Full these gardening jobs in August to organize for fall

As August comes, it seems like you will be able to switch to the autopilot for gardening and do all the necessary watering, weeding and picking without much thought. But really, there is a lot you can (and probably should) do this month to make sure your garden can weather the end of summer and be ready for the start of fall. Here are five tasks gardeners should add to their August regardless of planting zone or region, courtesy of Helen Greiner, the CEO of Tertile (a garden weeding robot)

1. Pull out the plants that are ready for the season

Each plant has its own life cycle, and if you have some in your garden that are past their flowering point – meaning they have stopped producing fruit this season or have been harmed by heat, rain, disease or living things – it’s up to that Time, pass them off. “Be a little reckless – especially if there is enough space for a second harvest,” Greiner explains in a statement emailed to Lifehacker.

2. Fill in the holes

Think back on your harvest this year. Were there any fruit or vegetables that were tastier than usual? If so, save your seeds so you can plant them next year. In fact, according to Greiner, many types of seeds last between two and five years, depending on how they are stored.

“For best results, put the seeds in jars with a desiccant and keep them in your refrigerator, ”she explains. “If you don’t have extra space in your fridge, you can also put the seeds in jars and store them in shoeboxes in the coolest and driest place in your home.”

4. Pick new flowers that will grow on fruits and vegetables

At the end of the season, Greiner recommends removing all new flowers from plants such as melons, pumpkins and tomatoes. “This allows the plant to focus on the fruits that have already set, making them bigger and better,” she says. And as a bonus, certain vegetable flowers – like those that grow on pumpkin –are edible.

5. Look out for diseases

If you live in an area that gets particularly hot and humid in August, Greiner says it is a good idea to watch out for signs of a possible illness. Because fungal diseases like powdery mildew love the humid and humid weather.

In 2006, I packed my bags and moved from Santa Cruz, California to Mazatlán, Mexico to start my own business (and eventually retire).

In the 15 years I’ve been here, I’ve moved several times for a variety of reasons – twice as many buildings sold, too much maintenance, or something better.

Earlier this year, I moved into a 1,100-square-foot, two-bedroom, 10-foot-high apartment just minutes from one of my favorite beaches. Rent is $ 420 per month, excluding utilities.

This is what the apartment hunt was like and why this is one of my favorite places I’ve lived:

Find an apartment to rent in Mazatlán, Mexico

It is difficult to find a rental apartment here. Near the coast, where everyone wants to live, there is an increasing demand for holiday accommodation with which the owner earns more money (faster) than if he would rent them out as a one-year lease.

For example, a previous landlord is now renting out my old one-room apartment for a three-day weekend for $ 200 – the same price I paid monthly.

Asking friends and locals is a great way to find something. I also checked Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist but couldn’t find anything in the area I wanted that was on my budget.

Then a good friend told me that an apartment in her house was going to become vacant, and when we peeked through the windows, I was mesmerized.

First impressions

When I walked into the apartment for the first time, it was love at first sight – despite the chaos and major renovations.

The old-style shutters and interior doors had been sent to be drawn out, repaired, and painted; the beautiful old tiled floor was filthy and covered with rubble; the kitchen was an empty shell. But I could see the bones of the place and I knew it was a gem.

It was within my budget and had everything I was looking for: perfect location, nice architectural details and two outdoor areas. I realized what a great thing this was, and although it would only take a month or more, I immediately made a deposit to secure it.

Location, location, location

Realtors like to say that a property is “steps from the beach,” but I actually am: 124 to be precise (about half a block from my front door to the sand).

With Mazatlán’s three islands just offshore, a sunset surf session is twice as wonderful.

I can also walk to a variety of cafes, shops, and restaurants. And my apartment is on the first floor so I can easily get on and off my bike or surfboard.

I love that one friend lives across the street and another one across the street. It’s so easy to have sunset happy hour or morning coffee together on my balcony, which we do pretty often!

Rent and utilities

I’m 65, retired and living on my social security. I also get some income from my book sales and a little freelance writing.

Although the monthly rent of $ 420 was twice what I’d ever paid in Mazatlán before, it was within my budget. I want to keep my basic expenses as low as possible, but still be comfortable.

My office is in progress – a real desk and chair soon! The door leads to the front balcony with sea views.

I can do that in Mazatlán. Water costs $ 4.50 a month. Due to the air conditioning, the current is highest at this time of year; Mine is around $ 25 but is usually half that. I use propane for cooking; A tank costs $ 30 and lasts about six months with me.

