Tech coughs up cash for information as regulatory threats emerge

Tech giants, terrified by regulatory threats around the world, are finally starting to pay news companies for their content, giving a glimmer of hope to the struggling news industry at a critical time during the pandemic.

Why it matters: Without government intervention, experts predict that many high-quality news outlets will eventually collapse, creating a more serious global misinformation problem.

Driving messages: Australian regulators have put in place a new code of bargaining that would make it the first country to force both Google and Facebook to pay news publishers or impose heavy fines for their content.

Don’t belief telephone calls from ‘Venmo’ or some other service

A sucker is born every minute, but this time you aren’t because you won’t let a scammer try to steal access to your Venmo account. You’re better than that and convincing what the aforementioned phishing attempts could be.

How This Phishing Scam Works The attacker somehow gets your email address and phone number, probably from one of the trillion Data breaches that happens regularly. They then initiate a password reset request with Venmo and call later trying to convince you that you have been hacked and that you should change your password to a password they suggest.

Here is the full story, courtesy of the author Reddit User:

It started around noon. I received an email stating that someone tried to reset my password. I ignored it.

Hours later I got a call from someone pretending to be from Venmo. sounding very professional. They said they had a breach of my account and asked me if I would approve a payment for a few hundred dollars and that I should have gotten an email about someone trying to get in and that they were successful. Of course I said no and was a little alarmed for a second, but decided to play along.

They tried to forge Venmo’s number, I think. All but the last digit of the number was the same, I know because I googled it on the phone.

What really got me off was that they said I had to reset my password to a password they gave me in order to undo this “fraudulent charge”. At this point I decided to play dumb and mess around with them a bit, kept them on the phone for a good 5-10 minutes pretending not to know the app’s layout and trying to do what they said. I eventually got bored and told them I knew it was a scam. The man got angry and hung up.

It was obviously a scam in the end, but I’ve never seen one they work out. They prepared to reset my password so I could get an email so I was on the alert and call later like a breach had indeed occurred.

There are a number of red flags in this scenario that should make the scam obvious to savvy readers, although not everyone is that level-headed in the face of an obvious phishing attempt, and I can absolutely see people get excited about it when they see it are not i don’t think about it.

Be careful if you receive a password reset request

For starters, every time you get a password reset request out of the blue, be on high alert. At the very least, you should be careful about communications or messages related to this service for the next few days – whether it is the “company” you are contacting for clarification, e-mails asking you for one Link to click to change your password, or anything in between.

When in doubt, know that you are in control of your interactions with a site or service. Instead of clicking on a link in an email purporting to be from a specific company, go to the app or service on your phone or web browser as you normally would, log in and reset your password the old-fashioned way if you want this as if this is something you have to do. Also, if a service offers this, check to see if other devices have recently signed into your account and set up two-factor authentication when you’re there.

Basically, do not respond to a prompt as that prompt may be a scam. You can edit your security settings at any time via the settings of an app or a service. They don’t need anyone or anything to send you there. Just download the app or website yourself.

Be careful with a “company” calling

I’ve been into technology for nearly 15 years and I can’t tell you the last time a company called me to discuss the details of my account. Google won’t post me when someone tries to reset the password on my Gmail account. Facebook has better things to do than ask me if I enabled 2FA. I’m verified on Twitter but they never felt like talking about the security of my account.

I’m sure there are exceptions, but in general companies won’t call you to talk about your account. They’re just a minor flaw in their systems – an account of potentially millions (or Billions) that they just won’t notice – and most likely won’t contact you in person to discuss. An automated email, sure, but a phone call? Unlikely.

When someone claims to be from a company and contacts you for information about your account, such as: You do not have to answer questions, for example about your passwords, payments or other sensitive issues. You can contact the Site or Services yourself to confirm that that person’s communication (and request) is valid. In other words, if “Amazon” calls you and asks you to change your password over the phone, hang up and contact Amazon Customer Service to see if it was a valid request. (Or really, in that case: hang up and just change your password yourself. You don’t need anyone’s help.)

Don’t accept someone else’s password

And this is a big problem, if a company contacts you about an aspect of your account and wants you to do something about it, think twice before making that change. Some online retailers really want you to change your password to something they provide? Would they really ask you to turn off two-factor authentication or make some other change to your account that sure makes it easier, not harder, if someone is taking advantage of you? If so, the obvious spoiler is that someone is trying to take advantage of you.

As I said, this probably all sounds like boring, obvious advice for the savvy tech user, but I think of my parents as I write this (and my less tech-savvy friends) who could easily be alerted to doing something what they shouldn’t do because of an allegedly unsafe setup. I understand – it can be scary if you believe someone has broken into a master account that you are using, especially if it is a financial service. (Take my gmail, not my money.)

When in doubt, remember that you don’t have to do anything someone or something suggests. Take advice on the situation, check that it is authentic, and take the usual steps you would otherwise take to secure your account yourself – if necessary at all.

Trials mixing Covid vaccines within the UK

LONDON – A study is being launched in the UK to see if using different Covid-19 vaccines for first and second dose will help make nationwide immunization programs more flexible.

The study, led by Oxford University and conducted by the National Immunization Schedule Evaluation Consortium, will assess the feasibility of using a vaccine for the initial “prime” vaccination other than the subsequent “booster” vaccination.

It is hoped that the study will help policymakers understand whether mixing different Covid vaccines could be a viable way to increase the flexibility of vaccination programs, and whether it could even offer better protection.

