LONDON – The European Medicines Agency said Tuesday the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine had possible links to rare blood clots but reiterated that its benefits still outweighed the risks.

“The EMA’s Safety Committee (PRAC) concluded that a warning of unusual blood clots with low platelets should be added to the product information for the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine,” the agency said in a press release.

“Health professionals and those receiving the vaccine should be aware of the possibility of very rare cases of blood clots combined with low platelet levels within three weeks of vaccination.”

The EMA examined all available evidence, including eight reports from the United States of serious cases of unusual blood clots, one of which had a fatal outcome. As of April 7, more than 7 million people in the United States had received the vaccine.

The US Food and Drug Administration advised states earlier this month to suspend the use of J & J’s shot “out of caution”. As a result, the pharmaceutical company decided to delay the launch of its vaccine in Europe while regulators assessed all risks. On Tuesday, the company confirmed that it would resume deliveries to the block after being reviewed by the EMA.

The EMA said last week that when they reviewed the latest details, it was still believing that the vaccine’s benefits outweighed the risks.

The J&J shot, which only requires one, was initially lit in green on March 11 in the European Union. It remains to be seen how different countries will interpret the latest guidelines from the EMA. France has already indicated that it will only use the vaccine in people over 55 years of age.

This isn’t the first problem with blood clots and a Covid-19 vaccine.

More than a dozen European countries stopped using the AstraZeneca shot in March after some people who received the shot reported unusual incidents of blood clots, 18 of which were fatal.

The EMA reviewed the cases and also said the vaccine was safe and should be used in the fight against the coronavirus.

However, a few days later, the EMA also said there was a “possible association with very rare cases of unusual blood clots with low platelets” and should therefore be listed as a “very rare side effect” for the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Some countries have adjusted the introduction of this vaccine and decided to only give it to people over the age of 60, and Denmark took it a step further by stopping its use entirely.

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, more than 103 million doses have been administered in the EU to date.

Correction: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advised states earlier this month to suspend the use of J & J’s shot. An earlier version incorrectly characterized the move.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will address the nation in his annual State of the Nation speech on Wednesday. This speech will take place amid mounting tensions with Ukraine and a hunger strike by dissident Alexei Navalny.

Last week there were further reports that Russian troops were gathering on the border with Ukraine, possibly preparing for military action.

Navalny, who is on hunger strike in a Russian prison, fell dangerously ill and was taken to a prison hospital. The news sparked warnings from the US that there would be “consequences” if Russia let Navalny die in prison.

In addition, Russia was accused of orchestrating an attack on a Czech arms dump in 2014. The Czech Republic expelled 18 Russian diplomats this week. Russia denies that two of its military intelligence agents – the same men believed to have carried out a nerve agent attack on a former spy in the UK in 2018 – carried out the Czech attack, but the news still added to the negative news flow surrounding Putin’s Russia .

Over the weekend, his doctor warned that Navalny was at risk of a heart attack or kidney failure. Doctors had been unable to visit Navalny in prison but said medical tests on his family showed he was dangerously ill and “could die at any moment”.

The US government has warned the Russian government not to let Navalny die in custody, adding that there will be “consequences”.

Last summer, Navalny was medically evacuated to Germany from a Russian hospital after being poisoned by a chemical agent on nerves. The German government said toxicological reports showed “clear evidence” that Navalny was exposed to a nerve agent belonging to the Novichok family, developed by the Soviet Union.

Toxicological tests carried out in France and Sweden also came to the same conclusion. The Kremlin has repeatedly denied playing a role in Navalny’s poisoning.

Suneeta Reddy of Apollo Hospitals said that around 122 million doses of vaccines have been given since it started in India in January.

“We currently believe that we should achieve some herd immunity at this rate by September,” she told CNBC’s Street Signs Asia on Monday. India has the second highest number of coronavirus cases worldwide with more than 15.3 million reported cases and at least 178,000 Covid-19 deaths. According to Reddy, state governments work closely with the private sector and there are plans for vaccinations. The country’s health ministry said Tuesday morning that 109 million people received at least one dose of the vaccine and 17 million received the second shot.

According to Reddy, hospitals provide around 60% of their capacity for Covid-19 patients and also use hotel rooms to care for patients.

“What we’re seeing is … a pretty mild version of the virus, so it requires a lot less ventilation than we’ve seen before,” Reddy said.

“There are protocols in place, we have adequate medication. Some states may be starved of oxygen, but we’re not seeing a shortage in the entire Apollo system,” she said.
