In the Heights was one of the most anticipated films of 2020 and is exactly as expected in 2021. Lin Manuel Miranda has a way to grab the hearts of the masses with his mixed genre style, and this pre-Hamilton show brings hip hop rhythm and rhyme to a classic musical.
In the Heights tells the story of three days in the lives of residents of Washington Heights in New York City, a predominantly Spanish-speaking neighborhood. The story began as a Tony-winning Broadway play and was adapted for the big screen by Crazy Rich Asians director John M. Chu.
Musicals are not my favorite (perhaps an unpopular opinion these days, especially when it comes to the work of Lin Manuel Miranda), but it is a historic moment to see such a culturally solemn production in theaters. The wait ends June 18, when you can watch the show in the theater or enjoy it from home on HBO Max.
