Millennial Cash: What Will You Train Your Youngsters About Cash?

Hey internet: do you remember millennials? Many of us have done our lattes and leisurely brunches to become parents with jobs, car loans, and maybe even a mortgage.

On our way to growing up, we have experienced two global crises – a recession and a pandemic. Many of us still carry mountains of student debt. Those years have shaped our approach to money and now we are teaching our children what we know.

Here are the money lessons five millennial parents across the country want to teach their children (answers have been edited for length and clarity):

“NEVER THINK YOUR CHILD IS TOO YOUNG TO LEARN”

LAURYNN VAUGHN, 37, FROM KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA, IS A MOTHER OF TWO DAUGHTERS, AGED 5 AND 4 YEARS. SHE LEADS A DAILY OPERATOR THAT CLOSED DURING THE Pandemic BUT HAS REOPENED. SHE IS ALSO AN ACTIVE VOLUNTEER.

“I don’t want to pass on that I wasn’t taught money. I think the sooner you start teaching your kids the better. I’m already teaching them that there are pretty much three principles to money. Number 1 is giving. The second is saving. And the third is what you have left is what you can enjoy. My principles are a little different, there are really four: I pay bills, then I give, I save and have money left over to enjoy. It is better to teach them at their level than not to teach them because you are waiting for them to reach a level. ”

“It’s better to be a working student and leave college with a lot less debt”

MAE WAUGH BARRIOS, 34, FROM HOLLISTON, MASSACHUSETTS, IS THE MOTHER OF THREE CHILDREN, 10, 4 AND 2 YEARS OLD. SHE’S TEACHING TRAINER FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND IS UNPAID TO TAKE CARE OF HER CHILDREN DURING THE Pandemic. HER HUSBAND, FRANCISCO, RUNS A LANDSCAPE SHOP. She has $ 20,000 in student loans to pay off.

“That was the biggest mistake I’ve made in my entire life. Everyone said go to the college you want just take the loans. Nobody told me the real aftermath of student loans. My husband didn’t go to college. Our plan is to open a college savings account for (our children) when I go back to work. It’s (also) better to be a student trainee and leave college with much less debt. My husband and I made sure we don’t get so bogged down in debt that we cannot survive. We talk a lot at the dinner table about being rich and poor. When you are rich, your money works for you. When you are poor, you work for money. ”

‘MAKING EXPERIENCES MORE’

STEFFA MANTILLA, 36, FROM HOUSTON has a 4-YEAR-OLD SON. SHE IS A CERTIFIED TEACHER IN FINANCIAL EDUCATION, FORMER ZOOKEPER AND FOUNDER OF THE PERSONAL FINANCE WEBSITE MONEY TAMER.

“In our household we place more value on ‘experiences’ than on ‘things’. (For my son’s birthday) instead of buying tons of gifts, we buy a gift and then tickets to the children’s museum or the local zoo. We encourage relatives to give away experiences that they can have together. This puts the focus on family and friends and at the same time teaches him to live with less stuff. ”

“DON’T BE AFRAID TO INVEST”

ALAN LAFRANCE, 37, FROM AUSTIN, TEXAS, HAS A 5-YEAR-OLD SON. HE WORKS IN DIGITAL MARKETING AND HIS WIFE MELADEE IS A RESPIRATORY THERAPIST.

“You could pay for a car in cash, but you could (get) a loan for that car and borrow and invest that capital. If you can make more with this money, you will be in a much better position overall. At some point you can’t just throw everything away, you have to start making the money work for you. As parents, we want our children to save, but in reality you can do too much and really miss out on a lot of opportunities. ”

“BUILDING A DIFFERENT STREAM OF INCOME”

JERNESSA JONES, 39, FROM FLORENCE, ALABAMA, IS A MOTHER OF A 6-YEAR-OLD SON AND IS AN ACCREDITED FINANCIAL ADVISER AT OPERATION HOPE, A NON-PROFIT FOR FINANCIAL SKILLS. DURING THE pandemic, she completed an MBA program, bought a home, and started a fashion accessories store.