I paid to add some of my own accents to the apartment:

  • Painting a wall the same golden ocher color as the floor tiles: $ 15
  • Handcrafted Bookcases for the Office: $ 225.
  • I had cabinets made by a local carpenter: $ 350 (cost sharing with landlord)

From the front door you enter a large living and dining room that extends to the kitchen and my bedroom.

My living room is spacious and pretty, with great natural light and 10 foot ceilings.

The two bedrooms are separated by a spacious “Jack and Jill” bathroom. One is an office and guest room that overlooks a plant-filled balcony and its splintered view of the ocean. My bedroom has large corner windows overlooking a back yard.

The high ceilings, white walls, and tile floors can make the rooms feel a little cold, so I use lots of natural fibers, wicker, and jute to add texture and absorb sound. I also have a lot of plants that add color and thrive from the natural light.

There is a galley kitchen that leads to a former maids room and toilet. The fridge is there, along with the washing machine and my surfboards.

The back yard has tons of potential! I can see planters full of herbs, vegetables and flowers. At the moment I only use it to hang laundry. (Why use an electric dryer when the sun can do the work?)

Did someone say happy hour? My balcony is the perfect place to meet up with my friend Ray.

A special room that already feels like home

My interior design style is pretty versatile. I love certain traditional Mexican folk arts and there are many special pieces scattered around my apartment.

But I also have a contemporary-style couch, a chalk-painted farmhouse dining set, and a few signature antiques from the area. One of my favorites is my headboard, a set of three carved cedar shutters from one of the oldest hotels in town, the Belmar.

My bedroom is a cozy, peaceful oasis in the back corner of the apartment. The headboard consists of 100 year old shutters from one of the oldest hotels in Mazatlán.

I try to mix and match styles in a way that highlights the beauty of each one and somehow it seems to work. I like to get a feel for the atmosphere of the room and decorate it accordingly.

My lease is for a year and unless my life changes drastically in some way, I intend to extend it. Cant wait for my grandchildren to visit – there is enough space for everyone and they will love going to the beach!

Movie posters: They don’t do them like they used to. Sure, smaller independent films can get away with something interesting (usually with a yellow background), but posters for big blockbusters tend to be quite formulaic. The first decades of cinema, however, were a different story.

With hand-drawn illustrations and lettering, collages of black and white stills or geometric mid-century graphics, these are works of art in themselves. And while some movie posters have long had a place in dining rooms or hung on the wall of a dorm room with blue notebooks, there are so many out there for us to enjoy. Here’s what you should know about a website with a great collection of classic movie posters that are also free to download.

What you can find in the collection

That Collection of movie posters at the University of Texas in the Harry Ransom Center in Austin contains around 10,000 digitized movie posters from the silent movie era. We first found out about the online archive from a post by Kevin Kelly in the Recomendo newsletter.

Most of the collection (and some of the funniest posters to rummage through) come from the Interstate Theater Circuit– a chain that once included almost every movie theater in Texas. The posters, film stills, lobby cards, and press books cover the 1940s through 1970s with a particularly robust collection of films from the 1950s and 1960s, including musicals, epics, westerns, swords and sandals, horror and counterculture films.

There are several ways to access the posters in the collection. Whether you’re searching or surfing, you’ll want to start on this page of the collection website.

Half of Individuals are actually totally vaccinated, says the White Home

Half of Americans, including all ages, are now fully vaccinated against Covid-19, a White House official said Friday, a major milestone as the nation battles a surge in new infections fueled by the Delta variant.

More than 821,000 doses were given from the previous day, including 565,000 people receiving their first syringe, White House Covid data director Cyrus Shahpar said in a tweet before the data was posted on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website were published. The seven-day average of new vaccinations is up 11% from last week and 44% over the past two weeks, he added.

While the milestone is exciting, the country still has a long way to go before the pandemic is over, said Dr. Paul Offit, who advises the Food and Drug Administration on Covid vaccines. The highly contagious Delta variant continues to spread rapidly, especially in regions of the country with the lowest vaccination rates, he said.

“They had over 100,000 cases and over 600 deaths yesterday, which tells us we’re not there yet,” Offit said.

Florida, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi – states with some of the lowest vaccination rates – accounted for roughly half of the new Covid cases and hospital stays in the past week, said Jeffrey Zients, the White House’s Covid Response Coordinator, said told reporters Thursday. In the past seven days, 1 in 3 new Covid cases occurred in Florida and Texas.

