With YouTube, YouTube creators can finally change the name and profile picture of their channel without the changes affecting the linked Google accounts. Before this change, the branding of a YouTube channel was tied to the user’s Google account information. So you’d have to change your Google Account name and profile picture if you wanted to update your channel.
Once changed, your Google account and YouTube channel can be separate entities. You no longer need to show up as “SuperProGamingDudesVideos” in Gmail or use your full name as the name of your YouTube channel if you don’t want to.
This is helpful for keeping your personal and YouTube identities separate. However, there are a few limitations that incumbent developers must be aware of:
- Changing the name of a verified channel removes the verification status. You can request the review again, but you will need to complete the same process as before to get the badge back.
- Changing the channel name does not change your channel’s custom URL.
- Music artists will keep the music note icons in addition to their channel’s branding even after editing the name of the channel.
The new editing options for YouTube channels work both on the desktop and in the YouTube mobile app.
To edit the branding of your YouTube channel on the desktop:
- to open YouTube Studio in your browser.
- click “Adaptation” from the sidebar menu.
- Go to “Branding” Click the tab, and then click “Change” next to your profile picture to upload a new one.
- Go to “Basic information” Click the pencil icon next to your channel name to edit it.
- click “Publish” to save your changes and update your channel’s information.
How to edit the branding of your YouTube channel on Android / iOS:
- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture in the top right corner.
- Tap “Your channel.”
- Tap “Edit channel.”
- Edit your channel’s name and / or profile pictures.
- Save your changes.
If you want to change your Google Account information but not your YouTube channel information, log in to myaccount.google.com and edit your name or profile icon in the “Personal Information” tab.

Note: If YouTube continues to state that changing your channel’s name or profile picture will apply to all Google services, it just means that the changes have not yet been made on your account. Google’s rollouts can be annoyingly uneven, but please try again. Finally, you too can change your channel information without affecting your Google account.
