Asia-Pacific markets advance, Hong Kong leads income, Covid in focus

SINGAPORE – Asia Pacific markets traded higher for the most part on Monday, with indices in Australia, Hong Kong and mainland China making gains.

Australia’s ASX 200 benchmark rose 0.16% as investors kept an eye on the country’s Covid-19 situation. The Australian dollar changed hands against the greenback at $ 0.7354, climbing $ 0.7326 from previous levels. The Aussie fell from levels above $ 0.7400 after a resurgent dollar on Friday on strong non-farm wage data.

Australia reported 280 new Covid cases over a 24-hour period on Sunday, most of them in the populous state of New South Wales. According to reports, around 15 million people, or 60% of the country’s population, are under strict lockdown.

In South Korea, the Kospi index mimicked most of its previous losses, trading almost unchanged at 3,269.17. The Kosdaq also lost 0.05%. Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index rose 0.97%.

Mainland China stocks traded mixed: the Shanghai composite rose 0.56% while the Shenzhen stake was slightly lower.

New hires in the United States rose as quickly in July as it has for almost a year, despite fears about the Covid-19 Delta variant and shortage of labor.

“The market reacted positively to the strong wage data outside of agriculture, with an increase in risk (not always the case this year),” analysts from ANZ Research said in a statement on Monday morning.

“The strength of the data confirms the Fed’s view that the labor market will remain buoyant throughout the summer despite concerns about the Delta variant,” the analysts wrote, adding that there is still a long way to go before employment , Friday’s numbers offset some of the pessimism that had built up.

China’s export growth slowed unexpectedly in July, while imports also lost momentum. Exports were up 19.3% year over year, compared to a 32.2% increase in June and a 20.8% market forecast, Reuters reported. Imports rose 28.1% year over year, less than a market forecast of 33%.

“Extreme weather conditions and local Covid outbreaks have not helped, while supply disruptions have also hampered export activities,” Rodrigo Catril, a senior foreign exchange strategist at National Australia Bank, said in a morning note.

China is expected to release inflation data on Monday.

The lack of consumer inflationary pressures “is not an obstacle to further monetary easing, an issue that is likely to attract more attention if the incoming data flow shows further economic slowdown,” said Catril.

Currencies and oil

The US dollar traded HK / SIN at 92.811 versus a basket of its competitors at 10:44 a.m., sliding down from an earlier level around 92.921.

Oil prices fell more than 2% during Asian trading hours on Monday.

US crude fell 2.33% to $ 66.69 a barrel, while the global benchmark Brent fell 2.22% to $ 69.13.

In the past year, many parents had the unexpected experience of their adult children moving back in with them due to various pandemic-related issues such as university switching to online courses, job loss, or financial stress. According to a recent one Pew Research Center survey, 52% of young adults between the ages of 18 and 29 lived with their parents in July 2020. This is the highest measured percentage since the beginning of the measurement, with the second highest recorded towards the end of the Great Depression. The nest, once empty, was full again.

Now that everything is opening up again, many parents are dealing with their children moving out again, leading to a second round of Empty Nest Syndrome. For many parents, this can lead to feelings of grief and loss, as well as a reassessment of their own identities outside of their parental roles. “There’s just more susceptibility to COVID,” said Natalie Caine, whose organization, Life is changing, supports parents in transitional situations, such as when their children move out.

When adult children move out and then move in again

“As a family, we have a certain pattern, a way of life that becomes a little more comfortable,” he said Jerrold Shapiro, Professor of Clinical Psychology at Santa Clara University and author of the book Find meaning, face fears: Live mid-life full time and retire. “Then there is a shift where you suddenly move from a system in which the children are the focus, in which the parents are only with each other. That requires a lot of adjustment. ”

“It’s very healthy to face fears of the unknown in reasonable, moderate chunks,” said Shapiro. This may include trying out new hobbies, shifting gears in your career, as well as spending extra time with your partner to re-establish a relationship outside of the parental role.

As parents struggle with Void Nest Syndrome, it is important to be patient and remember that adjustment takes time. “It’s incredibly difficult to make these adjustments,” Shapiro said. “If you are preparing for someone moving in and out of your house, then moving in and out, these adjustments need to be made all the time.”

The main challenge that comes with moving children out is the process of re-establishing their identity outside of their role as parents. “Parents struggle with ‘what’s my role?'” Caine said.

Moving from the busy schedule of full-time parenting to a quieter, emptier home can be a shocking shock – even if it’s the second time you’ve moved out. For many parents, this is a time to rely on their support network, which includes friends and family, and it is a good time to reassess some of their own goals and dreams.

“Enjoy dreaming about something you’ve never done before that you might want to do,” Caine said. “You have to start having your dream list and your reality list.”

For some, this could mean a new invention in their careers; for others, it could be the entry into health and fitness or a new hobby. This dream list will look different for everyone, but it is important to realize what is important to you, rather than on some of the stereotypical activities that others might expect.

Maintain open communication with your children

Just because your kids moved out doesn’t mean you stop being parents. “Worrying about kids after they leave college doesn’t diminish much,” Shapiro said. This is the time to hope that you have taught your children well enough and that the stupid, risky things they inevitably do won’t harm them, at least not permanently. In a world with COVID-19, it also means you need to worry about staying healthy.

As Caine points out, it is important to let your children know that everyone makes mistakes, including you, and that you are still there for them when they do, whether or not they learn from the experience.

“Don’t be the teacher, be the sensitive person,” Caine said. If you put too much emphasis on learning from your mistakes, as she points out, it will confuse the children and make them believe that if they don’t learn something, you may not be there for them. “What you really want to say is, ‘Mistakes happen and we’re here for you. What is a Vulnerable Narcissist?

