What’s new on (and leaving) Netflix in March 2021

In the absence of generally appealing new films and TV series (No. Oscar hopefuls I’m afraid Netflix seems to be looking to the podcast market this month to see how to keep its massive subscriber base happy. New offers in March include a number of documentary series and specials that I would absolutely love to listen to on podcasts. I’ll watch Well I won’t. (I haven’t even seen Ted Lasso.) But you could.

Operation: Varsity Blues (March 17th) is sure to eyeballs, mesmerized as we all are by the college admissions scandal that toppled cultural titans like Felicity Huffman, Aunt Becky of Full House, and the fashion mogul who once designed a paper towel holder I bought from has a goal. Everyone is still pissed off how they already tampered with Hads a system that was already weighted in their favor to get their kids into “good” colleges, and for good reason.

Murder among the Mormons (March 3rd) is a slightly exploitative true crime story that apparently was already a podcast you subscribed to last year but forgot to listen. It deals with a spate of bombings that terrorized Salt Lake City in the mid-1980s.

Last Chance U: Basketball (March 10), an inspirational story of perseverance in the form of Hoop Dreams, is a spin-off of Netflix’s longtime Last Chance U. It shifts the focus from soccer to college basketball players who are in have had problems in their lives and are studying and must play at the junior college level if they hope to get back into the division.

If you have more fiction in your television diet, I personally am curious to see how well the Pacific Rim film series translates into anime in Pacific Rim: The Black, which launches on March 4th (Giant robots in the anime? It just might work!). The Irregulars (March 26th) has great potential for Buffy / Sabrina: a series about young paranormal crime fighters based on Sherlock Holmes’ famous “Baker Street Irregulars”. And then there’s Moxie (March 3), a dramatic film about a girl starting a movie, ‘Zine to Expose the Sexism in Her High School, which sounds pretty culturally relevant and is also the directorial debut of an Amy Poehler.

Screenshots are very useful whether you’re sending them to a friend, converting them to a meme, inserting them into a Lifehacker article, or remembering something later. If you use a lot of these in iOS then you are no doubt familiar with the preview that appears in the lower left corner after you take one. Sometimes it’s just what you want – one tap and you can crop, annotate, or message this screenshot. However, if you just want to take screenshot by screenshot by screenshot by screenshot, you can delete this preview for tapping to edit.

Or it will – you can’t remove it in any current, stable version of iOS (the latest is iOS 14.4, at this point) – but you should be able to do it in iOS 14.5. If you’d like to install the developer beta to try it out now, we have it previously covered how does it work.

Gadget hacks has the full workaround details. The short version is that you no longer use your phone’s physical buttons to take a screenshot. Instead, you want to create a new shortcut (via the connections App) this marks the action Media> Device> Take Screenshot, as well as the action Apps> Photos> Save to Photo Album. That’s it.

The only problem with this approach is that you have to tap your shortcut or activate it through Siri to take a screenshot. This doesn’t make it so useful to simply hold your phone’s physical buttons to achieve the same effect – with a preview window of course. To fix this, Gadget Hacks suggests assigning the screenshot shortcut to your phone Back tips Feature. That way, you can just tap your iPhone on the buttocks to take a screenshot anytime.

I enjoyed typing back, but I also envision a future where your photo library suddenly has a bunch of screenshots that you didn’t really need or want due to accidental typing. Since you can’t prevent this from happening (unless you are very careful handling and setting your device down), you will likely want to choose a photo album to save your screenshots in, which is not your default camera role.

Consider creating a new photo album, giving it a clever name, and sending all of your typed screenshots there. That way, if it ever gets too bulky, you can simply delete a bunch of photos at once instead of going through your photo library and finding them all. (Screenshots captured with your link will not be displayed in the convenient “Screenshots” media type photos App.)

That little quirk aside, Gadget Hacks’ workaround is surprisingly useful for taking screenshots. In fact, I think tapping the back of your phone is faster than moving your hand to hit that Page + increase volume Button. But maybe it’s just me; I take a lot of screenshots.

A new app to be released within a few weeks could represent the first step towards resuming quarantine-free international travel.

With the travel app of the International Air Travel Association (IATA), governments and airlines can digitally collect, access and share information about the status of the Covid-19 test and the vaccination of individual passengers.

The industry association, which includes 290 airlines, said the tool will make health documentation reviews more efficient while also accelerating the recovery of the hardest-hit travel sector.

