US stock futures rose sharply early on Monday morning as government bond yields continued to decline from their highs last week.

Dow futures rose 192 points. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures also traded in positive territory.

The yield on 10-year government bonds fell to 1.405%. Prices move in the opposite direction to returns.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advisory Board unanimously decided on Sunday to recommend the use of Johnson & Johnson’s one-off Covid-19 vaccine for people aged 18 and over. The company expects to initially ship 4 million cans.

Last week stocks were put under pressure by rising interest rates. Higher interest rates can jeopardize the dominance of stocks as bonds are viewed as less risky. The 10-year benchmark’s return was 1.6% on Thursday but fell to around 1.41% on Friday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 lost 1.7% and 2.5%, respectively, between Monday and Friday.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell more than 4% over the week and suffered its worst one-day sell-off since October on Thursday. Technology companies rely on being able to borrow money at low interest rates to invest in future growth.

“The volatility in the bond markets rose to its highest level since April. Until a calm and new high level for the yields emerges, this is the main focus for investors,” Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist of the Leuthold Group, told CNBC.

Key averages rose in February on a strong earnings season, positive news on the vaccine launch and hopes for another stimulus package.

The House passed a $ 1.9 trillion Covid Relief Act, the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, early Saturday. The Senate will now consider the legislation.

The Dow was up 3.15% in February for its third positive month in four years. The S&P 500 was up 2.61% and the Nasdaq Composite was up nearly 1% for the fourth positive month in a row.

The final February reading for Markit’s US Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index for February comes out on Monday at 9:45 a.m. (CET). Economists polled by Dow Jones expect a value of 58.5, just like they did in December of 58.5.

One of the best projectors in 2021

Our readers know what’s going on. When we ask a question like “what’s the best projector?” We know we’re getting a good mix of thoughtful answers and great product recommendations. As expected, we received both this time to get a comprehensive and perfect overview of the life of the projector. The most interesting piece of advice was to stick with 1080p for now until 4K has reached its full potential.

Until there is a proper native 4K projector with a full 32Gbps HDMI 2.1 port, I wouldn’t consider upgrading from my current 1080P system.

Even at the last trade fairs, no new projectors were announced that even meet the full HDMI 2.1 specification. This is especially a problem if you’ve just received that new PS5, Xbox, or PC GPU and want to get that 4K @ 120Hz output. – – ImALeafOnTheWind

This is a great tip for anyone looking to spend thousands of dollars on a 4K projector right now. However, some of our users have been equally advocating 4K. So it depends on what you want to use it for. If you’re not trying to get the most out of next generation systems and just want to watch high quality movies, there are plenty of great options for you. Here’s what our readers had to say.

I’m new to the projector game, but I’m a huge fan of mine Epson 3200. I felt it hit the sweet spot of cost for performance. It’s pretty much an entry-level 4K projector (albeit 4K pixel shift). It’s 3LCD so you don’t stand a chance of the rainbow effect that a small subgroup of DLP users notice. And the input lag is acceptably low for gaming (I play a decent amount of Warzone with no issues). The room I use it in is mostly light controlled (just one window with an almost darkened curtain), but it’s a multipurpose bonus room so we often look at things with lights. – – ItsDeke

Epsons EF-12 FTW! Instant on / off and excellent color rendering and pretty bright for the relatively low lumens – HDR and good speakers are my main reasons too. Autofocus and a relatively short throw range are also nice. This is a projector that you would place on a coffee table in front of you, not behind you. – – dt100

My projector, which was bought in 2013, is still running strong (changed a couple of lamps on the way, running costs). In my setup (120 “screen in a special room) the picture is still great (I also own a LG 65” 4K and am still happy with the 1080p projector). Yes, will probably upgrade to 4K when prices drop, but if I recommended a projector today it would be a 1080p. – – medhat1

I have this Optoma HD39HDR. My projector setup is my main setup. I don’t have normal television. We use this projector for everything. What I really liked are the brightness and response time. I play video games on it so quick response time was a must and pretty much why I pulled the trigger on this one. I don’t have a darkened living area this is in and I can still watch during the day (although it’s obviously much better at night). – – DetFanChiGuy

Moira Rose would be so proud!

Schitt’s Creek Star Catherine O’Hara won the award for best actress in a comedy or musical at the 2021 Golden Globes. And believe it or not, it was her very first win at the Globes for her iconic twist as the matriarch of the Rose family in popular pop TV series.

