Amazon wins sufficient votes to beat union efforts in Alabama

Amazon won enough votes Friday to defeat the union movement at one of its Alabama warehouses, dealt a blow to organized workers hoping to unionise a U.S. Amazon facility for the first time.

Of the 3,215 ballots cast, 1,798 were against the union and 738 were in favor. Approximately 5,800 Bessemer camp employees were able to vote on whether to join the retail, wholesale and department store union.

To defeat the union, Amazon had to get 1,608 votes, or just over 50% of the votes cast. The profit margin is greater than the 500 or so challenged ballot papers, which would only have been counted if they had influenced the election result. The election result has yet to be officially confirmed by the Nationa Labor Relations Board.

RWDSU said it plans to question the election results. The union said it intends to raise objections to Amazon’s voting behavior with the NLRB, as well as a number of unfair labor practices charges. “Amazon has violated the rights of its employees in Bessemer, Alabama, in a free and fair election.”

The union effort in Alabama turned into a protracted labor dispute at Amazon, where the company hired the same law firm it helped negotiate with a failed union action in Delaware in 2014. Amazon also made its position on the union campaign clear to workers at the Bessemer facility by holding mandatory meetings, setting up a website encouraging workers to “act free of charge” and distributing leaflets instructing workers to vote “NO” in the historic elections.

The union specifically called out a mailbox installed outside the Bessemer plant, including allegations that it was placed there by the U.S. Postal Service on instructions from Amazon. The company said the mailbox should make it easier for workers to cast their vote, adding that only the postal service has access to the mailbox.

The RWDSU’s objections are likely to spark a protracted legal battle over whether Amazon engaged in anti-union behavior that prevented the possibility of a fair election. RWDSU said it was ready to provide evidence to the NLRB in support of complaints that Amazon had breached labor law.

In a statement, RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum said Amazon had “left no stone unturned in supplying its own employees with gas”.

“We will not allow the lies, deceit and illegal activities of Amazon to go unchallenged. That is why we are officially bringing charges against all outrageous and obviously illegal measures that Amazon took during the union vote,” said Appelbaum. “We call for a full investigation into Amazon’s behavior in corrupting this election.”

Amazon said in a statement that “the union will say that Amazon won this election because we intimidated employees, but that is not true.”

“Our employees have heard far more anti-Amazon messages from unions, policy makers and the media than from us,” the company said. “And Amazon didn’t win – our employees chose to vote against joining a union.”

Both RWDSU and Amazon held press conferences after the result, in which employees of the Bessemer camp BHM1 took part. At the press conference hosted by Amazon, BHM1 warehouse worker Will Stokes said he and others will be working with workers who voted for the union to address their grievances.

“We actually have a seat at the table now,” said Stokes. “We talk to the management and in the next 100 days we have things that we want to change. Something will come of that.”

The vote concludes months of intense campaigns from both Amazon and RWDSU. In November, workers at the Bessemer plant announced that they would hold a union election. RWDSU organizers were stationed in front of the Bessemer plant every day in the hope of catching Amazon employees on their way home.

In the months that followed, support for the campaign increased. The union received critical endorsement from President Joe Biden who, without naming Amazon, discouraged any interference by the employer in the election.

The White House declined to comment on the election result until the NLRB confirms the results.

Amazon has long been a target for large unions. The Teamsters, the United Food & Commercial Workers Union and the RWDSU quietly meet with warehouse and delivery workers. The coronavirus pandemic, the explosion of protests against Black Lives Matter last summer, and mounting concerns about workplace safety have sparked interest in the organization of Amazon warehouses.

In a statement, Randy Korgan, Amazon’s director for Teamsters, praised RWDSU’s efforts to organize Amazon employees in Alabama.

“Although workers in Bessemer are facing off against one of the richest men in the world in a country with weak labor laws, they have drawn national attention to problems faced by many non-union workers in the industry,” Korgan said. “This fight is not over yet.”

Youth hockey has had more positive coronavirus cases across the country than most sports.

There are increasing reports of Covid-19 cases related to youth sports in the US, said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday.

The connection between youth sports and increased coronavirus cases is that the highly infectious B.1.1.7 variant identified for the first time in Great Britain has become the most common Covid strain in the USA

There are growing numbers of Covid cases related to B.1.1.7 variants in Michigan and Minnesota, Walensky said. “Both states have concerns about transmission in youth sports, both club and school.”

