BBC needs to pay 1.5 million kilos in “debt” to make amends for the Martin Bashir scandal to a charity chosen by royals

The BBC is expected to pay £ 1.5million in “debt” to redress the Martin Bashir scandal, it was reported last night.

The money from the donation will go to a royal family charity, claims The Mail on Sunday.

The donation will include the money the company made from selling the global rights to Bashir’s 1995 bomb interview.

An investigation by Lord Dyson in May found that the journalist had used “fraudulent methods” to obtain the interview, and that there had been a “pathetically ineffective” internal investigation.

The damning investigation revealed that the “rogue reporter” Bashir forged bank statements and spun nasty stories to gain the trust of the vulnerable princess.

An independent investigation by former Judge Lord Dyson concluded that then-BBC News and Updates boss Lord Tony Hall and other executives whitewashed concerns about how Bashir bagged the scoop in 1995.

This is an admirable decision, despite the fact that it obviously cannot undo the damage done

Rosa Monckton

He commissioned fake bank statements to convince them that MI5 officials and the media were being paid to provide information about them.

Royal sources are believed to be involved in deciding how the BBC’s money will be spent.

It is funded by BBC Studios, the company’s non-taxpayer-funded commercial trading arm.

Diana’s close friend Rosa Monckton said last night: “This is an admirable decision, despite the fact that it obviously cannot undo the damage done or obliterate the BBC’s guilt.”

The decision to donate the money comes amid discussions initiated by the Duke of Cambridge, the BBC and palace bosses, claims The Mail on Sunday.

“DRAW A LINE UNDER THE AFFAIR”

It is understood that the donation idea was first suggested by Diana’s brother Earl Spencer, who said that some of the BBC’s money should go to Diana’s charities.

William is reportedly keen to continue the investigation and “see what comes of it”.

Current CEO Tim Davie, however, believes the donations could put an end to the whole affair.

He reportedly sent letters of unconditional apology to the Queen, Charles, William, Harry and Earl Spencer.

The letter allegedly contains the admission that “Martin Bashir used lies and forged documents to gain access to the princess” and that he “made a number of lurid and untrue claims”.

It comes after graphic artist Matt Wiessler, who whistled for Martin Bashir’s fraud to secure the interview, is reported to have received £ 750,000 in compensation from the BBC.

The BBC and Kensington Palace declined to reply.

Abbott dispatches 2,500 medical staff out of state as youthful sufferers crowd hospitals

DALLAS – Texas hospitals are suspending voting and reaching out to 2,500 health workers from other states to tackle a surge in Covid cases as younger and healthier patients who haven’t been vaccinated against the days of treatment of the virus crowd.

The state is preparing for its most aggressive fight to date against the coronavirus as the Delta variant spreads across the country, hitting states with low vaccination rates and relaxed public health measures, particularly in the south and the Midwest.

Covid cases in the Lone Star State have exploded in the past few weeks. Texas averaged about 15,419 new cases per day on Wednesday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, up 34% from a week ago and more than double the seven-day average of 6,762 two weeks ago.

“What is worrying about the development is that the number of cases is growing much faster,” said Dr. Trish Perl, director of the infectious diseases division at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

“We are seeing unvaccinated people who are younger than they were earlier in the pandemic, when we saw many hospitalizations over 65,” said Perl. “Now 18- to 49-year-olds are the biggest and highest gains, and many of these people have no underlying medical conditions.”

The spike in cases comes as Republican Governor Greg Abbott wages war on local school and government officials who reintroduced masked mandates, threatening $ 1,000 fines for communities and officials who oppose him. He initially banned local mask mandates in an implementing ordinance of 18

The second order also prohibited all public and private entities, government agencies, from requiring individuals to be vaccinated or to provide evidence of vaccination.

Local officials across Texas are defying state leaders and turning to the courts to challenge Abbott.

A district judge in Bexar County, home of San Antonio, on Tuesday issued an injunction against Abbott’s mask ban, which allowed local officials to restore mandates and other emergency orders to combat the Delta variant.

About 300 miles north, the Dallas Independent School District issued a temporary mask requirement for all counties on Monday.

Clay Jenkins, a Dallas County Democrat, followed suit with a new mask mandate for schools, businesses and county buildings Wednesday after a local judge issued an injunction preventing Abbott from enforcing his ban.

Abbott has vowed to fight the restraining orders. In a joint press release with Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, the two said they are relying on personal responsibility to protect “the rights and freedoms of all Texans.”

