What’s new in Hulu in Could 2021

Streaming services are still grappling with the aftermath of the lack of major theatrical releases in 2020, which means this month’s Hulu lineup is again short of newer films that I’ve actually heard of. But a little googling has revealed a number of darker indie releases and documentaries that I’m definitely putting on my queue.

One of them, MLK / FBI (May 14), feels particularly relevant; This documentary, released last year, takes a deep look at the FBI’s campaign to suppress the influence of one of the most influential figures in the civil rights movement. Also in the non-fiction category – albeit a lot lighter – is Some Kind of Heaven (May 13), which examines an apparently utopian senior development in Florida, which conceals some unusual secrets.

And back in the calming world of fiction, I’m excited for The Legend of Baron T’oa (May 3rd), a critically acclaimed New Zealand comedy import about a man who sets out to salvage his father’s championship wrestling belt from a group of local hardships. Hit girl Chloe Grace Moretz stars in Shadow in the Cloud (May 5), an old-fashioned World War II fantasy adventure about a spy who encounters a literal power of evil while trying to get into top secret documents flee – that sounds like fun.

If you can take it Small fish (May 7th) is a new romantic drama set during a pandemic that grips a near-future world on the verge of environmental collapse (huh, can’t tell). And Holy Maud (May 13) is a critically acclaimed British psychological horror film about a woman who converts to Catholicism and who becomes obsessed with saving the soul of a woman she knows and falls into a spiritual black hole.
