The Day – Mass. Finds details about using settlement funds for fuel explosions

0

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (AP) – Massachusetts is asking residents and businesses in three communities hit by a string of natural gas explosions and fires in September 2018 how to spend some of the money raised on a settlement with the utility responsible for the disaster.

Information from the online survey will help state officials develop and implement energy efficiency programs in Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover, The Eagle-Tribune reported Monday.

“We want the residents to drive this bus as often as possible. The decisions will be ingrained in community priorities, ”said Elizabeth Mahony, assistant attorney general in the energy division of Attorney General Maura Healey.

As a result of the explosions, attributed to pressurized gas pipes, one person died, nearly two dozen were injured and more than 130 properties were damaged.

Columbia Gas, the natural gas utility at the time of the disaster, has reached a $ 56 million agreement with the state. Some of the money was earmarked for debt relief for gas bills for low-income customers, while another part was used for clean energy and energy efficiency.

Open to Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover residents only, the survey is anonymous and available in English and Spanish.

What was lacking within the Bachelor: After the final rose

“The First Black Bachelor”

Next, Matt got his own interview time, admitting to Emmanuel that there was “a lot of pressure” and being the first black Bachelor to be under great control. He felt he was being asked not only to find love, but also to take on the weight of “everything that is going on in the country” in terms of social justice.

He said he wasn’t necessarily thinking about the pressures of the role, but more about how it got to the people.

“I think it’s exactly what we, as black men, have to do to familiarize people with your blackness and furthermore to show that you are not as threatening in terms of stature and personality as you are” he said said. “These are the things I’ve been thinking about.”

But in the end, he didn’t regret the experience.

“I was able to learn a lot about myself from meeting so many wonderful women who were there for love,” he said, and it was “liberating” to be comfortable telling someone that they loved them.

2 diagrams present how a lot the world is dependent upon Taiwan for semiconductors

Taiwan’s oversized role in chip manufacturing has come into the spotlight when a global semiconductor shortage forced several automakers to stop manufacturing.

Countries like the US and Germany have turned to Taiwan to help remove chip manufacturing bottlenecks. The shortage was due to increased demand for electronics during the Covid-19 pandemic. and was exacerbated by former President Donald Trump’s trade war with China.

Taiwan dominates the foundry market or semiconductor manufacturing outsourcing. According to Taipei-based research firm TrendForce, contract manufacturers combined accounted for more than 60% of total global foundry sales last year.

Much of Taiwan’s dominance can be traced back to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, or TSMC, the world’s largest foundry, whose customers include large tech companies like Apple, Qualcomm, and Nvidia. According to TrendForce data, TSMC accounted for 54% of total foundry sales worldwide last year.

Semiconductors are important components that drive electronics from computers and smartphones to brake sensors in cars. The manufacture of chips encompasses a complex network of companies that design or manufacture them, as well as companies that provide the technology, materials, and machinery for them.

TSMC is manufacturing-only and was the first to make many state-of-the-art semiconductors, said Dan Wang, technology analyst at research firm Gavekal, in a podcast from DBS Bank in Singapore.

“TSMC, if you just look at the market share, I believe that around 50% of all semiconductors in the world are made. And I think that still understands how important it is because these are some of the most advanced chips out there . “said Wang.

Semiconductor designers and manufacturers strive to make chips smaller and better. Currently, TSMC and its South Korean rival Samsung are the only foundries that can make the most advanced 5-nanometer chips.

TSMC is already preparing for the next-generation 3-nanometer chips, which are reported to start production in 2022.

China is catching up

Some countries are planning to increase their own semiconductor production – and one of them is China, which aims to be more independent.

However, China’s technological struggle with the previous US administration is holding back the largest chip maker, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), said Paul Triolo, head of geotechnology practice at Eurasia Group’s risk advisory group.

TSMC is just so dominant. It doesn’t really have a lot of competition in the upper range anymore.

Dan Wang |

Technology analyst Gavekal Dragonomics

Last year the Trump administration blacklisted SMIC known as the Entity List, which has limited limits the company’s access to the technology and machines it needs.

In 2020, SMIC was the fifth largest semiconductor foundry in the world by sales – after Taiwan’s TSMC and UMC, South Korea’s Samsung and GlobalFoundries in the US, TrendForce data showed.

“The current goal is to be up to date with companies like TSMC, Samsung and Intel,” Triolo told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia”.

“The problem that SMIC is in now, the dilemma, is that the US government put it on the entity list,” he said. “But the big picture is that, at least for now, SMIC has been cut off from purchasing the really cutting-edge equipment it needs from ASML, a Dutch company.”

