Vaccines aren’t the one issue driving Covid instances down

0

More Americans are being vaccinated against Covid every day, but that’s not the only reason coronavirus cases continue to decline in the US, said Dr. Scott Gottlieb told CNBC on Friday.

In an interview on Closing Bell, the former Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration said that additional factors contributing to a drop in infection rates are the warming weather and the fact that part of the unvaccinated population has already been infected with Covid .

Gottlieb’s comments came Friday when the country’s seven-day average of new daily coronavirus infections fell below 30,000 for the first time in nearly a year. At the end of March there were around 66,000.

The decline in cases coincided with an increase in the availability of vaccines. As of Friday, nearly 50% of the U.S. population had received at least one dose of Covid vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At the end of March that number was a little less than 30%.

However, the percentage of Americans who have some immunity to coronavirus is higher than vaccination rates, Gottlieb said, estimating that at least a third of the population is infected. The US had around 33 million confirmed Covid cases in total, but Gottlieb has repeatedly said the official record is an undercount.

“We don’t have any data on this, but I suspect that the level of infection is likely higher in the unvaccinated population because many people are likely not getting the vaccine because they knew they were previously infected,” said Gottlieb.

People who have recovered from Covid have natural antibodies, but the CDC and other experts recommend that they get the vaccine too. In fact, people who have had the disease and received the Covid shot may develop stronger protection against variants of the virus.

People who have not yet been vaccinated may have been less concerned about the virus during the pandemic and therefore spent less time at home, Gottlieb added.

So if you assume that the percentage of previous infections in the unvaccinated population is more than one third, and it probably is, and you assume that we have currently given at least one dose to about half the population “We’re getting closer to a pretty high level of immunity,” said Gottlieb, who headed the FDA in the Trump administration from 2017 to 2019. Today he is a board member of the vaccine manufacturer Pfizer.

And while states are lifting many pandemic-time restrictions such as: B. Restaurant capacity constraints, some people have not reverted to their pre-Covid behavior, which helps reduce cases.

“People are generally more cautious, although we are starting to take off masks and be on the move,” said Gottlieb. “People are more careful about their interactions, so some of it still has a downward impact on transmission.”

Gottlieb predicted the country’s case numbers will continue to decline in the coming weeks, while the pandemic is unlikely to be classified as “ended”. He added, “I think we will have a very calm summer in terms of the coronavirus spread and then have to deal with it again when we start into winter.”

Disclosure: Scott Gottlieb is a CNBC employee and a member of the boards of directors of Pfizer, genetic testing startup Tempus, healthcare technology company Aetion, and Illumina biotech. He is also co-chair of the Healthy Sail Panel for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and Royal Caribbean.

These standard Android apps put person information in danger

0

According to a Check Point Research reportMany popular Android apps put your personal data at risk due to poorly secured third-party services.

The report highlights various security vulnerabilities affecting 23 different apps available on Google Play, each with 50,000 to 10 million downloads. Most of the affected apps collect and store user information, developer data, and internal company resources using unsecured real-time databases and cloud storage services. The security researchers were able to find the unsecured cloud databases from 13 apps, so that external actors can also access them.

Other apps have misconfigured push notification managers that allow hackers to intercept and modify seemingly legitimate notifications from developers to include malware, phishing links, or misleading content.

These vulnerabilities put at least 100 million Android users at risk with fraud, identity theft, and malware attacks.

Which Android apps are putting your data at risk?

Check Point Research said it found one or more of these bugs in 23 apps, 13 of which had real-time open databases. However, the report only calls five of these apps by name:

  • Astro Guru: A horoscope app with over 10 million downloads. It stores every user’s full name, date of birth, gender, GPS location, email address, and payment information.
  • iFax: A mobile fax app that stores all documents sent by more than 500,000 users in an accessible cloud database – with the cloud storage keys embedded in the app.
  • Logo Maker: A graphic design app with over 170,000 users. Check Point has determined that all full names, account IDs, emails, and passwords of all users are accessible.
  • Screen recorder: This app has more than 10 million downloads. The report found that account passwords are stored in the same cloud service that stores the recordings made by the app, making them vulnerable.
  • T’Leva: This taxi app from Angola with more than 50,000 downloads makes the text history between drivers and drivers, location data, full names and phone numbers accessible.

Check Point notified the app creators, but only Astro Guru responded and all apps are still available on Google Play.

What should Android users do to keep their data safe?

The first step is to stop using the apps mentioned in Check Point Research’s report. However, since only five are named, it means that at least 18 others are storing your data without the proper security precautions.

And that’s exactly what we know from the Check Point report – there are likely far more apps, websites, and services with misconfigured databases that we won’t find out about until after a leak.

