LONDON – With fears of “vaccine nationalism” becoming a reality in 2021, experts have told CNBC why it is in everyone’s best interest to ensure that immunization programs are adequately served around the world.

“Low- and middle-income countries have faced the challenge of obtaining vaccines because of the phenomenon of vaccine nationalism. Most developed countries have many vaccines,” said Dr. Faisal Shuaib, CEO of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency in Nigeria, told CNBC last month.

While high-income countries bought more than 4.6 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines, low-income countries bought 670 million doses, according to the Duke Global Health Innovation Center.

And while many western economies like the UK and US are hoping to vaccinate the vast majority of their populations in the coming months, some countries may not be able to do so before 2024, according to the same institution.

“So if we are to eradicate Covid-19 as a global community, it is important that every community has access to these vaccines. The virus knows no borders,” Shuaib said.

Health concerns

The coronavirus is an infectious disease that is easy to spread. The latest variants of the virus are said to be even more contagious than the original strain.

“We are now living in a global village, before you know it, the infection is even spreading to developed countries. So from a scientific point of view it really doesn’t make sense to stick to vaccines if there is no equity and fairness in spreading them around the world,” said Shuaib.

But the problem of helping low-income countries with vaccine supplies goes beyond that. It is also relevant from an economic and geopolitical point of view.

Economic consequences

“The world economy is also interconnected, and even countries like New Zealand or South Korea that have responded fairly effectively to this virus have suffered badly from this pandemic,” said Thomas Bollyky, director of global health programs at the Council on Foreign Relations, told CNBC .

“It will continue to do so after this virus spreads across much of the world,” he said.

The International Monetary Fund initially forecast an increase in global production of 3.4% for 2020. But shortly after the pandemic broke out earlier this year, the IMF slashed its forecast to a 3% decline, predicting it would be the worst economic shock since the 1930s.

In more recent calculations, the IMF estimated that global economic activity actually fell by 3.3% in 2020, with renewed waves of infections and further mutations threatening the chances of an immediate recovery in 2021.

“The main weapon we have is vaccines,” IMF chief economist Gita Gopinath told CNBC on Wednesday.

“We are seeing virus mutations, and as long as many parts of the world are not vaccinated, you will still see a lot of those mutations and that is a big problem for the world economy,” she said.

International cooperation

At the same time, the coronavirus crisis has also called for stronger international cooperation.

Organizations such as the World Health Organization and UNICEF developed the Covax initiative in 2020 to help low-income countries gain access to vaccines. However, this has not been enough to ensure equitable access.

“If you have the money to buy, you get more vaccine; if you have factories; if you’ve paid for some research and development; if you block exports (or can ban exports – all of these factors favor countries with high.” Income really, but all of these things together led us to the situation where you still have the lion’s share of vaccines (that are) in high income countries, “said Suerie Moon, co-director of the Global Health Center at the Graduate Institute of Geneva, said CNBC.

If, in the midst of a global crisis, we are unable to share a vaccine that is in the interests of all nations because it is the fastest way to get the pandemic under control, what are the prospects for working together to prevent future ones Pandemics? .

Thomas bollyky

Director of the Global Health Program at the Council on Foreign Relations

The United States, for example, has laws to vaccinate its population first before sending vaccines overseas. The European Union has also stepped up its policy of restricting vaccine exports when pharmaceutical companies fail to meet deliveries to the bloc. The UK has not exported any Covid-19 recordings. However, all three regions contributed to Covax’s funding.

“If, in the midst of a global crisis, we are unable to share a vaccine that is in the interests of all nations because it is the fastest way to get the pandemic under control, what are the prospects for working together to prevent it the future?” Pandemics, what are the chances that we will work together on climate change, nuclear non-proliferation, anything that obliges the nations of the world to trust each other and work together to make us all safer, “Bollyky said.

“If we don’t make it through this crisis, we have little hope of doing it in many other areas where we need to see this collaboration,” he said.

Forward of the Olympics, the Japanese minister mentioned the Tokyo Covid surge may worsen

Forward of the Olympics, the Japanese minister mentioned the Tokyo Covid surge may worsen

Japan is working closely with the International Olympic Committee to prepare for the Games. Despite concerns about the flare-up of Covid-19 cases, there are no plans to postpone it, the Japanese minister in charge of vaccinations said.

“Unless you choose otherwise, all we have to do is prepare for the games and control the situation. I think that changes almost every day, so you have to be prepared. But I don’t think you think about it postpone it, “Taro Kono told CNBC’s Martin Soong on Wednesday.

