There is something very calming about visiting a botanical garden. Perhaps it is surrounded by foliage or it takes up the variety of colors. Or maybe it’s just nice to be able to enjoy well-kept and manicured nature where others have done the gardening and landscaping work. Whatever the reason, if you’re into botanical garden aesthetics, you are not alone.

And if so, why not bring some of these elements and design strategies into your own home and garden? No, most people won’t be able to build a Victorian style glass greenhouse, but there are some more realistic features you can incorporate into your own space. Here are a few to watch out for, courtesy of an article by Megan Slack for home & garden.

Include more mirrors, both indoors and outdoors

You are probably familiar with the classic design strategy of adding a large mirror to a room to make it appear larger than it actually is. Well, some botanical gardens, like the one in New York City, put up mirrors outside for a similar reason: to multiply the beauty of the flowers and plants, Slack explains.

You can achieve the same effect by placing a mirror behind (or under) some of your indoor plants or in different parts of your outdoor garden.

Work with what’s in season

The magic of the Botanical Garden lies in the fact that you can visit the same place several times a year and it can look completely different depending on the season. Everyone loves the spring blooms and autumn leaves, but there is also something for the summer shade and winter silence. You can bring this into your home and garden by focusing on plants and flowers that are in season.

Consider adding a water feature

Nothing screams “Botanical Garden” like a splashing water feature surrounded by leaves. You can create this in your home garden with relative ease. And no, you don’t need an expensive fountain with artificial stones: Even a large bowl filled with water can be a bird bath (just change the water regularly) and thus a (basic) water feature.