And of course she held her acceptance speech with a martini in hand.

“Thank you thank you!” O’Hara gushed as she practically received her awards before saying she was “happy and earnestly indebted” to her on-screen husband and son. Eugene and Daniel Levywho created Schitt’s Creek.

“From day one, they treated me as if something like this could happen!” She said. “You wrote an inspiring, fun, beautiful family love story in which I was allowed to wear a hundred wigs and speak like an alien. From the first reading through, where no one had to fake a laugh, to the last day on the set, everyone except me , had to hold back her tears. It is an experience that will forever be dear to my heart and I am proud to be part of her family. “

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, signed Johnson & Johnson’s one-off Covid-19 vaccine for those ages 18 and older on Sunday as the federal government prepares to ship millions of doses this week.

Walensky’s green light comes after a CDC advisory panel unanimously voted to recommend the use of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine.

“Today is an encouraging step towards an end to the # COVID19 pandemic,” wrote Walensky on Twitter. “I have now signed the recommendation of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) confirming the safety and effectiveness of Janssen’s COVID-19 vaccine for people aged 18 and over.”

The federal government can now begin shipping cans to locations across the country. The ACIP met in an emergency meeting to review the vaccine dates, which took place on Saturday became the third shot to receive emergency clearance from the Food and Drug Administration.

Dr. Richard Nettles, vice president of medical affairs at J&J, told lawmakers Tuesday that the company was ready to ship nearly 4 million doses once it receives emergency approval. He added that the company expects to have 20 million cans ready by the end of March.

The introduction of the J&J shot could be a boon to the U.S. vaccine supply. While the new vaccine showed signs of being less effective at preventing Covid-19 in clinical trials when compared to Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, the J&J shot was 100% effective at preventing deaths and hospitalizations, caused by Covid-19 in clinical trials.

The level of protection of the J&J vaccine against Covid-19 in studies varied regionally, according to FDA documents released on Wednesday. About a month after inoculation, the shot showed 72% effectiveness in the US, 61% in Latin America and 64% in South Africa, where variant B.1.351 is spreading rapidly.

In particular, the FDA review found the vaccine was significantly less effective in people aged 60 and over who also had comorbidities like diabetes or heart disease. However, the agency found that the data was too sparse for any conclusions to be drawn.

In contrast, in clinical studies, Pfizer’s vaccine has been found to be 95% effective against Covid-19, while Moderna’s vaccine is around 94% effective. Infectious disease experts pointed out that J & J’s numbers cannot be used as a head-to-head comparison with the other two vaccines because it is a single dose and the company’s study was conducted when more infections, as well as new, more contagious variants occurred.

However, federal health officials have indicated that the one-off J&J regime offers unique logistical benefits that could make it ideal for hard-to-reach populations.

J & J’s vaccine “makes it easier to use in many contexts,” said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases of the CDC, told the Journal of the American Medical Association during a question and answer session Friday. “I suspect that much of the national health consideration given to these vaccines is more about the ease of use of the J&J vaccine and how it might be better suited to some populations.”

J&J has announced that it will ship the vaccine, which contains five doses per vial, at 36 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit. In comparison, Pfizer’s vaccine typically has to be stored in ultra-cold freezers, which are between minus 112 and minus 76 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the FDA recently announced that it could be stored in pharmacies for up to two weeks at standard freezing temperatures. Moderna vaccine must be shipped at 13 to 5 degrees above zero Fahrenheit.

Sometimes birds fly into windows. In other cases, they can perch on the outside of your windowsill and peck a little. It might seem like they’re trying to get your attention, and if you’ve been stuck in the last year, you might even be tempted to let it in for a quick chat. (But not.)

And then there are some birds that return day after day and aggressively peck at your window as if you owe them money. Not only are they annoying, but pecking could hurt their beak and windows. Here’s how to prevent this from happening.

Illustration for article titled How To Prevent Birds From Pecking Your Windows

Why do birds peck at windows?

Every year during the mating season of the birds – from May to August – male birds try to find a perfect place for their new nest. And once they do, they protect it as well as the area around it. Sometimes this area is in a person’s back yard, including the back of a house.

This is where pecking comes in. Per hunker::

When light hits window glass at certain angles, a nearby bird can see its own reflection. A territorial man perceives this reflection as another man, a serious threat to his space. Men with this territorial mindset can attack other reflective surfaces as well, such as B. the side mirrors of a vehicle.