“If we show that these vaccines can be used interchangeably on the same schedule, it will greatly increase the flexibility of vaccine delivery and could provide guidance on how protection against new strains of the virus can be enhanced,” said Matthew Snape, chief investigator of the process and associate Professor of Pediatrics and Vaccine at Oxford University said Thursday.

Officially known as the “COVID-19 Heterologous Prime Boost” study but dubbed the “Com-Cov” study, the study will recruit over 800 volunteers aged 50 and over in England to study the four different combinations of Prime and to evaluate booster vaccination.

A first dose of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine will be tested, followed by a booster with either the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine or another dose of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine. Research will also look at a first dose of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine, followed by a booster with either the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine or another dose of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine. The British government has called the process a “world first”.

These are evaluated in two different dosing schedules: at an interval of four weeks to allow early intermediate reading of the data, and at an interval of 12 weeks. This latter dose interval is the current UK vaccination policy: delaying the second dose means that more people can get their first vaccines sooner with a shortage of vaccinations.

Although the policy has been viewed as controversial, some experts fear that it could make vaccines used in the UK less effective. So far only the candidates from the University of Oxford-AstraZeneca and Pfizer-BioNTech are used. The Moderna shot is due to be added to the vaccine basket later this spring.

However, Oxford University published a study on Wednesday that showed that a 12 week delay between the first and second dose of the AstraZeneca sting increased the vaccine’s effectiveness.

The researchers found that the shot was 76% effective at preventing symptomatic infection for three months after a single dose, and that the effectiveness rate increased to 82.4% if there was an interval of at least 12 weeks before the second dose. When the second dose was given less than six weeks after the first, the rate of effectiveness was 54.9%.

How the Com-Cov study will work

In the latest “Com-Cov” study, researchers will collect blood samples from volunteers from the study and monitor the effects of various dosage regimens on participants’ immune responses, as well as looking for additional side effects for the new vaccine combinations.

The study will last 13 months and was funded by the Vaccines Taskforce, established last April by the UK to coordinate efforts to research and manufacture a coronavirus vaccine, with £ 7 million of government funding (9, USD 5 million).

Professor Snape said the study was “tremendously exciting” before adding that “it will provide information that is critical to the launch of vaccines in the UK and globally”.

The richer countries are making every effort to vaccinate as many people as possible to limit the spread of infections and prevent hospitals from being overrun, which harms the economy.

Britain was hit hard by the pandemic, with cases spiking over the winter, aided by a more virulent variant of the virus that has emerged in south-east England and has now become a dominant strain in the country.

The UK currently has the fourth highest number of cases in the world with over 3.8 million confirmed infections. This comes from a record by Johns Hopkins University and recorded 109,547 deaths.

The UK government was quick to pre-order coronavirus vaccines from various manufacturers early last year and approve the vaccines currently in use. The vaccination program has been widely praised for its agility and range. The aim is to vaccinate 15 million people across the four top priority groups, including health and care workers, the elderly and the over 70s, and those who are considered to be extremely clinically at risk by mid-February.

The latest government data from Wednesday shows that just over 10 million people have received their first dose of vaccine and nearly 500,000 have received a second dose. The UK-made Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine makes up the bulk of the UK vaccination program.

Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, deputy chief medical officer and senior responsible officer for the study, said the research may even show that alternating vaccines could increase the amount of antibodies needed to fight a possible Covid-19 infection.

“It’s even possible that the combination of vaccines may improve the immune response, resulting in even higher antibody levels that last longer. If this isn’t evaluated in a clinical trial, we just don’t know. This study will give us a better one Provide insight into how We can use vaccines to keep abreast of this dire disease, “he said.

The British vaccination minister Nadhim Zahawi told the BBC on Thursday that the country’s vaccination program will continue as usual for the time being: “At the moment we are not going to change anything,” Zahawi told the “Today” program.

  2. Tap the Photo, IGTV Video, Roles, or Stories tab to see all recently deleted content of that type.
  3. Select a post.
  4. Tap the “…” Symbol.
  5. Choose “Restore” to undo the removal and send it back to your profile or archive, or “Clear” to permanently delete it (note: Instagram Support says Scrubbing for content from the database can take up to 90 days.)

“No red flags” have been seen in the more than 10,000 pregnant women who have received Covid-19 vaccinations so far, said White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, on Wednesday.

Pregnant women and young children were excluded from the original US clinical trials of the vaccines, as is typical in experimental vaccine research. This has raised some concerns that there isn’t enough data to ensure that the vaccines are safe in pregnant women, but Fauci said the Food and Drug Administration hadn’t seen any cause for concern.

“The FDA, as part of the typical follow-up you have after the initial issue of any [emergency use authorization] have found so far and we have to be careful, but so far no red flags about it, about pregnant women, “said Fauci on Wednesday in an interview with Dr. Howard Bauchner of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Since the approval of the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines in December, over 10,000 pregnant women, many of whom were healthcare workers, have had the chance, Fauci said. Fauci said “de-escalation studies” for younger children are underway. Such studies will examine the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines in increasingly younger children. Data from these studies should be available “in the next few months,” said Fauci.

“We don’t need to do efficacy studies with 30,000 to 44,000 people in every age group,” he noted.

The city’s sewage capital management plan, which serves as a map of the sewer system and its condition, was unveiled at a livestream meeting of the Board of Commissioners by representatives from WithersRavenel, a Cary-based civil and environmental engineering company.

“The AMP is a snapshot, but it’s a living document,” said JD Freeman, project manager.
