You’ve been able to add some quirky effects to your Clips videos in iOS for a long time, but iOS 14.5 brings new augmented reality effects to the app that let you fill your room with Party City-style lasers, virtual confetti, and more More. You’ll need an iPhone 12 Pro or iPad Pro with LIDAR (March 2020 or later) to attend, but it’s super easy to get your dance party going when you’re ready for the job.
First, make sure that the Clips App is installed on your device. (I’m not very hip, so I removed it from my iPhone a while ago.) Second, make sure you’re using iOS 14.5. If not, or if you’re not sure, pull yours the settings App and visit General> Software update to start the upgrade.
Once you’ve updated to iOS 14.5 and started clips, tap the colorful star icon in the lower right corner to start the augmented reality scan. That sounds a lot wilder than it actually is. You simply move your phone around the room to capture everything it can see, including the floors, walls, and objects that might otherwise hinder your dance moves. You will be asked to check when you feel you have scanned enough. You can always check this by moving your phone and watching how this affects the holodeck-like pattern you are viewing.

Unlike my example above, make sure you’ve scanned the blank space before you, your friends, or your pets come across it. Otherwise, their bodies will be viewed as an object that the augmented reality system must bypass. If they go away, you’ll have a topic-sized blob in your video that doesn’t look very good. (What can I say; the cat ate and did not move.)
Taking a shot is as easy as holding down the red record button when you’re happy with your AR effects. However, someone has to keep holding the button, which means your selfie camera will get stuck if you’re the only one capturing a creative video. However, feel free to make any mistakes you want; You can easily trim and share your video afterwards. You can also add additional camera-style effects – just no augmented reality effects.