“My mom and dad didn’t own a business and weren’t home owners. I was looking for homes last year because home ownership is the first step in building intergenerational wealth. I realized I could afford the mortgages on some of the houses I was looking at, but I would probably be poor on houses. I decided to take a step back and see what I could do to build another stream of income. Entrepreneurship was another thing I could teach my son. He was there from start to finish, even when I opened my business account. “

Stock futures were flat on Tuesday as Wall Street opened the vacation-shortened week with the S&P 500 at a record high.

Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell just 1 point. S&P 500 futures were flat and Nasdaq 100 futures were slightly lower. US markets were closed on Monday for Independence Day on July 4th.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose to a six-year high after an important meeting between the oil producing group OPEC and its partners on crude oil exploration policy was canceled. The postponement came when the United Arab Emirates rejected a proposal to extend oil production increases for a second day.

The oil surge boosted energy stocks in pre-trading. The SPDR Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF rose 1.8% in pre-trading. Occidental Petroleum, APA, and ConocoPhillips stocks were all higher.

U.S. shares in Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi plunged up to 25% in premarket trading after China said new users would not be able to download the app until a cybersecurity clearance was conducted. The announcement surprised the markets as Didi only made his US debut on the NYSE last week.

The S&P 500 has had a seven-day winning streak, the longest since August, amid a string of solid economic reports, including a better-than-expected job report on Friday. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite also hit a record high in the previous session.

The economy created 850,000 jobs last month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Economists polled by Dow Jones expected an increase of 706,000.

Still, after a strong first half performance amid a historic economic reopening, many on Wall Street expect smaller and more troubled gains for the remainder of the year. The S&P 500 is up nearly 16% since the start of the year.

“The US economy is booming, but we know it by now and the asset markets reflect it. Which is no longer so clear what price this growth will come at, “said Michael Wilson, chief strategist for US equities at Morgan Stanley, in a note.

“Higher costs mean lower profits, another reason the overall stock market has narrowed … Stock markets will likely pause this summer as things heat up,” said Wilson.

Wall Street’s consensus target for the S&P 500 is 4,276, a loss of nearly 2% from Friday’s closing price of 4,352.34, according to the CNBC Market Strategist Survey, which rounds up the predictions of 16 top strategists.

Investors await the release of the June Federal Open Markets Committee’s minutes of the June meeting for clues to the central bank’s behind-the-scenes discussions on the abolition of its quantitative easing program.

People may not have traveled a lot in the past year, but that hasn’t stopped them from looking for ideas online.

Luxury travel company Unforgettable Travel wanted to know which travel experiences people have been looking for the most over the past year. With the help of digital marketing agency SEO Travel, the company compiled a list of 135 of the world’s most popular bucket list destinations and uses software to determine how many people are planning to visit each website.

The 10 Most Wanted “Bucket List” Travel Experiences

According to the study, which analyzed searches from May 2020 to May 2021, the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, was the most wanted travel experience, a result that surprised the team at Unforgettable Travel.

With more than 160 stories, the Burj Khalifa is 2,716 feet tall, or more than double the height of the 1,250 foot Empire State Building in New York.

“In the top 10 alone there were some experiences that we thought would be listed below, even though they were great experiences … that includes the # 1 Burj Khalifa in Dubai,” said Luke Harvey, a marketing manager for the Company. “But the fact that Dubai stayed open to visitors most of the time during the pandemic will have supported his position.”

That wasn’t the only surprise for the team.

“Trekking to Mount Everest base camp is definitely a once in a lifetime experience, but we didn’t think it would beat the Colosseum in Rome,” he said.

The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island, a small federally owned island south of Manhattan.

Mount Everest’s place on the list could reflect a growing preference for outdoor travel activities. Six hikes appeared in the top 50 list, including Mount Everest, Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Havasu Falls in Arizona, Trolltunga in Norway, Table Mountain in South Africa and the Inca Trail in Peru to Machu Picchu.

Travel experiences “Bucket List” by continent

Continent lists show the travel experiences and websites with the greatest online interest in certain parts of the world.

