Nies is one of four former Theranos employees interviewed by CNBC ahead of the Holmes trial. The others, who didn’t want their names to be used, say they are still afraid of retaliation from Holmes and former Theranos President Sunny Balwani.

Holmes and Balwani have pleaded not guilty to dozens of wire fraud and conspiracy cases. The trial against Balwani will not take place until next year. Holmes and Balwani’s lawyers have not responded to requests for comment.

Nies joined Theranos in March 2015 for $ 185,000 per year as senior manager, customer service and call center operations at the company’s headquarters in Palo Alto, California, according to a letter of acceptance he delivered to CNBC. Theranos recruited him from another San Diego health company at the age of 41.

Another employee who worked at Theranos quit after it became clear that the company was a “house of cards” and asked not to be named for fear that Holmes and Balwani might retaliate.

“That’s what happens when you’re working to change things,” Holmes told host Jim Cramer. “First they think you’re crazy, then they fight you, then you change the world.”

Nies, who left Theranos after just a year, stays in touch with some of his former colleagues. He says they “just want to put it in the rearview mirror. I got into a rental car Wednesday morning and drove from Montreal (where I live) to New York City after recently deciding to dip my toe in the waters of social reintegration. It’s been 17 months since I left Montreal. That’s 75 weeks. That’s 527 days. That’s 45,499,949 seconds in which I don’t do what I used to do with great regularity: travel.

As someone whose primary way of coping with life is … oh, you know, just going, this would have seemed impossible to me before the Quar. But I took the lockdown seriously and seriously, and thankfully, thanks to my second primary life coping – withdrawn and avoidant complacency – it wasn’t that bad staying inside.

The ride itself was familiar and pleasantly uneventful – in fact, downright enjoyable. Few things for me embody freedom like a car with a full tank, an open road, and a playlist ready to be played. Maybe it would be like riding a bike (or, um, driving a car).

Oh sweet optimism, why am I preoccupied with you? As soon as I entered the parking garage and began the winding descent into the inferno, which is the Avis parking space, I realized that I was wrong.

So now I’m in New York, like a creature that has just hatched and is trying to take its first cautious steps into a world that is chaotic and presumptuous. Or like Ice Age Brendan Frasier when he thaws in Blast From the Past. Has New York always been that loud? This hustle and bustle? So hot? Have the lights always been this bright? Have sidewalks always been this full? It’s a steroidal blur of sensory immersion, like trying to get on a speeding train.

I checked into my hotel room straight away and haven’t gone since. (The liquid melts the ice a little, creating more space in the glass so you can get maximum crushed ice capacity.) Add more ice and pour the rest of the liquid into the ice-filled glass. Add the angostura that creates a float – use as much as you like … I like a lot – then top up with more crushed ice. Take a deep breath and take a long sip. Exhale. Enjoy. It will be alright. President Joe Biden said U.S. regulators are considering giving Covid-19 booster vaccinations five months after completing the primary series and postponing the expected schedule for a third vaccination by about three months.

Biden, who spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Friday, said health officials are considering following this country’s example on boosters.

“We are considering the advice you have given that we should start earlier,” Biden said, adding that officials are discussing whether the schedule should be shorter. “It should only be five months and that is being discussed.”

Booster vaccination approval is expected to come sometime around Labor Day after federal health officials have time to review data from other countries.

The director of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Francis Collins said last week that data released by Israel on the effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines over time caused US health leaders to reconsider their position on vaccine booster vaccinations. Israel released new data on Aug. 16 showing a reduction in the effectiveness of Pfizer’s Covid vaccine against serious illness in people 65 and over who were fully vaccinated in January or February.

Israel released more data on Sunday showing that a booster dose offers four times as much protection from infection by the Delta variant than the previous two-dose therapy in people over 60, Reuters reported, citing data from the Israeli Ministry of Health. The booster dose was also five to six times more effective in preventing hospitalization or serious illness.

About 1.5 million Israeli residents have received a booster dose of a Covid-19 vaccine.

Later in the day, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki explained Biden’s comments, saying he would rely on CDC and FDA officials to make changes to formal U.S. health guidelines, which currently state that booster doses are given after eight months should be.

“So I want to be very clear. If they were to change their leadership based on data for a certain group, he would of course stick to it,” Psaki said at a press conference on Friday. “But for the folks at home watching, for all of you reporting this, nothing has changed about the eight month timeline in relation to the boosters.”

The distribution of the booster vaccinations is expected to begin on September 20 pending final approval from the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Biden government and vaccine manufacturers have indicated that there should be enough doses for any fully vaccinated adult aiming for a third dose.
