Walking is an easy way to get moving in your day, and it has mental health benefits as well. I am one of the many people who added daily walks to my routine during the pandemic and they have made my life so much better that I don’t plan to stop. But is walking enough for your body to think of it as cardio exercise?

The answer is complicated. Walking counts as cardio in some ways: it can burn calories, it increases your heart rate, and it counts for the exercise we should all be doing each week. On the other hand, it won’t improve your cardio fitness in the same way that running or an intense aerobics class would improve it. If you want to improve your endurance, you need to do more than just run.

How the calories burned while walking compared to running

Running burns more calories than walking per unit of time, but both are similar when distance is taken into account.

As a rule of thumb, you will burn around 100 calories per mile whether you run or run. In truth, however, the amount of calories burned depends on the size of your body (you burn more calories when you are taller) and how fast you run or walk. The calories per mile are slightly lower when walking. This calculator from Runtastic (in metric numbers, sorry) estimates that a 150-pound person burns 82 calories running a mile, or 115 calories running a mile.

The biggest difference is in the calories per hour: for the same 150-pound person, walking burns 261 calories an hour and running burns 714. For both calculations, I have the examples of a 20-minute mile (3 miles per hour) for the Hikers used and a 10-minute mile (6 miles per hour) for the runner. The faster you go, the higher the calories burned.

Walking cannot replace “vigorous” cardio

Each training intensity has its own advantages. According to major health organizations (including the CDC, WHO, and AHA), we should all get at least 150 minutes of “moderate” exercise or 75 minutes of “vigorous” exercise per week. You can mix and match with the idea that every minute of intense workouts counts twice.

Where does walking fall into this recommendation? Well, the American Heart Association Are defined moderate exercise as that where your heart rate is between 50-70% of your maximum and vigorous exercise as between 70-85% of your maximum. Walking is generally in the moderate range, so you need to do twice as much – counted in minutes – as if you had opted for more vigorous cardio.

Walking doesn’t just have to be a walk

The distinction between walking and running is mechanical: if you always have at least one foot on the ground, go. Instead, if your gait has a small crack as you move from foot to foot, run. (Jogging is just a slow run.)

It’s often easier to maintain a higher intensity (and heart rate) while running than when walking, but that’s not always true. When hiking up a mountain, your heart rate can easily get into the “strong” zone. And if you’re a runner efficient enough, maybe you can go for one slow jogging while keeping your heart rate low in the “moderate” range.

When planning your workout, keep intensity in mind: measure your heart rate if you’re not sure where you are falling. You can use a tracker like a Fitbit or Apple Watch to do this, but you can also just place two fingers on the side of your neck and count the beats of your heart rate. If Your max is 200 and you are counting 150 beats per minute, you are at 75% of your maximum heart rate.

You may have a higher heart rate than you thought while walking – not impossible if you are a beginner or if your walks take you over hilly terrain. If you want a harder cardio workout, you can run faster or choose a different type of exercise, e.g. B. Cycling or dancing to get your heart rate up. Does the use of a period in a text convey emotions?

When we end individual text messages by starting a new message, there are no additional emotions associated with it, explains McCulloch. “Since you need to send the message in order for the person to receive the message, the act of sending it has no meaning beyond ‘I sent it’,” she says.

If we end texts with dots – regardless of whether we recognize or intend to do so – this can lead to an emotional meaning. Time doesn’t have the same emotional impact when we write on paper. In this case, this is just the standard way of splitting different sentences. But in text messages, dots take on additional connotations, says McCulloch: “Anytime you do something that isn’t the default, people tend to interpret it as [meaningful]. ”

In the case of the period at the end of a text message, we usually interpret the punctuation to convey seriousness, formality, or a decrease in the pitch of your voice. “The aggression, or passive aggressiveness, comes when that seriousness collides with the message that is being said,” explains McCulloch. It provides an example of text that says “I feel awful”. Using a period at the end of this message reinforces the fact that you are feeling terrible. Or when you write to someone who says, “I just don’t know.” If you end this message with a period, it will let the person know that you are really sad and really at a loss.

According to McCulloch, the risk of sounding passively aggressive is if you say something in a text message that is usually positive, but you put that “seriousness marker” – the period – at the end. Consider the following texts:

According to McCulloch, the message that ends with the exclamation mark conveys that the person sending the message is excited to speak to the recipient. The message without punctuation is neutral. Why are our brains doing this to us? What use is this unnecessary fear? McCulloch says the confusion arises when we use periods for messages with only one utterance that do not require periods to be executed. (For example, the “OK” texts above.) In these cases, we have the option of ending the message with something that conveys arousal or positivity (like an exclamation point!), Or just drop the punctuation altogether and make it neutral . The American Trucking Associations (ATA) lobbying group for the country’s major trucking employers has been making this point since the 1980s, but the shelves somehow stayed full. In a capitalist system in which you can pay people to do basically anything, how is it even possible to have a labor shortage over several decades? There is only one problem: “These messages flying out there are very misleading and inaccurate,” said Karrie Grundy, director of recruiting for the company. His organization represents more than 150,000 mostly self-employed truck drivers across the country. “We have millions of people trained to be heavy-duty truck drivers who aren’t currently working as heavy-duty truck drivers because the entry-level jobs are terrible,” said Steve Viscelli, a sociologist at the University of Pennsylvania who studies trucks -Industry. Moderna said Tuesday that its Covid-19 vaccine was 100% effective in a study in adolescents ages 12 to 17. This makes it the second attempt after Pfizer that has demonstrated a high level of effectiveness in younger age groups.

The company plans to ask the Food and Drug Administration to expand emergency use of its Covid vaccine to teenagers early next month. If approved, it would likely dramatically increase the number of recordings available to middle and high school students before the next school year. Pfizer and German partner BioNTech were approved to use their vaccine for 12 to 15 year olds earlier this month.

“We are encouraged that mRNA-1273 is highly effective in preventing COVID-19 in adolescents,” said Stephane Bancel, CEO of Moderna, in a press release. “We continue to strive to do our part to end the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The two-dose vaccine, given four weeks apart, is already approved for adults.

The phase 2/3 study the company cited on Tuesday included more than 3,700 teenagers. No cases of Covid were observed in participants who received two doses of the vaccine, while four cases were observed in the placebo group, according to the company.

No significant safety concerns were identified, and the side effects are generally consistent with those seen in a previous adult study, the company said. The most common side effects after the second dose were headache, fatigue, muscle pain, and chills, Moderna said.

The new data comes less than three weeks after the company announced in an earnings report that early data showed the shot was 96% effective against Covid in teens ages 12-17. These data were based on those who had received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The company said Tuesday that the shot in the study was 93% effective after one dose. These extinguished tomatoes are wildly aromatic. They have a deep, caramelized sweetness – almost like tomato paste – with the intense, slightly rosy notes of a sun-dried tomato minus the overwhelming tartness. They spread like a hearty jam and are great as a sandwich filling, especially if you’re craving something warmer, sweeter, and rib-like Tomato toast.

Cook time is pretty long for an air fryer recipe, but it’s still pretty short considering another of my favorite roasted tomato recipes calls for it one night in the oven.
