We may not know, but many of the words and phrases we use all day can casually disparage others. Many of our idioms and common language clichés could be called Ableist, or discriminatory for people with disabilities. Some of these terms have become rarer as more people become more aware of their problematic origins (kids today don’t like the “R-word” nearly as much as they did a few decades ago), but many of them are still used all the time.

61 million adults in the United States currently live with disabilities, according to CDC data. The sheer size of the disabled American population likely means you know someone who has one. (My brother has one leg, for example.) Being ableist in our language – unwanted or not – is something we should absolutely avoid. It confirms unconscious biases and reinforces an unnecessary divide between people from different communities.

To that end, here are some common phrases and words that you should absolutely remove from your vocabulary in the hope that they will eventually disappear from the dictionary altogether.

“It’s so lame.”

It’s easy to throw the word “lame” at someone or something that has let you down. But the word is defined by Oxford language dictionaries as “(especially of an animal) that cannot walk easily as a result of an injury or illness to the leg or foot.” Using it to describe a person is insulting –however, it was used just that way for years. So don’t use it today to signal your frustration that Best Buy PS5s sold out.

“Don’t be such a joke.”

You may still remember your days on the playground. Medically after National Institute of Health, “Spastic” is an outdated term that refers to the uncontrolled physical movements of a person, typically caused by damage to the spinal cord. In the UK, the word has become a common insult at the “R-word” level in the US, while in the US As such, the word is a less polluting substitute for “clumsy,” but both uses are for those in the know Suffering from disease, dehumanizing. Describing someone as “wheelchair-bound”

Although this term is often used without the intent to be offensive, such as “suffering” above, the use of this term to describe someone using a wheelchair ultimately defines the whole person through their disability, rather than simply seeing them as a facet to acknowledge his own life. It is easy to understand that there is so much more to a person than their physical abilities or limitations.

“You are such a lunatic / lunatic / psycho.”

If someone gets on your nerves or behaves disproportionately, it is generally not the right way to describe them in words that are often associated with marginalizing and influencing neuro-atypical people. Boeing continues to delay the check flight of the Starliner OFT-2 crew spacecraft

Boeing’s second unmanned flight test of its Starliner spacecraft has been delayed by at least two months due to problems with the capsule’s drive valves, the company said on Friday.

The latest mission – called Orbital Flight Test 2 or OFT-2 – was previously targeted for December 2020, but Boeing delayed the launch several times, with August 3 being the most recent target. During preparations on launch day, Boeing discovered that 13 valves on the spacecraft’s propulsion system were not opening, causing the company to delay launch.

While the company’s engineers restored functionality to nine of the 13 valves over the past week and a half, Boeing Vice President John Vollmer said the team had “exhausted all possible options” to fix Starliner while the capsule was on the rocket – which required a return to the company’s processing facility for further investigation.

According to Vollmer, Boeing is working with Aerojet Rocketdyne, the manufacturer of the valves, to identify the exact cause of the problems and analyze possible preventive measures or new designs.

The extra work means Boeing won’t have an opportunity to launch OFT-2 this month, NASA Commercial Crew program manager Steve Stich told reporters, and is “definitely on the other hand” delaying an agency mission scheduled for mid-October.

The OFT-2 delay announcement comes about 19 months after Boeing’s first flight test went wrong.

OFT-2 represents a repetition of Boeing’s first unmanned flight test in December 2019. This first Starliner mission was canceled when, after a successful launch, the spacecraft’s flight control system misfired and the capsule did not reach the International Space Station as planned. While Boeing was able to test many parts of the Starliner during the shortened flight, NASA declared the flight test a “tight call” and said the spacecraft could have been lost twice during the mission.

The company made dozens of changes, along with NASA, according to an investigation. In addition, Boeing is assuming the cost of OFT-2 after allocating $ 410 million shortly after the initial flight test. Vollmer said Friday he wasn’t sure how much the delay and extra work will cost Boeing.

Competing with SpaceX

Boeing developed Starliner as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew program, which the space agency began in 2010 when the space shuttle retired. The aim of the program was to encourage private sector companies to develop the most cost-effective, innovative and safest way to get astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

The program was structured as a multi-stage competition in which companies competed for NASA contracts to build space transportation systems under certain parameters set by the agency. NASA eventually awarded the contracts to SpaceX and Boeing, with the latter aerospace entrepreneur receiving nearly $ 5 billion to develop the Starliner.

Built to carry up to five people to the International Space Station, Starliner launches on an Atlas V rocket – built and operated by United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

SpaceX and Boeing have been building and testing their crew transport systems for almost a decade. However, SpaceX’s successful launch of astronauts in May 2020 was an important milestone for the company as Boeing had to catch up. SpaceX’s launch marked the first time NASA astronauts took off from US soil since 2011 and the first time a commercially built spacecraft carried NASA astronauts.