Africa

History, wildlife and natural wonders are Africa’s most searched websites, including some that are linked in terms of global search activity.

“These are all great things to do in some of Africa’s top destinations,” said Kent Redding, president and co-founder of luxury safari company Africa Adventure Consultants.

He told CNBC that due to the pandemic, travelers should expect some restrictions while these locations are open. For example, visitors must stay 10 meters from the gorillas in Uganda, and the cable car up Table Mountain will be closed until at least July 11, he said.

Travelers to Africa this year are enjoying “a level of exclusivity not seen in a century,” said Kent Redding of Africa Adventure Consultant.

The 2022 travel season is filling fast due to postponements from this year and “a ton of new bookings” for next year, Redding said. That means there are plenty of options for travelers ready to travel this year, he said.

“While travelers now face some hurdles while traveling – including canceled flights, sporadic bans, and lots of Covid testing – those who can roll with the punches enjoy incredible experiences,” Redding said. “You visit some of Africa’s most popular parks and see amazing wildlife … with no one around.”

Antarctic

The White Continent has only one experience on the list – just step on it.

“Antarctica has always had a unique pull,” said Patrick Woodhead, executive director of White Desert, a luxury tour operator that organizes expeditions into the continent. “Customers are drawn to the continent because there is still a sense of discovery in travel that has been lost in so many other places around the world.”

Despite the impression that Antarctica is a large block of ice, the continent is “incredibly diverse,” said Patrick Woodhead of White Desert.

Woodhead said the 2021-2022 travel season will be the company’s busiest season yet.

“With such a long backlog, customers aren’t waiting to experience a lifelong dream,” he told CNBC.

Asia

Even though most of Asia was closed to tourism last year, people were still looking for information about these experiences:

4. Travel to Japan during the cherry blossom season

Perhaps the least known place on Asia’s list, the Raja Ampat archipelago in Indonesia is considered one of the best places in the world for diving.

The list includes both modern architecture – Burj Khalifa, Petronas Towers – and historic ones – the temples of Angkor Wat and Borobudur, as well as China’s Forbidden City.

The extremes of nature are also emphasized; the highest mountain in the world – Mount Everest – and the lowest place on earth – the Dead Sea between Israel and Jordan – are on the list.

Europe

The top 3 searched spots in Europe come as no surprise, and the rest of the list is an eclectic mix of architecture, nature, exercise, and entertainment.

Europe had the most places on the longer list, taking 19 out of 50 places. Italy secured four more with Pompeii, Cinque Terre, the Sistine Chapel and the Canals of Venice.

Two experiences in Iceland – seeing the Northern Lights and swimming in the warm waters of the Blue Lagoon – also made the breakthrough, as did a tour of Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany and Stonehenge in the United Kingdom.

Spain’s still unfinished La Sagrada Familia church narrowly ousted British Buckingham Palace in terms of global search interest last year.

Europe has reopened to some international travelers, but tourists should note that not all of these experiences have been made yet.

North America

Four big city travel experiences in North America made it into the global top 10 list. The rest was concentrated in more rural parts of the continent.

“This is a great list, and I think it hits many of the best US locations and experiences,” said Ruzwana Bashir, CEO of Peek, a travel experience booking website.

She said one way to make bucket list trips special is to see them in interesting ways. From that list, she recommends an underground tour of the Grand Canyon, a zip line in the Mojave Desert outside of Las Vegas, and a seaplane ride over the Golden Gate Bridge.

A seaplane ride offers “incredible views” of the Golden Gate Bridge and the city of San Francisco, said Ruzwana Bashir of Peek.

“On Route 66, I’d recommend taking a tour of the breathtaking caves in Peach Springs, a trip around Santa Fe to raft the Rio Grande, and a local handcrafted cocktail at a beautiful distillery in Galena, Kansas , to enjoy.” said Bashir.

She added that other must-see experiences in North America include a hot air balloon ride over the Napa Valley, a visit to Yosemite National Park, and waterfall yoga in North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains.

Oceania

After Antarctica, Oceania is the most populous continent in the world, comprising Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and many smaller islands such as Fiji, Guam and French Polynesia.