“It’s really about digitizing an existing process,” Nick Careen, IATA’s senior vice president of passenger cargo and security, told CNBC on Wednesday.

If we do the manual processing, we will stall the moment we see a reboot.

Nick Careen

Senior Vice President (APCS), IATA

“This is the way forward because if we work manually we will stall the moment we see a restart,” he said.

Singapore Airlines will be the first airline to pilot the tool on a continuous London Heathrow route. Thirty other airlines, including Air New Zealand and Emirates and Etihad in the United Arab Emirates, are scheduled to conduct trials by March and April.

IATA is not the only one to develop so-called digital health passports with which cross-border trips can be resumed. International agencies, governments and technology companies also participate. However, Careen hopes the app will set “minimum requirements” to allow for better interoperability.

“At some point you will see several people in this area,” he said, “but we are setting the baseline in terms of the standard.”

With the new app and the ongoing vaccine rollouts, the global airline association It is estimated that by the end of this year, travel could hit around 50% of 2019 levels.

Previously, analysts had expected a greater increase in travel in early 2021, but the continued spread of the virus and the emergence of new strains have pushed those expectations back on.

“That is the current economic forecast,” said Careen. “There are many variables that contribute to this.”

Bitcoin’s price soared again on Wednesday after a sharp sell-off and surged again above $ 50,000 when Square announced that the $ 170 million worth of the cryptocurrency had been purchased.

According to Coin Metrics, the world’s most valuable digital coin rose 7.5% at 4 a.m. to a price of $ 50,683. The cryptocurrency rose to $ 51,369 a few hours earlier.

Other cryptocurrencies also got a boost: Ether and XRP rose 11.3% and 7.4%, respectively. So-called altcoins or alternative cryptocurrencies often increase in times of the strength of Bitcoin.

On Tuesday, Square announced it had bought 3,318 bitcoins at an average price of around $ 51,235. The fintech company, led by Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, said Bitcoin now accounts for about 5% of its total assets.

It’s not the first time Square has invested in Bitcoin – the company bought the digital currency for $ 50 million last year. Dorsey is one of the best-known proponents of Bitcoin, having once said that he believes it will eventually become the “single currency” of the internet.

Bitcoin had a difficult start to the week, falling from a record high of $ 58,356 on Sunday to just $ 45,501 on Tuesday. It’s not uncommon for Bitcoin to experience wild volatility attacks – the digital token infamously rose to nearly $ 20,000 in 2017 before entering the bear market the following year.

Bitcoin is still up more than 70% since the start of the year and over 400% in the past 12 months. The formidable rally in crypto assets caught the attention of everyone from Tesla CEO Elon Musk to US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

Earlier this week, Yellen described Bitcoin as an “extremely inefficient” means of payment and warned against its use in illegal activities.

“It’s a highly speculative commodity and … I think people should be aware that it can be extremely volatile,” the former Federal Reserve chairman told the New York Times at a DealBook conference. “I am concerned about the possible losses that investors may suffer.”

Musk is now a fan of Bitcoin. His electric car company recently invested $ 1.5 billion in corporate money in the cryptocurrency, and the billionaire tech entrepreneur said it could be “close to widespread adoption” by traditional financial services companies.

But even Musk has suggested that the current price level of Bitcoin may not be sustainable and tweeted over the weekend that he thinks the prices of Bitcoin and competing token ethers are “high”.

Methods to clear your air vents

Though Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks In winter, spring will come faster than we think. And since it was a long quarantine winter, with most of us staying indoors longer than ever, it is likely past us cleaning things like the vents of our homes thoroughly.

There are some pretty complicated ways of doing this yourself leaf blower and Make-shift drill attachmentsbut they’re more of a hassle than it’s worth. To save money and a headache, there are three easy ways to clean your vents and ducts with regular household items.

When to clean

If you’re lucky enough to have central air, you probably don’t think about the vents unless something goes wrong or the filter needs to be replaced. However, changing the filters once a month only solves half the problem if the vent itself just circulates dust and flakes of skin directly into your home. House maintenance center Check home warranties recommends cleaning the vents once or twice a year to keep the paths clean.

Cleaning the vents early in spring and fall helps keep airflow cleaner all year round. However, even more often – two or three times a year – if you have pets or anyone in the household with respiratory conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive diseases, consider lung disease.

