If you want to enhance your WhatsApp experience with some unofficial features, you might be tempted to try a mod. These versions of the app can offer chat options and customizable user interfaces that WhatsApp cannot provide. No matter how good the offer seems, however, we strongly recommend that you not use it.

It is important to understand that WhatsApp mods are not regular apps. You won’t find them on the Play Store because they are not allowed to be. Instead, you have to Side load the software on your device before you can use it.

The Play Store makes the difference

When you download an app like WhatsApp from the Play Store, you know that the software has gone through some security screening. While the system isn’t perfect and bad apps find their way into the store, Google doesn’t just sell any app to its users.

There are also additional security measures in place when downloading an app from the Play Store. Google will perform a security scan of the app itself, as well as your device, to make sure there are no malicious apps in your library. It is also clear in advance what permissions an app will ask for from your device, so you know immediately if an app wants to make you more of an open book than you might like.

Side-loaded apps don’t need to go through any of these security steps unless they’re tied to a trusted source. While it’s a great way to run programs outside of the Google Play Store, there is an inherent risk in practice.

Speaking of reading SMS, WhatsApp mods aren’t Encrypted end-to-end. This means that your messages are not protected by the same security measures that you normally get on WhatsApp, which makes your conversations accessible to third parties. While one of FMWhatsApp’s selling points is added security and privacy, these points seem to contradict this narrative.

You can lose your account using WhatsApp mods

You’re not just risking your privacy by using one of these app mods. You are risking your entire account. Believe it or not, WhatsApp isn’t a huge fan of these mods and has banned users from using them in the past.

The short answer? WhatsApp mods are just not safe to use. While the customization these mods offer is appealing, it’s not worth risking your privacy (and your account).