The Olympic torch was removed from Osaka’s public streets on Wednesday as the prefecture declared a state of emergency after coronavirus cases hit record highs.

“Yes, the situation in Osaka is particularly worrying,” said Kono, who is also the Minister for Regulatory Reforms. A new variant of the virus, similar to the one first discovered in the UK, is “spreading quickly” in Osaka, he added.

“We saw a similar mutation in Tokyo, so we fear Tokyo could follow Osaka in a couple of weeks. So we really need to pay attention to the situation,” he said.

Osaka’s population is much smaller than Tokyo’s, but the city reported 878 new cases on April 7, compared with 555 in Tokyo on the same day.

The Summer Olympics officially begin in Tokyo on July 23, just over 100 days away. They were delayed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Nevertheless, the games will be scaled back sharply compared to previous years, as international viewers have been banned from entry due to concerns about Covid-19.

“Well, unfortunately we may not have that many people watching the game in the stadium, but most people will still see it on TV,” said Kono.

Delays in introducing vaccines in Japan

Japan is expected to start vaccinating the country’s seniors starting Monday and move into the next phase of its vaccine rollout, hampered by delays in vaccine delivery.

Kono says less than 1% of the population has been vaccinated so far – but he hopes vaccinations will be in full swing by mid-May when vaccines arrive from the European Union.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to develop a vaccine domestically and we have to rely on importing the vaccine from the EU,” said Kono. “Right now we have the Pfizer vaccine approved and it will start next Monday for the seniors.”

He said the vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca will be “very important” as it is made in Japan, which would cut some negotiations.

His interview took place hours before drug regulators in the EU and the UK announced on Wednesday that there may be a link between the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine and rare blood clotting problems. However, both regulators indicated that the vaccine’s benefits still outweigh the risks.

My job is to bring the vaccine from Europe to Japan and have as many people as possible vaccinated.

Taro Kono

Japan’s vaccination minister

“The biggest problem for me is going through the EU’s transparency mechanism,” said Kono, referring to a measure that allows the member states of the European Union to impose restrictions on vaccine exports.

“If we have (a) domestic vaccine or a domestically manufactured vaccine … more than half of my headaches would be gone,” he said.

When asked if his handling of the Japanese coronavirus outbreak could affect his chances for the next prime minister, Kono declined.

“My job is to get the vaccine from Europe to Japan and get as many people as possible vaccinated,” he said. “You don’t have to think about the Prime Ministery. You just have to do your job to protect (lives) the people.”

How the Goldbergs remembered George Segal in Pops’ final episode

The Goldbergs remember the late George Segal and his beloved character, Pops.

On Wednesday, April 7th, ABC’s longtime sitcom aired the final episode of Pops, which ended with a video homage to George. The veteran actor, who had played Beverly Goldberg’s father since the series began in September 2013, died on March 23 at the age of 87 of complications from bypass surgery.

The video tribute began with an on-screen message that read, “Dedicated to our friend George.” The footage shown below featured some of the character’s highlights from his eight-season run, including a series of moments when Pops offered his family members wise words of wisdom.

April 7th Wendi McLendon-Coveyplaying Beverly opposite Jeff GarlinMurray tweeted, “We’ll love you forever. See you in our dreams.” [heart emoji] #TheGoldbergs. “

She also tweeted, “Tonight’s episode was the last George made, but not the last of our season. We had no idea at the time of filming that it would be our last with him.”

The same day, actress Hayley Orrantia (Erica Goldberg) wrote of the late actor: “We love and miss you so much.”

How to decide on a sweat-resistant sunscreen

How to decide on a sweat-resistant sunscreen

Sunscreen is essential for summer outdoor workouts, but there are few rougher feelings in life than when your sweat turns your forehead into a slip’n’slide and a layer of goopy sunscreen slips down.

Fortunately, some sunscreens are better at the job than others. From a technical point of view, none of them are “sweat-proof” because something wears out at some point. (Likewise, the FDA doesn’t allow sunscreens to compete as “waterproof” or as “sunscreen.”) However, water-resistant, and therefore sweat-resistant, sunscreens exist, and a look at the label can help you tell the difference.

Illustration for article titled Choosing a Sweat Resistant Sunscreen

Look for “40 minutes” or “80 minutes” on the label

Sunscreens that can withstand sweating or swimming are labeled as “water-resistant”. You can find these words on the front of the packaging. Most sports sunscreens are water-resistant, but watch out for the fine print.