“Attention-grabbing judges and mayors opposed orders from the very beginning of the pandemic, and the courts ruled on our side – the law,” Paxton said in the statement. “I am confident that the outcome of all lawsuits will come with freedom and individual choice, not mandates and government abuse.”

Austin Mayor Steve Adler, a Democrat, said he was weighing a citywide mask mandate when “the science, the data, and the doctors tell us this has to be something to keep the community safe”.

“Local school districts should be able to make this decision themselves in order to offer their children the best possible protection,” Adler said in an interview with CNBC on July 28th.

“I haven’t heard any scientific or data-driven rationale for policies that do not allow the enforcement of masking to protect public health,” Adler said, adding that he “strongly recommends that all children in schools wear” masks, and that teachers and guests at school do the same. “

Meanwhile, hospital stays continue to rise. Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital in Houston and St. Luke’s Hospital in nearby Woodlands have set up overflow tents outside to cope with the influx of patients, most of whom local officials say are unvaccinated. Texas lags behind the US in vaccinations, with 53.6% of the total population receiving at least one vaccination, compared with 58.9% nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Abbott asked the Texas Hospital Association earlier this week to postpone voluntary medical procedures to free up beds in the intensive care unit, and said the state is hiring 2,500 medical staff outside of the state to relieve exhausted doctors and nurses.

“This help couldn’t come quickly enough. Many hospitals have already shut down non-essential services and are rerouting patients to add staff, ”Ted Shaw, president of the Texas Hospital Association, said in a statement Tuesday. “The hospital industry is losing frontline staff, especially nurses, to burnout and illness; many left the profession due to the extreme nature of the work during a relentless pandemic.”

More than 90% of all intensive care beds in Texas were occupied on Wednesday, according to the Department of Health and Human Services, with around 40% dedicated to Covid patients as of Wednesday.

While cases and deaths across the country have receded from their record highs in January, they’re on the rise again – but much faster in Texas. The state’s death toll is also rising, with a seven-day average of 57 daily Covid deaths on Monday, 36% more than last week, but below the record average of more than 341 deaths per day in late January 2021 data, according to Hopkins.

“It’s honestly heartbreaking. There is this feeling that they are invincible, but that’s not true, we are seeing seriously ill people,” said Perl of UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She said vaccinations are “the absolute best defense”.

Find out how to establish venom hemlock as a ramification of the invasive species

Photo: Marina Lesnitskaya (Shutterstock)

Let’s say you’re taking a late summer stroll and come across a piece of familiar-looking flowers with long, thin stems and tiny white flowers that grow together into round clusters. They appear to be the tip of Queen Anne – a flowering plant you’ve seen in flower arrangements that you may have made crowns out of as a kid.

But they could also be a poison hemlock and that’s not a chance you want to take. Let’s take a look at the differences between Queen Anne’s lace and poison hemlock – an invasive species and currently widespread throughout the country.

What is a poison hemlock?

Poisonous hemlock didn’t originate in the United States but has been growing across the country since someone brought it from Europe to use as a decorative flower in the 19th century, according to the Michigan State University expansion. Unfortunately, any decorative use of the plant is overshadowed by the fact that it is an invasive species and is poisonous to humans, pets, livestock, and other animals.

The tricky part is that Poison Hemlock, like other members of the carrot family, sprouts white umbrella flowers – clusters of small flowers that grow together from several short stems that resemble an umbrella. And of all the members of the family, the poison hemlock is most closely related to the wild carrot, also known as Queen Anne’s lace, and is also widely available.

How to tell the difference between poison hemlock and Queen Anne lace

Aside from looking alike, both poison hemlock and Queen Anne’s tip are biennial and only produce leaves in the first year, then white flowers and thousands of seeds in the second year, and then die. Now let’s take a look at the differences, courtesy of the Michigan State University expansion:

Heyday

  • Poison hemlock: June to August
  • Head of Queen Anne: July to September

Stems

  • Venom Hemlock: Hollow stems that are green with purple spots
  • Queen Anne’s tip: Solid green stems

leaves

  • Poison hemlock: Hairless leaves
  • Head of Queen Anne: Fine hairs on the leaves

Scent

  • Venom Hemlock: Has an unpleasant odor when rubbed
  • Head of Queen Anne: Roots smell like carrots

height

  • Venom Hemlock: 6-10 feet tall at maturity
  • Queen Anne’s tip: 1-2 feet tall at maturity

How poison hemlock can make you sick

Any part of the poison hemlock plant is toxic to humans (and animals) if ingested Michigan State University expansion explained. So, in any case, don’t eat it and make sure kids don’t know either.

