In her memoir Hear Me Out, published last March, Sarah revealed that due to the coronavirus pandemic, she had delayed seeing the doctor when her symptoms – chest pain – first started. According to an excerpt published by The Times, she wrote that she developed sepsis during her treatment, was placed in an artificial coma for almost two weeks, and later underwent a mastectomy. Later, an MRI showed that her cancer had spread. Sarah said that her doctor told her in December 2020 that the upcoming Christmas would likely be her last.
The singer said she initially did not want to comment on her diagnosis, also hoped to be able to help others. “So much had been reported on the news that people did not miss any checkups during the Covid lockdown,” she wrote in her memoir. “People who have been diagnosed with cancer by the time it’s too late. If I spoke up as a public figure, a celebrity, it might help get the message across of the importance of investigating leave if you have any concerns. “