Unlike their grandiose counterparts, a vulnerable narcissist is likely to wallow instead of exuding charm and a magnetic personality. But they usually manage to suck those closest to them into their vortex of negativity in order to gain control over whoever is closest to them.

Lisa A. Romano, a certified life coach specializing in codependency and narcissistic abuse, tells Lifehacker:

The vulnerable narcissist sees himself as the ultimate victim and his narcissistic supply comes in the form of your attention and his ability to make you care for him, feel sorry for him, or make him the center of your world.

While a healthy partner would appreciate your honesty when it came to expressing your constructive and well-meaning opinions, a vulnerable narcissist sees even the slightest honesty as an attack.

It can be difficult to find yourself in a situation like this where you are being accused of being deliberately hurtful for expressing your feelings. As Sherman says, “You need to set boundaries, stand up for your needs and feelings, and possibly suggest that they seek therapy once you’ve decided to stay in the relationship. You can also choose to leave if you feel it is poisonous. ”

Relationships with narcissists rarely, if ever, go well. Trying to face the tendencies can ultimately prove pointless. So always understand that professional help is probably the best option.

Why you must know your foot measurement in centimeters

Shoe sizes vary so widely between brands that buying a new pair can feel like a shit shop. Of course, the best way to get a good fit is to just try them on, but that’s not always possible. If you have no choice but to order online, you should know how big your feet actually are in centimeters.

Why centimeters and not inches? Unsurprisingly, they are more common: almost every shoe manufacturer in the world introduces centimeter measurements in their size charts, so once you know your numbers, you can easily find your size on any brand. It also makes converting men’s sizes to women’s or children’s sizes (and vice versa) quick and accurate. Basically, when you buy shoes online, you need to measure your feet.

Fortunately, this is super easy to do. The two best methods require a ruler or tape measure, pen and paper, and someone to help. Centimeter markings are ideal, but it’s fine if you don’t have a metric ruler or tape. Make sure to multiply each measurement in inches by 2.54 to get the corresponding number in centimeters.

Using your measurements takes the guesswork out of determining your size. Let’s say your left foot is 10 inches and your right foot is 10 inches. For shoes that need a snug fit and / or are likely to stretch, look for a size that is 26.5 or 27 centimeters. If you want a more roomy fit – for example for boots that you wear with thick socks – choose 27.5 or even 28.

Expedia CEO requires Covid vaccine for everybody however says it isn’t required for workers

Expedia is holding back on a company-wide Covid vaccine mandate even as other large companies begin implementing them, CEO Peter Kern told CNBC on Friday.

“We’re trying to find solutions that are most widely used across our entire workforce, but there are no easy answers. … We all have to learn to live with Covid,” Kern said on Squawk Box. . “

Air quality in the United States and Europe has improved over the past decade thanks to stricter environmental regulations, but the rise in forest fires is raising new air pollution concerns.

The National Interagency Fire Center reported that there were 107 major active fires on Aug. 8, which so far this year had burned more than 2.2 million acres inland in 15 states. In Europe, forest fires are now raging in Greece and Turkey amid record heat waves.

As a result, more and more people are turning to mobile apps to understand when the air quality is better or worse, wherever they are. These apps use a mix of data from government-operated satellites or weather, fire, and ambient air quality stations, as well as sensors and systems operated by private sector companies. Some are even crowdsourced from relatively affordable air quality sensors from companies like PurpleAir and IQAir.

Air quality apps

According to Sensor Tower’s Senior Mobile Insights Analyst Jonathan Briskman, the top-rated apps for outdoor air quality monitoring in the US between January 2020 and July 2021 were: AirCare, AirVisual and South Coast AQMD, based on reviews from the App Store, and GooglePlay .

The AirCare app shows air pollution, active fires, wind conditions and pollen count on a map.

According to Sensor Tower, the five most popular air quality apps in the US, based on installations since early 2020, include two of these top-rated apps, AirVisual (from IQ Air) and Air Care, as well as the agency’s US environmental protection agency The AirNow app , an app from venture-backed startup Breezometer that displays air quality, pollen, and active fire data, and an app called Oregon Air that was developed for the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.

How air pollution affects health

Monitoring and measuring air quality are critical to public health, says Yanelli Nunez, a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.

She notes that robust studies have shown that air pollution contributes to lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lower respiratory infections, and even affects mortality, pregnancy outcomes, and cardiovascular disease.

Nunez works in an environmental and health science laboratory with Marianthi-Anna Kioumourtzoglou. Their research has also found that long-term exposure to air pollution can affect the nervous system and affect functions such as memory and cognitive abilities.

The scientists wrote in an email to CNBC, “Americans who live in areas with poor air quality are typically colored people or low-income communities. Pollutants in the open air, for example from vehicles with internal combustion engines, photochemical smog, refineries and forest fires, can get into apartments and buildings when doors and windows are opened, when heating and air conditioning systems are used or through other cracks in the building.

Consumer apps and devices today don’t give users absolute, precise measurements down to micrograms per cubic meter of a given pollutant, Corsi noted. But they are very valuable for identifying trends and relative changes in air quality.

Sensors placed indoors can work well to check that protective measures are working to improve the air in a home, school, or other building.

Some other simple measures that can protect or improve indoor air quality, according to Corsi, especially during the forest fire season: wet mopping floors and wiping surfaces to keep pollutants from building up, using HEPA or highly efficient particulate air filters, and increasing the MERV or minimum efficiency report value of filters in central air systems in a house.