“What is happening in Michigan and Minnesota is similar to what we are seeing across the country: increasing reports of cases related to youth sports,” Walensky said at a White House press conference on Covid-19 Friday.

There were 291 outbreaks in Michigan between January and March that came from youth sports teams that involved at least 1,091 people, health officials said at a separate news conference on Friday. Governor Gretchen Whitmer urged schools and clubs to pause personal exercises and games for two weeks to control the outbreak. She also urged schools to stop personal learning during this time.

In Minnesota, the B.1.1.7. The strain quickly spread across Carver County. At least 68 coronavirus cases have been linked to participants in school and club sports activities, including hockey, wrestling, basketball, alpine skiing and other sports, the state health department reported in March.

A Covid outbreak at a wrestling tournament in Florida in December resulted in at least 38 coronavirus cases, according to a CDC study.

Walensky emphasized that Covid-19 cases related to youth sports are not necessarily related to an increased risk of transmission in classrooms.

“As cases increase in the community, we expect the cases seen in schools to increase too. This is not necessarily indicative of school-based transmission,” Walensky said.

“We haven’t seen any evidence of significant transmission of Covid-19 within schools once schools have fully implemented the CDC’s harm control guidelines,” she said.

The CDC director also highlighted an increase in Covid-19 cases and emergency rooms in younger adults, most of whom have not yet been vaccinated.

The English language is full of words that sound similar and mean similar things, but keep their own special place if we are to use them precisely. Who and who. Affect and effect. Sympathy and empathy. Extreme and supreme. And that is particularly annoying lay, lay, lay and lay. Another one that tends to trip people is the oh so similar next versus next.

Before we go any further, we should be aware that the reason you might be confusing these is because they have been confused and used interchangeably for so long that the water is quite cloudy. How Merriam-Webster mention, that:

The problem of distinguishing between Furthermore and further is reinforced by the fact that any of these words can be an adverb, adjective, or verb and have multiple meanings in some of these parts of speech. In certain cases it is good to use one on top of the other, in other cases there is some leeway, and in other cases it doesn’t matter which one you use. Welcome in English.

But we don’t have to get lost in the weeds too much here. Both words are used to indicate greater degrees of something. In most cases, the difference in choosing the right one is simple: keep using when referring to physical distance and keep using when referring to pictorial distance.

You ran further today than you did yesterday. Your parents live further away from you than your sister does. The road is blocked so you cannot go any further. However, you want to advance your career. We further illustrate the point here. Do we need to discuss this further?

Nothing happens in the mizanine household Maryse Mizanin don’t know about. Even if Mike “The Miz” Mizanin thinks he pulls a quick on her, it just won’t happen. He secretly decorated a “MizCave” during the April 12th episode of their USA Network reality show Miz & Mrs. He assumed Maryse wouldn’t find out about it (until the episode aired) because he was hiding in a ” “Room with them was located at home. Still, she realized immediately.

The mother of two told Daily Pop’s Carissa Culiner“It’s my house. I’ll find out pretty quickly if you want to do something you shouldn’t be doing.” Maryse isn’t the only mizanine lady who found out about the MizCave. Her daughters Madison and Monroe have “completely” taken over the secret location, according to The Miz.

The girls also enjoyed their backyard sand pit which didn’t come together as seamlessly. Mike said, “They didn’t put it where it was supposed to be,” and as a result, a ton of sand had to be “shoveled” and wheelbarrowed. He added, “And guess who had to do all this?” He also taught Monroe how to swim and make the most of his time at home with his wife and daughters. “This is what warms my heart the most.”

Half of the S&P 500 studies more cash for international taxes than US taxes

Half of the S&P 500 studies more cash for international taxes than US taxes

Almost half of the major US companies that make up the S&P 500 stock index allocated more money to paying foreign taxes than they did to paying the US government in 2020 – much more money.

A total of 241 S&P 500 companies put a combined $ 73 billion in taxes to foreign governments and only $ 6.7 billion in U.S. taxes over the past year. This is based on a CBS MoneyWatch analysis of regulatory documents and data from the financial information company FactSet. That is a ratio of foreign to domestic taxes of more than 10 to 1.

Globalization explains some of this. Coca-Cola and Caterpillar pay more taxes overseas because they now make most of their money outside of the US. Still others on the list like Boeing, Hilton, and Pfizer saw this Coronavirus pandemic Erase your US profits – and most or even all of your domestic tax bills.