In Florida, where Governor Ron DeSantis opposes calls for further restrictions, the infection rate is nearing the state’s pandemic peak in late January, when an average of nearly 18,000 new cases were reported each day.

Florida reports an average of about 15,800 new cases daily for the past seven days, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, 51% more than a week ago. This is the second worst outbreak in the US by average daily new cases per capita, behind Louisiana.

The death toll there is also rising, with an average of 58 daily Covid deaths, 45% more than last week but below the record seven-day average of more than 180 daily deaths in late January.

The outbreak threatens to slow the country’s progress in ending the pandemic, especially as schools reopen and employers start bringing workers back to the office this fall, health experts say.

With the virus widespread in states like Florida, the nation “is likely to see even more worrying varieties emerge this fall and winter,” said Lawrence Gostin, director of the World Health Organization’s Collaborating Center on National and Global Health Law.

“America is about to return to normal. This could be a major setback for our national Covid response, ”he said.

As cases rise, more companies are requiring their workers to get vaccinated, and federal health officials say they are urging states to incentivize their residents.

Some Americans are already seeing the effects of not vaccinating and are now getting the injections, US officials said Thursday.

In Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama, the seven-day average of first-doses reported daily has more than doubled since early July, CDC data shows, as the outbreak worsened nationwide. In Arkansas, which has the third worst outbreak in the country, based on new cases per capita every day, vaccinations nearly tripled.

Zients said Thursday that the White House’s Covid Surge Response Teams are also working with 16 states with rising cases to meet their specific needs.

Talk about a fine line.

The “Watermelon Sugar” singer’s mustache made a triumphant return and, as expected, the internet couldn’t get enough of it. After returning from a trip to Italy with Olivia WildeThe 27-year-old star was spotted by a fan in a Los Angeles coffee shop. After the encounter on July 31, the fan – like everyone in this situation – shared the overwhelmingly good news with their followers on TikTok.

It all started when @arieastman first uploaded a video of her casually sipping coffee on TikTok, with the text in the video saying, “When you find yourself sitting next to Harry Styles and not fucking your hair washed. ” To add to the shock of the moment, she wrote in the post’s caption, “I just thought I was having a lazy Saturday morning at my local cafe and Harry Styles is here.”

Saudi state oil giant Aramco reported a staggering 288% increase in net income to $ 25.5 billion for the second quarter, while maintaining its dividend of $ 18.8 billion amid large oil prices from higher prices and a rebound benefit from global demand.

Which coffee machine do you prefer? Keurig? Chemex? Drop maker? Aeropress? Nespresso? French press? Maybe you prefer a cold brewer? As many types of coffee makers are out there, there are ways to clean them too. To get the most flavor (and the least amount of old coffee residue) in every cup of joe, follow the cleaning methods outlined in the video above.

But first a note about coffee filters. We have previously covered how useful they are for cleaning your whole house. Always empty the used filter in the trash before cleaning the coffee machine, as coffee grounds can clog a sink.

Drop maker

Limescale deposits form in filter coffee machines if they are not cleaned regularly. Fortunately, white vinegar is ideal for getting rid of them.

Fill the water chamber with equal parts water and white vinegar. Brew half a pot, then stop brewing and let the maker cool for an hour. This allows the vinegar to act on any residues in the machine. After an hour, brew the rest of the pot, discard the vinegar solution, and brew another full pot with clean water.

To clean the pot yourself, you can put it in the dishwasher or a magic eraser.

Pour over

Also known under the brand name Chemex, these glass canisters are easily discolored. Simply fill up with warm water and dissolve two effervescent tablets (like Alka-Seltzer) in it. Then rinse and dry.

Cold brewers

Since you have to sit for several hours to extract the taste of the coffee, these tall jugs (whether made of plastic or glass) can easily turn brown. For a glass cold brewer, repeat the same method that you used for pouring over. For plastic, pour in ice, dish soap, and rock salt and shake it to remove stains. Alternatively, you can use soapy water and rice for the same effect.

Pod brewer

Whether you have a Keurig or a Nespresso, the process is the same. Remove the capsule and fill the water chamber with white vinegar. Keep brewing cups until the chamber is empty. Then fill the chamber with clean water and brew another cup.

French press

This couldn’t be easier. Fill half with soapy water and dip up and down. Then just rinse and dry.

Moka pot

Don’t use soap or scrub too hard. You want the oils in the coffee to flavor the inside of the pot. Let the jug cool down after each use and empty the coffee grounds. Take the pieces apart and run them under warm water, then dry with a microfiber cloth.