Unsurprisingly, all but one of the most sought-after travel activities involve the outdoors.

Peru’s most famous tourist destination, Macchu Picchu, topped the list. It was also one of four of the “New Seven Wonders of the World” to appear in the list of the 50 Most Wanted Travel Experiences.

“The biggest surprise was that some of the ‘Seven Wonders of the World’ didn’t make the top 50, including the Great Wall of China, Petra in Jordan and Christ the Redeemer in Brazil,” said Harvey of Unforgettable Travel.

In the end, he attributed it to the sheer size of the competition.

“There are so many amazing things to see and do in our world,” he said.

LONDON – UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will detail the final steps to ease UK lockdown rules on Monday.

New guidelines on the 1-meter social distancing rule, face covering, visiting nursing homes and working from home will be announced, the government said on Sunday. A government minister told the BBC over the weekend that some rules, such as wearing masks, would become a personal choice if restrictions were relaxed.

Johnson is expected to reiterate that Covid will become “a virus that we are learning to live with as we already do with the flu,” Downing Street said in a statement released on Sunday evening.

“Freedom Day” – or “Step 4” in the government’s long-term plan to ease restrictions – will take place on July 19, when the government’s “four tests” to ease Covid restrictions are met, Johnson will also note.

The tests include examining data to confirm that vaccine delivery is continuing successfully and that infection rates do not risk an increase in hospital admissions. These will be assessed on July 12, the government said after reviewing the latest data.

The lifting of restrictions in England was previously slated for June 21, but was delayed as the highly transferable Delta variant spread across the UK

While infection rates have increased, hospitalizations and deaths have not increased, suggesting that coronavirus vaccines are helping to prevent serious infections.

The UK government has previously signaled reluctance to maintain restrictions longer than strictly necessary. This is despite some concerns among medical professionals and opposition politicians that the restrictions could be lifted too quickly if the variant spreads across the UK, Europe and beyond.

In comments posted on Sunday, Johnson admitted that “the pandemic is not over yet and that cases will continue to increase in the coming weeks”.

“We must all continue to be careful with the risks of Covid and use judgment in our lives,” he said, adding that “thanks to the successful launch of our vaccination program, we are carefully following our roadmap (to lift the lockdown). . Today we are going to set out how we can restore people’s freedoms. “

The UK’s Covid vaccination program was one of the fastest in the world, with 86% of the adult population now receiving a first dose of a vaccine and 63.8% two doses, government data shows.

REAL Housewives Of Beverly Hills alum Kim Richards has been grappling with huge financial and legal problems since she was fired from the series for her sobriety struggles.

After Bravo was arrested TWICE in 2015, they announced they let Kim go to focus on helping with her personal struggles, but have since guest starred the 56-year-old.

Kim got into legal controversy after years of drug abuse problems – which was documented in the early seasons of RHOBH.

The former child actress displayed erratic behavior in the first two seasons of the reality show and finally sought help in rehab in 2012 – just one of several times she went to a treatment facility.

After obscuring her words and other worrying acts, she admitted to Andy Cohen during her first interview since rehab later that year, “I’m an alcoholic.”

Despite being open about her drinking problems, Kim remained a full-time housewife for the next three years – which led to their legal battles.

In April 2015, the actress was arrested and later charged with trespassing, public intoxication, resisting an officer and battery against a police officer at the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel.

She spent the night in a Los Angeles prison but was released the next morning on a $ 20,000 bond.

On an episode of Watch What Happens Live the following year, she took full responsibility for the actions that led to the arrest.

“I drank that night, no excuses. I stopped focusing on myself. I stopped taking time out and going to meetings because I cared about other people.

“And I stopped taking care of myself,” she told Host Bravo boss Andy.

Just months after their argument at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Kim was arrested again in August 2015 for shoplifting at a Target store in Los Angeles.

She was arrested and sent to an LA prison, but was released the next morning on $ 5,000 bail.

According to TMZ – who received pictures of Kim’s stolen goods – she grabbed reusable bags and began “charging” them with items from the DOLLAR department.