But a lot of those 241 companies, like FedEx, General Motors, and Nike, made a lot of money last year, and a lot of it was made in the US. However, the company’s files suggest that they are now paying much of their taxes elsewhere. Indeed, the relationship between where they make their profits and where they pay their taxes can seem particularly crooked these days:

  • Disney, the global entertainment giant and theme park operator, got nearly 80% of its sales – and all of its profits – from its US division in the company’s final fiscal year, which ended in early October. Still, 75% of the nearly $ 1 billion Disney spent on taxes was for overseas governments, according to the company.
  • Starbucks also makes most of its money in the US. The coffee chain has earmarked three times as much taxes for foreign governments as it did last year for US federal income tax. According to the latest financial record, Starbucks spent $ 181 million on tax payments to foreign governments, but only $ 49 million on U.S. federal income taxes.
  • Netflix, a bailout for many people during the pandemic, spent $ 369 million on taxes last year. Only 7% of that was US federal taxes. Three major domestic tax breaks allowed the company to spend just $ 24 million on US federal taxes on its $ 2.8 billion US pre-tax profits, up from an effective income tax rate of just 0.8% last year Year corresponds.

For decades, US companies have shrunk their tax burdens by moving business overseas, sometimes for legitimate business reasons. Increasingly, however, the US portion of a global corporation’s business is treated best for tax purposes.

One of the main reasons for this, experts told CBS MoneyWatch, is Donald Trump’s signing of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which, among other things, lowered the country’s corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%.

Trending news

Trending news More

Proponents of the cuts said the lower tax rates would encourage companies to bring more of their operations back to the US and, as a result, pay more US taxes overall. The opposite appears to have happened, according to the CBS MoneyWatch analysis.

In 2017, there were 150 companies in the S&P 500 that spent more on foreign taxes than in the US. That number has grown steadily since Trump’s tax law came into effect. It rose to 204 in 2018 and then to 220 in 2019. Last year the list included an additional 21 companies, bringing the current balance sheet to 241.

“After the tax cut and employment law went into effect, the US has become a kind of tax haven,” said Gabriel Zucman, an economist at the University of California at Berkeley and one of the world’s foremost experts on corporate tax avoidance. “Many US companies have very little federal taxes to pay.”

Biden defends the infrastructure bill

13:58

The fact that so many US companies appear to be paying so little domestically while paying more to foreign nations could fuel the growing national debate over whether US companies are still paying their fair share of government costs. A recent study found more than two dozen profitable companies I didn’t pay a dollar in federal income tax since the tax cut in 2017.

This week the Biden government unveiled a plan to increase it What companies pay in federal income taxes by more than $ 2 trillion over the next decade. A big part of the plan is to increase the official corporate income tax rate from 21% to 28%. However, President Biden also said he wanted to remove the incentives companies have to move overseas investments and avoid US taxes. And Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said This week she is working with other nations to try to establish a minimum global corporate income tax.

A corporate tax conundrum

It is impossible to know exactly how much a particular company pays in taxes. This is because businesses, like individuals, are allowed to keep their tax returns and payments private.

However, public corporations that report their profits to investors are also required to include a year-end note on their financial records showing how much they have set aside to pay taxes over the next 12 months. You must also indicate to whom these taxes are expected to be paid, e.g. B. to the federal government, the state or foreign governments.

CBS MoneyWatch examined this number – known as current tax expense – for every company in the S&P 500 over the past five years, comparing what those companies planned for US taxes with what they expected for foreign taxes. For many companies, the latter account was considerably larger.

“This is the best representative we have for finding out what companies pay in taxes each year,” said Robert Willens, one of Wall Street’s foremost tax and accounting experts and associate professor of accounting at Columbia University.

Of course, Willens added, “There could be years when businesses get some sort of settlement or tax refund that includes the current tax expense [noted in the filing] is not what they paid for. ”

A Disney spokesman said the pandemic hurt the company’s business over the past year, resulting in less profits and, as a result, less tax debt. “The amount of federal income taxes we paid [last year] is not like what we would have seen in a more normal year, “the spokesman said in a statement. Disney paid a total of $ 12.4 billion in federal income taxes over the past three years.

A Starbucks spokesman said the company’s financial filing, like those of other publicly traded companies, does not provide a fully accurate representation of what it actually paid in taxes last year. Starbucks paid over $ 1.7 billion in taxes worldwide last fiscal year, “the majority of which was for US federal income taxes,” the spokesman said.