ASML makes the so-called extreme ultraviolet lithography devices that are used to make the most advanced chips such as those made by TSMC and Samsung. Reuters reported last year that the Trump administration had pressured the Dutch government to stop selling the machine to SMIC.

Even if SMIC had access to ASML devices, it would take the company years to mass-produce high-end chips, Triolo said.

Until then, TSMC appears to maintain its leading position.

“TSMC is just so dominant. It doesn’t really have a lot of high-end competition anymore. So it has taken a while for this model to really work. But at this point it can actually be a very profitable company,” said Wang of Gavekal .

Fry your greens in leftover drops

Last Friday I roasted something delicious Chicken thighs. They were gone on Saturday afternoon. My friend and I picked the last two straight from their frying pan in the fridge and ate them barefoot in the kitchen with no plates or cutlery. A few hours later, I opened the fridge and found the pan we had left behind.

Illustration for article titled Fry Your Vegetables in a Dirty PanPhoto: Claire Lower

This was a dirty pan by anyone’s standards. It was the before-pan in a Cascade commercial: something that needed treating, scrubbing, and sanitizing. But when I looked at the pan I forgot in my rush to put cold chicken in my mouth, I saw nothing that needed cleaning. I saw potential.

When you fry a piece of meat, a certain amount is left behind. This stuff is usually made up of highly flavored fat, collagen, and some water, collectively known as “drops.” Drops taste very good, which is why some people use them to make sauces and gravies and others put a few vegetables under particularly dripping pieces of poultry. Wiping and washing the contents of this pan would have been a waste of fat and flavor, but separating the Schmaltz from the cold collagen and storing it for later would have been a pain in my bum.

Instead of doing any of these things, I heated the pan to set the drops in motion, then tossed them away with some asparagus, and toasted the little stalks until they were just about tenderly crispy. It made for very good, perfectly flavored and dressed asparagus. The chicken drips left behind acted as both cooking fat and sauce, coating each stem with a rich, meaty, toasted flavor.

The same maneuver can be performed with any vegetable. Potatoes are an obvious choice, but the asparagus surprised me at how good it was. So don’t underestimate the tall green guys. (I bet a quartered onion would be good too.)

To cook roasted vegetables in a dirty pan you will need:

  • A frying pan with quite a few remains of drops
  • Enough of one or more cooked vegetables to fill the skillet (see this guide for details how to prepare them.)

Take the pan out of the fridge and look for burning bits and pieces like herbs, meat or vegetables that have already been cooked. Set your oven to 425 ° C and place the dirty skillet in it to keep it warm as the oven preheats. After about five minutes, stir the drops to see if they have melted. After that, remove the pan from the oven and toss the prepared vegetables into the drops. Put the pan back in the heated oven and roast the vegetables until they are tender and crispy around the edges (see this post for approximate times). Eat your vegetables and repeat with another part of the plant until you run out of drops from the pan, or wipe them up with some bread. (Drops are especially tasty when spread over toast.) Then – and only then – should you wash your frying pan.

Eddie Van Halen’s son is “injured” Grammy’s tribute to the late rocker till 2021

Wolfgang made it clear that he “doesn’t want to start a hate parade here”, but considered it right to “explain my side”.

“I know that pop would probably just laugh at it and say, ‘Ehh, who’s an s – t? It was all about the music anyway. The rest didn’t matter,” the guitarist wrote, adding, “I would like to do Get the chance to speak with The Recording Academy about not only my father’s legacy, but the legacy of the rock genre as well. Thank you very much. “

After a long battle with throat cancer, Eddie Van Halen passed away on October 6, 2020.

The late star’s son confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media, sharing: “I can’t believe I have to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning. “

“He was the best father I could ever ask for,” continued Wolfgang. “Every moment I shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.”

Your job title is meaningless. Share them as a substitute

The newly minted richest man in the world, Elon Musk, has a new job title that matches his fortune. Although his empire spans several industries, he frees himself from the nickname CEO at just one of the companies under his thumb and opts for the title “Technoking” at the electric car manufacturer Tesla.

For Musk, the duties of a technoking appear no different from those of a traditional chief executive officer, as the industrial billionaire will see that the previous remit of his position remains intact Wall Street Journal. Tesla’s former CFO, Zach Kirkhorn, will also make a similar redundant leap, changing its official name to Tesla’s Master of Coin. (His actual job is not expected to change).