Three ways to clean your air ducts

You don’t need your own cleaning kit to clean your air ducts (this may be an exciting DIY project for you, but pretty much unnecessary). You can clean them with a few simple household items – especially your vacuum cleaner, a butter knife. a washcloth, a tub of soapy water, and a sponge.

Clean with a vacuum cleaner, butter knife and rag

First, take your vacuum cleaner with the hose extension (or Handivac) and vacuum the visible dust outside of the ventilation opening. (You can also use a Can of air to blast stubborn dust from the vent registers.) Then remove the Vent register, this is the grille over the canal entrance. Some registers are removed with a firm pull, while others are secured with screws and require a screwdriver. Make sure the screws are stored in a safe place so that they can be reinstalled afterwards. Then dampen your skewer with a small amount of water (the rag should be wet but not enough to soak the vent), wrap it over a butter knife, and insert it between the vent blades to remove any dust stuck in it . Home Advisor provides useful tips and instructions for performing this technique on your website.

In the tub

For a more thorough cleaning of your ventilation coils, you can take them to the sink or tub. Soak them in soapy water for three to five minutes to loosen the dirt. Then take a sponge and remove any remaining dirt. Rinse with the faucet or detachable shower head and lay out the registers to dry. This should take between 5 and 10 minutes. If you’re lying around, you can use Turtle Wax or a similar product to prevent future dust from clinging to your air vents.

Illustration for article titled How To Clean Your Air Vents

Go with a vacuum in the vent passages

Use a regular vacuum cleaner or a standard one Shop Vac To vacuum the outside of your vent first, then insert the long hose or arm of your vacuum cleaner into the open duct to vacuum the accumulated dust in the duct path. Repeat for every air vent throughout the house. This may take some time depending on the number of vents. However, it pays to minimize the circulation of dust and allergens in your home.

When to call a professional

If you feel unable to clean them yourself or if you have more serious work to do, consider hiring a professional. The EPA offers a selection list of situations that require professional attention when it comes to cleaning your sewer system, including:

  • Significant visible mold growth occurs in hard surface ducts (e.g. sheet metal ducts) or on other components of your heating and cooling system.
  • The channels are infested with vermin (e.g. rodents or insects).
  • The ducts are clogged with inordinate amounts of dust and debris and / or particles are actually being released into the house from your utility registers.

While mold and rodent infestation are bigger problems for your home, some small components of your HVAC system require professional attention for regular maintenance and cleaning. Hiring a professional is also best for more sensitive parts of your system such as fan motors, heat exchangers, and cooling coils that may be covered in dust. These require a little more experience than your standard homeowner can provide with a vacuum and butter knife.

How Meghan Markle modified the royal household without end

While giving an unusually raw look at the toll life under the microscope can take on one’s psyche, even a royal psyche, Meghan and Harry wouldn’t have been nearly as free to express their opinions as they were in the Last month you would have stayed full-time with the “company”.

“I wasn’t sure what to tell you,” Meghan said in a video message about the death of May 25th George Floyd After a Minneapolis police officer (since his release) who pleaded not guilty of second degree murder held his knee by Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes. “I wanted to say the right thing … I realized that the only wrong thing is not to say anything.”

Which is basically the exact opposite approach that the royal family has historically taken with so many things, big or small.

On July 1, Meghan and Harry had a virtual chat with young executives at the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust and spoke openly about racism and inequality. Calling the ongoing protests and apparently heightened awareness around the world, Meghan said “a moment of reckoning” and said, “This self-reflection acknowledges what mistakes we have all made. Each of us, individually, what have we done in our past? … So many people say, “I have to own this.”

On the other hand, so many people do not take any responsibility for what plagues society.

“When it comes to institutional, systemic racism, it’s there and it stays there because someone somewhere benefits,” Harry said. “We cannot deny or ignore the fact that we were all brought up and brought up to see the world differently. However, once you realize these prejudices exist, you have to acknowledge them.”

Meghan added, “It’s not just in the big moments, it’s in the quiet moments where racism and subconscious prejudice lie and flourish. It makes it confusing for many people to understand the role they play in it, both passive as well as active. “”

Why are there nonetheless private checks?

Why are there nonetheless private checks?