Netflix as a case study: a 0.8% federal tax rate last year

The CBS MoneyWatch review of the S&P 500 filings shows how the corporate tax game is often won at home these days, aided by an accumulation of domestic tax breaks and increasingly generous credit.

Look at Netflix, which refused to comment on this story. The streaming service spent $ 369 million on taxes last year. 75% of that was for taxes outside of the United States. State or local taxes accounted for an additional 18% of Netflix’s tax expense. Only 7% of the total tax bill was reserved for federal income taxes.

Netflix is booming worldwide during the pandemic, but it still generates almost all of its income in the US – $ 2.8 billion, or nearly 88% of its pre-tax profit of $ 3.2 billion last year.

Based on those domestic earnings, Netflix could have owed around $ 590 million in federal income taxes given the current U.S. corporate rate of 21%. Netflix probably didn’t pay anything nearby. Instead, a host of tax breaks and tax credits that Washington passed in recent years or long blessed by US tax law enabled the company to pay far less.

The biggest disruption came from stock options, which receive preferential tax treatment. That saved Netflix nearly $ 340 million last year. Next, Netflix said it had spent $ 1.8 billion on technology and development, which in turn earned $ 110 million in tax credits. Then there was Trump’s corporate tax cut, which allowed Netflix to save an additional $ 90 million on its IRS bill.

Add those three breaks along with a few other little ones, and the result is that Netflix spent just $ 24 million on U.S. federal income taxes last year. This translates into an effective tax rate of only 0.8% on US pre-tax profits of $ 2.8 billion.

On the other side of the map, the tax trail on overseas Netflix profits goes north, not south.

Netflix made $ 400 million in profit on its overseas operations, which if taxed at a US tax rate of 21% would have generated a tax charge of $ 85 million for Netflix. Instead, Netflix said in its filing Overseas income tax rate is higher than the US – an average of 24%, which resulted in a $ 12 million increase in reported tax expense in 2020.

In addition, Netflix said a “global business simplification” last year resulted in a one-time foreign tax charge of $ 135 million.

Add those two tax charges along with a few other smaller ones, and Netflix’s overseas tax expense was $ 277 million last year, which translates to a high effective tax rate of 68% on overseas pre-tax profit of $ 400 million.

“For one thing, the European Union has done a better job regulating businesses and the rate of income tax they pay,” said Dean Baker, co-founder of the left-wing Center for Economic and Political Research. “The IRS, however, mostly looked the other way.”

Why is my WiFi community not exhibiting up on all of my units?

Why is my WiFi community not exhibiting up on all of my units?

Wireless networks are one of life’s great secrets. With your own setup, you probably have a lot of frustrating questions: Why are my downloads slow even when I have a good connection? Why does my connection drop so quickly when I move around my house? Why is my WiFi terrible after spending a lot of money on hardware? Such things.

For this week Tech 911 Q&A, Lifehacker reader George wants an answer to a common question – why is his WiFi causing him so much trouble? – with a funny twist:

“I’ve had a problem for a while now. At first, my WiFi network was only showing up on my wife’s Android tablets and Android phone. My mother-in-law’s WiFi from over a block away shows a stronger connection than our own. My devices, both Android and iPhone, were not only showing their WiFi as stronger right now, but also some others, even when they were next to my router and modem. Other users’ devices will not show any available WiFi other than my own when trying to connect. What’s happening?

If in doubt, reset to the factory settings

This is really bizarre, George. I don’t have a good explanation of why your devices, and only your devices, are showing a strong signal for a wireless network just a block away. It’s just not normal. The signal from a typical router doesn’t reach that far. You’re in luck if it fills your entire home with a strong signal.

G / O Media can receive a commission

Your devices are weird. Everyone else behaves correctly as there is no far away WiFi signal to look forward to. As for the other wireless networks, which are supposed to be more powerful than your own, that’s plausible. It’s strange how this happens when you’re right next to your own router. This may be causing some kind of radio interference.

Pull out a laptop – ideally one with at least wireless-n connectivity, so you’ve bought in the last decade – and start using it a dedicated app to check your WiFi signals. What do you see? When there’s a lot of WiFi interference, you’ll find that your wireless network (and everyone else’s) are all trying to use the same channels. If so, go into your router’s settings and either manually select a free channel (if it’s set to automatically select one), or set it to automatically select one if You have previously manually selected an occupied one.

If “Auto” is enabled, turn off the router, wait about 15 seconds, and then turn it on again. Ideally, no longer congested channels are used for your wireless networks. In this case you can make a manual correction.

