The latest original series from Amazon Prime Video will delve into a different kind of American horror story. THEM, by creator Little Marvin and producer Lena Waithe (Master of None), is an anthology show that explores a new story each season. Based on the trailer, the first seems to combine elements of Lovecraft Country and the works of Jordan Peele (a fact that led to it some unflattering comparisons on Twitter) as it follows the disturbing experience of a black family who moved to an all-white suburb of LA in the 1950s.
At this point, it certainly seems unfair to start the show starring Ashley Thomas, Deborah Ayorinde, Shahadi Wright Joseph and Melody Hurdas as a rip off from Lovecraft Country or Peele’s Us. It’s not that the genre isn’t big enough to fit into more than one show or movie that turns the Black American experience into a metaphor. The early buzz is positive and the trailer above is drenched in gorgeous details from the time, suggesting it has a good chance of drawing a following, even amid the streaming tide of 2021.
Otherwise, your Prime membership will give you access to another Tom Clancy joint (after Jack Ryan led by John Krasinski) that month. Without Remorse (April 30), based on the Clancy novel of the same name, introduces ex-Navy SEAL John Kelly (winner Michael B. Jordan) as he uncovered an international conspiracy that awaits.
