If you’ve turned on automatic updates on Windows 10, you’ve probably noticed a new – and rather annoying – weather and news widget has been added to the system tray. It’s called “News and Interests,” which Microsoft added to Windows 10 with the 1909 update, and it highlights everything that’s wrong with Windows 10: inconsistent design elements, adding a feature that no one really asked for, and more clutter you don’t need to do.
The taskbar widget actually looks a bit blurry compared to the sharp high-resolution elements all around, which adds to the sadness. (We’re not mad at you, Microsoft; we’re just disappointed.)
Fortunately, you can easily remove it. Here’s how:
- Right click any part of your Windows 10 computer’s system tray. This is located to the left of the clock and network connection icons in the lower right corner of the screen.
- Choose News and interests.
- click Turn off.
If you ever regret (unlikely) your decision to remove this widget, you can bring it back up Right click somewhere in the system tray and selection Messages and Interests> View icon and text. You will also find an option called. to notice Show symbol onlywhich only shows the small weather symbol with no text next to it.
If you hover over the weather widget, you will also see a huge window with news and weather information. If you want to see the weather in your system tray but don’t care about news and updates from Microsoft, you can just turn off the news part of the widget.
To do that, Right click in the system tray and go to News and interests. Deactivate Now Open when floating. This keeps the weather widget in the system tray, but the enlarged one – annoying! – Message window cannot be opened unless you click on the widget.