Additionally, Venom Hemlock’s juice contains a phototoxic compound that you don’t want to get on your skin as it can cause ultra-sensitivity to UV light, which can cause blisters after exposure to the sun. But luckily, it’s not a poison ivy situation where light brushing against the leaves can cause a terrible reaction. Instead, in a poison hemlock plant, the sap occurs only in the stem. Even so, it’s a good idea not to touch it at all.

Dr. Scott Gottlieb expects Covid to be “endemic” within the US after the delta surge

0

Dr. Scott Gottlieb told CNBC on Friday that he expected the coronavirus to become an endemic virus in the US and other western countries after the recent surge in Delta variant infections settled.

“We are going from a pandemic to a more endemic virus, at least here in the United States and probably in other western markets,” said Gottlieb on “Squawk Box”. An endemic virus is one that remains relatively infrequent in the American population, such as seasonal flu.

Gottlieb – Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration from 2017 to 2019 during the Trump administration and now a board member at several companies, including vaccine maker Pfizer – has previously said that “true herd immunity” for Covid in new infections may indeed be impossible for years to come .

“It’s not a binary point in time, but I think after we get through this delta wave this becomes more of an endemic disease where you see some kind of persistent infection through winter … but not at the level” we certainly do experience right now, and it doesn’t necessarily depend on the booster shots, “added Gottlieb on Friday.

Gottlieb said he anticipates the spread of the highly transmissible Delta variant will remain remarkable in the coming weeks.

“You will probably see the course of the delta wave between the end of September and October,” said Gottlieb. “Hopefully we’ll be on the other side, or come the other side, sometime in November, and we won’t see a big bout of infection on the other side of this delta wave after that.”

The tri-state region of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut will see a spike in delta cases as rates slow in the south, Gottlieb said.

“This is a big country and the delta wave will be regionalized to sweep across the whole country,” he said. “Hopefully by September you will see the other side of that curve very clearly in the south, but falls will increase in the northeast, in the Great Lakes region, maybe in the Pacific Northwest. … It will likely coincide with a restart at school, some companies are coming back if you look at last summer too. “

Gottlieb’s comments on Friday morning came before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gave final approval to begin distributing Covid vaccine booster vaccines to recipients of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines who have weakened immune systems. The CDC’s approval followed a unanimous vote on Friday to recommend booster vaccinations for its Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. It now enables the shots to reach vulnerable people such as organ transplant recipients, cancer and HIV patients.

The day before, the FDA approved booster injections for people with compromised immune systems. They make up about 2.7% of the US adult population, but account for about 44% of hospitalized breakthrough Covid cases among fully vaccinated people, according to recent data from the CDC.

Gottlieb said the ability to give these Americans booster vaccinations, which help strengthen their immunity levels, will push the US further into the “endemic phase”.

“I think this is both a political call and a public health call for US officials to continue trying to promote initial vaccinations before they move on to booster vaccinations,” Gottlieb said of the FDA’s announcement on Thursday.

Some of the people Gottlieb believes should get Covid booster vaccinations soon include nursing home residents, who tend to be older and have underlying medical conditions that make them more prone to Covid. That’s especially worrying as the Delta variant invades the northern states and continues to postpone its first round of vaccination in the rearview mirror, he said.

“I would be concerned about nursing homes entering these environments now, given that there is a patient population that is likely to have declining immunity and is more vulnerable than it was five months ago.”

Disclosure: Scott Gottlieb is a CNBC employee and a member of the board of directors of Pfizer, genetic testing startup Tempus, health technology company Aetion, and biotechnology company Illumina. He is also co-chair of the Healthy Sail Panel of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and Royal Caribbean.

What’s humane pest management and the way does it work?

In a perfect world, we would choose who – and what – to share our home with. Unfortunately, real life doesn’t always play out like this, and it’s entirely possible that we end up with some uninvited roommates from time to time.

Even if you no longer have to live with human roommates, it doesn’t mean much to rodents and other living things that are constantly in search of food and / or shelter. Sure, you may not be keen on these uninvited renters, and while you may want to evict them, you might not want them to die in the process. This is where humane pest control comes into play. Here’s what you should know about these no-kill methods.

What is humane pest control?

Basically, humane pest control – sometimes referred to as “wildlife removal” – involves removing unwanted animals from your home or garden without killing them and preventing them from getting in at all.

