In the late 2000s, video game development studio Rare attempted to redesign their beloved Nintendo 64 first-person shooter GoldenEye 007 for the Xbox 360. The new vision included the classic single-player campaign and the fan-favorite multiplayer modes, as well as updated graphics, modern controls and online play. There was even a switch that allowed players to toggle between the new graphics and the classic N64 graphics. The remake was almost complete, but was discontinued in 2008 due to complicated copyright issues.
While the canceled GoldenEye remake had been an open secret in the video game industry for years, fans finally saw evidence of the project when gameplay material surfaced online last month. And now someone leaked a build of the game online.
Using the Xbox 360 emulation software, we can confirm that the game is fully playable on the PC. The leaked version doesn’t include online matchmaking, but there are local multiplayer options.
For those who are wondering, yes, you can theoretically play the 2008 GoldenEye remake on your PC. Note that downloading or distributing the ROM file is technically illegal. So we don’t show you how to find them. Emulation is a legal gray area at bestand the GoldenEye Xbox 360 ROM is even grimmer – it’s technically the unreleased property of Rare and contains copyrighted material from numerous companies, as well as the likeness of several actors.
However, it is perfectly legal to install the necessary software necessary to hypothetically play the leaked ROM on PC. In this imaginary scenario, you’d have to download that Xenia Xbox 360 emulator. Follow the installation and installation steps in the video below:
Note that Xenia is a research tool and is not intended for playing illegally acquired software. However, you can use it to play Xbox 360 games that you personally own and transfer to your PC. You can play games with a controller or a keyboard and mouse. I recommend an Xbox controller that will be auto-detected. However, you can also use a PlayStation 4 controller during installation DS4Windows.
