Hello, my little happy hour connoisseurs. I wanted to tell you that after four years and over 200 cocktails, I’m going to take a little break from this column. The truth is, I just don’t drink as much as I used to and my passion for cocktails has diminished. This isn’t fair to all of you, so I’m handing the 3-ingredient happy hour over to someone who can give the topic the attention it deserves.

I leave you in very competent hands. I don’t know because Devojka trained at Attaboy (although it doesn’t hurt), but because I enjoyed several drinks made by her skillful hands – some of which made it onto this column – and they were all delicious.

We’re also changing the number of ingredients. I’ve pretty much run out of three-ingredient libations, so let’s increase it to four to do some sort of reset and let Devojka start a new tablet. I can’t promise I’ll never write a cocktail recipe again – and I’ll still be there – but I’m excited to see what devojka and one extra ingredient can do.

Greetings and love,
Claire

As I grew up, my siblings and I would leave our home in California every other summer to visit relatives in Skopje, Macedonia. I remember when I was seven and had lunch at my aunt’s house on Sundays, moving restlessly in my chair, a touch of velor oriflame lipstick on my cheek from the exuberant greetings Tetki and Babi gave me delivered. The table was littered with Turkish coffee cups after dinner, the air was thick with secondhand smoke and beauty counter perfume, while chain-smoking adults chatted and clapped around me, stopping only occasionally to tell me, “абе земи касни си, не се срами. “(Don’t be shy, eat.)

Summer in Skopje is oppressive and hot, making the already picky palate of a child even more difficult to appease. The cocoa is too bitter, the jam too syrupy and sweet, the Русска salata laden with mayo is sweating in the wedding dishes – a horror show. I remember desperately turning my attention to a crystal bowl full of neon-coated candy – barely exciting for that Walgreens candy aisle veteran. I half-heartedly read through the selection of unfamiliar flavors; Instead of blue raspberry, green apple or watermelon, there were sour cherries, apricots, wild blueberries and mountain strawberries. I remember plucking out the apricot, unceremoniously sticking it in my mouth, and being utterly shocked by the lively taste boost I was experiencing.

I can imagine that the experience of sipping a paper plane for the first time must be like this for so many people – a kaleidoscopic hit made of lacquered nectar that is fresh, juicy, light, sweet, tart, bitter and unexpectedly complex at the same time is. It was definitely for me. In what I like to refer to as “sorbet cocktails”, Sam Ross’ beloved classic is a standout classic. And like its peers, it has to be shaken, bubbling and giggling in its coupé, ready to be pushed back while it is still very much alive. But shaking a cocktail to perfection is hard work. It requires energy that (at least for me) is easily consumed by the July heat and the weight of life in the modern world. For a cocktail that goes down in a few simple sips, the juice is sometimes not worth the juice.

For the lazy evening when you need refreshment and you don’t mind – maybe even enjoy – sipping the mushy remains of a drink that’s past its prime (I like flavored ice chips, damn it), may I suggest your paper Planning on putting on crushed ice? My preferred version of this has a slight modification: I use the original version’s Campari instead of its later successor, Aperol – but you can of course use the Aperol if you want; both versions are equally divine. To make a paper airplane you will need:

  • 3/4 ounce lemon juice (fresh only please)
  • 1/2 ounce of Campari with ¼ oz of plain syrup or 3/4 of aperol
  • 3/4 ounce Amaro Nonino *
  • 3/4 ounce bourbon

* No substitutions I’m afraid. While I’ve seen it with other amaro, there is no way to get essentially close to what is at the heart of this cocktail. While I moan at the annual markup of the stuff, a bottle of Amaro Nonino is relatively easy to find and a wonderful addition to your home bar.

Put the ingredients in a tumbler and swirl well. Fill a glass with crushed ice and strain a quarter of the mixture into it, then press the ice into place with the bottom of the tumbler (the liquid melts the ice a little, which creates more space in the glass to maximize crushed ice capacity. ) Add more ice and strain the rest of the liquid into the glass filled with ice. Top up with more crushed ice. No garnish necessary, but if you need accessories, a slice of orange will do.

A note on ice: if you are using crushed ice produced by your freezer, please fill a tall mug full before you start making your drink. These things are slow and your cocktail will wither and water down before you’ve poured the last portion of the mixture in. Tragic.

Tuition insurance coverage might assist with uncertainty resulting from Covid

0

Even before the pandemic, Eden Schiano, 19, had concerns about her freshman year.

Schiano suffered from anorexia in high school and wasn’t sure how fall 2020 would go as a freshman at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Being largely isolated in her dormitory quickly took its toll. “I was in my dorm, taking online classes and starting to lose weight,” she said. In October, Schiano decided to retire.

Whether because of mental illness or concerns about Covid, the number of students taking time off has skyrocketed in the past year.