But it’s # NotAllBirds – some are more prone to window pecking than others. Here are the species found in North America::

  • Northern Cardinals
  • American robins
  • Wild turkeys
  • Northern Mockingbirds
  • American goldfinch
  • Ruffed wood grouse
  • Titmice California Towhees

How do you stop pecking?

The key here is that the windows are less shiny on the outside and therefore reflective. Start by identifying the spot the bird usually pecks, then try any of these tactics as well Courtesy of Hunker::

  • A window screen is temporarily stuck over this area with adhesive tape or tape or a fine mesh material that allows light to pass through, but prevents possible reflection.
  • Non-glossy plastic sheets, such as those used for a drape, will also work.
  • For even better results, glue or pin the plastic to the top of the window and let it hang freely and move in the wind. The movement will Scare birds Path. Since this isn’t exactly a do-it-yourselfer, you may want to limit the plastic fluttering to windows that face off to the side or the back yard.

WASHINGTON – Iran on Sunday declined an invitation from the world powers that signed the 2015 nuclear deal to discuss the regime’s possible return to the negotiating table. This was a major setback to the Biden government’s efforts to revive the agreement.

“Given the recent actions and declarations by the United States and three European powers, Iran does not consider it time to hold an informal meeting with these countries proposed by the EU foreign policy,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh Information from the state media in Tehran.

The White House said Sunday that the Biden administration was disappointed with Iran’s decision to skip the informal meeting with the US and the other 2015 Pact signatories – France, Germany, the UK, Russia and China.

“While we are disappointed with Iran’s response, we remain ready to engage in meaningful diplomacy to bring about a mutual return to JCPOA commitments,” a senior administrative official told NBC News.

“We will consult with our P5 + 1 partners about the best way to go,” said the official, referring to the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany.

Biden’s government has previously stated that it intends to revive the nuclear deal but will not suspend sanctions until Tehran returns to compliance. Tehran has refused to negotiate as long as the US sanctions remain in place.

The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) brokered by the Obama administration lifted sanctions against Iran, which had paralyzed its economy and roughly halved its oil exports. In exchange for billions of dollars in sanction relief, Iran agreed to dismantle part of its nuclear program and open its facilities to wider international inspections.

The US and its European allies believe Iran has ambitions to develop an atomic bomb. Tehran has denied this claim.

In 2018, then-President Donald Trump kept an election promise and withdrew the United States from the JCPOA in what was dubbed the “worst deal ever”. After Washington pulled out of the landmark nuclear deal, other signatories to the pact have tried to keep the deal alive.

In a letter published by Sunda ‘, Republican senators warned President Joe Biden not to rejoin the 2015 nuclear deal because it was “fraught with problems” and urged a broader deal instead.

“The scope of an agreement with Iran must address all Iranian behavior, including regional terrorism, ballistic missiles and the detention of US nationals. It is not surprising that Iranian proxies support Assad’s ongoing atrocities in Syria, attack our forces and diplomats in Iraq have pushed Lebanon to the brink of collapse, threatened our Israeli and Gulf partners and contributed to the world’s largest humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen, “wrote Sens. Jim Inhofe from Oklahoma, Jim Risch from Idaho, Marco Rubio from Florida. Pat Toomey from Pennsylvania and Rob Portman from Ohio in a joint letter to Biden.

“Despite the criticism of the ‘max pressure’ campaign, it cannot be denied that it has cost Iran its malicious activities and is now offering your government an opportunity to get a better deal from Iran. We know Iran cannot be trusted to honor its commitments, “wrote the senators.

Washington’s ongoing stalemate with Tehran

Washington’s tense relationship with Tehran deteriorated several times under the Trump administration.

Last year the US carried out an air strike that killed Qasem Soleimani, Iran’s top military commander. Iran retaliated by firing at least a dozen missiles from its territory on Jan. 7 at two military bases in Iraq that housed US and coalition forces.

A day later from the White House, Trump said Iran appeared to be “stepping back” and warned Tehran to give up its nuclear ambitions.

After the deadly US strike, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the Trump administration had committed an “act of terrorism”.

Soleimani’s death led the regime to further reduce compliance with the international nuclear pact. In January 2020, Iran said it would no longer curtail its uranium enrichment capacity or its nuclear research.

In October, the United States unilaterally imposed UN sanctions on Tehran as part of a snapback process that other members of the UN Security Council had previously stated that Washington was not empowered to carry out because it withdrew from the nuclear deal in 2018.