If the app shows you that your router’s WiFi signals are actually pretty strong and only your phones are displaying them strangely, I wouldn’t be sweating. There may be a bug or a hardware problem with your devices. (Update to the latest version of Android or iOS just to be sure.)

Illustration for article titled Why is my WiFi network not showing up on all of my devices?

Next, reset your router to its factory default settings. This is usually done by pressing a button in Settings or by using a paper clip to physically press a tiny hardware button on your router. Why the nuclear approach? It’s easier to start over, especially if all you have to do is enter your SSID and password to start over.

Once you do, update the firmware – the software that makes the router work. If your router doesn’t have a built-in way to do this automatically, you will likely need to go to the manufacturer’s support site, enter the exact model number of your router, and download it yourself. Upload it to your router, reboot, and you’re good to go.

Next, check the duct situation again. If you need to make adjustments, let it rip. Otherwise, you can also try using separate SSIDs for your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks (if you use the same SSID for both).

What do you see now If your device only shows your 2.4 GHz network and not your 5 GHz network, it will help you locate the problem. There may be a hardware problem that the troubleshooting does not resolve. Are you trying to tighten your router antennas? At least for now, you can access one of your WiFi networks.

This doesn’t entirely explain why your devices wouldn’t display a wireless network if your wife did. I would bet there is something strange about the devices you are using, but I wouldn’t expect them all to have a similar problem. The only unifying trait is that you own it.

If you can’t connect to your WiFi network while updating your devices, but everyone else can connect to your WiFi network, you can assume that there is a problem with your devices. I don’t know exactly why they are all affected and what this problem is. Your devices may be very old and your router is using encryption they don’t support (WPA2 if your devices are only compatible with WPA). Or you’re using an older standard for your wireless networks that you shouldn’t be using (like WEP), and switching to something more modern (like WPA2) will solve it.

Your device should still be able to see the wireless network even if it can’t connect. Try entering your wireless network information manually if your phones allow it and see if it helps. (I suspect it doesn’t.) Make sure all versions have the latest updates and do a factory reset to make sure you’ve removed all software variables. If you still can’t see your WiFi network on your devices, it’s either time for a new router or new devices.

LONDON – Prince Philip, the Greek-born king who was the longest-serving consort of a British sovereign as the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, passed away on Friday. He was 99 years old.

“HRH passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle this morning,” announced the Royal Family. “Further announcements will be made in due course. The royal family and people around the world mourn his loss.”

Following a long-running plan known as Operation Forth Bridge, his death ushered in a period of national mourning.

Philip, whom the Queen described as “my strength and my stay,” was hospitalized in February after “feeling unwell” and being treated for an infection and pre-existing heart disease, Buckingham Palace said. He was released a month later after heart surgery.

Philip, who popularized the sobriquet “The Firm” for the family firm Windsor, finished his official duties in the fall of 2017. Months earlier, in June, he was hospitalized for an infection and missed the Queen’s speech re-elected Parliament opened this month.

Two days after the absence of Easter 2018 In St. George’s Chapel he was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital for a previously planned hip operation, the palace announced. This 10-day hospitalization came weeks before the birth of Prince William and Princess Kate’s third child, Prince Louis Arthur, and Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle on May 19, 2018 in St. George’s.

In January 2019, Philip was uninjured after being involved in a collision while driving a Land Rover near the Queen’s Sandringham Estate at the age of 97. According to witnesses, the vehicle overturned and two women were treated for injuries. Weeks later, he decided to surrender his driver’s license.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Philip and Elizabeth lived at Windsor Castle, west of London.

The Duke of Edinburgh supported his wife in an unprecedented time of social, economic, technological, political change and family crises.

Fourteen prime ministers held their office, while Philip was British consort – companion of the sovereign – under Winston Churchill in 1952 through the incumbent Boris Johnson.

Both the Duke and Queen, the world’s longest reigning monarch, saw the transformation of a once global British Empire into a Commonwealth of 52 independent member states, a free association under the Queen’s direction.

Philip’s public statements had been rare in recent years, and his direct contact with the media was even rarer. Previously, the Duke was known to express his opinion in public engagements, often with terrifying remarks that went beyond the boundaries of humor.

For example, during the 1981 recession, he said, “Everyone said we needed more free time. Now they are complaining that they are unemployed.”

“Aren’t most of you descended from pirates?” Philip asked a wealthy Cayman Islands resident in 1994.

“You are too fat to be an astronaut,” he said in 2001 to a 13-year-old boy.