Illustration for article titled Why Are There Still Personal Checks?Photo: jwohlfeil (Shutterstock)

Personal checks are always falling into it Disuse. They are like fax machines – outdated, slow, and only a hardened group of people still using them, even if they are less practical. Is there a good reason to keep using checks? In some cases, yes – although you still need to be careful about identity theft.

What is a personal check?

Unlike the glowing rectangles on phones or debit terminal displays that we typically use for shopping, checks are paper rectangles that take a long time to process in the mail – usually days or weeks later. During this time, you need to make sure that the money is available until the check is cleared. Otherwise, the check will bounce and you will be charged approximately $ 35 average. Worse, if you want to use checks, you have to pay them often –up to 30 cents per check, depending on your bank (some offer them for free).

Despite all of these negatives, there are some instances where you have no choice but to use personal checks or where you can save money by using these checks.

When would I even use a personal check?

As many renters can attest, not all companies or organizations accept credit cards or debits, especially for large purchases. This is because some companies have low margins and want to avoid transaction costs, or because they are large companies like utilities or government agencies that are slow to accept plastic. And if they accept debits or credits, these are often processed by third-party payment processing companies that charge a fee every time they are used. This makes checks a more convenient option when you’re looking to save money.

Another overlooked reason people use checks is this 10% of adults in the US do not use the Internet. In this case, it is easier to pay bills with a check than to pay in person with cash. And some people simply prefer the traceability of checks, as you can access a canceled check through your bank once it’s cleared, making it easier to resolve a dispute with a creditor or company later.

If you’ve ever received a check from your grandma stuck in a birthday card, you know that checks are also a preferred way to send someone a cash gift.

Are Personal Checks Safe?

Not quite. The problem with checks is that they contain your banking information (sometimes your address) and are processed by many different people before they are actually cashed, making them a target for identity thieves. One of the reasons debit and credit cards became increasingly popular is because they were seen as a safer way to buy.

When using checks, avoid adding additional personal information (such as your date of birth, phone number, or driver’s license number) in the note field of the check. If you can avoid having checks printed with your address on them, do this. You should also keep your checkbook in a safe place, ideally in a locked drawer at home.

SINGAPORE – Stocks traded mixed in Asia-Pacific markets on Wednesday as investors became cautious, despite Fed chairman Jerome Powell saying overnight that some concerns about higher interest rates and inflation should be addressed .

In Australia, the benchmark index ASX 200 fell 0.92% due to losses in most sectors, including a 0.57% decline in the heavily weighted financial sub-index. Among the so-called Big Four banks in the country, ANZ shares fell 0.63%, Commonwealth Bank shares fell 0.66% and Westpac fell 0.97%. National Australia Bank stocks were hovering near the flatline.

Japanese markets returned to trading after closing for a holiday on Tuesday. The Nikkei 225 fell 0.74% while the Topix index fell 0.88%.

South Korean stocks bucked the broader downtrend as the Kospi index reversed early losses, rising 0.44%. The Kosdaq index rose 0.51%. In Singapore, the Straits Times Index rose 1.41% while the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong fell 0.52%.

Mainland Chinese stocks were also lower: the Shanghai Composite fell 0.49% while the Shenzhen Component Index fell 0.55%.

The session in Asia follows a mixed end on Wall Street, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average reversed steep losses following Powell’s remarks.

Powell testimony

Powell said in his testimony to the US Congress that the American economy is far from its employment and inflation targets and that it will likely take time to make significant further progress. He added that inflation was still “weak” and that the Fed was committed to current policies.

Central banks see the rise in yields mixed, according to Tapas Strickland, director of economics and markets at National Australia Bank.

“Chairman Powell managed to tread that fine line of advocacy for market action but failed to replicate his reticent attitude,” Strickland wrote in a morning note.

Currencies and oil

In the forex market, the US dollar fell 0.15% against a basket of competitors to 90.034 after previously hitting lows of 89.982. The Australian dollar gained 0.34% and changed hands at $ 0.7938 while the Japanese yen was trading at $ 105.4 per dollar.

Carol Kong, a currency strategist at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, said Powell told Congress that the greenback fell “in line” with US stocks, but the currency’s movements were “modest”.

Better growth prospects for the US and the world remain in line with a downtrend in the countercyclical dollar, Kong said.

Elsewhere, oil prices fell. US crude oil futures fell 0.7% to $ 61.24 a barrel during Asian trading hours on Wednesday, while the global benchmark Brent index fell 0.4% to $ 65.11.