Accordingly Humane Society International, Once you discover that you have a pest problem, it is best to take action right away. Start by identifying and removing the food source that brought the living things to your garden. (This includes securing any trash, recycling, and / or compost bins that you have outside.) Then, use a no-kill method to evict and seal the animal (s) out of your home any holes or other access points that would allow them to re-enter.

How does humane pest control work?

While there is a lot you can do yourself to prevent unwanted animals from getting into your home or yard, the removal component is a little tougher. For example, setting traps without killing and then moving animals may seem compassionate, but according to the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA), it is neither a permanent nor a humane solution.

G / O Media can receive a commission

In many cases, it is best to have a professional remove it. But that, too, poses another challenge: make sure you choose a company that uses methods that do not harm the animals in the process. Humane Society International has put together instructions to selecting a wildlife removal service, including the questions that need to be asked to determine if the company’s practices are truly humane and ethical.

The right way to wash your automotive with out water (and why you would possibly wish to)

Image for the article titled How To Wash Your Car Without Water (And Why You Should Consider It)

Photo: Kurhan (Shutterstock)

Whether you usually wash your car (or SUV, truck, van, etc.) yourself or take it to a car wash, you probably don’t get to it as often as you’d like. A DIY wash job saves money, but not necessarily time – especially when you factor in all of the tubing.

For various reasons – including prolonged droughts and water scarcity in certain parts of the country – some people choose to wash their car without water. But is that bad for your car? So, does it work? Here’s what you should know.

How to wash a car without water

Before we get into that, we should note that if your vehicle is completely covered in mud, dirt, and / or dust, you will likely need to use water. But for routine washes, it is possible to go waterless. So what’s up with it?

Instead of the usual set-up with a hose, bucket of water and cleaning solution, waterless car wash products are premixed and delivered in the form of a spray. The idea is to spray the solution on the parts of your car that you want to clean, and then wipe those sections clean.

In an article for the CNET roadshow, Brian Cooley – who used the waterless technique himself – gives a few pointers:

  • Use the right products: Waterless car wash sprays are not the same as general purpose car sprays. “You need something that loosens and lubricates dirt so you don’t damage the paintwork on your car or become frustrated removing stubborn dirt,” writes Cooley.
  • Wipe with a microfiber cloth: Not only are they super soft, according to Cooley, but they also trap particles quickly. Kitchen and paper towels, on the other hand, make the process longer, don’t work very well, and therefore can create the impression that you need to scrub harder than necessary, which can damage the paintwork of your car.
  • Towel right: In addition to the type of towel, according to Cooley, your technique is also important. So what does good towel technology look like? “You want to use a wiping pattern that doesn’t cross over while you relentlessly flip or change the towel,” he writes.

G / O Media can receive a commission

Is It A Good Idea To Wash Your Car Without Water?

As with most things, it depends. If you live in a water scarce location or are trying to reduce your water usage regardless of location, a waterless car wash is a great option in many situations.

As mentioned before, really dusty / dirty / muddy vehicles likely need some water. But for regular amounts of street grime and grime, a waterless car wash should be enough, according to Cooley. Just be sure to purchase the right cleaning product and towel for the best results.

Everybody will “most likely” want a booster dose of Covid vaccines someday, says the epidemiologist

0

The epidemiologist Dr. Anne Rimoin told CNBC that she and Dr. Anthony Fauci, Senior Medical Advisor to the White House, agreed when he said that one day everyone will “likely” need a booster dose of Covid-19 vaccines.

“Well, I think Dr. Fauci is right,” said Rimoin, a professor of epidemiology at the UCLA School of Public Health.

“What will warrant a booster is when we see real, diminishing effectiveness of this vaccine in saving people from serious illness, hospitalization, or death. We’re not there yet, but if we are, then we go” a booster need.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday gave final approval to give Covid-19 booster vaccinations to recipients of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, hours after a key panel unanimously voted to allow third doses for immunocompromised Americans advocate. The CDC’s decision followed the approval of the booster vaccination for immunocompromised patients by the Food and Drug Administration late Thursday.

Rimoin told CNBC The News with Shepard Smith that both agencies have made a “really important” decision when it comes to the immunocompromised population.

“When they got the vaccine, they didn’t really develop an immune response enough to protect themselves against this virus,” said Rimoin. “Therefore, both the FDA and CDC are currently recommending an additional dose for these people, which studies have shown to improve the immune response in about 1/3 to 1/2 of the population.”

Immunocompromised patients make up approximately 2.7% of the US adult population and 44% of breakthrough hospital-treated infections that make someone infected even after being fully vaccinated.