G / O Media can receive a commission

According to the FDA’s labeling guidelines, a sunscreen that claims to be water-resistant must also state whether it has passed a 40-minute or an 80-minute test. Look out for the words “waterproof (80 minutes)” for the sunscreens that make you sweat the best.

Sweat-resistant sunscreens also need to be reapplied

If you’ve been out for a few hours, you can’t just put on sunscreen and then forget about it. Add up the amount of time you can expect to be out and about, then compare it to what your sunscreen thinks is possible.

All sunscreens should be reapplied after two hours, even if you haven’t sweated. During this time, you likely touched your face, your sleeves rubbed your arms, and so on. There is no guarantee that you will still have enough sunscreen to protect yourself. and if at any point you wipe a towel off, be sure to reapply it afterwards.

If you sweat (or swim or otherwise be exposed to water) look for this water resistance rating. If you’re going for a 90-minute run, wearing an 80-minute sunscreen won’t quite get you there. You may stop at some point for water or snacks. So pack sunscreen and reapply when you have a minute.

Illustration for article titled Choosing a Sweat Resistant Sunscreen

Balance all factors

As with any skin product, you need to experiment to find out which one will work best for you. (At long last, The best sunscreen is the one that you will actually wear.) You should also check the rest of the statistics on the label. Look for a sun protection factor of at least 30 and the words “broad spectrum” that it blocks UVA rays in addition to UVB.

Although I would prefer 80 minute sunscreen, I wear Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face Mist when I run. It’s SPF 55, a wide range, and most importantly, unlike others I’ve tried, it doesn’t feel sticky or slimy. It’s water-resistant for 40 minutes so I reapply or choose a different sunscreen when I know I’ll be exercising longer. (In these cases, I use 80 minute sunscreen on my arms, but I still prefer my favorite one on my face.) And when you’ve found your own favorite sweat-resistant sunscreen, let us know.

Take a look at your retro gaming expertise in a battle royale with ‘Pac-Man 99’

A brand new Pac-Man game, Pac-Man 99, is released exclusively on Nintendo Switch today. You can play it for free if you are a Nintendo Switch online subscriber.

Like the Tetris 99 of the same name and the now defunct Mario 35, Pac-Man 99 gives the original Pac-Man arcade game a large-scale competitive advantage. The core gameplay of Pac-Man is here: You move Pac-Man in a maze-like level, eat points and fruits and avoid ghosts. Chewing a power pellet will put Pac-Man on the offensive for a few seconds, allowing you to bite these ghostly chasers and temporarily remove them from the level.

But Pac-Man 99 faces a new threat: 98 other players.

Each person in a match plays their own level of Pac-Man, and if caught by a ghost, they lose the match. Players can influence their opponents’ gameplay by eating ghosts to send a “Jammer Pac-Man” to another player’s board. Touching a Pac-Man jammer will slow Pac-Man’s movement and make it easier for the ghosts to catch you.

Pac-Man 99 also introduces new power-up items that open up additional play styles, such as collecting “Ghost Train” combinations that increase a player’s personal score, throwing additional Jammer Pac-Men at opponents, or increasing the speed of the Game increase challenge and higher rewards.

Each Pac-Man 99 match lasts until there is one player left – but you will receive rewards even if you don’t win the round. The points you earn while playing are used to unlock in-game items such as avatar symbols.

Pac-Man 99 has other game modes if you don’t want to play battle royale matches, including CPU battle and single player. However, these additional modes are not included in the base and must be purchased separately. You can also purchase unique themes that change the look of the game. There are over 20 available at launch, and each one is based on other Namco arcade games like Dig Dug, Galaga, Tower of Druaga, and Xevious.

G / O Media can receive a commission

Some call Pac-Man 99 the “replacement” for Mario 35 since it only arrives for a week after Nintendo shut down the Mario 35 servers and both games share similar ideas about gameplay. However, it appears Pac-Man 99 is going to stay here and not a limited-time event like Mario 35. Given that Pac-Man is now the third retro title to receive battle royale treatment for the Switch, ask whether we will see more games in the “99” series. I could go for a Donkey Kong 99 or a Legend of Zelda 99.

Pac-Man 99 will unlock on April 7th at 6:00 p.m. Pacific time / 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. It is available as a free download on the Nintendo Switch eShop for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, and you can download it early so you can start playing as soon as it becomes available.

The Nintendo Switch Online service costs $ 4 for one month, $ 8 for three months, or $ 20 per year. You can also sign up for a package that supports up to seven accounts for a one-time fee of $ 35 per year.