When Philip met a mayor in 2012 who was using a mobility scooter, he asked him, “Did you run over someone?”

Early life

Philip was born on June 10, 1921 on the Greek island of Corfu as the youngest child and only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice von Battenberg. Andrew, whose father, King George I of Greece, was murdered in 1913, was the commander of the Greek army during the war with Turkey from 1919 to 1922. After the defeat of Greece, Andrew and the family were exiled in 1922 and settled in France.

Philip’s maternal grandfather, Prince Ludwig von Battenberg, renounced his German title, took the surname Mountbatten, an Anglicized version of the German Battenberg, and became a British citizen.

At the age of 7 in 1928, Philip was sent to school in England. He lived with his maternal grandmother, Victoria Mountbatten, and his uncle, George Mountbatten.

Philip’s four sisters married German aristocrats, and three of them – Sophie, Cecilie, and Margarita – joined the NSDAP. Of course, one of his brother-in-law was among those involved in the 1944 conspiracy to kill Adolf Hitler.

In an interview with historian Jonathan Petropoulos, published in his 2006 book Royals and the Reich, Philip noted that he was never “aware that someone in the family was actually expressing anti-Semitic views,” but admitted that there was “inhibitions against the Jews” and “jealousy of their success. “

As a teenager, Philip joined the Royal Navy and served in World War II, including participating in the battles of Cape Matapan and Crete and the invasion of Sicily. He was in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945 because of the Japanese surrender and later received the Greek War Cross of Valor for his service in the Navy.

Royal marriage

In 1947, 26-year-old Philip married his third cousin, Princess Elizabeth, 21, renouncing his Greek title in order to become a naturalized British subject. He was later made Duke of Edinburgh by Elizabeth’s father, King George VI.

The royal marriage was controversial at the time as Philip was not a native son. The Queen Mother is said to have called him “the Hun”. Even so, the couple married at Westminster Abbey and received more than 2,500 wedding favors from around the world. A year later, the son and heir to the throne, Charles, was born, followed by Anne, Andrew and Edward.

Philip’s maritime career, during which the newly married couple were briefly stationed in Malta, later ended when George VI died on February 6, 1952 and Princess Elizabeth became Queen.

The Duke assumed his new role as wife and accompanied Her Majesty on domestic trips, state visits and Commonwealth tours around the world.

Elizabeth was officially crowned Queen in the first live television coronation broadcast worldwide in 1953. Shortly thereafter, Philip and Elizabeth embarked on a seven-month international tour, visiting 13 countries and covering over 40,000 miles.

“Nobody has ever forgotten to meet him”

In addition to his royal obligations, the Duke became a qualified pilot and played polo regularly until his 50th birthday. Philip achieved many flight qualifications that earned him his Royal Air Force wings in 1953, his helicopter wings two years later, and his private pilot’s license in 1959.

In an official capacity, Philip has traveled to more than 140 countries.

“The great thing about my dad is that nobody ever forgot to meet him, so they all have their stories,” said Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, during an engagement at Windsor Castle in May 2017.

“Wherever he’s been, wherever in the world – people remember him. You can’t really get a better award,” he added.

The reign of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip also had to survive times of crisis, including the fact that the British monarch was fired with spaces in 1981. Two years earlier, the Queen’s art advisor, Anthony Blunt, was exposed as a communist spy and Philip’s uncle Louis “Dickie” Lord Mountbatten was killed by an Irish Republican Army bomb.

In 1992 the marriages of three of her children broke down. Andrew and Anne divorced their spouses, and Charles and Diana began a separation that ended in divorce four years later. Also in 1992, Windsor Castle, one of the couple’s official residences, was destroyed by fire. The Queen described this 12 month period as “annus horribilis”.

During Charles and Diana’s troubles, Philip reportedly advised the couple to reconcile, but to no avail. A year after their 1996 divorce, Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Fayed were killed in a car accident in Paris while photographers chased their limousine. Before the funeral, Philip successfully encouraged his 15-year-old grandson William to walk behind Diana’s coffin. Sixty years earlier, Philip, then 16, marched behind his sister Cecilie’s coffin after she was killed in a plane crash.

“If you don’t go, you will probably regret it later,” Philip told William, according to British media reports. “If I go, will you go with me?”

Fayed’s father claimed Philip ordered the couple’s execution, but in 2008 a London medical examiner dismissed Mohamed al Fayed’s allegations of conspiracy and ruled that there was no such evidence. The jury ultimately decided that the crash was due to grossly negligent driving of the couple’s chauffeur and paparazzi chasing their limousine.