Musk and Kirkhorn gave themselves silly titles for being powerful men in charge, but aside from a few clickable headlines and giggles from Musk’s army of acolytes, the titles themselves mean nothing. And strangely enough, that goes for most job titles.

Technoking teaches the rest of us a little lesson, regardless of our calling: job titles rarely, if ever, explain your actual job. Since you’re not going to be putting a disrespectful, conversational title on a business card, it’s better if you’re talking to someone about your job or even interviewing someone to emphasize what you’re doing.

Titles do not mean the same thing in different organizations

Being a senior vice president of sales at a faceless company doesn’t mean your responsibilities exactly mirror what an SVP would do at another company.

What you do for a living is a pretty inevitable topic of conversation. If it’s something you actually want to talk about, you need to dig into the details, not just offer a three-word answer like “I am a lawyer”. Everyone has a vague sense of what it means to be a lawyer, but the actual details of a career always differ from person to person, even if they technically have the same job on paper.

Be more resourceful in your explanations

Of course, you don’t have to pretend to be a pseudo LinkedIn influencer speaking the corporate language, but feel free to explain what you’re doing with a little more color and panache. Because there is at least one purpose behind many boring job titles. Of course, we work to pay the bills and stay afloat, but on occasion it may be worthwhile to join in conversations that explain the broader purpose of your job.

As Gene Marks wrote Entrepreneur In 2018, job titles are basically meaningless and are generally used to strengthen one’s own ego:

What do you say when people ask you what you do for a living? Are you a “small business owner”? Entrepreneur? “A” CEO? “Don’t believe it. You’re none of those things. These are just titles that were invented to make people feel more important. That’s not what you really do.

Instead, think about what exactly you are doing. You don’t have to write a speech, but if you are an immigration attorney you should consider saying, “I help undocumented people seek legal remedies so they can reunite with their families,” or if you are a computer programmer You can do this Say, “I help build the software that forms the basis of popular apps and websites.” Your title is included in the abstract you provide. Whether or not you are a senior web designer doesn’t really matter to the person you are speaking to.

Make a more interesting conversation

Failure to elaborate on what you are doing will lead the conversation to a dead end. Or worse, you run the risk of being pigeonholed at best and pretentious at worst. It is unlikely that you will soon be called “Technoking” or “Supreme Emperor of Accounts Payable”, but luckily, beyond your title, you have more to tell.

Germany is suspending the AstraZeneca vaccine for worry of blood clots

0

LONDON – Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Ireland and the Netherlands have joined the growing list of countries that have stopped using the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University for blood clot problems.

The Dutch government said on Sunday that the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine would not be used until March 29, while Ireland said earlier in the day it had temporarily suspended the shot as a precautionary measure.

On Monday, the federal government also announced that it would stop using it. The vaccine authority, the Paul Ehrlich Institute, requested further investigations. The Italian Medicines Agency made a similar announcement on Monday afternoon, and French President Emmanuel Macron also said that use of the vaccine would be suspended pending a ruling by the EU regulator. Spanish Health Minister Carolina Darias said Monday the country would stop using the shot for at least two weeks, Reuters reported, and Portugal later suspended the vaccine as well.

The World Health Organization tried to downplay the ongoing safety concerns and stated last week that there was no link between the shot and an increased risk of developing blood clots. The United Nations Health Department has urged nations to continue using the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.

Even so, some European countries have already stopped using the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. It added to the worries of the battered vaccination campaign in the region when the German health department warned that a third wave of coronavirus infections had already begun.

Thailand has also stopped the planned use of the vaccine.

The move to suspend use by Dutch and Irish officials came shortly after the Norwegian Medicines Agency announced that three health workers were hospitalized for bleeding, blood clots and low platelet counts after receiving the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. Norway has suspended its vaccination program against Oxford-AstraZeneca.

Geir Bukholm, director of the Infection Control and Environmental Health Department at the Norwegian Public Health Institute, said the Norwegian Medicines Agency will “follow up on these suspected side effects and take the necessary action in this serious situation”.

The European Medicines Agency, the European Medicines Agency, said there was no evidence that Oxford-AstraZeneca’s vaccine caused blood clots and believed that the vaccine’s benefits “continue to outweigh the risks”.

The EMA admitted that some European countries had stopped using the Oxford-AstraZeneca shot, but said vaccinations may continue to be given while a clot investigation is ongoing.

Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin told CNBC on Monday that he anticipated a temporary hiatus and that the country wanted to catch up with its vaccination program quickly.

