In keeping with the CDC director, elevating the masks necessities is a mistake

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, Joe Biden’s chief executive officer for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listens as Biden announces candidates and officers for his health and coronavirus response teams during a press conference at his transitional headquarters Wilmington, Delaware, December 8, 2020.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Sunday it was too early for states to stop wearing masks as coronavirus cases and deaths are high in the US on a daily basis

“We still have 100,000 cases a day. We still have between 1,500 and 3,500 deaths a day,” Walensky said during an interview on CBS’s Face the Nation. “Yet we see some communities loosening some of their mitigation strategies. We are nowhere outside of the forest.”

As the spread of the virus slows in the US and the introduction of the vaccine speeds up, states have begun to relax restrictions. Republican governors in Montana and Iowa lifted statewide mask wear requirements this month. North Dakota’s mask mandate expired in January.

In New York, Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo recently allowed indoor dining at 25% capacity despite the high risk of contagion, and opened stadiums and arenas with limited capacity.

According to a CNBC analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University, the US reports an average of more than 93,000 cases per day, a 22% decrease from the previous week and more than 3,000 deaths per day, an increase of 4% from the previous week.

The daily average of deaths in Covid may have increased over the past week as some states have conducted audits and found previously unreported deaths.

More than 480,000 people in the U.S. have died from the virus and more than 27 million have been infected.

Health experts fear that the rapid spread of more contagious variants could lead to a renewed spike in cases and deaths in the United States. Cases of the contagious variant, first found in the UK and known as B.1.1.7, double roughly every 10 days across the world in land.

“If we loosen these mitigation strategies with increasing communicable variants, we could be in a much more difficult place,” Walensky said. “Now is the time not to let go of our watch. Now is the time to double up.”

Health officials are urging Americans to tighten and double the masks, which offers significant protection against the transmission of viruses. Recent studies by the CDC suggest that firmly worn surgical masks or doubling up with a surgical and cloth mask reduce the risk of transmission by up to 96%.

“We need to get our communities back to normal functioning before we can think about abandoning our mitigation strategies,” said Walensky.

Getting an appointment for a COVID-19 vaccine is hard enough, but for some people, this is just the first of many challenges in the process. Many people are not fortunate enough to have their own car or live in a city where they can walk or use public transport to get to their vaccination appointment (if that’s an option they are comfortable with).

And even if they have friends, family or neighbors whom they would normally love to drive to their appointments, some may do so politely (and with a lot of guilt) out of concern for the virus and rejecting possible transmission.

Now some people in certain cities who get their vaccine at a Walgreen have another option: to take it a free crossing on her appointment. Here’s what you should know about this new policy:

(Of course, that doesn’t guarantee we’ll all get appointments there, but it’s an interesting / horrible fact that we thought you’d want to know.)

Uber and Walgreens are also receiving support from the National Urban League to identify the areas with major transport barriers to vaccine access.

Even so, she stops revealing all of her secrets. For the first few years after their wedding, she politely declined to ask when they would procreate. But by 2017 she was so tired of people researching what might or might not happen in her womb that she gave a brutally honest response that was supposed to stop all inquiries. She revealed her series of miscarriages and wrote in her book, “For three years my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant – I was either about to go into an IVF cycle in the middle of an IVF cycle. Or out of one IVF cycle coming out. “

Then she made it clear that that is all she would say on the subject. In any case, if she is discovered with a newborn, she will take care of it. Until then, she told E! Messages: “If we are or if we are not, that’s absolutely our thing.”

So now they are and as promised, she addresses it. McConnell votes for the acquittal, however says “no query” Trump, who’s accountable for the rebellion

0

Minutes after the “not guilty” vote in Donald Trump’s impeachment proceedings, Senate Minority Chairman Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. Said the former president was clearly responsible for the deadly Capitol riot.

“There is no question that Trump” is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day, “said McConnell shortly after the Senate acquitted Trump of instigating the attack.” No question. “

But “the question is contentious,” said McConnell, because Trump, as a former president, “has no constitutional right to convict”.

“After much deliberation, I believe that the best reading of the Constitution shows that Article 2 Section 4 exhausts the group of people who can lawfully be tried, tried or convicted,” McConnell said.

“It’s the president, it’s the vice-president and civil servants. We have no power to convict a former incumbent who is now a private individual,” he said.

While 57 out of 100 senators found Trump guilty, the chamber fell below the two-thirds threshold required for a conviction. Seven Republican senators, along with all Democrats and Independents, voted to condemn Trump.

The House indicted Trump on January 13, a week before the end of his term in office, of an article on “incitement to rebellion.” The Democrats had pressured McConnell, who was the majority leader at the time, to quickly open a lawsuit before Trump left the White House. However, the trial itself didn’t begin until nearly three weeks after President Joe Biden was sworn in.