A month later, a top Iranian scientist was murdered near Tehran, leading the Iranian government to claim that Israel, with US support, was behind the attack.

In the summer of 2019, a series of attacks in the Persian Gulf set the US and Iran on the way to a more intense confrontation.

In June, US officials said an Iranian surface-to-air missile shot down an American military surveillance drone over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran said the plane was over its territory. That strike came a week after the US blamed Iran for attacks on two oil tankers in the Persian Gulf region and after four tankers were attacked in May.

In June, the US imposed new sanctions on Iranian military leaders who were held responsible for shooting down the drone. The measures were also aimed at blocking financial resources for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

Tensions rose again in September 2019 when the US blamed Iran for strikes in Saudi Arabia at the world’s largest crude oil processing plant and oil field.

This attack forced the kingdom to cut its manufacturing operations in half and sparked the largest surge in crude oil prices in decades and renewed concerns about a new war in the Middle East. Iran claims it was not behind the attacks.

The battle between Facebook and Australia to spread news on the platform came to a head. The conflict began in 2018 when an Australian investigation found that Google and Facebook were the dominant forces in the country’s media and advertising market. As a result, the government suggested that companies should pay for the content they display, such as news reports, as it benefits the giants of Silicon Valley compared to the media itself. After Australia threatened to completely remove the search engine from the country, Google agreed to pay Rupert Murdoch’s media empire News Corp for content on February 18. However, Facebook has chosen to block all messages from its platform in Australia to prevent users from seeing or sharing the content. However, it wasn’t long before Facebook overturned the decision and agreed to resume the news content following changes to the law proposed by the Australian government. The municipal water company Emasesa in Seville is focusing on green energy and solving the city’s orange problem. The city in southern Spain is known for the bright oranges that are scattered on its 48,000 trees in spring. Seville’s trees attract tourists and produce 5,700 tons of fruit, but most of them are rotten. By winter, the oranges are wreaking havoc in the city as they fall on paths and streets, and the local government will have to employ around 200 people to clean them up. But now the city’s fruits are said to be used to generate electricity using the methane that the fruits give off when they decompose. This clean electricity will initially be used to operate one of the city’s water treatment plants. In the past few weeks, many parts of the country have seen serious winter weather – including areas where this type of snow and ice is not normally seen. And finally, the snow and ice will melt, creating more water than usual, and some homes can’t handle it. Fortunately, there are a few steps you can take to prevent water from getting into your home and flooding your basement. Here’s what to know.

Illustration for article titled How to Prevent Your Basement from Flooding When Snow and Ice Start to Melt

How can snow cause cellar floods?

You may not associate flooding with snow, but there are times when the weather warms up quickly.

This is what happens loudly Flood Services Canada::

Melting snow basement floods are caused when snow collects around the foundation of your home or property in winter and melts as the temperature warms. Combined with spring rainfall, this buildup of water can get into the ground and seep into the groundwater, causing flooding in your basement. This won’t be the case with every property – it depends on whether your foundation passes a “stress test”. If the foundation is susceptible to groundwater ingress, the chances of having water in your basement increase.

This is how you prevent your basement from being flooded in winter

The best way to protect your basement from flooding is to shovel the snow at least three feet away from the foundation before it can melt. Here are some other tips, courtesy of On-site restoration::

  • If your home is on an incline or hill, shovel snow so it doesn’t roll towards your home when it melts. This ensures that melting snow will flow away from, and not into, your home.
  • Remove snow from your roof to avoid excessive buildup. This will prevent a significant amount of water from flowing through your gutters during thawing.
  • Keep the drainage areas around your home free of snow and ice. This ensures that melting snow drains properly and prevents backups.
  • Examine the basement walls for cracks. This also includes sealing around windows. Make the necessary repairs to prevent water from entering your basement.
  • Review your landscape before the snow arrives to make sure the ground is sloping away from your home. If necessary, add additional soil to allow the melting snow to drain off your foundation.
  • Check your roof for ice and snow build-up. This can cause ice damage that can allow melting snow to seep through your roof.
  • Check your gutters and downspouts. In the fall, remove leaves and other debris regularly as this can cause clogging. Add downspout extensions to draw melting snow away from your home.
  • Test your sump pump in the winter to make sure it works properly when the snow melts. Pour a bucket of water into the sump to turn on the pump. If it does not turn on, unplug the power cord from the outlet and investigate the problem.

If water ends up in your basement, don’t ignore it. Keep the area where the water got as clean and dry as possible.