Products she took away included art supplies, makeup and children’s toys, pet crackers, and dozens of other items – which the point of sale claimed to be over $ 600.

Following her successive arrests, Bravo sacked her full-time actress and her revenue stream was stopped immediately.

Her financial troubles did not end there, however, as she has faced multiple legal cases in the years since.

In 2016, she was sued by her former stylist and assistant Paige Sanderson after she was allegedly bitten by Kim’s dog, Kingsley.

Kyle Richards, 52, was also included in the lawsuit because the alleged dog bite occurred in a house that was then owned by her.

After two years of legal battles, both Richards sisters reached an agreement with Paige in 2018 for an undisclosed sum of money.

Later in 2018, Kim was asked to pay $ 266,000 for a separate attack that took place with her dog, Kingsley, in 2015.

In court documents first obtained from The Blast, Kim’s former neighbor Kelly Crossley was awarded $ 266,092.39 in damages and $ 865 in other additional expenses after she claimed she was also bitten by the pit bull.

Sister Kyle later revealed that Kim was forced to bring Kingsley back home after the multiple incidents.

The following year, Kim’s book deal went south when she was asked to pay $ 5,000 for refusing to pay for the services of ghostwriter Alison Kingsley Baker.

In 2019, Alison claimed she failed to pay her agreed-upon ghostwriting fee for Kim’s upcoming novel, despite allegedly cashing in on her $ 300,000 book advance.

Kim’s money troubles seem to persist to this day – as The Sun exclusively revealed, she owes over $ 90,000 in unpaid state taxes.

The former child actor raised a tax lien in the amount of $ 20,762 in 2020 – which went unpaid, the California tax authority The Sun confirmed.

Interest and fees will continue to apply on both government tax liens as long as they are unaffected.

As The Sun reported last week, Kim has since moved into a modest two-bedroom apartment, a significant downgrade from her previous lavish homes.

The mother of four currently rents a two-bedroom, three-bathroom apartment in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles – where her younger sister Kyle is known to own the most expensive home in the area.

Kim’s representative did not immediately respond to The Sun’s request for comment.

We should start by saying that we are not anti-compost. Indeed we have multiple items guides you through the in and out of Composting Process. In a perfect world, everyone would have the time, energy, and space to have their own compost heap or Container, and then use the finished product to help your plants grow.

But for many people and for many reasons, the best composting intentions don’t necessarily mean actually taking the time to compost. It may sound like your free plant nutrition dreams will never come true, but it is not.

There’s a middle ground between not composting at all and a full batch of it: use leftover (uncomposted) food instead. Here are a few examples of foods that can range from nutrition to your plants, courtesy of Michelle Ullman, in an article for BobVila.com.

Banana peels can help plants develop healthy roots

The potassium found in banana peel helps plants transfer water between cells, form healthy roots, support fruit and flower growth, and ward off disease. All you have to do is bury the banana peel outside next to some flowering plants.

“Be sure to cover it with several inches of soil to prevent insect infestation or odor,” writes Ullman. “When the peel decomposes, it releases its potassium and other nutrients into the soil, which benefits the nearby plants.”

Egg shells provide calcium for plants

Egg shells are replete with calcium, which helps strengthen the plant’s cell walls. Here’s what to do with them, per Ullman:

Rinse the eggshells thoroughly, let them dry, and then mash them with a pestle or similar grinder. Then work a handful of soil bowls into the soil around your plants, whether in the flowerbed or in a bucket.

The nitrogen in coffee helps foliage grow

Using coffee grounds as a plant-based food requires a delicate balance. On the one hand, they contain a lot of nitrogen, which supports leaf development. On the other hand, too much coffee grounds can stunt plant growth due to the caffeine and acidity levels. Here’s Ullman’s advice:

To be on the safe side, never add more than a half-inch layer of coffee grounds around your plants and cover the set with an inch or two of soil to avoid compaction that could prevent water from entering the soil.

And of course, if you ever have the time, space, and / or energy to go into composting, do it. In the meantime, bury the banana peels.