On Tuesday, 44 Republican Senators, including McConnell, voted that the Senate was constitutionally not even responsible for conducting a trial against a former president.

However, in his post-vote speech, McConnell endorsed the view that “President Trump is still liable for everything he did during his tenure”.

“He hasn’t gotten away with anything yet,” McConnell said, noting, “we have a criminal justice system in this country. We have civil trials. And former presidents are not immune to being.” [held] accountable by both. “

McConnell, who previously stated that Trump provoked the crowd of his supporters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, also pushed back some of the arguments made by Trump’s defense team during the trial.

“The problem is not just the moderate language spoken by the president on Jan. 6,” McConnell said, “but the whole atmosphere of impending disaster,” including “the increasingly fierce myths of a landslide election that was somehow stolen.”

Trump’s lawyers had argued extensively that what the former president had said at a pre-insurrection rally was an ordinary political speech protected by the First Amendment. McConnell argued, however, that other examples of cutting-edge political rhetoric “are different from what we’ve seen” than Trump.

Before McConnell spoke, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y., railed against the Republicans who voted in favor of the acquittal.

“There was only one correct judgment in this process: guilty,” said Schumer.

“This was about electing a country before Donald Trump. And 43 Republican members voted for Trump,” said Schumer.

Easy methods to make a matador with pineapple, lime, and tequila

It’s snowing in Portland, Oregon and I’m thrilled (for now). As someone who was born in Mississippi and later lived in Los Angeles and Florida, I’m always fascinated by fluffy white things that fall from the sky, at least until it takes “too long” and I feel trapped in the slick frozen streets. (It doesn’t snow that much in Portland, so the city won’t be ready for it for more than a few days.)

Illustration for article titled Bring Some Sunshine To Your Frosty Weekend With The Matador

You’d think such weather calls for hot cocoa and mulled wine, but lots of snow means I get the heat up and running, and constant heat leaves me dehydrated and craving for juicy, thirst-quenching libations. (I understand alcohol is the opposite of moisture, but a cold, shaken cocktail is much more refreshing than a hot, wine-based wine.)

Fortunately, I stocked up on way too many things at Trader Joe last week, including a carton of pineapple juice (a favorite of my tea-totaling friend). He drank most of it last night but left just enough to make a couple of matadors, a Trader Vic cocktail that I read about recently over on punch.

This drink is incredibly hot – almost too hot – but somehow it works. Tequila always plays well with lime and pineapple, and the juice of the latter offers just enough sweetness to keep the acidity in check. Punch recommends shaking over shaved ice, but regular broken ice will work too. Just be sure to shake hard and long.

To make a matador you will need:

  • 1 ounce tequila
  • 2 ounces pineapple juice
  • 3/4 ounce lime juice

Pour everything into a shaker filled with cracked or shaved ice and shake it until it is very cold. Strain into a coupé or similar container. Sip while looking at some snow and repeat the process until you feel encouraged to step out into that snow.

WHO is working to comprise Ebola within the Democratic Republic of the Congo as this confirms a 3rd case

The World Health Organization confirmed a third case of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Friday as health officials attempt to vaccinate residents and contain the possible outbreak.

Earlier this week, the global health agency confirmed that a woman has died of the disease in Butembo, a city in North Kivu province and the epicenter of a previous Ebola outbreak that was declared over in June. WHO has since confirmed two more cases, including one more person who has died, said Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO health emergencies program, on Friday.

The number of people who may have been exposed to the virus rose from over 70 on Monday to 182 on Friday, Ryan said. He added that all but three of these people had been contacted and more than half of them had previously been vaccinated against Ebola in previous outbreaks.

“We’re seeing some benefits from previous vaccination, but of course we need to look at how long the vaccine protects,” he said.

He added that new vaccine shipments had arrived in Butembo this week. Ultra-cold chain storage equipment will be set up and staff trained in Butembo, Ryan said.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo also has other therapeutics, including anti-body monoclonal Ebola treatments, in its capital, Kinshasa, and another city, Mbandaka, Ryan said, adding that they will be flown to North Kivu over the weekend. Democratic Republic of the Congo has enough vaccine for 16,000 people in the country, Ryan said, but it’s not clear how much has gotten to Butembo.

WHO is “still unclear about the original community source” of the first Ebola case, Ryan said, adding that the National Institute for Biomedical Research of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is sequencing samples of the virus at its main laboratory in Kinshasa to see if the new cases are associated with the most recent butembo outbreak. Ryan said the results are expected over the weekend.

The Ebola outbreak, declared in June, lasted almost two years. It was the second largest in the world and at the time of its end there were a total of 3,481 cases and 2,299 deaths, according to the WHO.

