Nokia and StarHub are jointly deploying a cloud-native 5G core network that supports large-scale device connectivity and ushers in breakthrough mobility solutions. The collaboration enables StarHub to introduce new digital services and promote the adoption of advanced IoT solutions by industry February 2, 2021 Espoo, Finland – Six months after the launch of Singapore’s first non-standalone 5G services for consumers and businesses, the long-term partners have joined forces StarHub and Nokia teamed up again to deliver a new cloud-native 5G core network to manage 5G standalone bandwidth (SA) demand, which is expected to grow rapidly and tremendously. The rollout of the 5G SA network is in full swing and includes core, wireless, software, security and professional services. A start of the 5G SA data service for StarHub customers is expected for the end of this year. With this 5G SA upgrade, StarHub can run 5G technology independently of the existing 4G network technology. With 5G SA technology, StarHub can simultaneously connect a wide variety of devices and deliver breakthrough mobility solutions that benefit from extremely fast, low-latency and secure campus network capabilities for the benefit of consumers, businesses and government agencies in Singapore. With StarHub 5G services delivered over an SA architecture using the 3.5 GHz spectrum, customers can take advantage of new digital services such as AR for entertainment, education and healthcare, and the industry will have the opportunity to do what it was promised Providing massive Internet of Things that can interconnect many devices and applications for a smarter society. In turn, companies can leverage the advanced 5G mobile broadband service to enable esports and augmented reality / virtual reality live feeds anywhere. StarHub can create multiple secure mobile campus networks for localized functions through network slicing capabilities. The operator can also use mobile edge computing services to host AI-based solutions such as facial recognition services and to provide advanced IoT solutions. StarHub played an active role as a pioneer in Singapore’s 5G space and worked with Nokia to deploy a 5G SA test network at IMDA’s Living Lab @ PIXEL 5G test facility in one-north to help industry players develop new 5G solutions and whose development should help technical skills. StarHub is also working with industry players such as the Nanyang Polytechnic and the National University of Singapore to explore innovative 5G solutions that can enhance the higher education experience, address industry needs, and test use cases. StarHub and Malaysia’s U Mobile have successfully completed a multi-party roaming video conference using 5G SA technology. More extensive attempts at 5G solutions, including sea rescue operations, are currently underway.