Golfers accelerated as much as 100 km / h earlier than the crash, cops say

Golfers accelerated as much as 100 km / h earlier than the crash, cops say

Tiger Woods accelerated up to 87 mph – more than 45 mph above the legal limit – before its SUV crashed in southern California in late February, seriously injuring the golf legend’s leg, investigators said Wednesday.

Woods’ vehicle, a 2021 Genesis GV80 SUV, was traveling an estimated 120 mph when it hit a tree and rolled over in the luxury vehicle, citing a data recorder, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The recorder showed that the vehicle was going between 68 and 86.99 mph in some places before Woods was unable to negotiate a curve on the road just outside Los Angeles.

It was at least Wood’s third mysterious car accident.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva, who adamantly denied that Woods had received favorable treatment during the investigation, said the most recent accident on Feb.23 was the result of 45-year-old Woods driving unsafe given the road conditions.

At a news conference, Villanueva also said there was no evidence that Woods was impaired or drunk at Rolling Hills Estates at the time of the Feb.23 crash.

Investigators didn’t check that Woods was texting before the crash, saying it wasn’t necessary.

They also said they will not issue a quote for Woods, who is recovering at his Florida home. Issuing a reckless driving ticket would require evidence, according to investigators, that Woods committed multiple violations prior to the accident, such as: B. unsafe lane changes or unsafe overtaking maneuvers on other cars.

Woods has no memory of the collision, investigators said at the press conference.

Villanueva said he could only reveal the cause of the crash because Woods agreed to it. According to the sheriff, by law, such accident reports are confidential unless the individuals involved in the incident consent to their disclosure.

“The main cause of this traffic accident was driving at a speed unsafe for the road conditions and the inability to negotiate the curve of the estimated speed of the road in the first impact area was 84 to 87 mph,” said Villanueva.

According to investigators, Woods didn’t brake before crashing the car. They said the data recorder revealed that he may have accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brakes prior to the collision.

“I know there are some who say he somehow received special or preferential treatment that is absolutely wrong,” said Villanueva.

“There was no sign of impairment. Our main concern when we were obviously at the scene of the collision was his, his safety.”

Villanueva said there was no likely cause such as open alcohol containers or signs of narcotics in the car that would have allowed investigators to obtain a search warrant to test Woods’ blood for intoxicants.

In a statement released later on Wednesday, Woods did not apologize for driving nearly double the legal speed limit.

Instead, Woods said he was “so grateful to the two good Samaritans who came to help me and called 911” after his SUV was ready.

“I am also grateful to the LASD MPs and the LA Firefighter / Paramedics, especially the LA Sheriff’s Deputy Carlos Gonzalez, and the LAFD Engine Co. # 106, the Fire Paramedics Smith and Gimenez, for being so competent on the spot helped and got me safely to the hospital. “”

“I will continue to focus on my recovery and my family and thank everyone for the overwhelming support and encouragement I have received during this very difficult time,” said Woods.

The golfer, who was alone in the SUV, was trapped in the wreckage that occurred after hitting a mean mean on the road and then raced into the brush and hit just before 7:12 a.m. PT on Feb.23 a tree.

After being freed from the vehicle, Woods was taken to a hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, which a doctor at the time described as “major orthopedic injuries” to his right lower leg.

A rod was introduced to stabilize his tibia and femoral bones, while a “combination of screws and pins” was used to stabilize injuries to the bones of his foot and ankle, according to Woods’ Twitter account.

Woods had stayed at a resort in Rolling Hills after hosting the Genesis Invitational tournament. He stayed in the area filming under a contract with Golf Digest and the Discovery Channel.

Just two days before the crash, Woods was asked during a CBS Sports interview if he would participate in the Masters tournament that begins this Thursday at Augusta National Golf Course in Georgia.

“God I hope so,” he said.

Woods’ epic career of 82 PGA titles and wins at 15 major championships was turned upside down in November 2009 after he crashed another SUV into a fire hydrant outside his then Florida residence.

Woods was knocked unconscious for more than five minutes from this crash. His then-wife Elin Nordegren is said to have used a golf club to break a window and pull it out of the car.

The crash led to weeks of reports that Woods was involved in several extramarital affairs. Shortly afterwards, he entered a clinic for treatment.

In May 2017, Woods was charged with driving under the Florida influence after police discovered him sleeping in a damaged car.

In an apology later, Woods blamed “an unexpected reaction” to a mixture of prescribed drugs for his faint.

“I want the public to know it’s not alcohol,” Woods said at the time.

A month after this arrest, Woods entered a clinic for treatment of problems with prescription pain medication and a sleep disorder.