However, withdrawing in the middle of the semester could be associated with high financial costs.

More from Personal Finance:
College plans recovery, although cost is a major concern
Hundreds of colleges say Covid vaccines will be mandatory
Colleges and unvaccinated students face a stalemate

While a number of colleges and universities have announced that they will reimburse fees and room and board if campus closes again, reimbursement policies vary from school to school – and almost all have drawn the line on tuition.

Depending on when a student de-signs out during a semester, a school’s refund policy can reimburse a significant amount (especially if it is done within the first month or so of the semester, although this varies by school).

However, refunds are usually staggered and most schools don’t give any money back after the fifth week of classes.

There is another way of doing it: Many schools also offer protection from outside lessons or this can be obtained directly from a provider such as GradGuard or AWG Dewar.

Tuition insurance, also known as Tuition Reimbursement Insurance, generally covers families for medical or psychological reasons, with some obvious exclusions, such as:

GradGuard’s tuition insurance starts at $ 39.95 for $ 2,500 per semester, although most families buy $ 10,000 per semester in insurance that starts at $ 106 to cover their own expenses with no loans and grants protect. This covers tuition fees as well as financial losses from room and board and tuition fees.

Schiano said her tuition insurance helped ease pressure to stay in school despite her deteriorating condition.

“It took away the shame and guilt factor of having to go and feel like it was going to be such a burden on my parents,” she said.

Even though nearly two-thirds of parents, or 63%, said their child’s plans after high school returned to what they were before the coronavirus crisis, cost remains a top concern.

Tuition and fees plus room and board for a four-year private college averaged $ 50,770 for the 2020-21 school year; It was $ 22,180 at four-year state colleges, according to the College Board, which tracks trends in college awards and student grants.

When you add other expenses, the total bill can be in excess of $ 70,000 a year for students at some private colleges, or even for students out of state attending public four-year schools.

At the same time, Covid cases are on the rise again, and the possibility of further campus closures has sparked renewed interest in college reimbursement policies and tuition insurance.

Trisha Jung recently bought a GradGuard policy for her stepdaughter, who will be a junior at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. “It just seemed like a good idea based on the world of today.”

Jung, who is from Nashville, Tennessee, said she wouldn’t have considered doing this before the pandemic. “Life is full of unexpected events,” she said.

“Since the beginning of Covid, we’ve seen dramatic interest from schools, students and families,” said Natalie Tarangioli, Marketing Director at GradGuard, which now works with more than 400 universities.

Before the pandemic, health conditions such as mononucleosis and pneumonia were among the top diseases that stood in the way of timely or even conclusion.

“The real concern last year was that the students would get Covid; There are additional mental health and wellbeing concerns this year, ”Tarangioli said.

“We have already more than doubled the number of tuition insurance policies sold this fall compared to last year,” she added.

Easy methods to begin engaged on the radio

The radio can put you in a really good mood. From upbeat songs to delightful low-budget local ads, there is always something to enjoy. So it’s understandable if you’ve ever wondered how you can be one of the people who make this enjoyable experience possible. So if you want to get into the radio industry, we have a few tips for you.

Where can you study the radio industry?

Whether you want to be on the air or produce behind the scenes, there is a lot to learn and a lot of time to learn about the industry. Mike Adam, who hosts New York’s WNEW-FM every day from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., recommends checking out specific programs and schools that can help you really focus on the radio industry.

“I went to the Connecticut School of Broadcasting after high school,” he told Lifehacker. “I liked that it was a vocational school and that an internship was guaranteed. In the end, I did an internship at iHeart Hartford, Connecticut and was hired on the Power 104.1 Street team. “

From there, he said, he “worked” [his] up the ladder ”and worked in the areas of promotion, production and programming.

You can also study radio in your spare time or at a larger school. Ben DiCostanzo, a 28-year-old commercial content manager for iHeartRadio, told Lifehacker, “In college, I fell in love with my university radio station WSOU, Seton Hall’s pirate radio. I graduated from Seton Hall with a degree in broadcasting and media and then applied for all kinds of jobs in the industry after graduation. iHeartRadio was the first to give me a chance. “

Aim for a variety of experiences

Did you notice that both Adam and DiCostanzo said they spent their early years in the industry applying and working for a variety of jobs? That’s common – and you should do it no matter what your end goal or dream job you think is.

For one, you need to make sure that the job you are after is what you really want. You’d think you’d like to be on the air, but fall in love with the production. On the other hand, it is important that you have a good understanding of the work of other departments, because you have to let up or solve a small crisis at any time. If someone from another team calls in sick or if there are technical difficulties, the radio cannot simply switch off. Better to be well trained and experienced in different departments or, as Adam puts it, “a jack of all trades”.