Since then, SpaceX has flown two astronaut missions for NASA with its Crew Dragon capsules and safely transported a total of 10 people into space. Elon Musk’s company has two more crew launches planned for this fall, with the private Inspiration4 mission and the Crew 3 mission for NASA.

The FDA approved third doses of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for “solid organ transplant recipients or those diagnosed with conditions considered to be equivalent”. Authorities have not released a booster vaccination to anyone else fully vaccinated or to recipients of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine, which is manufactured in the Janssen vaccines division.

“There is currently no data to support the use of an additional dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine following a Janssen Covid-19 primary vaccine in immunocompromised people. The FDA and CDC are actively working to provide guidance on this matter,” said Dr. Neela. from CDC Goswami wrote to ACIP in her presentation.

The CDC recommended a third dose for at-risk Americans 28 days or more after completing the first two rounds of shooting. Booster doses are also recommended for cancer patients and HIV patients after data showed that immune responses after the first two doses did not provide adequate protection against Covid-19 and its variants in these patients.

The additional recordings were recommended for Pfizer recipients aged 12 and over and for Moderna recipients aged 18 and over. The panel said it will revisit the recordings for younger Moderna recipients after the FDA clears the recordings for children.

Immunocompromised patients make up approximately 2.7% of the US adult population and 44% of breakthrough hospital-treated infections that make someone infected even after being fully vaccinated.

Studies suggest that a third dose of the vaccine might help people whose immune systems do not respond as well to a first or second dose. Five small studies cited by the CDC showed that 11% to 80% of people with compromised immune systems had no detectable antibodies to Covid after two shots.

Among immunocompromised patients who had no detectable antibody response, 33 to 50% developed an antibody response after receiving an additional dose, according to the CDC.

Patients at risk are also more likely to experience persistent Covid infections, the panel said. The data also suggests that they are likely to shed more viruses and potentially infect more people than those who are not immunocompromised.

Early data from small studies on the effects of booster doses in immunocompromised patients showed no serious side effects from a third vaccination with an mRNA vaccine and symptoms beyond those identified after the first two-dose dose.

Several countries, including Israel, the Dominican Republic, France, the UK and Germany, have either already started or are considering giving booster doses of Covid-19 vaccines.

Immunocompromised patients receiving a third dose should continue to wear a mask and social distancing, the panel said.

Survey data from hesitant immunocompromised patients show that, according to a panel presentation by Dr. Kathleen Dooling of the CDC still has many worried about the side effects of the vaccines and the speed at which the vaccines have been developed, as well as the general suspicion about the vaccines.

Around 10% of immunocompromised patients say they will “definitely not” receive a vaccine, another 9% say they are “unsure” or “probably not” and 44% say they will “definitely” get a vaccine. Those who hesitate are usually younger, belong to an ethnic or racial minority, or are female.

Amazon is capturing subsequent ‘Lord of the Rings’ collection within the UK, not New Zealand

Amazon has announced that it will be filming the second season of its unnamed television series “Lord of the Rings” in the UK rather than New Zealand, where the first season and Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning film trilogy were filmed.

Amazon Studios said Thursday that moving from New Zealand is part of its strategy to expand its manufacturing presence in the UK and invest in studio space in the UK. The exact locations were not disclosed.

Industry publication Deadline reported that New Zealand’s strict Covid-19 lockdown rules meant that the show’s cast, more than half of whom are British, were unable to return home for nearly two years. The country’s border control measures have also reportedly prevented Amazon executives from visiting the sets.

The landscapes of New Zealand, home to rugged snow-capped mountains, vast blue lakes and rolling green hills, helped make the films a huge hit. The country has strong ties to the franchise, with hundreds of its 5 million residents featured in the films and a special museum in the capital, Wellington.

Amazon had already praised New Zealand for its abundant hospitality when it announced the series in 2019 and said it was looking forward to deepening the relationship.

Moving to the UK, where Lord of the Rings writer JRR Tolkien is from, has reportedly disappointed some New Zealand lawmakers. The New Zealand government did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

Tourism boom

New Zealand experienced an increase in tourism in the wake of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. In 2004, according to the New Zealand Tourism Guide, approximately 6% of New Zealand’s visitors (approximately 120,000 to 150,000 people) cited the film franchise as a top reason for visiting.

The country had offered Amazon an additional 5% on top of the standard 20% discount incentives for production budgets.

The additional discount is now being withdrawn, but Economic Development Minister Stuart Nash reportedly said Amazon was still eligible for a $ 132 million New Zealand discount ($ 92 million).
