Twitter users Ian St. recently asked for a list of the most popular Catholic films, leaving the interpretation of the question open, and people were happy to offer their top picks:
These aren’t strictly pro-Catholic films (though most are). Some ask uncomfortable questions; they are challenging and uncomfortable. Several users mentioned Dogma, which I didn’t include on this list because, oddly enough, it’s not currently streamed anywhere.
Also interesting: Although many users referenced Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, no one offered Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ, suggesting that the culture war that started in 1988 never quite subsided. Some users interpreted the question as a request for films with generally Christian themes, which led to some … interesting suggestions, including at least one Old Testament epic and a few films that are overtly Protestant.