“Today I work directly with our sales and programming team on a daily basis,” said DiCostanzo, “including on-air talent, producers and program directors, to coordinate, edit and schedule their on-air radio commercials for each of them six local iHeart stations. “

See? Working on the radio is much more than having a nice voice or creating a killer playlist.

This is how you become successful on the radio

You’re not the only person out there who wants to work on the radio; It will likely take time for you to break through.

“Just be patient,” said DiCostanzo. “Everything may not always be glamorous, but hard work always pays off. There is no shortage of opportunities to make yourself known today. Stick to your own plan, make connections, don’t be afraid to branch out, and just have fun with it. Radio is what you make of it. It also opens the door to so many other side projects that you might never even know you were interested in. “

Adam added, “I think the two things that have helped me get where I am today are motivation and resilience. I made myself available for every street team event when I was in promotions and refused to take no for an answer (and I got a lot of them). I sent my radio demo weekly to countless program directors, looking for feedback, job opportunities or, if nothing more, just checking their radar. “

He suggested changing the radio directory to using AllAccess.com to find program directors, and then “stare at those emails.”

You need to encourage yourself, stay motivated, keep pushing, be patient and not allow yourself to be given up. It’s hard, but if you really want this career, it is necessary.

Think outside the boombox

Yes, a job in radio is in radio, but a little cross-platform promotion hasn’t hurt anyone.

“Social media is just as important as your sound on the show,” says Adam, who has nearly 150,000 Twitter followers and around 37,000 Instagram followers. “My success on Twitter, Instagram and YouTube has absolutely helped me get where I am today.”

He added, “My advice is to increase those social media numbers but don’t bite off more than you can chew. Better to be a rock star on a few platforms than just trying to be on everything to be on everything. Become a networking ninja (social media is also great for this). “

Build a personal brand to stand out from the crowd and get a few fans to follow you everywhere. Then, send your YouTube videos, podcasts, standout tweets, or Instagram posts to a program director. Be aggressive. Be pushy. Be open to mistakes and, most importantly, be ready to get up again.

The US is deciding how to reply to China’s digital yuan

0

China beats the US when it comes to online money innovation, which calls into question the status of the US dollar as a de facto currency reserve. Almost 80 countries – including China and the US – are in the process of developing a CBDC, or central bank digital currency. It is a form of money that is regulated but exists entirely online. China has already rolled out its digital yuan to more than a million Chinese, while the US is still largely focused on research.

The two groups in the United States commissioned with this research, MIT’s Digital Currency Initiative and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, are analyzing what a digital currency could look like for Americans. Privacy is a major concern, so researchers and analysts are watching China’s digital adoption of the yuan.

“I think if there is a digital dollar, privacy will be a very, very important part of it,” said Neha Narula, director of the Digital Currency Initiative at MIT Media Lab. “The United States is very different from China.”

Another concern is access. According to the Pew Research Center, 7% of Americans say they don’t use the Internet. For black Americans that is 9% and for Americans over 65, 25%. Americans with a disability are about three times more likely than people without disabilities to say they never get online. That’s part of what MIT is researching.

“Most of the work we do assumes that CBDC will coexist with physical cash and that users can continue to use physical cash if they want,” said Narula.

The idea of a CBDC in the US aims in part to ensure that the dollar remains the currency leader in the world economy.

“The United States should not rest on its current leadership role in this area. You should move forward and develop a clear strategy to stay very strong and capitalize on the strength of the dollar, ”said Darrell Duffie, professor of finance at the university’s Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Others consider the digital yuan to be insidious.

“The digital yuan is the greatest threat to the West that we have faced in the past 30 or 40 years. It enables China to invade everyone in the West and export its digital authoritarianism, ”said Kyle Bass of Hayman Capital Management.

0

The justified actor announced that he wanted to honor Naya by sharing a photo of her son that had significant significance. On Instagram, Ryan posted a collage of the late star and her son Josey, as well as a snapshot of her little one showing a thumbs up and a big smile.

As Ryan described the picture: “Thumbs up … just an Emed” [sic] Right. I remember the first time he did it to you. At jujitsu you gave him a thumbs up and he returned the gesture … it was so cute. Maybe it’s silly and makes no sense to do this on IG and get it out, but the whole thing is too. So there is this … “

Although he confessed that “July will probably always be a strange and difficult month” for her family, he reiterated that Josey will always be taken care of.

“Fly up, rest in peace, knowing that he’s fine …” Ryan shared. “He’s properly raised and has a lot of family and people around him who love him and you.”

The right way to find leaks in an air mattress

Photo: OSDG (Shutterstock)

After years of sleeping on poor quality air mattresses, you’ve finally decided to invest in a good one. Maybe it even has special features – like a built-in air pump or thicker.

