Johnson & Johnson published numbers today of their Phase 3 clinical trials (the final step before applying for an emergency permit) and it looks like we will soon have a third viable COVID-19 vaccine in the US.

This vaccine is a little different from the other two. Those from Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna are both mRNA vaccineswhich require two cans and must be stored at freezing temperatures or in special ultra-cold packaging. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine, like most other vaccines available at a pharmacy or doctor’s office, can be stored at refrigerator temperature. And it only requires one dose.

The new vaccine was found to be 85% effective in preventing serious COVID-19 illnesses, and in the US it was 72% effective in preventing “moderate to severe” illnesses, according to the press release. In other countries, the effectiveness appeared to be less, except for 56% in South Africa, where the most common strain of COVID is a regarding the variant. It is not yet clear whether the difference is due to the variant or to some other factor or combination of factors.

None of the people who received the vaccine experienced hospitalizations or deaths from COVID once they were 28 days after their first and only dose.

Even if this vaccine turns out to be less effective than the mRNA vaccines overall, the fact that it only takes one dose and can be dispensed at refrigerator temperature may mean it can reach – and get to them – more people faster than these vaccines.

There’s a reason people argue about how much they hate to be Talk on Reddit threads. This is because promoting mutual respect is an essential part of making your point of view heard and accepted.

That is, when you put forward a detailed argument based on verifiable facts, you need to give your opponent the same courtesy to listen politely even if his reasoning is mixed up. Stories evoke empathy

Illustrating a point with a personal story can make someone’s heart beat faster than raw facts just can’t. It’s actually a matter of brain chemistry. As Zak wrote, telling a story that attracts attention can stimulate the production of Oxytocin in the brain– a neuropeptide most commonly associated with increased production during childbirth, but also in moments of social appreciation and attachment:

As social beings who regularly connect with strangers, stories are an effective way of conveying important information and values ​​from one person or community to the next. Personal and emotionally compelling stories are more brain engaging and memorable than just giving a set of facts.

As Zak wrote for her Harvard Business Review In 2014, oxytocin is produced when people are presented with examples of kindness:

We are often better off engaging with a person’s ability to empathize than listing facts in an ostensible attempt to gain an argument.

Empathy is more convincing than facts

It might be a little crazy that straight facts are less convincing than they should be, but empathy prevails when it comes to getting someone to understand your point of view. A study published on Monday in the Procedure of the National Academy of Sciences drives this house on.