WHO noted that efforts to respond to outbreaks in North Kivu province have been particularly difficult due to the ongoing violent conflict in the area, which is occupied by over 100 different armed groups, according to Human Rights Watch.

Ryan said WHO is working with non-governmental organizations, the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other United Nations agencies such as UNICEF to respond to the new Ebola cases.

In contrast to the highly infectious coronavirus, which can be transmitted by people without symptoms, it is believed that Ebola spreads mainly through people who are already visibly ill. The virus spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of people who are sick or have died of the disease, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ebola has an average death rate of 50% which, according to the WHO, can vary depending on the outbreak.

“Of course, two cases and now a third don’t seem like many, many cases given the global situation at Covid, but we’ve been waiting for Ebola to return in Eastern Congo and we will.” do everything in our power to assist the government in responding, “said Ryan.

But Demme, who couldn’t even get her to read, felt that she belonged in this pit.

“They trusted the director so much these days that there wasn’t a full committee to approve me,” Smith told Vulture. “He met with me, talked to me and told me what it would be. I remember him asking me, ‘Why do you want to do this?’ That’s a very good question. I remember thinking I couldn’t. I just thought I don’t think I can. So he gave me the part. I had to put on 25 pounds, which really was I got also just ended my life in punk rock and entered my life as an actress. ‘

That’s what I did then. I said, “I’m going to say no ?!” They thought I was stereotypical and in including the fat girls category. [Though she was hardly fat, Buffalo Bill’s victims were supposed to be “roomy,” using Lecter’s word, so that he could loosen their skin by starving them.] They said it was very difficult to get out. Which is not entirely wrong. But there is no way I would. “

The most obvious thing I had to do. And that made me investigate, “Okay, wait a minute, why don’t I want to live?” I’m making it sound a little bit more than it was, but all I remember is saying, “Oh, okay, so what’s going on?” And it led me into years of therapy. “

Do you really want ankle weights?

Ankle weights have tunneled through a wormhole from the 1980s to the present day and have appeared on tons of TikToks and Instagram posts. Do they really help tone your legs? Are they even worth buying? Here’s what you need to know.

Illustration for article titled Do You Really Need Ankle Weights?

Where they are useful

The best use of ankle weights is to add some resistance to exercises that involve moving your legs against gravity.

For example, side leg raises will do a lot more work on your muscles, even with a pound or two of weight on the ankle you’re lifting in midair. Donkey kicks and hollow body handles would also fall into this category.

G / O Media can receive a commission

In these examples, the ankle weights don’t necessarily make your ankles or legs work harder. You only add resistance, which is still an exercise for your hips, buttocks, or abs.

This use of ankle weights makes sense as it provides a way to provide resistance over time. To move forward, you’ll need to use heavier weights when your current ones get too easy. You may reach a point where an ankle weight exercise is no longer a challenge and you need to work the same muscles differently.

Where they are not useful

If you run, jump, or walk, ankle weights can make movement a little difficult, but they’re probably not a good addition. Think about why you are doing these exercises in the first place. If your goal is to burn calories while running or walking, you can do it more efficiently by running faster or farther without the need for ankle weights.

Some coaches even warn that wearing ankle weights while running or walking can cause muscle disorders or injury. although it is not clear whether this is really the case or not. (I couldn’t find solid evidence of an injury, but historian Conor Heffernan pointed this out to me a paper from 1988 The finding that the ankle weights didn’t add any significant extra calories and weren’t worth the potential risk.)

Illustration for article titled Do You Really Need Ankle Weights?

How much does a little weight help you?

Every time you look at a small weight – be it a pair of ankle weights or a tiny dumbbell or anything else – you think of a progressive overload.

Progressive overload is one of the basic principles of strength training. To keep getting results, you need to use heavier and heavier weights. That way, someone who starts deadlifting with just the bar can become strong enough to lift hundreds of pounds. Small weights can help you start this journey, but they won’t be able to stand it.

Ankle weights are often only a pound or two each, although I have a set that can load up to about ten pounds if you tuck all of the small sandbag inserts into just one cuff of the pair. It came in handy when I was rehabilitating an injury; My physiotherapist recommended doing the side leg raises, and I needed most of the weights in the set at the time of my rehab.

Fitness products are often only available because they are easy to sell

While looking through ads and Instagram posts for this article, it became clear why ankle weights are suddenly popular. You can promote her by sitting her on a model with great legs in some fancy leggings and having her exercise on the beach or in front of a colorful wall. They just look cool, especially some of the newer styles that look like blocky bangles.

Since they are quite light, they are cheaper to manufacture and ship than a kettlebell, for example. While they have a place in your exercise routine, it would be a mistake to believe that you are buying a versatile or durable piece of equipment by indulging in a pair of ankle weights.