You are confident in your purchase until one morning you wake up after falling asleep on the air mattress in the middle of a pool that feels like a pool that needs more air. Somehow the curse struck the air mattress again.

Sure, it could be a problem with the valve, but it could also be a hole. And while they’re incredibly annoying, these holes can be really hard to find. In an article for BobVila.com, Tony Carrick shares two methods for locating the leak. Here’s what you should know.

First check the valves on the air mattress

While your leak may be the result of a hole in it, there is also a possibility that the air valves are not properly secured (some have a double latch that you have to push in twice). While you’re around, also check the material around the air valves for cracks or tears. Carrick explains. If everything looks normal there, it’s time to find that hole.

G / O Media can receive a commission

Use dish soap to find holes in an air mattress

Put some dish soap in a spray bottle with water. “The detergent makes the solution more viscous so that it sticks to the surface of the mattress long enough for you to find the leak.” Carrick writes.

Then spray the solution on different parts of the inflated mattress, starting with the places where it is more likely to leak, such as the area around the valve, and then onto the seams. You will know when you hit a hole because the solution will begin to bubble and / or you can see where the air is escaping.

As long as you have come this far, you can continue to spray the mattress in case there are multiple holes and to clean the whole thing. If you find a hole, mark it with a piece of tape or a permanent marker so you know exactly where to mend it.

Spray the air mattress with a garden hose

This method is very similar to using dish soap, and in fact, you can always start with dish soap and then spray the mattress with a garden hose – not just to rinse it, but to identify any villain holes you’ve missed.

Make sure the mattress is inflated as fully as possible and is sitting on a flat surface such as a patio or driveway. Then start spraying the hose (with a spray attachment or blocking part of the opening of the house with your thumb so that it is a fan of water, not just a jet) on different sections of the air mattress. Again, if you see bubbles forming in a particular area, take a closer look at it because there’s a good chance you’ve found a hole.

Work flexibility “right here to remain” within the post-Covid world, says the director of three Fortune 500 firms

0

Companies are monitoring the spread of the Delta-Covid variant as they adjust return-to-office plans and give flexibility to employees, a board member of three Fortune 500 companies told CNBC on Friday.

“I believe hybrid offerings will continue to exist … Flexibility is here to stay, especially if you want to be competitive for talent,” said Shellye Archambeau, director of Verizon, Nordstrom and Roper Technologies. She is also the former CEO of MetricStream, which makes governance, risk management and compliance software.

Archambeau said companies’ concerns about the reopening are being driven by the highly transmissible Delta variant, which was first discovered in India. It is now the dominant strain of Covid in the United States, causing cases and deaths to rise again, especially in largely unvaccinated communities.

“Companies are watching the data very carefully,” said Archambeau. “What I see is that they are trying to be flexible by giving employees the option to return to work, but still watching the numbers and the evolution of the tariffs.”

Archambeau’s remarks come as big corporations try to figure out how to get back to the office safely.

Few companies require their employees to be fully vaccinated before returning to the office, Archambeau said. Instead, she said companies are strongly encouraging and trying to make it easier for employees to get vaccinated, even volunteering to return to the office, and encouraging the wearing of masks and physical distancing protocols for unvaccinated workers.

According to a survey conducted in April by Arizona State University with the support of the Rockefeller Foundation, more than 60% of companies in the US require their employees to have a vaccination certificate, while 44% require all employees to be vaccinated, and 31% encourage vaccinations .

Archambeau, a strategic advisor to the president of ASU, said peer pressure will soon play a bigger role in getting employees to get vaccinated.

Vaccinating children also allows more employees to return to the office so they can continue to attend school, participate in personal activities, and access childcare services.

“I think over time, companies are strongly encouraging their employees to get vaccinated,” said Archambeau. “The way they can work, the kind of roles they can play, is influenced over time, in my opinion, by whether or not they are vaccinated. … People will want to be vaccinated in order to actually do well in the company. “

Norwegian ladies’s handball workforce fined for lacking bikini bottoms

0

A spokeswoman for the International Handball Federation, Jessica RockstrohShe told the New York Times earlier this week that she did not know the reason for the uniform rules and added, “We are reviewing this internally.” She also said that her organization’s focus at the moment is on the Olympics, not uniforms, and that Norway is the only country that has officially complained. She added, “We know around the world that other countries like to play in bikinis, for example, especially in South America.”

The Norwegian team’s protest and fine came days before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics start. Beach handball is not one of his sports, but rather part of the Summer Youth Olympic Games, which will be held in Senegal in 2026.

However, a similar sport, beach volleyball, is offered at the Olympics. According to NBC News, beach volleyball players can choose whether they want to play in shorts and t-shirts as well as in bikinis or one-piece swimsuits.

(E! And NBC News are both part of the NBCUniversal family, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are currently airing on Peacock.)