“No causal effect or anything like that has been identified yet, but as a precautionary measure, in line with the precautionary principle and with great caution, our clinical advice has been to halt the program while the EMA reviews,” he said. “This is an undesirable pause, but I still think it’s important that we heed the advice we received.”

How did AstraZeneca react?

“A careful review of all available safety data from more than 17 million people vaccinated with the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in the European Union (EU) and the UK found no evidence of an increased risk of pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis ( DVT) or thrombocytopenia in a certain age group, gender, group or country, “AstraZeneca said in a statement on Sunday.

The most common side effects of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine, which does not contain the virus and cannot cause Covid, are usually mild or moderate and improve within a few days after vaccination.

A health worker holds a box of the AstraZeneneca vaccine at the Bamrasnaradura Institute for Infectious Diseases in Nonthaburi Province on the outskirts of Bangkok.

The pharmaceutical company said that 15 events involving deep vein thrombosis and 22 events involving pulmonary embolism were reported among those vaccinated in the EU and the United Kingdom.

“This is much less than expected to occur naturally in a general population of this size, and it is similar to other approved COVID-19 vaccines,” said AstraZeneca.

What do the experts say?

“Covid definitely causes bleeding disorders and each of the vaccines prevents Covid disease, including more severe cases,” said Stephen Evans, professor of pharmacoepidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

“Therefore, it is highly likely that the vaccine’s benefits will significantly outweigh the risk of clotting disorders, and the vaccine will prevent other consequences of Covid, including deaths from other causes.”

Evans said it was “perfectly reasonable” to conduct studies on vaccines and coagulation disorders, but added, “It seems a step too far to take precautionary measures that would prevent people from receiving vaccines that prevent disease.”

Many high-income countries – such as the UK, France, Australia and Canada – have decided to continue rolling out the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.

“When there is clear evidence of serious or life-threatening side effects that have important consequences,” Adam Finn, professor of pediatrics at Bristol University, said in a statement.

“So far, however, this has not been the case, and it is highly undesirable to disrupt a complex and urgent program every time people, after receiving a vaccine, develop illnesses that are random and not causal. In situations like this, it is not easy to Making the right call, but a steady hand on the tiller is probably what is needed most, “said Finn.

How you can Monitor Your Third Stimulus Fee

0

Illustration for article titled How to Track Your Third Stimulus PaymentPhoto: Jason Raff (Shutterstock)

With the third round of bailouts sent out this week, the IRS kicked off theirs Get my payment tool over the weekend to help you keep track of yours. The agency is characteristically gnomish in describing their payment status within the tool, so we’ll make it clear what they actually mean.

How to Use the Get My Payment Tool

The tool confirms the payment status of a third stimulus, totaling up to $ 1,400 for individuals plus $ 1,400 for each dependent and whether you qualify. (In case you are wondering, the tool no longer provides information on the first two relief payments as you can only access these funds through a Tax refund in your tax return for 2020).

To confirm the status of your payment, you will be asked to enter your date of birth, social security number, street address and zip code. The tool does not confirm the amount of the check, but it will show you if the payment has already been sent, when it was issued and how it was sent (direct deposit, check by mail or EIP debit card). If you don’t receive a confirmation that a payment has been sent, you will see the following statuses:

  • Payment status not available: This means that the payment has simply not been processed yet. You should check them again later (the IRS only updates the tool once a day so don’t waste your time checking for an update repeatedly). However, this status can also mean that you simply do not qualify for a payment. So confirm that you are indeed eligible, as the income thresholds are more restrictive in this final round of aid payments.
  • Do you need any more information: For some reason the post office was unable to deliver a check or debit card to your address. Per USA todayAccording to the IRS, the easiest way to update is to “file your 2020 tax return with your current address, if you haven’t already. As soon as we receive your current address, we will reissue your payment. “
  • Please try again later: You will receive this status after three failed login attempts within 24 hours, which will also block your account for that day. Check your details and try again the next day.

If you haven’t received your payment yet, don’t panic – they come in batches and may take a little longer to arrive. If you’ve signed up for a direct deposit with the IRS, the deposited payment will likely show up in the next week or so. You may even see a status of “Pending” in the IRS tool. This means that your Stimmy is, and will be, waiting to be deleted by your financial institution deposited soon. However, expect to have to wait longer for checks as they are expected to be sent out in the week of March 24th, followed by EIP cards in the week of March 31st. according to CNET.

The IRS is asking people not to call with questions about the tool, stating that their telephone representatives have no information beyond what is available in the IRS.gov FAQ Here.
