started yet).

not definedScreenshot: David Murphy

Once that’s done, the new feature to unlock Apple Watch can be found in Settings> Face ID & Passcode. However, you’ll also need to repeat the same steps to install the watchOS 7.4 Developer Beta (update your Apple Watch as usual at the end instead of going to the “Software Update” section of your iPhone).

Don’t assume this handy feature will work every time you use your iPhone while wearing your Apple Watch. Developed for Living in a Pandemic Function, your iPhone must recognize that you are wearing a face mask. If this is the case and you are also wearing your (passcode-enabled and unlocked) Apple Watch, your iPhone will be unlocked automatically. Unless you are wearing a mask, you have to unlock your iPhone the old fashioned way.

NYE. Inauguration.” and then added, “Amazing. Really amazing. #Macha.” It also contained a heart emoji.

How do I grow to be a foster dad or mum?

0

If it was a pre-pandemic struggle to find enough adults willing and able to care for the 400,000+ children in foster care in the United States, it is not surprising and since life as we knew it got epically more difficult.

The structure of foster parenting, like everything else during the pandemic, looks very different – court hearings have been postponed time and again, visits to biological family members have been stalled, and visits from social workers have become virtual. Even with these precautionary measures in place, adding another child to your home poses an increased risk of exposure, and many foster parents who were already licensed and active when the coronavirus emerged were reluctant to do new internships, either because they were immunocompromised themselves are or are concerned about the health of elderly family members or other people in the home.

However, the need for foster parents is not diminishing. indeed, as two people in the child welfare system recently said New York Times::

“If you’ve ever been moved and able to serve children in need, now is the time to get involved,” said Rita Soronen, President and CEO of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

“It’s intimidating to get involved, but once you get trained and get some experience you realize it’s absolutely doable,” said Chastity [Gomez, a foster parent in Colorado]. “The impact you can have on these children’s lives is incredible.”

Here are some things to keep in mind if you want to take the plunge into foster parenting at these most unusual times.

Started

As a former foster parent, I can tell you that the child support system in the United States is something of a maze. Its rules, regulations, and requirements can vary widely from state to state, and sometimes even from county to county. To get started, you must first identify the department in your state that manages the child welfare system. This could be your state’s Human Services department, or a Labor and Family Services department, or a child safety department – or whatever your state calls it.

The The US Department of Health maintains a directory This will keep you moving in the right direction depending on where you live. For example, in my home state of Pennsylvania, there is a nationwide “Adoption and Persistence Network” that is administered by the Human Services Department. When my husband and I started looking into the licensing process, I called this network and asked for help. They sent me a list of approved nursing and adoptive agencies in my area, which we then researched one by one.

They must also be licensed through an agency, and choosing the right agency is one of the first important decisions you make as a potential foster parent – especially during this difficult and uncertain time. Call some agencies and speak to the director or other manager about the services they provide and the agency’s overall mission or philosophy. Not only do you want to make sure that the office is conveniently located, but that the case workers are knowledgeable, responsive, and that the agency’s values align with your own. As David Dodge writes for The Times:

The culture and quality of the agencies are very different, said Soronen. It is therefore a good idea to speak to more than one before making decisions. Some private, religion-based agencies do not work with LGBTQ people, individuals, unmarried couples, or parents of different faiths. For those interested in working without such restrictions, this is the Human rights campaign, A national LGBTQ advocacy group maintains a directory as part of theirs All children – all families Project.

Illustration for article titled How To Be Foster Parents

Preparation is everything

The licensing process for foster parents itself is quite extensive – and rightly so. For obvious reasons, it’s incredibly important for agencies to conduct thorough background checks on potential foster parents and gather information about their mental health, financial stability, and the safety of their home. The amount of training required, most of which is currently likely to be virtual, will vary depending on your agency, but will likely range from 10 to 30 hours initially, with additional annual training requirements thereafter.

My husband and I took training on all sorts of topics, from filling in the huge pile of papers we were given to parenting through a therapeutic relationship model. Whatever is offered by your agency, I suggest taking as much of it as possible. You get a license with the essentials, but being licensed and being ready is not the same thing. Your agency will likely have other suggestions for videos and articles or books to read that can better prepare you for caring for a foster child.

Here are a few books I would like to suggest to get you started:

You should also dive into local and national foster parent support groups. Since most of your training is likely to be virtual, you will not be able to interact with other potential foster parents as usual during your training. Ask your agency for help in contacting other local families via zoom, text, or email. Look for foster parenting communities on social media – Facebook is a good place to start. Join the groups and take some time to read previous posts and comments. You will find an abundance of experiences and wisdom to learn from.

Have a backup plan

Even at the best of times, foster parents need to take breaks to have a few hours alone for errands or a weekend for a wedding (you know, as soon as we can do things like that again). Be sure to ask your agency about guidelines on who else can babysit the children in your care, as there are often different requirements for part of the day or an overnight visit. Ask your agency about (very short-term) care options. You may also be able to team up with another foster family in your agency to swap follow-up care with each other if necessary – your own Provisional Foster Family.

