Ministers hope to throw the money away before Britain hosts the influential COP26 climate change summit in November.

Over the past four years the government has supported UK oil and gas exports worth £ 21 billion through trade promotion and export financing.

However, oil and gas remain an “important part” of the UK’s energy strategy as the country shifts to cleaner resources.

A consultation is expected to be launched in the coming weeks on how this will end, the Prime Minister’s Integrated Review revealed.

And last night, he confirmed that the government “will make combating climate change and biodiversity loss its number one international priority” this year and beyond.

Britain aims to be the “world’s leading center for green technology, finance and wind energy” and will create a huge 250,000 jobs in the future.

The Prime Minister promised to promote “an unprecedented program of new investment” with funds for research and development in green tech and also to help developing countries go green.

The review also pledged to encourage other countries around the world to agree to “more ambitious nationally set contributions and long-term decarbonization strategies” to prevent the planet from warming beyond repair.

The Prime Minister promised to use Britain’s hosting of the grand summit to “rally as many nations as possible behind the Net Zero target by 2050”.
