Heavy rains and floods have wreaked havoc in parts of Western Europe, and rescue workers are currently trying to prevent further damage.

The death toll rose to over 150 on Saturday, according to media reports, with that number expected to rise as the tides recede.

Parts of Switzerland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands are affected, but the worst floods are reported to be in Germany and Belgium.

The Rhineland-Palatinate district of Ahrweiler is one of the most severely affected areas, along with North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous federal state.

The World Meteorological Organization announced on Friday that some parts of Western Europe had rained for up to two months in just two days.

How the US grew to become the world’s new Bitcoin mining hub

Long before China decided to kick out all of its bitcoin miners, they were already leaving in droves, and new data from Cambridge University shows they were likely headed for the US.

The US has quickly become the new darling of the Bitcoin mining world. It is the second largest mining destination in the world and represented almost 17% of all bitcoin miners in the world as of April 2021. That’s an increase of 151% compared to September 2020.

“In the past 18 months we have seen strong growth in mining infrastructure in the United States,” said Darin Feinstein, founder of Blockcap and Core Scientific. “We have seen a massive increase in mining operations looking to relocate to North America, mainly the US.”

That dataset doesn’t include the mass mining exodus from China, which resulted in half of the world’s miners going offline, and experts tell CNBC that the U.S. share of the mining market is likely even larger than the numbers suggest.

According to the newly released Cambridge data, just before China’s mining ban began, the country accounted for 46% of the world’s total hashrate, an industry term used to describe the collective computing power of the Bitcoin network. That’s a sharp drop from 75.5% in September 2019, and the percentage is likely much lower given the current exodus.

“500,000 formerly Chinese miner rigs are looking for a home in the USA,” said Fred Thiel from Marathon Digital. “If deployed, it would mean North America would have closer to 40% of the world’s hashrate by the end of 2022.”

The new mining mecca

America’s growing dominance is a simple stroke of luck preparing for meetings. The USA has been quietly expanding its hosting capacities for years.

Tennessee’s decision to stop vaccinating teenagers during a pandemic is “incredibly worrying,” the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.

“I find this incredibly worrying. It’s not only worrying for Covid, but also for all vaccine-preventable diseases,” said CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky on Thursday in an interview with CBS This Morning.

The state’s Department of Health has reportedly decided to end the diffusion of youth vaccines for all vaccines, not just Covid, effectively ending any government communication or education initiatives for youth in the state about vaccines.

The decision made headlines when the state’s Medical Director for Vaccine Preventable Diseases and Programs for the Tennessee Department of Health, Dr. Michelle Fiscus, was released after sending a memo to doctors outlining government policies that allow minors to seek medical assistance without parents’ approval.

Department spokesman Bill Christian said in a statement to CNBC that the state has not stopped its child immunization program and continues to “support these education efforts. Information provision and access are routine public health functions and that has not changed ”.

Termites also have very fragile wings that can easily fall off, and if you see fallen wings around your home it can sometimes indicate an infestation.

Places to find ants or termites

Another clue as to what insect you’re dealing with is where to find it.

Outside in broad daylight

Termites tend to avoid light, explains Graham. So, unless you are on a mission to find them outdoors, you probably haven’t seen them outside yet. Ants, on the other hand, aren’t shy, and you’ve likely seen them crawling around outdoors and / or at picnics (both real life and cartoons).

Near food or wood

One of the main differences between ants and termites is their diet. Ants are not picky eaters: they feed on plants, animals, and any food waste or scraps. They are often seen on kitchen tables (especially when food is left out), crawling around garbage cans and around pet food bowls.

Termites, on the other hand, only consume things that are high in cellulose, like wood and paper, says Graham. So instead of finding them near human food sources, you’re more likely to find them in drywall, cardboard, insulation, wood, and other things with this tasty cellulose.

And if you discover wood damage – especially piles of sawdust or wood pellets – and suspect insects in your home, there’s a good chance you’re dealing with termites. Ants usually do not cause wood damage.

How to get rid of ants and termites

Normal house ants are for the most part something to take care of yourself. (That’s how it’s done.) But when you suspect you have to do it Fire or carpenter ants, Graham says you might want to consider using a professional to assess the situation. Also, because of the structural damage termites can cause (which are not always visible), if you think these house wrecks may have moved in with you, it’s best to consult a professional.