While the Check Point Research report and similar reports may alert developers to unsafe data storage practices, it is ultimately up to the developers to correct the problem. However, no matter which apps they are using, users can take preventative measures to protect their personal information and other important data:

  1. To use Two-factor authentication (2FA) whenever possible.
  2. Withhold personal information from your accounts (for example, don’t add your home address if a service doesn’t need it) or use fake information whenever possible.
  3. Create unique passwords for each account and Use an encrypted password manager.
  4. Don’t link third party accounts like Google, Facebook, and Twitter if you can avoid it.
  5. To keep App permissions to the bare minimum.
  6. To use Services that notify you of breaches and compromised accounts.

These extra steps won’t stop a breach, but they can reduce your risk of identity theft, fraud, and other scams. We also have guides on prevention and Responding to data breaches, Ransomware Attacks, Malware, and Identity theftand how to recognize common Phishing Tactics and Other Scams Online.

Meghan and Harry live “over the fence” of Lowe’s first house in the area, and while the couple “hold back,” Lowe has crossed paths with the A-listers. “I saw Harry drive once,” Lowe recalled.

Of course, the royals aren’t the only high-profile residents of the beach town. “When Oprah drafted, that started the kind of revival of Montecito, “Lowe admitted.” Now that the royals are here: the good news is that property values are rising, the bad news is that the line at Starbucks is longer. “

Bitcoin value falls after China referred to as for crackdown on crypto mining

Bitcoin’s price fell on Friday following increased calls from Chinese authorities to crack down on the mining and trading of cryptocurrency.

China’s Deputy Prime Minister Liu He and the State Council said in a statement that stricter regulations are needed to protect the financial system.

The statement released late Friday in China said it was necessary “to combat bitcoin mining and trading behavior and resolutely prevent the transfer of individual risks to the social sphere.”

Bitcoin’s price for Coin Metrics dropped more than 6% when the news of the declaration was circulated. This was part of a wider slump in which the digital currency fell more than 40% from its peak.

China’s tough talk comes just a day after US officials promised to toughen those who use Bitcoin to “conduct broadly illegal activities including tax evasion.” Finance said it would require reporting of crypto transfers in excess of $ 10,000, just like cash.

The concerns in China have centered on a number of issues.

“It is necessary to maintain the proper functioning of the stock, debt and currency markets, rigorously combat illegal securities activities and severely punish illegal financial activities,” the statement said.

As part of its efforts to streamline the burgeoning space for digital currencies, the Chinese central bank was one of the first in the world to develop its own digital currency supported by the yuan. The US Federal Reserve announced Thursday that it will shortly release a paper setting out its own research into the central bank’s digital currencies space.

Internet cultureInternet cultureIt’s hard to keep up with internet culture, but don’t worry: every week we tell you the best of what you need to know.

Last week’s 0ut-of-Touch guide touched the stark darkness on the internet so we’re keeping it light this week like a flyweight boxer trying to hit his weight class. Nothing is more serious than eating pasta, pestering squirrels, zombies taking over Las Vegas, and the oldest “teenager” since Dick Clark went to the bandstand in the sky.

This week on the wrong vacation: May 24th is Rigatoni Pasta Day

According to my Ace youth reporter (my niece Claire), April 24th is Eat Rigatoni Pasta Day, an annual celebration where everyone is encouraged to consume rigatoni pasta. The meme thing comes from the TikTok account of @ jimmyrules32who has been reporting on the day without interruption since January 2020. His TikTok is pure dedication.

“Who cares?” I hear you ask Well, children take care. She cares enough # eatabowlofrigatonipastaonmay242021 has over 41 million views from TikTok. So if you want to be a cool uncle / aunt / mom / dad / sensei serve a steaming plate of rigatoni on May 24th, and if you want to be really cool, top your rigatoni with it Marcella Hazan’s Bolognese sauce. Trust me.

This week with old-fashioned teenagers: Dear Evan Hansen

Have you seen the trailer for the upcoming teen movie? Dear Evan Hansen? It’s the funniest thing I’ve seen in years, and not just because I think teenage suicide musicals are funny. The film looks like a full-length version of Steve Buscemi “How are you, fellow children?Meme: Actor Ben Platt plays a 17 year old high school student, but the guy looks at least 35. And not “young 35” either. More like “just divorced and starting a recovery program”. He is clearly older than his own mother.

Flat, salty, responded to the exhilaration of the internet with a (now deleted) tweet reading, “If the Randos are idiots about the ages, read this great article and / or watch fat. “

I’m obviously not going to read this shit, but Platt is right about Grease. Old people playing high school kids are nothing new, but that doesn’t make it any less ridiculous. In Music This Week: Demi Lovato introduces her new pronouns

In a video posted on Twitter, pop star Demi Lovato made cultural waves by appearing as the non-binary gender. “I had the revelation that I identify as non-binary,” they said in the video, “I’m going to officially change my pronouns to” she / she “.”