Given the times we live in, you should also be wondering what policies and procedures the agency has put in place to fight the pandemic – for example, what happens if you contract the virus and get too sick to care for the kids in To take care of your home at home? What do you do and who do you notify if any of the children in your care have symptoms of COVID-19? If you have clear expectations about how to deal with someone in your home who is getting sick, you can at least relieve one stressor in that case.

Also, to avoid surprises in the future, you should be familiar with how things like house calls from clerks and visits to biological family members are currently being handled and how they will be coordinated once the pandemic is under control.

Jack Ma’s pressure with Beijing casts shadows over Alibaba’s future

GUANGZHOU, China – Jack Ma, Alibaba’s high profile founder, appears to be on the wrong side of the Chinese government, sparking a chain of events that has increased regulatory scrutiny over the e-commerce giant and cast uncertainty about its future.

Even after Alibaba reported earnings for the December quarter that were above expectations, analysts and experts warned that Ma’s friction with Beijing could hurt growth.

“Investors are taking a much closer look at Alibaba after being drawn to the founder’s growth story and global profile,” Tech Titans of China writer Rebecca Fannin told CNBC via email.

“The current friction is a new reality for investors who may not have carefully considered how the company’s rise as a powerful tech titan could pose a threat to the status quo.”

It started in October when Ma made some negative comments on China’s financial regulators a few days before the Ant Group went public in Shanghai and Hong Kong, the largest in the world. Ma also founded the Ant Group and Alibaba owns about a third of the company.

There are now two main problems. First, this Ant Group could be forced to restructure and even downsize some of their businesses like lending that drove their growth. Such steps could seriously affect the assessment. The second concern is whether regulators could force Alibaba to break up or change parts of the core business of trading, which is the biggest driver of profit.

“Right now, the biggest risk appears to be investor confidence in the Alibaba brand and ecosystem,” Neil Campling, director of technology, media and telecommunications research at Mirabaud Securities, told CNBC via email.

“But if there is tighter regulation for the main drivers of the Alibaba platform, it could certainly curb Alibaba’s growth. Ultimately, innovation and intricate weaving of the various aspects of the ecosystem together lead to economies of scale and growth.”

Campling has a long-term buy rating on Alibaba’s stock.

Just “noise” for long-term investors

Fannin believes Ma’s friction with Beijing will “ease,” but it will take some “agility on the part of Alibaba to cope with government pressures, changing consumer needs in a digital economy, and investor concerns.”

Alibaba’s US-listed stock has been under pressure since the Ant Group went public, falling from a record high of $ 317.14 on October 27 to $ 254.50 at close of trading on Tuesday, a decline of nearly 20%.

However, some analysts and investors remain optimistic.

Mizuho raised its target price on the stock Tuesday to $ 285 from $ 270, saying the stock is (attractive as the regulatory overhang is largely priced in).

Matthew Schopfer, head of research at Infusive, an asset manager invested in Alibaba, said recent concerns about the tech giant “will prove to be noise for the long-term investor.”

“Alibaba is a leading example of China’s technological prowess, and we don’t expect the government to permanently damage business. Furthermore, tighter regulation will only further solidify scale players like Alibaba,” Schopfer told CNBC via email.

“When we get to the other side of this regulatory headwind, we think the market will once again focus on Alibaba and its platforms as an important part of everyday life in China and a major beneficiary of the growth in Chinese purchasing power and the increasing digitization of consumption.”

Honeywell CEO on the Covid mass vaccination web site in North Carolina

0

More than 20,000 people were vaccinated against Covid-19 last weekend at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The idea for the three-day event came during a humble walk, according to Darius Adamczyk, CEO of Honeywell International.

“In the Covid era, one of the more social things you can still do is go for a walk outside with some of your friends,” Adamczyk said on Squawk Box on Tuesday. One weekend, Adamczyk said he was walking with Carolina Panthers President Tom Glick and Atrium Health CEO Gene Woods, who both live in his neighborhood.

The men discussed the introduction of Covid vaccinations in the US, which started more slowly than expected from mid-December, Adamczyk recalled. “We said, ‘You know, maybe we could help here. Maybe we could work together as a team.'”

Atrium Health, as a non-profit healthcare system with 42 hospitals, could of course direct the actual administration of the vaccines, Adamczyk said. The Panthers are now well experienced in handling large crowds at Bank of America Stadium, where David Tepper’s NFL franchise plays its home games.

Honeywell could bring its logistics and sales expertise, as well as its technological capabilities, to the table more broadly, Adamczyk said. Put all three Charlotte-based organizations together, he said, and “we think we can do something really different.”

“I have to thank our mayor, [Vi Alexander Lyles,] thank our governor, [Roy Cooper,] for actually shooting ourselves because it could have been a disaster, “said Adamczyk. But it turned out to be a success, he said.