“I … owe him a debt greater than he would ever say.”

In the decades following his marriage to the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh had made more than 22,000 individual engagements, made 637 overseas visits, made an estimated 5,493 speeches, and acted as a patron of nearly 800 organizations, according to the royal website.

One of his most successful associations has arguably been the creation of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, a youth self-improvement program that has been running for 65 years.

In May 2017, the palace announced that the then 95-year-old prince would finally cease his royal duties from autumn. Philip and his wife had gradually passed on some of their respective workloads over the past few years. Their son and heir, Prince Charles, as well as grandchildren, Princes William and Harry and other family members, assumed more collective responsibility until Andrew was effectively stripped of royal duties in 2019 for being linked to late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and Harry back as a senior Royal in 2020.

The Queen said in honor of her husband on their golden wedding anniversary on November 20, 1997: “Quite simply, he was my strength and stayed all these years and I and his whole family in this and many other countries owe him a debt that is greater is than he would ever ask, or we will ever know. “

The couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in November 2017. During their private ceremony at Windsor Castle, Elizabeth presented him with the Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order for “Services to the Sovereign”.

Survivors include his wife, Queen Elizabeth II, and their children: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex. The Queen and Philp also had eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, including Augustus Philip Hawke Brooksbank, who was born on February 9, 2021 to Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank and was named in part in honor of the Duke of Edinburgh.

Philip had insisted that, according to The Times of London, he didn’t want the “excitement” of a state funeral at Westminster Hall. Instead, his body is expected to be in St. James’s Palace, where Prince Diana’s body lay prior to her burial.

During the pandemic, people were Leaving large city apartments for rural residents in places where quarantine is a little easier. The exodus caused some landlords to fill vacancies. If you are in the Market for a new apartment– or even get ready to renew your existing lease – now is the time to play for a lower monthly payment, not to mention the added perks and conveniences that will make your daily life that much more enjoyable. Here are six things to negotiate every time you sign a new lease.

The monthly rent

Many people think their monthly rent is an immovable price, but your landlord sets it which means they can change it. Trying to negotiate a lower rent can be nerve-wracking. The risk of losing your home immediately is a great fear. However, in the current climate, you may have more traction than you think. As a housing attorney Samuel J. Himmelstein told the real estate site Brick Underground “[t]The vacancy rate will rise and landlords will be more interested in keeping their tenants in order to maintain their cash flow. “

Take a look at the vacancies in your building and find them comparable prices for similar apartments in your neighborhood. That way, you can determine how much you should be paying and weigh that against the amount you want to pay.

If the landlord is sticking to the monthly rate, try negotiating a free monthly rent.

Rental period

If you know you will stay and worry about rent increases at the end of a lease, ask for a longer term, which will lower your overall rental costs over the long term.

The average rental period is twelve months (one year) which is a fair rental period; After a year you will usually know whether you want to stay in the apartment or move on. If you’re extending a lease, or if you feel like you really love the new digs, you can apply for a longer lease – two years or even 18 months are common questions, whichever you think best suits your needs. Most landlords will welcome the idea of having a permanent tenant for a longer period of time in order to secure this monthly income and to reduce their turnover rate. Be sure to check the Broken lease fees Built into the contract because if something goes wrong during your rental period and you have to leave early, you want to be sure that you can get off at a fair price. (By the way, you can also negotiate the fraction fees in the negotiation process.)

Cosmetic changes

It is important to have a home with all of the joys that you enjoy. Before signing your lease, you should negotiate the ability to do so Small changes. Refinishing cabinets or changing doorknobs are little things that can really change the look of the room. Since you live at home and not with the landlord, you want the option to make it yours, even if it’s temporary.

Professional cleaning

It is your responsibility to clean your home. You won’t ask your landlord to wash your dishes, but you can ask Deep cleansing be included in your rental agreement. A professional cleaning company can wash things like clean baseboards, shampoo carpets, clean and dusty ceilings, and windows. With this type of service included in your monthly rental, spring cleaning becomes a breeze.

Park

If you have the opportunity to reserve your own parking space, I recommend that you grab one right away as part of your rental agreement. This will be more expensive in larger cities like NYC, where a dedicated spot runs on average $ 430 a monthbut it is definitely worth it if you can incorporate this question into your rental negotiation. If you have a car, you understand the problems and difficulties of parking on the street. A guaranteed spot saves you the extra costs associated with parking tickets and saves you the hassle of looking for a spot late at night or getting your car out for street cleaning.