According to Lovato, the new pronouns best represent the fluidity they feel in their gender expression. “I do this for those out there who haven’t been able to share who they really are with loved ones. Please continue to live in your truths and know that I send you so much love, “Lovato tweeted.

If you’re old and out of touch like me, you’re probably like, “Huh? Whazzis now? “About people changing their pronouns, but after thinking about it for 43 seconds, I’ve come to the conclusion that everyone should just call people what they want to be called and, in general, go about their own business.

Streaming this week: Army of the Dead

It’s been too long since a good zombie movie has come out and too long since a good heist movie has come out. Fortunately, the drought ends for this Friday with the release of Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead.

This mash-up from the genre Zombies-Kill-Everybody and the genre Thieves-Steal-Everything is set in a post-apocalypse in Las Vegas and contains a zombie tiger, zombie show girls, zombie Elvis impersonators and a group of malicious mercenaries in the Quarantine zone to steal hundreds of millions of dollars. So it’s pretty much the best summer opening movie ever, and I don’t even have to see it to tell you this.

To judge by the trailerSnyder, whose previous credits include Justice League, 300, Man of Steel and this great reboot of Dawn of the Dead, is the right person to balance the humor, horror and action that an epic like this demands .

Viral Video of the Week: Backyard Squirrel Maze 2.0 – The Walnut Heist

YouTuber Mark Rober has a squirrel problem. The little rodents won’t stop invading the bird feeders in his back yard to steal the cute, sweet birdseed inside. Instead of poisoning them or moving, Rober built an elaborate obstacle course that looked at robbery movies and forced the squirrels to find out. I’m talking about a full maze of air ducts, randomly moving rocky outcrops, a little helicopter flight and much more. When the little boys get to the end, the reward is sweet: more walnuts than they could eat in their life!

This video stands out for both the elaborate and meticulous design of the obstacles and the amiability of the squirrels – in the end you are really invested in them to find out.

For the first time in almost a year, the US is reporting an average of less than 30,000 new Covid cases per day.

The seven-day average of new infections is 29,100 on Thursday, according to Johns Hopkins University. This is the first time since June 22, 2020 that the average has fallen below 30,000.

Federal data shows the country reported an average of 1.8 million daily vaccinations over the past week, with 48% of the population receiving one shot or more.

US Covid cases

After around 30,100 reported cases on Thursday, the nationwide average of new infections every day is 29,100. The country had reported fewer than 30,000 cases for five consecutive days as of Wednesday, another milestone not seen since last summer.

The pace of daily infections is down 18% from a week, and a CNBC analysis of the Hopkins data shows daily case numbers in 40 states and the District of Columbia decreased by 5% or more over the past week.

US Covid deaths

The U.S. has an average of 552 Covid deaths per day, according to Hopkins data, the lowest since July.

More than 588,000 deaths from Covid have been reported in the United States since the pandemic began.

US vaccine shots administered

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows the U.S. reported an average of 1.8 million shots a day over the past week.

The daily average has decreased by 12% compared to the previous week, but has increased slightly in the last few days. The CDC last week approved expanded use of Pfizer and BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine for 12-15 year olds, which could help increase vaccination numbers.

US percentage of the vaccinated population

Approximately 48% of the US population has had one or more vaccine, and 38% of the population is fully vaccinated.

Of those over 18 years of age, 60.5% are at least partially vaccinated.

Phoebe Dynevor speaks to Regé-Jean Web page at Bridgerton Exit

Even so, she will always have fond memories of working with Page. “I remember shooting the last scene in episode 1 where Regé and I had our first dance together,” Dynevor recalled. “And I remember thinking, ‘Wow, that feels special.’ There was fireworks behind us and it was really romantic music. It felt like a very special moment, but you never know if it will come out on camera and the audience will feel that buzz. Also. It’s hard to say. “

The audience certainly did. The show became Netflix’s biggest series of all time. In fact, it’s been renewed back in season four and a spin-off is in the works. And as Page Variety told us in April, he always knew that his character’s plot would be a “one season arc” and “then the Bridgerton family rolls on”.

“I have nothing but excitement for Bridgerton, who continues to take the steam train and conquer the globe,” he said at the time. “But it’s also valuable to complete those arcs and capture the landing.”

There remains a lingering undertone of skepticism when the cryptocurrency issue is brought up, and for good reason. Bitcoin – the de facto standard for cryptocurrencies – has a laundry list with reasonable criticisms.

  • Largely speculative market
  • Slow and expensive compared to traditional payment services and other cryptocurrencies
  • There has never been a better solution to money laundering
  • Not regulated
  • Lack of protection if your hard drive is lost or damaged
  • High market volatility

Despite these known flaws, Bitcoin defies critics and remains relevant and more resilient than expected by experts.
