Just like the third season – when her kidnapping attempt was not recognized – was Princess Anne (Erin Doherty).
Although the issues in her marriage to Captain Mark Phillips were briefly addressed, one of Anne’s biggest scandals was completely overlooked.
Anne – the first woman in the family to give birth in a hospital rather than at home – broke with tradition and decided not to give birth to a son Peter and daughter Zara royal titles who thought they’d have a better shot at normalcy if they were just Peter and Zara, no prince or princess, no HRH (or HRR, like their mother).
“I think it was probably easier for them, and I think most people would argue that titles have disadvantages,” said Anne Vanity Fair, briefly explaining the choice. “So I think that was probably the right thing to do.”
Another Anne scandal occurred in 1989 when letters in love that the Queen’s daughter exchanged with the Royal Navy Command Office, Timothy Laurence, were stolen and leaked to the press, prompting the palace to make an unprecedented statement.
“We have nothing to say about the contents of personal letters that a friend sent to Your Royal Highness that have been stolen and that are the subject of a police investigation.”
Anne and Mark would announce their split shortly after the scandal and divorce in 1992.