Ask about the option of moving into a better unit

The outgrowth of space is pretty common when it comes to apartments. Perhaps you are expanding your family and need more bedrooms or a better layout. Or you just accumulated more stuff. When signing your lease, negotiate the option of moving to a larger or better unit in the building as soon as one becomes available. You will receive an initial notification when new apartments come on the market and can be expanded if necessary. Also ask a referral bonus. If you send other tenants on their way, request a cash bonus or money from the monthly rent. It is the least they can do to fill their empty units.

Misinformation on social media is hindering Papua New Guinea’s vaccination efforts.

According to the PNG’s Covid-19 Response Controller, many people are reluctant to vaccinate as false information about the vaccines is spread even as coronavirus cases increase.

The country reported 1,730 cases and 12 deaths between March 29 and April 4, according to a joint report from the World Health Organization and the PNG’s national ministry of health.

Cases of infection rose again in February, and PNG has reported 7,839 cases so far, data from Johns Hopkins University showed. However, there is consensus that the actual number is much higher, which is masked by low testing capacity and other logistical difficulties.

“We have been lulled into a kind of complacency and false sense of security that we have overcome over this first wave that we feared,” David Manning, PNG’s Covid-19 National Pandemic Response Controller, told CNBC’s Will Koulouris .

Papua New Guinea is located north of Australia and is a heavily forested island country with fewer than 9 million people.

This, of course, is attributed to the hesitation of the vaccine, and you can attribute this to a lack of awareness.

The National Capital District, home of PNG’s capital, Port Moresby, has the most reported cases, followed by the western province, which is also where the rate of infection is increasing.

A combination of events – funerals, holidays, and school resumption – resulted in “continuous transmission of the virus,” William Pomat, director of the PNG Institute of Medical Research, told CNBC last week.

Vaccine hesitate

So-called “vaccine nationalism” has made it difficult for small developing countries like PNG to resort to gunfire to vaccinate their populations. Many of them rely on an international vaccination initiative called Covax, but vaccine supply for that program is facing delays from India, which is also struggling to stem an increase in home cases.

PNG ran a vaccination campaign last week using around 8,000 cans of AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 shots donated from neighboring Australia. More cans are expected from China and India in the coming weeks.

The island nation has vaccinated fewer than 600 people so far, which, according to Manning, is way behind schedule.

“Of course, this is attributed to the hesitation of the vaccine, and it can be attributed to a lack of awareness – basically information about whether the vaccine has any side effects and the fake news spread on social media,” he said, adding that vaccine skeptics exert comparatively less pressure in urban areas.

Combating misinformation

Manning said Facebook reached out to PNG and asked how the social network could help dispel some of the misinformation that was spread, but he failed to explain the details of that conversation.

Facebook launched a public awareness campaign in PNG this week to help users identify and combat health misinformation. It runs for five weeks and contains graphics and videos in several languages.

“For this campaign, we will continue to focus our efforts on addressing misinformation related to Covid-19 and vaccines to ensure Papuan New Guineans are able to verify their visibility to official public health resources,” said Mia Garlick , Facebook’s director of public order in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands said in a statement on Wednesday.

“This campaign complements a call we launched in Papua New Guinea last week
Provide tips to local users on how to prevent Covid-19, “Garlick added.

Stressed health infrastructure

The outbreak puts undue strain on PNG’s already poor health infrastructure.

International organizations like Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) have warned of an impending collapse. According to experts, many frontline health workers who are already few are falling ill with Covid-19.

“If you get sick, no one will stand – not only for Covid, but also for other diseases and so on,” said Pomat of the Institute of Medical Research.

He stated that Covid tests are only done for those who “might show up” (at the) a health facility if they show symptoms and those who volunteer to go inside. “

Even then, hospitals and medical facilities will run out of components needed to perform these tests.

As PNG works with its development partners, including Australia, to ensure the supply of more test kits and components, it has also introduced stricter social restrictions. For example, stores have been asked to deny entry to those who do not wear masks, while travel between provinces is strictly regulated.

Manning said the pandemic response needs to be tailored to PNG’s coastal communities as well as the highland region, where even in the best of times it is difficult to provide health, police or government services.

“So we have now shifted our focus from a national response to a provincial response and are working closely together with the provincial health authorities that are currently inundated with surges, “he said.