The goal was to deliver 19,000 vaccines at the stadium event, a spokesman for Atrium Health told CNBC. In the end, more than 20,000 were administered. The week before, Honeywell, Atrium Health, and Tepper Sports & Entertainment, the company that holds Tepper’s ownership of the Panthers, also worked together on a vaccination site at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where more than 15,000 shots were fired.

The pace of vaccinations in the US has improved in recent weeks and the number of doses given now exceeds the number of confirmed Covid cases since the pandemic began. As of Monday, a total of 32.8 million doses had been administered, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including just over 6 million Americans who both received two-dose vaccinations. 26.4 million coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the United States, data from Johns Hopkins University shows.

The event at Bank of America Stadium was vaccinated every 4.5 seconds on average, Adamczyk said. “The other statistic that I think is really important here is that 30% are from communities of colored people.”

“We did it in three days – Friday, Saturday, Sunday,” he added. “Twelve hours a day, 20,000 people. See if we could do it and set up 50 or 100 such locations across the country.”

Adamczyk acknowledged that vaccine supply restrictions may currently prohibit this vision, but was confident that those restrictions would ease in the coming weeks and months.

“Ultimately, this becomes a queuing problem, and the right and most efficient way to solve the queuing problem is to have very large, very efficient distribution centers that are all over the country, across the states, and very quickly take them in the arms of the people, “said Adamczyk.

“We have to get back to life, we have to go back to good economic times and the fastest way the economy can recover is to get people vaccinated,” he added.

Buy The Best Stocks: Cramer’s Mad Money Review (Tuesday, 02/02/21)

We are in a difficult moment in the stock market, explained Cramer. Vaccines are slowly picking up speed and the end of the pandemic may be in sight. But things could get a lot worse in the meantime. Because of this, investors are starting to sell the “nesting” stocks at home and buy the “reopening” stocks that will thrive when we return to normal.

But instead of trying to thread that needle, Cramer said he’s looking for stocks that are excellent management and can thrive in any setting. Stocks like Walt Disney Co. surprised investors by doubling its streaming, but the company will also thrive once movies, theme parks, and sports get back up and running. Then there is Boeing, a company that is using the pandemic to improve its operations so that it can emerge even stronger from the shutdown.

Cramer said he is still a fan of Amazon even though founder Jeff Bezos plans to leave his position as CEO for the role of executive chairman. He also believed Alphabet was well positioned for a return to economic activity.

Cramer said he is not a fan of the AMC theater chain, although it is also a reopening. The company is poorly managed and has a poor balance sheet, which makes other reopening stocks far more attractive.

Executive decision: Chipotle Mexican Grill

In his first “Executive Decision” segment, Cramer spoke to Brian Niccol, chairman and CEO of Chipotle Mexican Grill, the burrito chain with stocks that were making new highs as digital orders continued to surge.

Niccol said 2020 was a challenging year for Chipotle, but it was also one that demonstrated their resilience and the power of their digital operations. He said ordering online for in-store pickup is the most profitable way for customers to order from Chipotle, but they are still eager to reopen the dining rooms and give everyone a chance to enjoy a social experience as well.

Looking ahead in 2021, Niccol plans to open more than 200 new locations for the year, which will be a nice change of pace after a slowdown in 2020.

Eventually, Niccol found that they continue to work with multiple delivery companies and models to find the right balance that everyone can benefit from in the new digital economy.

Chipotle will be advertising in the Super Bowl again this year. Niccol said the ad will highlight “Eating with Integrity” and everything that Chipotle stands for.

Executive decision: UPS

For his second “Executive Decision” segment, Cramer also spoke to Carol Tome, CEO of UPS, the shipping giant, which just posted a 52 cents per share profit jump after a strong vacation quarter.

According to Tome, UPS is continuing to transform its business and this quarter revenue has grown faster than volume, a merit for the entire team. She said UPS provided 97% service throughout the vacation quarter while increasing productivity.

Productivity is the name of the game, especially given that demand outperforms supply in the retail packaging business. For this reason, UPS works with all shipping partners to further increase productivity and meet growing demand.

When asked how our country is doing with vaccine shipments, Tome gave us a good testimonial. She said UPS has delivered over 225,000 vaccine shipments to date with 99.99% accuracy. UPS delivers vaccines from the manufacturer to dosing centers in less than 20 hours while maintaining the required very cold temperatures.

Executive decision: Norfolk Southern

For his final “Executive Decision” segment, Cramer checked in Jim Squires, the chairman and CEO of Norfolk Southern, the railroad, which saw earnings jump 16 cents a share last week.

Knappen said the Norfolk Southern has made a remarkable change over the years. When the railroad started, 30% of its volume was coal, but now the company transports the goods to support our consumer economy, including cars, consumer goods, and intermodal shipments. He reminded viewers that rail is the most economical way to move goods and is far better than trucks in terms of CO2 emissions.

When asked how they weathered the pandemic, after an initial hit, Squires said Norfolk Southern could move fast to cut costs and increase productivity. In fact, the company just finished its fifth straight year of productivity gains. The railroad continues to buy back its own shares with its excess cash flow.