Woods reportedly used pain medication to get up and move around while recovering from four back surgeries.

In January, Woods announced that he had his fifth microdiscectomy on his back to remove a pressurized disc fragment that caused him pain during December’s PNC championship in Orlando, Florida.

This tournament was the last time he competed.

An exercise habit has one way of building momentum: when you’re doing something, it’s easy to add something else. But if you are a complete beginner, sometimes the things other people do may not even seem possible for you. But that’s not true: everyone has to start somewhere.

Believe it or not, experienced athletes have a problem similar to beginners: everyone wants to be further than they are now. Even people who run ridiculously fast are often baffled that they can’t run any faster. When you start out all you have to do is train as much as you can – maybe you can’t run at all, but you can run – and build from there. Here are some suggestions to get you started.

When you can’t squat

Many “simple” body weight programs ask you to squat without adding weight. But if that’s more than you can do, try one of these:

  • Sit in a chair and get up again.
  • Lean your back against a wall and slide down until you are in a sitting position (this is called a wall squat).
  • Hold on to a countertop or the back of a chair while you crouch.

For all of these, it’s okay to crouch as low as possible. even if that is not quite parallel. You can work on getting lower over time.

When you can’t do pushups

Pushups are another step you’ll find in simple beginner workouts, but not everyone can do a push-up on day one.

Pushups get easier the higher your hands are and harder the higher your feet are. For the easiest beginner version, place your hands against a wall at shoulder height. Lean against the wall and push back into a standing position.

Once these get easy, choose a lower surface like a table or countertop. Then go to a chair and so on. This advance is well better than doing pushups on your kneesBecause no matter what level you are at, practice keeping your entire body straight in a plank position.

When you’re not ready to take on weights

Dumbbells come in all sizes – and luckily for beginners, the smallest are also the cheapest. If your gym doesn’t have dumbbells that are small enough, any sporting goods store likely has a pound or two of dumbbells that you can pick up and put in your gym bag.

But if you’re not even ready for dumbbells, that’s fine. A half-liter water bottle weighs about a pound. The same goes for a can of soup. Larger water bottles, wine bottles, and milk jugs can add some weight to your weight. We have done the calculations for you here. You can also hold books, roller skates, or tote bags with literally anything. (Two bottles of water in a grocery bag? That weighs two pounds.)

Do you need to start easier? It’s okay to do weight training with literally nothing. Make your hands into fists and go through the motions. If you follow a video that does a million repetitions of bicep curls or tricep extensions, your arms will get tired, even when they’re empty. Just head over to the water bottles as soon as you are ready.

When you are not ready to follow a video

With these replacements, you can feel ready to follow along with beginner training videos. But what if you can’t handle exactly what is on the screen?

Remember, your goal should be to get a workout at your current fitness level, rather than a certain number of reps that you could theoretically do if you were in better shape. If the video calls for 30 seconds of pushups and you just can’t do that many, do as many as you can and rest for the rest of the time.

It’s okay to jump from video to video until you find something at your level, but watch out for one that is fun but just out of your reach. Do it anyway, change it up or rest as needed, bookmark it and come back to it next week. Chances are, you can keep up a little better – and if you get back to the same workout week after week, you’ll eventually master it. Consistency brings momentum.

When you are not ready to do some bike training

For example, let’s say you want to train from a peloton-like bike instructor. You have your bike, you can pedal, but pretty quickly you are out of breath and have the feeling that you can’t go any further.

These workouts are easy to customize: all you have to do is listen to the teacher’s voice and facial expression, and ignore certain numbers. It doesn’t matter if she asks you for a “20” or a “50”. If the instructor looks and speaks like she is on an easy bike ride, set your resistance so that you are on an easy bike ride. If she looks like she’s going to work hard but not die, adjust your resistance so that you work hard but not die.

When you’re not ready to run

Go. That’s it, that’s the strategy. Go across the room, go down the block, go a mile. Go slow Eventually you will find yourself going further or faster. You may reach a point where you want to get started. Maybe you just enjoy your walks.

When you can’t decide where to start

Literally start anywhere. There is no wrong answer. You may start running, but it turns out that you hate to run. Well, you are already moving your body a few times a week so you can swap walking for something else.

Or maybe you start doing pushups every day, but after a while your wrists start to hurt. You can To resolve this issue and continue your pushups, selectOr, you can look back on how far you’ve come, congratulate yourself, and choose another thing to try for the next chapter of your fitness journey. After all, you’ve already started. So why not go ahead?
